Few‐Unit‐Cell MFI Zeolite Synthesized using a Simple Di‐quaternary Ammonium Structure‐Directing Agent

Abstract Synthesis of a pentasil‐type zeolite with ultra‐small few‐unit‐cell crystalline domains, which we call FDP (few‐unit‐cell crystalline domain pentasil), is reported. FDP is made using bis‐1,5(tributyl ammonium) pentamethylene cations as structure directing agent (SDA). This di‐quaternary ammonium SDA combines butyl ammonium, in place of the one commonly used for MFI synthesis, propyl ammonium, and a five‐carbon nitrogen‐connecting chain, in place of the six‐carbon connecting chain SDAs that are known to fit well within the MFI pores. X‐ray diffraction analysis and electron microscopy imaging of FDP indicate ca. 10 nm crystalline domains organized in hierarchical micro‐/meso‐porous aggregates exhibiting mesoscopic order with an aggregate particle size up to ca. 5 μm. Al and Sn can be incorporated into the FDP zeolite framework to produce active and selective methanol‐to‐hydrocarbon and glucose isomerization catalysts, respectively.

Giant Dipole Moments: Remarkable Effects Mono‐, Di‐, and Tri‐ Hydrated 5,6‐Diaminobenzene‐1,2,3,4‐Tetracarbonnitrile

The molecule 5,6-diaminobenzene-1,2,3,4-tetracarbonnitrile (MOI) was first synthesized by Müllen and coworkers in 2016 and boasts an ultrastrong dipole moment of $14.1\pm 0.7$ Debye in THF. Gas phase DFT computations do not fully reflect this ultrastrong dipole moment, demonstrating the role of solvent in increasing this dipole moment. Here, we investigate the effect of solvent molecule position on the dipole moment of this species, computationally examining systems with giant dipole moments. These systems are optimized in the gas phase with the B3LYP functional, employing the aug-cc-pVTZ and def2-TZVP basis sets, as well as the B3LYP-D3BJ/aug-cc-pVTZ functional in Orca. Single point DLPNO-CCSD/aug-cc-pVDZ results were obtained from Orca and Psi4, as well as DLPNO-CCSD(T)/CBS information from Psi4. Additionally, these are compared to the dipole moments of di- and tri-hydrated systems, and the SMD models for THF and water at the B3LYP/aug-cc-pVTZ level of theory. The dissociation energies, HOMO-LUMO energy gaps, and dipole moments are presented. These metrics show the nh1nh1′ THF system boasts the largest dissociation energy and dipole moment of the singly solvated systems, due to its strong hydrogen bonding. The importance of solvent placement is highlighted and may guide the synthesis of macromolecules or organic frameworks incorporating the MOI or MOI-like subunits. Remarkably, a single solvent molecule provides a good model for the difference between the gas phase and solvated species. The predicted gas phase dipole moments computed with B3LYP/aug-cc-pVTZ for the MOI, its monohydrated complex, dihydrated complex, and its trihydrated complex are 9.6, 14.2, 16.0, and 16.8 Debye, respectively.

Sequential Separation of Linear, Mono–, and Di–Branched Hexane Isomers on a Robust Coordination Polymer with Nonbonding Flexibility

Efficient separation of hexane isomers is a crucial process for upgrading gasoline. Herein, the sequential separation of linear, mono-, and di-branched hexane isomers by a robust stacked 1D coordination polymer termed as Mn-dhbq ([Mn(dhbq)(H 2 O) 2 ], H 2 dhbq = 2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone) is reported. The interchain space of the activated polymer is of optimal aperture size (5.58 Å) that could exclude 2,3-dimethylbutane, while the chain structure can discriminate n-hexane with high capacity (1.53 mmol g –1 at 393 K, 6.67 kPa) by high-density open metal sites (5.18 mmol g –1 ). With the temperature- and adsorbate-dependent swelling of interchain spaces, the affinity between 3-methylpentane and Mn-dhbq can be deliberately controlled from sorption to exclusion, and thus a complete separation of ternary mixture can be achieved. Column breakthrough experiments confirm the excellent separation performance of Mn-dhbq. Furthermore, the ultrahigh stability and easy scalability further highlight the application prospect of Mn-dhbq for separation of hexane isomers.

Enlarging the scope of resonant di-Higgs searches: hunting for Higgs-to-Higgs cascades in 4b final states at the LHC and future colliders

We extend the coverage of resonant di-Higgs searches in the $b\bar{b}b\bar{b}$ final state to the process $pp → H_1 → H_2H_2 → b\bar{b}b\bar{b}$, where both $H_{1,2}$ are spin-0 states beyond the Standard Model. Such a process constitutes a joint discovery mode for the new states $H_1$ and $H_2$. We present the first sensitivity study of this channel, using public LHC data to validate our analysis. We also provide a first estimate of the sensitivity of the search for the HL-LHC and future facilities like the HE-LHC and FCC-hh. We analyze the discovery potential of this search for several non-minimal scalar sector scenarios: an extension of the SM with two extra singlet scalar fields, the two-Higgs-doublet model and a two-Higgs doublet model plus a singlet, which captures the scalar potential features of the NMSSM. We find that this channel represents a novel, very powerful probe for extended Higgs sectors, offering complementary sensitivity to existing analyses.

High-performance n-Type Polymers Based on Multiple Electron-withdrawing Groups Decorated ( E )-1,2-Di(thiophen-2-yl)ethene Building Blocks

The performance of n-type conjugated polymers lags far behind that of p-type polymers, which significantly restricts the development of organic electronics. The (E)-1,2-di(thiophen-2-yl)ethene (TVT) unit, owing to its unique advantages, has been widely applied in the design of p-type polymer semiconductors. Previous studies have demonstrated that introducing electron-withdrawing groups can lower the frontier orbital energy levels of polymers and enhance electron injection/transporting capabilities. Based on this, we proposed incorporating multiple electronwithdrawing groups, such as amide groups, fluorine atoms, and cyano groups, into the polymer backbones of TVT-based polymer to facilitate the electron transport. Here, we successfully designed and synthesized the polymers TVTDA-4FTVT and TVTDA-2F2CNTVT. Both polymers exhibited low frontier orbital energy levels. Due to its significantly higher crystallization tendency and favorable intermolecular packing structure, the organic field-effect transistor (OFET) device based on TVTDA-4FTVT demonstrated an electron mobility one order of magnitude higher than that of TVTDA-2F2CNTVT. TVTDA-4FTVT showed the highest electron mobility of 0.87 cm 2 ·V −1 ·s −1 , while TVTDA-2F2CNTVT exhibited the highest electron mobility of 0.049 cm 2 ·V −1 ·s −1 . Owing to its deeper lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) level, the OFET devices based on TVTDA-2F2CNTVT showed good air stability after being placed in a natural environment for 15 d.

Lithium superoxide-based high rate Li-Air batteries enabled by Di-iridium sulfur bridge active sites

Li-oxygen (Li-O 2 ) batteries can potentially provide much higher energy density than Li-ion batteries; however, the practical application of these batteries is hindered due to several drawbacks such as low current rates and high overpotential for the charging process. Here, in this paper, we report a novel Li-Air battery system that operates under high current rates (up to 1mAcm -2 ) with LiO 2 as the primary discharge product instead of the commonly reported Li 2 O 2 . This LiO 2 based battery at high rates is through a combination of an as-synthesized new one-dimensional (1D) transition metal trichalcogenide mid-entropy alloy of SnIrS 3.6 as a cathode catalyst and an electrolyte blend with a SnI 2 bi-functional additive. It is revealed that SnIrS 3.6 has a microporous structure composed of six- and five-coordinated metal atoms, forming octahedral and triangular bipyramids which has not been observed in other layered chalcogeide materials. DFT calculations reveal that the SnIrS 3.6 structure can result in LiO 2 formation through di-iridium sulfur bridge active sites that results in strong binding of O 2 and LiO 2 preventing disproportionation to Li 2 O 2 and enabling high rates. This finding will open a new perspective in designing advanced LiO 2 -based Li-O 2 batteries for real practices.

Kinetics and Mechanism of Ce(IV) Phase Transfer by the Neutral Extractants Tributyl Phosphate and N,N -Di(2-ethylhexyl)isobutyramide

Tributyl phosphate and N,N-di(2-ethylhexyl)isobutyramide (DEHiBA) are uranium-selective extractants that could be used to recover low-enriched uranium from commercial used nuclear fuel. The economic viability of liquid-liquid extraction processes for chemical separations depends on both thermodynamic and kinetic considerations. Here we used microfluidic droplet extraction to measure interfacial phase transfer rate constants for the extraction and stripping of Ce(IV), a non-radioactive actinide surrogate. The Damkohler numbers for each system were calculated and the phase transfer processes were determined to be diffusion-limited under all conditions, contrary to prior studies using constant interface stirred cells and single drop methods. A well-extracted 2:1 DEHiBA/Ce(IV) complex in the organic phase was determined from batch distribution studies, suggesting a different extraction mechanism for Ce(IV) compared with poorly extracted Pu(IV). Finally, phase disengagement rates were found to be rapid in both systems, in agreement with other studies.

Monofluorination of Naphthyls Promotes the Cofacial π–π Stacking and Increases the Electron Mobility of Non-Planar Zinc(II) Complexes of Di(naphthylethynyl)azadipyrromethene

The homoleptic zinc(II) complex of [2,8-di(1-naphthylethynyl) 3,7-diphenyl 1,9-(4-hexylphenyl)azadipyrromethene (ZnL2) 2 ] is a promising non-planar non-fullerene acceptor for organic photovoltaic applications, but it has a relatively low electron mobility that may limit its performance. Here, we explored the fluorination of peripheral aryl groups to increase intermolecular cofacial π–π stacking interactions, which are desirable for electron transport. Here complexes with fluorine on the distal phenyls [Zn(1F-L2) 2 ], on the naphthyls [Zn(2F-L2) 2 ], and on both [Zn(3F-L2) 2 ] were synthesized and characterized. All three complexes had similar optical and electrochemical properties. The crystal packing structure of Zn(2F-L2) 2 and Zn(3F-L2) 2 revealed cofacial parallel-displaced π–π stacking between the fluorinated 1-naphthylethynyl groups. Such a cofacial orientation was not observed in Zn(L2) 2 crystals, suggesting that fluorination of the naphthyl groups promotes the cofacial π–π stacking orientation. The hole mobility increased from 1.0 × 10 –4 cm 2 V –1 s –1 for Zn(L2) 2 to 0.8–1.0 × 10 –3 cm 2 V –1 s –1 for the fluorinated complexes. Fluorination on the naphthyl groups increased the electron mobility from 4.2 × 10 –5 cm 2 V –1 s –1 for Zn(L2) 2 and Zn(1F-L2) 2 to 2.0 × 10 –4 cm 2 V –1 s –1 for Zn(2F-L2) 2 and Zn(3F-L2) 2 , consistent with cofacial π–π stacking being favorable for electron transport. The three complexes were tested in OPVs using regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) as the p-type material, and the best power conversion efficiencies were 5.2, 5.4, and 5.8% for Zn(2F-L2) 2 , Zn(1F-L2) 2 , and Zn(3F-L2) 2 , respectively, compared to 5.5% for Zn(L2) 2 . The fluorination combination found in Zn(3F-L2) 2 resulted in the best device performance. This study points to a viable strategy to increase the electron mobility and performance of non-planar zinc(II) complexes of azadipyrromethene.

Direct Extraction of Uranium Oxides with N,N -Di(2-ethylhexyl)isobutyramide

The direct extraction of uranium from voloxidized nuclear fuel into an organic solvent offers several potential advantages over conventional hydrometallurgical reprocessing, including reducing the reprocessing plant footprint, providing an initial degree of decontamination from fission products, and minimizing the amount of secondary waste from nitric acid. In this work, the direct extraction of uranium oxides into 1.5 M N,N-di(2-ethylhexyl)isobutyramide (DEHiBA) in n-dodecane is examined. UV–vis spectra and distribution ratios of HNO 2 in 1.5 M DEHiBA as well as the equilibrium organic phase H 2 O concentrations in HNO 3 -loaded 1.5 M DEHiBA are also reported. Hypothesized reaction stoichiometries for the direct extraction of uranium from UO 2 , α-U 3 O 8 , and ε-UO 3 are verified through analysis of organic-phase U, HNO 2 , and HNO 3 concentrations after dissolution. Water generated by the dissolution results in the formation of a separate aqueous phase, which will need to be accounted for in future flowsheet design.

Dual domain recognition determines SARS-CoV-2 PLpro selectivity for human ISG15 and K48-linked di-ubiquitin

The Papain-like protease (PLpro) is a domain of a multi-functional, non-structural protein 3 of coronaviruses. PLpro cleaves viral polyproteins and posttranslational conjugates with poly-ubiquitin and protective ISG15, composed of two ubiquitin-like (UBL) domains. Across coronaviruses, PLpro showed divergent selectivity for recognition and cleavage of posttranslational conjugates despite sequence conservation. We show that SARS-CoV-2 PLpro binds human ISG15 and K48-linked di-ubiquitin (K48-Ub 2 ) with nanomolar affinity and detect alternate weaker-binding modes. Crystal structures of untethered PLpro complexes with ISG15 and K48-Ub 2 combined with solution NMR and cross-linking mass spectrometry revealed how the two domains of ISG15 or K48-Ub 2 are differently utilized in interactions with PLpro. Analysis of protein interface energetics predicted differential binding stabilities of the two UBL/Ub domains that were validated experimentally. We emphasize how substrate recognition can be tuned to cleave specifically ISG15 or K48-Ub 2 modifications while retaining capacity to cleave mono-Ub conjugates. These results highlight alternative druggable surfaces that would inhibit PLpro function.

Cryo-EM captures the coordination of asymmetric electron transfer through a di-copper site in DPOR

Enzymes that catalyze long-range electron transfer (ET) reactions often function as higher order complexes that possess two structurally symmetrical halves. The functional advantages for such an architecture remain a mystery. Using cryoelectron microscopy we capture snapshots of the nitrogenase-like dark-operative protochlorophyllide oxidoreductase (DPOR) during substrate binding and turnover. DPOR catalyzes reduction of the C17 = C18 double bond in protochlorophyllide during the dark chlorophyll biosynthetic pathway. DPOR is composed of electron donor (L-protein) and acceptor (NB-protein) component proteins that transiently form a complex in the presence of ATP to facilitate ET. NB-protein is an α 2 β 2 heterotetramer with two structurally identical halves. However, our structures reveal that NB-protein becomes functionally asymmetric upon substrate binding. Asymmetry results in allosteric inhibition of L-protein engagement and ET in one half. Residues that form a conduit for ET are aligned in one half while misaligned in the other. An ATP hydrolysis-coupled conformational switch is triggered once ET is accomplished in one half. These structural changes are then relayed to the other half through a di-nuclear copper center at the tetrameric interface of the NB-protein and leads to activation of ET and substrate reduction. These findings provide a mechanistic blueprint for regulation of long-range electron transfer reactions.

The impact of the electric field of metal ions on the vibrations and internal hydrogen bond strength in alkali metal ion di- and triglycine complexes

Using infrared predissociation spectroscopy of cryogenic ions, we revisit the vibrational spectra of alkali metal ion (Li+, Na+, K+) di- and triglycine complexes. We assign their most stable conformation, which involves metal ion coordination to all C=O groups and an internal NH⋯NH2 hydrogen bond in the peptide backbone. An analysis of the spectral shifts of the OH and C=O stretching vibrations across the different metal ions and peptide chain lengths shows that these are largely caused by the electric field of the metal ion, which varies in strength as a function of the square of the distance. The metal ion–peptide interaction also remotely modulates the strength of internal hydrogen bonding in the peptide backbone via the weakening of the amide C=O bond, resulting in a decrease in internal hydrogen bond strength from Li+ > Na+ > K+.

A simplified di-homodyne transient grating spectroscopy system utilizing polarization

Here, a modification to the di-homodyne transient grating spectroscopy optical arrangement is presented that removes the need to individually align two spatially separated probe laser beams. This work details the novel application of a single probe beam that utilizes birefringent materials to produce two optically homodyned signals with a relative phase shift of π radians. This arrangement effectively simplifies the alignment to one probe beam and removes the relative phase shift ambiguity between each homodyned signal. Several example measurements for tungsten, titanium, molybdenum, and silicon are shown to illustrate the utility of the new optical system.

Synthesis, characterization, and computational modeling of 6,6'-(((2-hydroxyethyl)azanediyl)bis(methylene))bis(2,4-di-tert-butylphenol) modified group 4 metal alkoxides

The coordination behavior of the tridentate alkoxy ligand 6,6'-(((2-hydroxyethyl)azanediyl)bis(methylene)) bis(2,4-di-tert-butylphenol) (termed H 3 -AM-DBP 2 ) with group 4 metal alkoxides ([M(OR) 4 ]) in a 1:1 ratio was previously found to generate [(ONep)Ti(κ 4 (O,O’,O”,N)-AM-DBP2)] and [(OR)Zr(κ 4 (μ-O,O’,O”,N)-AM-DBP 2 )] 2 (M = Zr, Hf). Additional studies revealed that increasing the stoichiometric ratio to 1:2 H3-AM-DBP 2 :[M(OR) 4 ] led to the isolation of [(ONep)Ti(κ 4 (μ-O,O’,O”,N)-AM-DBP2)(μ-ONep)Ti(ONep) 3 ] (1)•tol, [(OBu t)Zr(κ 4 (μ-O,O’,O”,N)-AM-DBP2)(μ-OBu t)Zr(OBu t )3] (2) and [(OBu t)Hf(κ 4 (μ-O,O’,O”,N)-AM-DBP2)(μ-OBu t )Hf(OBu t ) 3 ] (3). The asymmetric dinuclear complexes of 1-3 resemble the chelation of a [M(OR) 4 ] moiety to a “(OR)M(κ 4 (O,O’,O”,N)-AM-DBP 2 )” fragment. The metal complexed by the AM-DBP 2 ligand has a pseudo octahedral geometry while the other metal adopts an intermediate trigonal bipyramidal (TBP-5)/square base pyramidal (SBP-5) geometry for 1 but a distorted SBP-5 for both 2 and 3. The structure and properties of 1-3 were analyzed by computational modeling and fully characterized by standard analytical methods.
