Rapid Model Import Tool (RMIT) User Guide

The NASA Rapid Model Import Tool (RMIT) is designed to import 3D models built in commercially available Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Digital Content Creation (DCC) development software such as; Catia, Creo, 3DS Max, Maya, etc. Upon import, RMIT processes the models to reduce file size and exports the results in a format compatible with Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) development software applications. RMIT intends to make CAD models directly accessible to engineers from local AR/VR compatible laptops and desktops.

Trash-to-Gas: Trash Preparation and Feed Mechanism

One method of reducing the mass and volume of astronaut waste items during future exploration missions is a process called Trash-to-Gas (TtG), which uses thermal degradation to convert various astronaut waste items into a gas that can either be repurposed onboard or safely vented overboard. This project aims to determine which methods for pre-processing waste may enhance the gasification efficiency within a microgravity TtG reactor. Preparation methods that were investigated include mixing, pre-drying, shredding, compacting, and raw unprocessed waste. Each of these preparation methods was tested within the state-of-the-art subscale TtG system, known as the Orbital Syngas/Commodity Augmentation Reactor (OSCAR), and the resulting solid-to-gas conversion and burn durations were compared. Full-scale CAD models of these various preparation methods in conjunction with a projected full-scale TtG reactor were created using Creo Parametric. An Equivalent System Mass (ESM) analysis was then performed to trade the benefits of improved solid-to-gas performance with the costs associated with implementing the additional components that would increase system mass, power, volume, and design complexity. The results of this ESM analysis will be leveraged for future full-scale TtG system development to help reduce the overall mass, power, and volume of the system while ensuring effective reactor performance.

Designing the Imaging and Breadboard System for FBCE-TL Project

This presentation outlines the support work done on designing the imaging and breadboard system of the Transfer Line (TL) project, which is the third module for the Flow Boiling and Condensation Experiment (FBCE) operating in the Fluids Integrated Rack on-board the International Space Station (ISS). The goal of the FBCE is to serve as a facility for flow boiling and condensation investigating two-phase flow and heat transfer data in microgravity. The TL module aims use existing FBCE hardware to study cryogenic chilldown, a large component of cryogenic propellant tank transfer research. The TL test module will perform chilldown studies with normal-perfluorohexane (nPFH), a cryogenic simulant, flowing through a super-heated line, which is heated through the process of Joule-heating. SolidWorks and Creo were used to create electrically conductive pipe junctions that connect and seal several Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) coated sapphire tube sections together to allow for low leak probability fluid flow and circumferentially uniform electrical current density. It is necessary to understand and calculate the thermal expansion of the tubing sections such that the junctions would not leak at anticipated operating temperatures and pressures, would maintain electrical contact, and not crack the crystalline tubes. Optical imaging techniques were used to build an experimentally validated image remapping process for flight-like setups of cylindrical tubes. Then MATLAB was used to create an algorithm that distorts an image based on the refraction of light passing through the mediums we were imaging through to accurately visualize the cryogenic chilldown that is of scientific interest. This research will assist NASA to move forward with long-duration spaceflight missions where knowledge of efficient heat transfer processes becomes more critical.

Distributed Sensing Node Configuration

A vision and radar sensor integration strategy for surveillance of Advance Air Mobility Mission concept of airspace is contained in the CAD drawing in this publication developed as part of NASA's Transformational Tools and Technology project. High-density airspace operations with multiple aircraft type and potentially noncooperative aircraft require distributed sensor detection and tracking systems to monitor airspace for safe, autonomous flight operations for advanced air mobility, urban air mobility, and high density small uncrewed air systems (SUAS) flight concepts. Contained herein are drawings that are available in the stp and creo file formats of the distributed sensing nodes. Additional dovetail integration is included to enable rapid changing of embedded system. A day in the life node deployment is included in the 2023_last_flight_day.mp4. Please cite this publication if you use these drawings. This sensor configuration methodology is presented in detail in the publication reference below.

This report is also available in English https://www.nrel.gov/docs/fy23osti/85126.pdf.
