Thermophysical and system integration considerations in aerobraking design

The aerobraking concept for decelerating spacecraft into low-energy orbits is summarized. Data and comparisons are given for aerobraking approaches to Venus, Earth, Mars, and Titan. Calculations are based on adaption of a craft similar to the Venus Orbiting Imaging Radar vehicle to an aerobraking configuration. Special attention is given to integration of the aerobraking parts into the system and protection of the craft from heat loads due to the aerobraking maneuvers.

Data tapes generated on an IBM system were read on DEC-10 system new tapes compatible with DEC-10 system were prepared for data sections of interest. Core and external current contributions were removed from selected passes over the Indian region and the residuals analyzed. Possible equatorial electrojet contributions to the MAGSAT data were studied.

Summary of evidence for an anticodonic basis for the origin of the genetic code

This article summarizes data supporting the hypothesis that the genetic code origin was based on relationships (probably affinities) between amino acids and their anticodon nucleotides. Selective activation seems to follow from selective affinity and consequently, incorporation of amino acids into peptides can also be selective. It is suggested that these selectivities in affinity and activation, coupled with the base pairing specificities, allowed the origin of the code and the process of translation.

Einstein and IUE observations of nearby red dwarfs

This paper summarizes data for 40 representative nearby stars from one guest observer's coordinated programs with the Einstein Observatory or IUE Observatory. The coronal X-ray, chromospheric ultraviolet, and auxiliary optical properties of sets of these stars are tabulated or illustrated in several ways. Factors of stellar duplicity are shown to be quite prevalent in presenting the observations. The most luminous X-ray dwarfs below the sun are strongly prone to binary status. X-ray luminosity, and the ratio of chromospheric flux to X-ray flux, are dependent on photospheric radius. A very long period BY Draconis variable of type dM6e (HH And) is a detected X-ray source, and some presumably quite old (halo) stars are detected.

Radar remote sensing for crop classification and canopy condition assessment: Ground-data documentation

A vegetation and soil-moisture experiment was conducted in order to examine the microwave emission and backscattering from vegetation canopies and soils. The data-acquisition methodology used in conjunction with the mobile radar scatterometer (MRS) systems is described and associated ground-truth data are documented. Test fields were located in the Kansas River floodplain north of Lawrence, Kansas. Ten fields each of wheat, corn, and soybeans were monitored over the greater part of their growing seasons. The tabulated data summarize measurements made by the sensor systems and represent target characteristics. Target parameters describing the vegetation and soil characteristics include plant moisture, density, height, and growth stage, as well as soil moisture and soil-bulk density. Complete listings of pertinent crop-canopy and soil measurements are given.

Effects of foveal information processing

The scanning behavior of pilots must be understood so that cockpit displays can be assembled which will provide the most information accurately and quickly to the pilot. The results of seven years of collecting and analyzing pilot scanning data are summarized. The data indicate that pilot scanning behavior is: (1) subsconscious; (2) situation dependent; and (3) can be disrupted if pilots are forced to make conscious decisions. Testing techniques and scanning analysis techniques have been developed that are sensitive to pilot workload.

Summary of radiation dosimetry results on U.S. and Soviet manned spacecraft

Measurements of the radiation environment aboard U.S. and Soviet manned spacecraft are reviewed and summarized. Data obtained mostly from passive and some active radiation detectors now exist for the case of low-earth-orbit missions. Major uncertainties still exist for space exposure in high-altitude, high-inclination geostationary orbits, in connection with solar effects and that of shielding. Data from active detectors flown in Spacelabs 1 and 2 suggest that a variety of phenomena must be understood before the effects of long-term exposure at the Space Station type of orbit and shielding can be properly assessed.

Estimating the cost of mental loading in a bimodal divided-attention task: Combining reaction time, heart-rate variability and signal-detection theory

Multiple approaches are necessary for understanding and measuring workload. In particular, physiological systems identifiable by employing cardiac measures are related to cognitive systems. One issue of debate in measuring cardiac output is the grain of analysis used in recording and summarizing data. Various experiments are reviewed, the majority of which were directed at supporting or contradicting Lacey's intake-rejection hypothesis. Two of the experiments observed heart rate in operational environments and found virtually no changes associated with mental load. The major problems facing researchers using heart rate variability, or sinus arrhthmia, as a dependent measure have been associated with valid and sensitive scoring and preventing contamination of observed results by influences unrelated to cognition. Spectral analysis of heart rate variability offers two useful procedures: analysis from the time domain and analysis from the frequency domain. Most recently, data have been collected in a divided attention experiment, the performance measures and cardiac measures of which are detailed.

Grooved surfaces on InP

Formation of a textured or grooved front surface on a solar cell can increase the efficiency in several ways, including enhanced absorption and light trapping. In III-IV materials the (111) plane is chemically different form the (1'1'1') plane, and both etching and epitaxial deposition behave differently on these surfaces. The current state of profile etching in InP is summarized. Data are presented on novel geometries attainable as a function of etchant temperature and composition, substrate orientation and carrier concentration, and the oxide thickness between the substrate and the photoresist. Depending on dopant concentration, the same etchant can produce either anisotropic or isotropic grooves. V-grooved solar cells were manufactured on InP, and the improved optical absorption was demonstrated. Preferred parameters for various applications are listed and discussed.

Approach to derivation of SIR-C science requirements for calibration

A study undertaken to determine SIR-C (Shuttle Imaging Radar-C) science requirements for polarimetric calibration is described. A model describing the effect of miscalibration is presented, followed by a description of specific experiments and the resulting requirements levied on the system. The effects of miscalibration on some commonly used measures which can be extracted from SAR (synthetic aperture radar) data are also discussed. It is concluded that polarimetric calibration requirements are strongly application-dependent, and that a compromise must be made to maximize the domain of application of the data without prohibitive cost. Data summarizing SIR-C polarimetric calibration goals are also presented.

Satellite remote sensing of surface energy and mass balance - Results from FIFE

Results obtained from the FIFE experiments conducted in 1987 and 1989 are summarized. Data analyses indicate that the hypotheses linking energy balance components to surface biology and remote sensing are reasonable at a point level, and that satellite remote sensing can potentially provide useful estimates of the surface energy budget. An investigation of atmospheric scattering and absorption effects on satellite remote sensing of surface radiance shows that the magnitude of atmospheric opacity variations within the FIFE site and with season can have a large effect on satellite measured values of surface radiances. Comparisons of atmospherically corrected TM radiances with surface measured radiances agreed to within about two percent at the visible and near-infrared wavelengths and to 6 percent in the midinfrared.
