Electron correlation and incipient flat bands in the Kagome superconductor CsCr 3 Sb 5

Correlated kagome materials exhibit a compelling interplay between lattice geometry, electron correlation, and topology. In particular, the flat bands near the Fermi level provide a fertile playground for novel many-body states. Here we investigate the electronic structure of CsCr 3 Sb 5 using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and ab-initio calculations. Our results suggest that Cr 3d electrons are intrinsically incoherent, showing strong electron correlation amplified by Hund’s coupling. Notably, we identify incipient flat bands close to the Fermi level, which are expected to significantly influence the electronic properties of the system. Across the density-wave-like transition at 55 K, we observe a drastic enhancement of the electron scattering rate, which aligns with the semiconducting-like property at high temperatures. These findings establish CsCr 3 Sb 5 as a strongly correlated Hund’s metal with incipient flat bands near the Fermi level, which provides an electronic basis for understanding its novel properties compared to the weakly correlated AV 3 Sb 5 .

Bldg. 7930 Cell G Neutron Detector New Electronics Testing

The Cell G neutron assay system within 7930 provides an important function in the production of Californium-252 in the quantitative determination of the amount of Cf-252 present in a sample. The assay system consists of a Uranium-238 fission chamber coupled to the necessary counting electronics including preamplifier, amplifier, discriminator and counter/timer. The original electronics date back to the 1970s but were replaced back in 2011 with little documentation detailing the testing and replacement efforts. This work focused on procuring a new spare set of electronics, their subsequent testing as a backup in case any of the currently in use electronics were to fail and documentation of the existing and new setups.

The Choroidal Eye Oximeter - An instrument for measuring oxygen saturation of choroidal blood in vivo

The Choroidal Eye Oximeter is an electro-optical instrument that noninvasively measures the oxygen saturation of choroidal blood in the back of the human eye by a spectrophotometric method. Since choroidal blood is characteristic of blood which is supplied to the brain, the Choroidal Eye Oximeter can be used to monitor the amount of oxygen which is supplied to the brain under varying external conditions. The instrument consists of two basic systems: the optical system and the electronic system. The optical system produces a suitable bi-chromatic beam of light, reflects this beam from the fundus of the subject's eye, and onto a low-noise photodetector. The electronic system amplifies the weak composite signal from the photodetector, computes the average oxygen saturation from the area of the fundus that was sampled, and displays the value of the computed oxygen saturation on a panel meter.

The effect of space charge fields due to finite length electron beams in the free-electron laser

The space charge electric field of a finite length electron beam in the free electron laser amplifier with a tapered wiggler is analyzed. In the free drift region between the accelerator and laser, expressions for the increase of energy spread due to the self field are presented. In the FEL interaction region, the general conditions on the importance of the self electric field in the equations of motion is obtained. A numerical example of the FEL experiment at 10.6 microns is given.

Multiple-Dynode-Layer Microchannel Plate

Improved microchannel-plate electron image amplifier made of stack of discrete microchannel-plate layers. New plates easier to manufacture because no need to etch long, narrow holes, to draw and bundle thin glass tubes, or to shear plates to give microchannels curvatures necessary for reduction of undesired emission of ions. Discrete dynode layers stacked with slight offset from layer to layer to form microchannel plate with curved channels. Provides for relatively fast recharging of microchannel dynodes, with consequent enhancement of performance.

Low intensity X-ray and gamma-ray imaging device

A radiation to visible light converter is combined with a visible light intensifier. The converter is a phosphor or scintillator material which is modified to block ambient light. The intensifier includes fiber optics input and output face plates with a photocathode-microchannel plate amplifier-phosphor combination. Incoming radiation is converted to visible light by the converter which is piped into the intensifier by the input fiber optics face plate. The photocathode converts the visible light to electrons which are amplified by a microchannel plate amplifier. The electrons are converted back to light by a phosphor layer and piped out for viewing by the output fiber optics faces plate. The converter-intensifier combination may be further combined with its own radiation source or used with an independent source.

Calculation of secondary electron trajectories in multistage depressed collectors for microwave amplifiers

Computational procedures are reported for treating power losses due to secondary electrons in multistage depressed collectors (MDC) for traveling wave tubes (TWT) and other O-type electron tubes. The MDC is modeled with an advanced, multidimensional computer program. Representative beams of secondary electrons are then injected at the points of impact of the primary beams. Separate programs are used to calculate representative beams of high-energy primary electron beams and of low-energy true secondaries. The recomputation of the MDC model including the true secondary beam allows determination of the secondary emission losses, and, if necessary, redesign of the MDC to improve performance. Recomputation of the MDC model including the primary beams is used to check on possible backstreaming from the MDC to the RF interaction structure of the tube. A comparison with experimentally measured values of TWT and MDC efficiencies is made.

Segmented cold cathode display panel

The present invention is a video display device that utilizes the novel concept of generating an electronically controlled pattern of electron emission at the output of a segmented photocathode. This pattern of electron emission is amplified via a channel plate. The result is that an intense electronic image can be accelerated toward a phosphor thus creating a bright video image. This novel arrangement allows for one to provide a full color flat video display capable of implementation in large formats. In an alternate arrangement, the present invention is provided without the channel plate and a porous conducting surface is provided instead. In this alternate arrangement, the brightness of the image is reduced but the cost of the overall device is significantly lowered because fabrication complexity is significantly decreased.

Common source cascode amplifiers for integrating IR-FPA applications

Space based astronomical infrared measurements present stringent performance requirements on the infrared detector arrays and their associated readout circuitry. To evaluate the usefulness of commercial CMOS technology for astronomical readout applications a theoretical and experimental evaluation was performed on source follower and common-source cascode integrating amplifiers. Theoretical analysis indicates that for conditions where the input amplifier integration capacitance is limited by the detectors capacitance the input referred rms noise electrons of each amplifier should be equivalent. For conditions of input gate limited capacitance the source follower should provide lower noise. Measurements of test circuits containing both source follower and common source cascode circuits showed substantially lower input referred noise for the common-source cascode input circuits. Noise measurements yielded 4.8 input referred rms noise electrons for an 8.5 minute integration. The signal and noise gain of the common-source cascode amplifier appears to offer substantial advantages in acheiving predicted noise levels.

High resolution color band pyrometer ratioing

The sensing head of a two-color band ratioing pyrometer of a known type using a fiber optic cable to couple radiation to dual detector photodiodes is improved to have high spatial resolution by focusing the radiation received through an objective lens (i.e., by focusing the image of a target area) onto an opaque sheet spaced in front of the input end of the fiber optic cable. A two-mil hole in that sheet then passes radiation to the input end of the cable. The detector has two channels, one for each color band, with an electronic-chopper stabilized current amplifier as the input stage followed by an electronic-chopper stabilized voltage amplifier.
