Design and performance of a large vocabulary discrete word recognition system. Volume 1: Technical report

The development, construction, and test of a 100-word vocabulary near real time word recognition system are reported. Included are reasonable replacement of any one or all 100 words in the vocabulary, rapid learning of a new speaker, storage and retrieval of training sets, verbal or manual single word deletion, continuous adaptation with verbal or manual error correction, on-line verification of vocabulary as spoken, system modes selectable via verification display keyboard, relationship of classified word to neighboring word, and a versatile input/output interface to accommodate a variety of applications.

Study for identification of beneficial uses of Space (BUS). Volume 2: Technical report. Book 1: Development and business analysis of space processed isoenzymes

A separation method to provide reasonable yields of high specificity isoenzymes for the purpose of large scale, early clinical diagnosis of diseases and organic damage such as, myocardial infarction, hepatoma, muscular dystrophy, and infectous disorders is presented. Preliminary development plans are summarized. An analysis of required research and development and production resources is included. The costs of such resources and the potential profitability of a commercial space processing opportunity for electrophoretic separation of high specificity isoenzymes are reviewed.

Study for identification of beneficial Uses of Space (BUS). Volume 2: Technical report. Book 3: Development and business analysis of space processed tungsten fox X-ray targets

The development plans, analysis of required R and D and production resources, the costs of such resources, and finally, the potential profitability of a commercial space processing opportunity for containerless melting and resolidification of tungsten are discussed. The aim is to obtain a form of tungsten which, when fabricated into targets for X-ray tubes, provides at least, a 50 percent increase in service life.

Systems definition study for shuttle demonstration flights of large space structures, Volume 2: Technical Report

The development of large space structure (LSS) technology is discussed, with emphasis on space fabricated structures which are automatically manufactured in space from sheet-strip materials and assembled on-orbit. It is concluded that an LSS flight demonstration using an Automated Beam Builder and the orbiter as a construction base, could be performed in the 1983-1984 time period. The estimated cost is $24 million exclusive of shuttle launch costs. During the mission, a simple space platform could be constructed in-orbit to accommodate user requirements associated with earth viewing and materials exposure experiments needs.

Gen3 Gas Phase System Development and Demonstration (Final Technical Report)

Work undertaken in this project seeks to transform the current baseline technology – which is a collection of related but separately developed components and concepts – into a unified and operating test facility and an accompanying preliminary commercial design. This project is motivated by the primary goal of developing a system to absorb concentrated solar energy and deliver it into thermal energy storage at temperatures above 700°C, thereby enabling integration with a high-efficiency supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO 2 ) power cycle to achieve or exceed a levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) target of 6 ¢ per kilowatt-hour electric (kW e -hr). The proposed baseline solution utilizes a high-temperature gas phase (GP) system interfacing with a two-tank particle thermal energy storage (TES) and intermediate heat exchangers to supply sCO 2 at 20-25 megapascals (MPa) and 700°C at the turbine inlet.
