Static and dynamic properties of the frustrated spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ depleted-kagome antiferromagnet Cu 7 (TeO 3 ) 2 (SO 4 ) 2 (OH) 6

The structural and magnetic properties of the two-dimensional spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ depleted-kagome compound Cu 7 (TeO 3 ) 2 (SO 4 ) 2 (OH) 6 are investigated using x-ray diffraction, magnetization, heat capacity, and 1 H Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) measurements. From the analysis of magnetic susceptibility, we found a large Curie-Weiss temperature [𝜃 CW = −50⁢(2)⁢K] and the coexistence of antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic interactions. The value of 𝜃 CW gives an estimate of the average nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic interaction of 𝐽/𝑘 B ≃ 66K. The NMR relaxation rates (1/𝑇 1 and 1/𝑇 2 ) exhibit a peak, providing evidence for a magnetic long-range order at 𝑇* ≃ 4K which appears to be canted antiferromagnetic type. Heat capacity also features a broad maximum at 𝑇* that moves towards higher temperatures with increasing magnetic field, reflecting defect induced Schottky anomaly. The frustration parameter 𝑓 𝑟 = |𝜃 CW |/𝑇* ≃ 12.5 renders the compound a highly frustrated low-dimensional magnet.

A program for computing shock-tube gas dynamic properties

Computer program calculates thermodynamic properties from basic spectroscopic data. Program capacity is a mixture of 100 different species composed of ten different elements. The output is a complete thermodynamic and chemical description of the gas.

Dynamic properties of the thermosphere inferred from Pioneer Venus mass spectrometer measurements

The data obtained by the Pioneer Venus spectrometer experiments indicate that the day-night temperature contrast on Venus is associated with wind velocities of about 200 m/s which transport oxygen, helium, and hydrogen toward the night side. A mass exchange with the mesosphere commensurate with an eddy diffusion coefficient of 3 x 10 to the 7th is required to buffer the horizontal advection so as to reproduce the observed day time bulge in oxygen and the small diurnal variations in helium. The observed time response and magnitude of the day-night density variations require transport processes to be effective over time periods between five and ten days, implying a superrotation rate or prevailing winds in excess of 50 m/s at the equator. Nonlinear mass transport results in wave steepening and contributes to the amplification of the density extrema in hydrogen and helium.

Static and dynamic properties of incommensurate smectic-A(IC) liquid crystals

The elasticity, topological defects, and hydrodynamics of the incommensurate smectic A(IC) phase liquid crystals are studied. The phase is characterized by two colinear mass density waves of incommensurate spatial frequency. The elastic free energy is formulated in terms of a displacement field and a phason field. It is found that the topological defects of the system are dislocations with a nonzero phason field and phason field components. A two-dimensional Burgers lattice for these dislocations is introduced. It is shown that the hydrodynamic modes of the phase include first- and second-sound modes whose direction-dependent velocities are identical to those in ordinary smectics.

Monte Carlo calculation of dynamical properties of the two-dimensional Hubbard model

A new method is introduced for analytically continuing imaginary-time data from quantum Monte Carlo calculations to the real-frequency axis. The method is based on a least-squares-fitting procedure with constraints of positivity and smoothness on the real-frequency quantities. Results are shown for the single-particle spectral-weight function and density of states for the half-filled, two-dimensional Hubbard model.
