Getting Started with Evaluations with Means and Uncertainties (EMU 3.0)

One of the most fundamental quantities in nuclear physics is the reaction cross section. A cross section represents the probability that a nuclear reaction will resolve through a given channel given a target nucleus and a projectile with a certain energy. A nuclear evaluation is a set of discrete data and interpolation rules to convert those discrete nuclear reaction data—such as the cross section—into a continuous function at arbitrary energies. Evaluated nuclear data files that can appear in Evaluated Nuclear Data File (ENDF) and Generalized Nuclear Data Structure (GNDS) formats, storing a “most-complete” discretized representation of nuclear data, based on both experimental measurements and theory models.

Validation of the SCALE/Polaris-PARCS Code Procedure with the ENDF/B-VII.1 AMPX 56-Group Library: Pressurized Water Reactor

This study was conducted to validate the SCALE/Polaris v6.3.0–PARCS v3.4.2 code procedure with the Evaluated Nuclear Data File (ENDF)/B-VII.1 AMPX 56-group library for pressurized water reactor (PWR) analysis, by comparing simulated results with measured data for critical experiments and operating PWRs. Uncertainties of the SCALE/Polaris–PARCS code procedure for PWR analysis were evaluated in the validation for the PWR key nuclear parameters such as critical boron concentrations, reactivity, control bank work, temperature coefficients, and pin and assembly power peaking factors.

Validation of the SCALE/Polaris–PARCS Code Procedure With the ENDF/B-VII.1 AMPX 56-Group Library: Boiling Water Reactor

The SCALE/Polaris–PARCS code procedure has been used in the confirmatory analysis for boiling water reactors by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission. In this study, the SCALE/Polaris v6.3.0–PARCS v3.4.2 code procedure with the Evaluated Nuclear Data File (ENDF)/B-VII.1 AMPX 56-group library was validated by comparing the simulated results with the measured data for operating boiling water reactors, including Peach Bottom Unit 2 cycles 1–3, Hatch Unit 1 cycles 1–3, and Quad Cities Unit 1 cycles 1–3. The uncertainties and biases of the SCALE/Polaris–PARCS code package for boiling water reactor physics analysis were evaluated in the validation for key nuclear parameters such as reactivity and traversing in-core probe data.

Analysis of NCERC Critical Experiments with ENDF/B Nuclear Data Libraries

Nuclear data (ND) libraries are the backbone of the nuclear industry, as they are the collections of tabulated probabilities that define sub-atomic particle interactions with matter. In the areas of criticality safety and experiments, no evaluated nuclear data files (ENDF) are more important than those containing neutron cross section data. It is upon these files, and accompanying radiation transport codes, that practitioners are enabled to safely design both subcritical and critical systems. Likewise, in a symbiotic fashion, it is the same critical assemblies which are used primarily to validate that the cross sections are correct. The ENDF/B library, the United States’ national library maintained by the National Nuclear Data Center (NNDC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), is soon releasing a new version, ENDF/B-VIII.1. Prior to the official release, several beta versions of the library were prepared and tested in simulation suites. The work presented here are results comparing the newest ENDF/B beta release (ENDF/B-VIII.1b3) and ENDF/B-VIII.0 with recent experiments done at the National Criticality Experiments Research Center (NCERC) as well as correlated experiments from the Los Alamos Critical Experiments Facility (LACEF). These NCERC and LACEF experiments were performed in part to provide validation for various cross sections that were identified as insufficient in the ENDF/B-VIII.0. In particular, lead, copper, fluorine, and chlorine, as well as the major actinides, were targeted from the last decade of critical experiments.

The ENDF/B Nuclear Data Library and Its Impact on Reactor Simulations

The ENDF/B library, which is developed, maintained, and distributed by the Cross Section Evaluation Working Group, is the main source of nuclear data for analyses and computational simulations in nuclear applications, like different nuclear reactors concepts, radiation shielding, medical applications, astrophysics, etc. The library is constantly being improved and updated, with each release bringing an optimal representation of nuclear interactions as they are understood in their time. The most recent release, ENDF/B-VIII.1, represents a significant improvement in terms of the performance and consistency of the measured differential data relative to previous versions, as it combines the most recent experimental differential data and advanced theoretical nuclear models. As one of the many highlights, ENDF/B-VIII.1 restores a high-burnup depletion performance, comparable to ENDF/B-VII.1, that had been degraded in ENDF/B-VIII.0, while further improving the performance in criticality benchmarks, such as those in the Mosteller’s suite. Additionally noteworthy is the improved performance of ENDF/B-VIII.1 in radiation shielding and thick-target leakage spectrum integral experiments, which are also important for fusion and reactor applications. In this work we present in a very summarized way the main updates implemented in the ENDF/B-VIII.1 release and its main impacts, and also begin to delineate the path forward as to what to expect in the future for the next ENDF/B release, which, based on the timeline of the past few releases, is estimated to happen around 5 years from now. We emphasize that the ENDF/B-VIII.1 release was the product of an enormous collaborative effort among many authors and that for a complete detailed picture, the reader is strongly encouraged to refer to the article accompanying the release, which is currently in the publication process, but available as preprint [G. P. A. Nobre et al. arXiv Preprint arXiv: 2511.03564 (2025)].
