Line Profile of H Lyman (alpha) from Dissociative Excitation of H2 with Application to Jupiter

Observations of the H Lyman(alpha) (Ly-alpha) emission from Jupiter have shown pronounced emissions, exceeding solar fluorescence, in the polar aurora and equatorial "bulge" regions. The H Ly-alpha line profiles from these regions are broader than expected, indicating high-energy processes producing fast atoms as determined from the observed Doppler broadening. Toward understanding that process a high-resolution ultraviolet (UV) spectrometer was employed for the first measurement of the H Ly-alpha emission Doppler profile from dissociative excitation of H2 by electron impact. Analysis of the deconvolved line profile reveals the existence of a narrow central peak of 40 +/- 4 mA full width at half maximum and a broad pedestal base about 240 mA wide. Two distinct dissociation mechanisms account for this Doppler structure. Slow H(2p) atoms characterized by a distribution function with peak energy near 80 meV produce the peak profile, which is nearly independent of the electron impact energy. Slow H(2p) atoms arise from direct dissociation and predissociation of singly excited states which have a dissociation limit of 14.68 eV. The wings of H Ly-alpha arise from dissociative excitation of a series of doubly excited states which cross the Franck-Condon region between 23 and 40 eV. The profile of the wings is dependent on the electron impact energy, and the distribution function of fast H(2p) atoms is therefore dependent on the electron impact energy. The fast atom kinetic energy distribution at 100 eV electron impact energy spans the energy range from 1 to 10 eV with a peak near 4 eV. For impact energies above 23 eV the fast atoms contribute to a slightly asymmetric structure of the line profile. The absolute cross sections of the H Ly-alpha line peak and wings were measured over the range from 0 to 200 eV. Analytic model coefficients are given for the measured cross sections which can be applied to planetary atmosphere auroral and dayglow calculations. The dissociative excitation process, while one contributing process, appears insufficient by itself to explain the line broadening observed at Jupiter.

New laser technique for the identification of molecular transitions.

A laser technique is proposed which may be useful for the assignment of molecular spectra in the visible and infrared regions. The method is based on the resonant interaction of two monochromatic fields with a Doppler-broadened three-level system. Under the appropriate conditions the absorption line shape of one of the transitions shows a complex structure over a narrow section of the Doppler profile, and for sufficiently high laser power the line shape splits into a number of narrow peaks. Analysis of the resulting intensity pattern leads to unambiguous assignment of the angular momentum quantum numbers of the three levels involved. A simple set of rules is given to facilitate interpretation of spectra. The line shapes discussed are also relevant to monochromatic optical pumping of gases and unidirectional laser amplifiers.

Multiple relaxation and inhomogeneous broadening in resonance enhanced Raman scattering - Application to tunable infrared generation

The solutions for the imaginary susceptibility of the Raman field transition with arbitrary relaxation rates and field strengths are examined for differing sets of relaxation rates with emphasis on alkali metal vapors which have spontaneous emission dominated relaxation. The model is further expanded to include Doppler broadening and used to predict the peak gain as a function of detuning for a frequency doubled alexandrite laser-pumped cesium vapor gain cell.

Intensities and N2 collision-broadening coefficients measured for selected H2O absorption lines between 715 and 732 nm

Intensities and N2 collision-broadening coefficients are measured for 62 water vapor absorption lines between 715 and 732 nm potentially applicable to laser remote sensing of atmospheric water vapor. Absolute line strengths and widths were determined from spectra corrected for instrument resolution, air-path absorption and Lorentz and Doppler broadening for pure water vapor and water vapor-nitrogen mixtures in a multipass absorption cell with a base path length of 25 m (White cell). Line strengths are observed to range from 4 x 10 to the -25th to 4 x 10 to the -23rd kayser/molecule per sq cm, and collision broadening coefficients are found to be approximately equal to 0.1 kayser/atm.

Laser amplification of incoherent radiation

The amplification of noise in a laser amplifier is treated theoretically. The model for the active medium and its description using density-matrix techniques, are taken from the theory of laser operation. The spectral behavior of the radiation in the nonlinear regime is studied and the formalism is written from the onset in the frequency domain. The statistics of the light are gradually modified by the nonlinear amplification process, and expressions are derived for the rate of change of fluctuations in intensity as a measure of statistical changes. In addition, the range of validity of Litvak's Gaussian-statistics approximation is discussed. In the homogeneous-broadening case, the evolution of initially broadband Gaussian radiation toward quasimonochromatic oscillations with laserlike statistics is explored in several numerical examples. The connections of this study with the time-domain work on self-pulsing in a ring-laser configuration, are established. Finally, spectral-narrowing and -rebroadening effects in Doppler-broadened media are discussed both analytically and with numerical examples. These examples show the distinct contribution of pulsations in the population ('Raman-type terms'), and saturation phenomena.

Some aspects of remote atmospheric sensing by laser radar

An analysis has been made of some aspects of atmospheric sensing by laser radar spectroscopy. A discussion of the laser radar equation is presented which leads to methods for obtaining atmospheric information by spectroscopic means. Calculations are presented which investigate the potential of Doppler, Raman and differential absorption techniques. It is concluded that atmospheric measurements based upon Doppler and Raman approaches are restricted to qualitative studies at the present time primarily because of the limitations imposed by existing laser sources and detectors. It is probable that these limitations will be removed in the near future and it is recommended that exploratory experiments be continued. The differential absorption method for obtaining the spatial distribution of atmospheric gases is well developed for such gases as water vapor and oxygen where the basic laser frequency lies close to the center of the particular absorption line. Further investigation is recommended in the field of laser frequency shifting. Additional information is also required on the shape of the absorption line, particular in the region where the line reflects both pressure and Doppler broadening.

Spectrocopic measurements of water vapor plasmas at high resolution: The optical transition probabilities for OH (A 2 Sigma - X 2 Pi)

Emission and absorption spectra of water vapor plasmas generated in a wall-stabilized arc at atmospheric pressure and 4 current, and at 0.03 atm and 15 to 50 A, were measured at high spatial and spectral resolution. The gas temperature was determined from the shape of Doppler-broadened rotational lines of OH. The observed nonequilibrium population distributions over the energy levels of atoms are interpreted in terms of a theoretical state model for diffusion-controlled arc plasmas. Excellent correlation is achieved between measured and predicted occupation of hydrogen energy levels. It is shown that the population distribution over the nonpredissociating rotational-vibrational levels of the A 2 Sigma state of OH is close to an equilibrium distribution at the gas temperature, although the total density of this state is much higher than its equilibrium density. The reduced intensities of the rotational lines originating in these levels yielded Boltzmann plots that were strictly linear.

Theoretical colours for F and G dwarf stars.

Synthetic spectra have been computed for F and G dwarf stars, using a number of values of chemical abundance, Doppler broadening velocity, and damping constant. Metal abundances for a number of such stars have been obtained using computed and observed m(sub 1) and 40-52 colors. These abundances are in good agreement with spectroscopically determined ones. The c(sub 1) colors of such stars with exactly known trigonometric parallaxes have been used in order to determine how accurately absolute magnitudes can be predicted from the colors. Generally reasonable agreement can be obtained between observed and predicted absolute magnitudes for certain of these stars. The effects of interstellar reddening on the colors of the models are examined.

Hyperfine structure of excited states and quadrupole moment of Ne-21 using laser-induced line-narrowing techniques.

Observation results are presented on the optical hyperfine structure in Ne-21 obtained with the aid of laser-induced line-narrowing techniques. The output from a long stabilized single-mode 1.15-micron He-Ne laser focused into an external sample cell containing Ne-21 was used in implementing these techniques. Their applicability is demonstrated for optical hyperfine structure observation in systems whose features are ordinarily masked by Doppler broadening.

Gamma-neutrino angular correlations in muon capture.

Using a high-resolution Ge(Li) spectrometer, it proved possible to observe several Doppler-broadened gamma-ray transitions in Al-28 excited by muon capture in Si-28. Several of these transitions are shown to be suitable for analysis in terms of angular correlations between the neutrino and a deexcitation nuclear gamma-ray. The observed transitions are interpreted in terms of gamma-neutrino correlation coefficients which are functions of the weak-interaction coupling constants.

Calculation of quasi-static helium triplet diffuse line profiles

Calculated spectral line profiles (intensity distributions) of the helium triplet diffuse series were obtained using the quasi-static approximation for ions and electrons. In these calculations, Doppler broadening, although negligible in most of the cases, was included as a device to avoid singularities. Plots and tabulations of the calculated profiles are presented, in addition to a discussion of the computational procedure and the validity of the calculations.

Interactions among multiple lines in the 8446-A atomic-oxygen laser.

The atomic-oxygen laser oscillates at four closely spaced frequencies on the gain profile of the 8446-A fine-structure transitions. A set of experiments is reported which studies the competition among these four lines by suppressing one of them. The results are explained on the basis of the interaction of laser lines oscillating on Doppler-broadened transitions sharing a common lower level.

Quasi-monochromatic measurements of homogeneous arc plasmas.

The refined diagnostic information obtainable by high-order spectrometry is illustrated by the results of quantitative measurements of a few rotational lines of OH in the ultraviolet spectrum of water-vapor plasmas generated in a wall-stabilized arc. Because of the high spectral and spatial resolution achieved in end-on measurements, the emission and also the absorption coefficients pertaining to homogeneous arc regions were obtained directly from measured line spectra - although the absorption was not measured explicitly - leading to the occupation of the upper and the lower state for the transition. The gas temperature was determined from the halfwidth of the Doppler-broadened rotational lines. The measured resolving power of the spectrometer was of the order of 400,000 in these measurements.
