Postbuckling of stiffened composite plates under combined loading

An analysis methodology for the postbuckling behavior of laminated plates under combined in-plane normal and shear loading is presented. The plates are simply supported on their ends and elastically restrained against rotation along their longitudinal edges. Discrete thickness changes along the plate edges are included in the formulation to account for attached stiffener flanges and/or edge pad-ups. The resulting analytical approach is suitable for inclusion in a preliminary sizing procedure for longitudinally stiffened composite panels.

Nonlinear Analysis and Scaling Laws for Noncircular Composite Structures Subjected to Combined Loads

Results from an analytical study of the response of a built-up, multi-cell noncircular composite structure subjected to combined internal pressure and mechanical loads are presented. Nondimensional parameters and scaling laws based on a first-order shear-deformation plate theory are derived for this noncircular composite structure. The scaling laws are used to design sub-scale structural models for predicting the structural response of a full-scale structure representative of a portion of a blended-wing-body transport aircraft. Because of the complexity of the full-scale structure, some of the similitude conditions are relaxed for the sub-scale structural models. Results from a systematic parametric study are used to determine the effects of relaxing selected similitude conditions on the sensitivity of the effectiveness of using the sub-scale structural model response characteristics for predicting the full-scale structure response characteristics.

Minimum-mass design of filamentary composite panels under combined loads: Design procedure based on simplified buckling equations

An analytical procedure is presented for designing hat stiffened and corrugated panels made of composite material and subjected to longitudinal (in the direction of the stiffeners) compression and shear loadings. The procedure is based on nonlinear mathematical programming techniques and a simplified set of buckling equations. Design requirements considered are buckling, strength, and extensional and shear stiffness. The effects of specified thickness, variation of cross-section dimensions, stiffness requirements, local buckling boundary conditions, and the effect of combined compression and shear loadings are shown.

Analysis of interlaminar fracture in composites under combined loading

Delamination is a predominant failure mode in continuous fiber reinforced laminated composite structures. One type of delamination is the transverse crack tip delamination which originates at the tip of transverse matrix cracks. An analytical model based on the sublaminate approach and fracture mechanics is developed to study the growth of such delaminations. Plane strain conditions are assumed and estimates are provided for the total strain energy release rate as well as the mode 1 and mode 2 contribution. The energy release rate estimates are used in combination with a simple failure law to predict critical delamination growth strains and stresses. These predictions are compared with experimental data on T300/934 Graphite Epoxy (+ or - 25/90 nano seconds) laminates in the range n=.5 to 8. A good agreement is demonstrated for the range of n where the experimental observations indicate transverse crack tip delamination to be the predominant failure mode.

Dynamic and thermal analysis of high speed tapered roller bearings under combined loading

The development of a computer program capable of predicting the thermal and kinetic performance of high-speed tapered roller bearings operating with fluid lubrication under applied axial, radial and moment loading (five degrees of freedom) is detailed. Various methods of applying lubrication can be considered as well as changes in bearing internal geometry which occur as the bearing is brought to operating speeds, loads and temperatures.

Characterization of crack growth under combined loading

Room-temperature static and cyclic tests were made on 21 aluminum plates in the shape of a 91.4x91.4-cm Maltese cross with 45 deg flaws to develop crack growth and fracture toughness data under mixed-mode conditions. During cyclic testing, it was impossible to maintain a high proportion of shear-mode deformation on the crack tips. Cracks either branched or turned. Under static loading, cracks remained straight if shear stress intensity exceeded normal stress intensity. Mixed-mode crack growth rate data compared reasonably well with published single-mode data, and measured crack displacements agreed with the straight and branched crack analyses. Values of critical strain energy release rate at fracture for pure shear were approximately 50% higher than for pure normal opening, and there was a large reduction in normal stress intensity at fracture in the presence of high shear stress intensity. Net section stresses were well into the inelastic range when fracture occurred under high shear on the cracks.

Mechanical response of unidirectional boron/aluminum under combined loading

Three test methods were employed to characterize the response of unidirectional Boron/Aluminum metal matrix composite material under monotonic and cyclic loading conditions, namely, losipescu shear, off-axis tension and compression. The characterization of the elastic and plastic response includes the elastic material properties, yielding and subsequent hardening of the unidirectional composite under different stress ratios in the material principal coordinate system. Yield loci generated for different stress ratios are compared for the three different test methods, taking into account residual stresses and specimen geometry. Subsequently, the yield locus for in-plane shear is compared with the prediction of an analytical, micromechanical model. The influence of the scatter in the experimental data on the predicted yield surface is also analyzed. Lastly, the experimental material strengths in tension and compression are correlated with the maximum stress and the Tsai-Wu failure criterion.

Buckling of imperfect, anisotropic, ring-stiffened cylinders under combined loads

The objectives of this study is to develop an analysis to predict loads of ring-stiffened anisotropic cylinders subject to axial compression, torsion and internal pressure. This structure is modeled as a branched shell. A nonlinear axisymmetric prebuckling equilibrium state is assumed which is amenable to exact solution within each branch. Axisymmetric geometric imperfections are included. Buckling displacements are represented by a Fourier series in the circumferential coordinate and the finite element method in the axial coordinate. Application of Trefftz criterion to the second variation of the total potential energy leads to a nonlinear eigenvalue problem for the buckling load and mode. Results are presented for both unstiffened and ring-stiffened cylinders in the form of buckling interaction diagrams. Imperfections can cause an unexpected buckling mode in the ring web which would not occur for the perfect structure, and pressurization diminishes the benefit of adding rings to the unstiffened shell to increase the buckling load. The implementation of the analysis methodology into a structural sizing algorithm is discussed.

Problems involving combined loading

The first problem was to determine the capability of a ground support equipment (GSE) rack knee bracket for handling a spacelab rack. The geometric center of gravity was calculated for the upper and lower part of the rack and found to be in the center of gravity's allowable envelope. The second problem was to determine the exact margin of safety for an axial load and a shear load on a bolt. The equation for failure is axial load squared plus shear load cubed equal one. The third problem was to simplify an expression for stress on a generic non-symmetrical bolt configuration to a form familiar to 'bolt people'. The final problem was the structural analysis of the spacelab rack corner posts.

Nonlinear analysis of damaged stiffened fuselage shells subjected to combined loads

The results of an analytical study of the nonlinear response of stiffened fuselage shells with long cracks are presented. The shells are modeled with a hierarchical modeling strategy that accounts for global and local response phenomena accurately. Results are presented for internal pressure and mechanical bending loads. The effects of crack location and orientation on shell response are described. The effects of mechanical fasteners on the response of a lap joint and the effects of elastic and elastic-plastic material properties on the buckling response of tension-loaded flat panels with cracks are also addressed.
