Common/Dependent-Pressure-Vessel Nickel-Hydrogen Batteries

The term "common/dependent pressure vessel" (C/DPV) denotes a proposed alternative configuration for a nickelhydrogen battery. The C/DPV configuration is so named because it is a hybrid of two prior configurations called "common pressure vessel" (CPV) and "dependent pressure vessel" (DPV). The C/DPV configuration has been proposed as a basis for designing highly reliable, long-life Ni/H2-batteries and cells for anticipated special applications in which it is expected that small charge capacities will suffice and sizes and weights must be minimized.

On-Line, Real-Time Diagnostics of a Single Fluid Atomization System

A drop tube-Impulse Atomization technique was used to produce copper droplets. In this method, energy is transferred to a liquid by plunger movement resulting in spherical droplets emanating from orifices. A mathematical model of the evolution of droplet velocity and temperature at various heights for different sized droplets was developed. A two-color pyrometer, DPV-2000, and a shadowgraph were used to measure droplets radiant energy, diameter and velocity. The temperature values from the model were used to assess the two color pyrometer assumption over the temperature range of measurement. The DVP 2000 measurements were found to be dependent of droplet size wavelength and position of droplets below the atomizing nozzle. By calibrating the instrument for effective emissivity over the range of measurements, the thermal history of droplets may be recorded using a single color pyrometer approach.

Transmission-Distribution Dynamic Co-Simulation of Electric Vehicles Providing Grid Frequency Response: Preprint

This paper investigates the impacts of electric vehicles (EVs) on power system frequency regulation based on an open-source transmission-and-distribution (T&D) dynamic co-simulation framework. The development of a EV dynamic model based on appropriate WECC dynamic model is introduced first, then the T&D dynamic co-simulation platform is described. The advantage of the overall platform is that DERs such as distributed photovoltaic (DPV) and EV are modeled explicitly in both transmission and distribution simulators for frequency dynamics and voltage, respectively. In the case studies, EVs frequency responses (i.e., primary and/or secondary) are simulated after the system is exposed to N-1 contingency such as a generation trip. Various EV frequency regulation participation strategies are investigated as well to study their impacts on system frequency response. The studies shows that EVs have potential capability to provide effective frequency regulation services.
