Absolute atomic hydrogen density measurements in an atmospheric pressure plasma jet: generation, transport and recombination from the active discharge region to the effluent

Atomic hydrogen (H) generated by atmospheric pressure radio frequency (RF) plasma jet is investigated by two-photon absorption laser induced fluorescence in a He-H 2 mixture. The reported time and spatially resolved H density profiles enable a detailed analysis of the species generation, transport and decay along the axis of symmetry of the jet. Here, the H density distribution for a continuous RF plasma jet corresponds well with the outcome of a Pseudo-1D plug flow model. In addition, RF power modulation has a strong effect on the H density in the active discharge region but has a negligible effect on the H density in the far effluent.

Model Quality and Measurement Density Impact on Volt/Volt Ampere Reactive Optimization Performance

The operation of the utility grid is being reshaped by the continuous addition of distributed energy resources and advanced metering infrastructure, which challenge existing grid control strategies. Some utilities deploy advanced distribution management systems (ADMS) to assist with the consolidation of various applications and to augment situational awareness in response to the new power delivery dynamics. An ADMS is an integrated software platform that provides utilities with a way to enhance their reliability, control, and optimization with advanced applications, such as volt/VAR optimization (VVO). A VVO application could serve as a vehicle to deliver cost savings by providing the utility with a method to reduce rates by controlling the voltage and decreasing the energy usage in their service territory. Some utilities are reluctant to integrate an ADMS, because it is a significant investment that requires approval from the public regulatory commission and/or their customers. This paper evaluates the impact on VVO performance when using a lower-quality network model supplemented with additional measurements, which could provide an implementation for cost savings. The results show that a better model quality would provide the highest energy savings; however, some level of telemetry is necessary in all scenarios to prevent voltage exceedances.

Absolute Reactive Oxygen Species Densities in the Effluent of the COST Reference Source and Plasma-generated Atomic Oxygen Density Measurements in Liquid using TALIF

Reactive oxygen species are one of the most important species produced in a plasma. In particular the role of atomic oxygen and the hydroxyl radical OH has attracted many studies ranging from plasma medicine to plasma-driven biocatalysis and water treatment. Atomic oxygen and the hydroxyl radical OH are very reactive and react unselectively with many different substrates. The quantification of atomic oxygen and OH is challenging because of their reactivity and unknown reactions and rate constants.

An imaging refractometer for density fluctuation measurements in high energy density plasmas

In this work, we report on a recently developed laser-probing diagnostic which allows direct measurements of ray-deflection angles in one axis, whilst retaining imaging capabilities in the other axis. This allows us to measure the spectrum of angular deflections from a laser beam which passes though a turbulent high-energy-density plasma. This spectrum contains information about the density fluctuations within the plasma, which deflect the probing laser over a range of angles. We create synthetic diagnostics using ray-tracing to compare this new diagnostic with standard shadowgraphy and schlieren imaging approaches, which demonstrates the enhanced sensitivity of this new diagnostic over standard techniques. We present experimental data from turbulence behind a reverse shock in a plasma and demonstrate that this technique can measure angular deflections between 0.06 and 34 mrad, corresponding to a dynamic range of over 500.
