Landing Gear Door Liners for Airframe Noise Reduction

A landing gear door for retractable landing gear of aircraft includes an acoustic liner. The acoustic liner includes one or more internal cavities or chambers having one or more openings that inhibit the generation of sound at the surface and/or absorb sound generated during operation of the aircraft. The landing gear door may include a plurality of internal chambers having different geometries to thereby absorb broadband noise.

Closed and Not Closed: Mitigating a Mystery on Chandra's Door

The Chandra X-ray Observatory is part of NASA's fleet of "Great Observatories" along with the Hubble Space Telescope, the Spitzer Space Telescope, and the now deorbited Compton Gamma Ray Observatory. The observatory was designed to detect x-ray emissions from some of the hottest regions of the galaxy including exploded stars, clusters of galaxies, and matter around black holes. One of the observatory's key scientific instruments is the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS), which is one of four primary and two focal plane instruments. Due to the sensitivity of the charged coupled devices (CCD's), an aperture door was designed and built by Lockheed-Martin that protected the instrument during testing and the time leading up to launch. The design called for a system of wax actuators (manufactured by STARSYS Corp) to be used as components in a rotary actuator that would open and close the door during ground testing and on-orbit operations. Another feature of the design was an internal shear disc located in each actuator to prevent excessive internal pressure and to shield other components from damage.

Lightweight door seals cryogenic container against diaphragm type loading

Lightweight, removable, sealed joint access door for a spherical or semispherical pressure vessel containing cryogenic materials uses a joint overlock design to take the shear and moment loads. Oversize bolt holes are used so that the attaching bolts are in tension only.

Concealed hinge permits flush mounting of doors and hatches

Hinge assembly permits flush mounting of doors and hatches of considerable thickness so that the axis of instant rotation, produced by the hinge, lies outside the panel surface and beyond the perimeter adjacent to the hinge. In operation, motion of the assembly is initially parallel, changing to angular after clearing the panel perimeter.

Space Shuttle Orbiter payload bay door mechanisms

The opening, closing, and latching of the first large clamshell door to operate in space presented some unusual challenges for the mechanism designer of the Space Shuttle Program. The requirements, hardware configuration, design trade-offs, and qualification testing in process to meet the challenge and to make the system operational for the Shuttle orbiter's approaching first orbital flight are described.

Columbia: The first 5 flights entry heating data series. Volume 5: The side fuselage and payload bay door

Entry heating flight data and wind tunnel data on the side fuselage and payload bay door, Z = 400 and 440 trace aft of X/L=0.2, for the first five flights of the Space Shuttle Orbiter are presented. The heating rate data are reviewed in terms of normalized film heat transfer coefficients as a function of angle of attack, Mach number, and normal shock Reynolds number. The surface heatings rates and temperatures were obtained by the JSC NONLIN/INVERSE computer program. Time history plots of the surface heating rates and temperatures are outlined.

Payload bay doors and radiator panels familiarization handbook

The structure and mechanisms associated with the Payload Bay Doors (PLBDs) and the radiator panels are detailed. The PLBDs allow the radiator panels to be exposed to space, protect payloads from contamination, and provide an aerodynamic fairing over the payload bay. The radiator panels dissipate heat from the orbiter and regulate hydraulic fluid temperature. Contamination in the payload bay can hinder the success of missions. Therefore, the contamination control barrier which the PLBDs provide must be efficient in keeping the bay free from contaminants. The aerodynamic fairing the PLBDs provide prevents the orbiter from being torn apart by aerodynamic forces. These facts make the PLBDs and radiator panels mission critical elements of the Space Shuttle.
