Latency hiding for caches

A technique for accessing a memory having a high latency portion and a low latency portion is provided. The technique includes detecting a promotion trigger to promote data from the high latency portion to the low latency portion, in response to the promotion trigger, copying cache lines associated with the promotion trigger from the high latency portion to the low latency portion, and in response to a read request, providing data from either or both of the high latency portion or the low latency portion, based on a state associated with data in the high latency portion and the low latency portion.

Data compression system using base values and methods thereof

In some embodiments, a memory controller in a processor includes a base value cache, a compressor, and a metadata cache. The compressor is coupled to the base value cache and the metadata cache. The compressor compresses a data block using at least a base value and delta values. The compressor determines whether the size of the data block exceeds a data block threshold value. Based on the determination of whether the size of the compressed data block generated by the compressor exceeds the data block threshold value, the memory controller transfers only a set of the compressed delta values to memory for storage. A decompressor located in the lower level cache of the processor decompresses the compressed data block using the base value stored in the base value cache, metadata stored in the metadata cache and the delta values stored in memory.

Memory access response merging in a memory hierarchy

A system and method for efficiently processing memory requests are described. A computing system includes multiple compute units, multiple caches of a memory hierarchy and a communication fabric. A compute unit generates a memory access request that misses in a higher level cache, which sends a miss request to a lower level shared cache. During servicing of the miss request, the lower level cache merges identification information of multiple memory access requests targeting a same cache line from multiple compute units into a merged memory access response. The lower level shared cache continues to insert information into the merged memory access response until the lower level shared cache is ready to issue the merged memory access response. An intermediate router in the communication fabric broadcasts the merged memory access response into multiple memory access responses to send to corresponding compute units.

Resource-aware compression

Systems, apparatuses, and methods for implementing a multi-tiered approach to cache compression are disclosed. A cache includes a cache controller, light compressor, and heavy compressor. The decision on which compressor to use for compressing cache lines is made based on certain resource availability such as cache capacity or memory bandwidth. This allows the cache to opportunistically use complex algorithms for compression while limiting the adverse effects of high decompression latency on system performance. To address the above issue, the proposed design takes advantage of the heavy compressors for effectively reducing memory bandwidth in high bandwidth memory (HBM) interfaces as long as they do not sacrifice system performance. Accordingly, the cache combines light and heavy compressors with a decision-making unit to achieve reduced off-chip memory traffic without sacrificing system performance.

Prioritizing local and remote memory access in a non-uniform memory access architecture

A miss in a cache by a thread in a wavefront is detected. The wavefront includes a plurality of threads that are executing a memory access request concurrently on a corresponding plurality of processor cores. A priority is assigned to the thread based on whether the memory access request is addressed to a local memory or a remote memory. The memory access request for the thread is performed based on the priority. In some cases, the cache is selectively bypassed depending on whether the memory access request is addressed to the local or remote memory. A cache block is requested in response to the miss. The cache block is biased towards a least recently used position in response to requesting the cache block from the local memory and towards a most recently used position in response to requesting the cache block from the remote memory.

Method and apparatus for mitigating row hammer attacks

An integrated circuit includes an aggressor wordline cache and logic that determines a candidate upper adjacent address and a candidate lower adjacent address of a target memory row corresponding to a read request to memory. When at least one of the candidate upper adjacent address or the candidate lower adjacent address are determined to be a victim row, the logic checks the aggressor wordline cache for a cache hit for the target memory row. When there is a cache hit in the aggressor wordline cache, the logic sends a corresponding cache line as a response to the read request, otherwise the logic causes a read of content from the memory. In certain examples, the logic includes a stored bit array and a hash function-based filter, which determines whether any of the candidate upper adjacent address and the candidate lower adjacent address are victim rows represented in the stored bit array.

Comparing LLC-Memory Traffic between CPU and GPU Architectures

The cache hierarchy in modern CPUs and GPUs is becoming increasingly complex, which makes understanding the handshake between the memory access patterns and the cache hierarchy difficult. Moreover, the details of different cache policies are not publicly available. Therefore, the research community relies on observation to understand the relationship between memory access patterns and cache hierarchy. Our previous studies delved into the different microarchitectures of Intel CPUs. In this study, GPUs from NVIDIA and AMD are considered. Even though the execution models in CPUs and GPUs are distinct, this study attempts to correlate the behavior of the cache hierarchy of CPUs and GPUs. Using the knowledge gathered from studying Intel CPUs, the similarities and dissimilarities between CPUs and GPUs are identified. Through model evaluation, this study provides a proof of concept that traffic between last-level cache and memory can be predicted for sequential streaming and strided access patterns on GPUs.

A TTL-based Approach for Content Placement in Edge Networks

Edge networks are promising to provide better services to users by provisioning computing and storage resources at the edge of networks. However, due to the uncertainty and diversity of user interests, content popularity, distributed network structure, cache sizes, it is challenging to decide where to place the content, and how long it should be cached. In this paper, we study the utility optimization of content placement at edge networks through timer-based (TTL) policies. We propose provably optimal distributed algorithms that operate at each network cache to maximize the overall network utility. Our TTL-based optimization model provides theoretical answers to how long each content must be cached, and where it should be placed in the edge network. Extensive evaluations show that our algorithm significantly outperforms path replication with conventional caching algorithms over some network topologies.

Structure-function studies of Vibrio cholerae quorum-sensing receptor CqsR signal recognition

Ethanolamine signaling through the transmembrane quorum-sensing receptor CqsR influencesVibrio choleraeniche recognition and host colonization. In this study, we present a comprehensive structure-function analysis of CqsR. Specifically, we have determined X-ray crystal structures of the CqsR periplasmic domain bound to the signaling agonist ethanolamine and its analogs, serinol and L-alaninol, as well as the ligand-free (apo) form of CqsR. The periplasmic ligand-binding domain of CqsR is a Cache domain, the most prevalent extracellular sensory module in prokaryotes. Our findings provide a rare structural comparison of ligand-bound and unbound states of a Cache domain receptor. Coupled with thermodynamic binding assays and genetic analyses, these structures elucidate the molecular basis of CqsR ligand specificity. This study not only advances the understanding of Cache domain function but also informs the identification of ligands for orphan Cache receptors and the rational design of signaling agonists and antagonists. Lastly, we discuss ligand-induced conformational changes in the CqsR Cache domains and explore the potential for the existence of additional regulatory ligands.

Range-based memory system

A mechanism is provided for efficient coherence state modification of cached data stored in a range of addresses in a coherent data processing system in which data coherency is maintained across multiple caches. A tag search structure is maintained that identifies address tags and coherence states of cached data indexed by address tags. In response to a request from a device internal to or external from the coherence network, the tag search structure is searched to identify address tags of cached data for which the coherence state is to be modified and requests are issued in the data processing system to modify a coherence state of cached lines with the identified address tags. The request from the external device may specify a range of addresses for which a coherence state change is sought. The tag search structure may be implemented as search tree, for example.

Hvac: Removing I/O Bottleneck for Large-Scale Deep Learning Applications

Scientific communities are increasingly adopting deep learning (DL) models in their applications to accelerate scientific discovery processes. However, with rapid growth in the computing capabilities of HPC supercomputers, large-scale DL applications have to spend a significant portion of training time performing I/O to a parallel storage system. Previous research works have investigated optimization techniques such as prefetching and caching. Unfortunately, there exist non-trivial challenges to adopting the existing solutions on HPC supercomputers for large-scale DL training applications, which include non-performance and/or failures at extreme scale, lack of portability and generality in design, complex deployment methodology, and being limited to a specific application or dataset. To address these challenges, we propose High-Velocity AI Cache (HVAC), a distributed read-cache layer that targets and fully exploits the node-local storage or near node-local storage technology. HVAC seamlessly accelerates read I/O by aggregating node-local or near node-local storage, avoiding metadata lookups and file locking while preserving portability in the application code. We deploy and evaluate HVAC on 1,024 nodes (with over 6000 NVIDIA V100 GPUS) of the Summit supercomputer. In particular, we evaluate the scalability, efficiency, accuracy, and load distribution of HVAC compared to GPFS and XFS-on-NVMe. With four different DL applications, we observe an average 25 % performance improvement atop GPFS and 9% drop against XFS-on-NVMe, which scale linearly and are considered the performance upper bound. We envision HVAC as an important caching library for upcoming HPC supercomputers such as Frontier.
