Optimize out-of-core thermionic energy conversion for nuclear electric propulsion

Thermionic energy conversion (TEC) potentialities for nuclear electric propulsion (NEP) are examined. Considering current designs, their limitations, and risks raises critical questions about the use of TEC for NEP. Apparently a reactor cooled by hotter-than-1675 K heat pipes has good potentialities. TEC with higher temperatures and greater power densities than the currently proposed 1650 K, 5-to-6 W/sq cm version offers substantial gains. Other approaches to high-temperature electric isolation appear also promising. A high-power-density, high-temperature TEC for NEP appears, therefore, attainable. It is recommended to optimize out-of-core thermionic energy conversion for nuclear electric propulsion. Although current TEC designs for NEP seem unnecessary compared with Brayton versions, large gains are apparently possible with increased temperatures and greater power densities.

Efficiency and Physical Limitations of Adiabatic Direct Energy Conversion in Axisymmetric Fields

We describe and analyze a new class of direct energy conversion schemes based on the adiabatic magnetic drift of charged particles in axisymmetric magnetic fields. The efficiency of conversion as well as the geometrical and dynamical limitations of the recoverable power are calculated. The geometries of these axisymmetric field configurations are suited for direct energy conversion in radiating advanced aneutronic reactors and in advanced divertors of deuterium-tritium tokamak reactors. The E × B configurations considered here do not suffer from the classical drawbacks and limitations of thermionic and magnetohydrodynamic high-temperature direct energy conversion devices.

Visible light to electrical energy conversion using photoelectrochemical cells

Sustained conversion of low energy visible or near i.r. light (>1.25 eV) to electrical energy has been obtained using wet photoelectrochemical cells where there are no net chemical changes in the system. Stabilization of n-type semi-conductor anodes of CdS, CdSe, CdTe, GaP, GaAs and InP to photoanodic dissolution is achieved by employing selected alkaline solutions of Na.sub.2 S, Na.sub.2 S/S, Na.sub.2 Se, Na.sub.2 Se/Se, Na.sub.2 Te and Na.sub.2 Te/Te as the electrolyte. The oxidation of (poly) sulfide, (poly)selenide or (poly)telluride species occurs at the irradiated anode, and reduction of polysulfide, polyselenide or polytelluride species occurs at the dark Pt cathode of the photoelectrochemical cell. Optical to electrical energy conversion efficiencies approaching 15% at selected frequencies have been observed in some cells. The wavelength for the onset of photocurrent corresponds to the band gap of the particular anode material used in the cell.

Energy conversion processes in the outer planets

Energy conversion processes which are potentially important in the outer planets at pressures greater than obut 0.1 bar are reviewed. Generation of buoyancy contrasts by condensation of various constituents is discussed with emphasis on the possible significance of phase changes in substances such as Si and Mg compounds at deep levels. It is demonstrated that, in the absence of nonequilibrium thermodynamic processes, strong kinetic energy generation must accompany the transport of heat out of the high temperature planetary interiors. The possibly dominant role of lagged parahydrogen conversion in the convective transport of heat at levels where T is less than 300 K is discussed. Measurements which may ultimately contribute to a better understanding of energy conversion processes are summarized.

Driven magnetic reconnection in three dimensions - Energy conversion and field-aligned current generation

The energy conversion processes occurring in three-dimensional driven reconnection is analyzed. In particular, the energy conversion processes during localized reconnection in a taillike magnetic configuration are studied. It is found that three-dimensional driven reconnection is a powerful energy converter which transforms magnetic energy into plasma bulk flow and thermal energy. Three-dimensional driven reconnection is an even more powerful energy converter than two-dimensional reconnection, because in the three-dimensional case, plasmas were drawn into the reconnection region from the sides as well as from the top and bottom. Field-aligned currents are generated by three-dimensional driven reconnection. The physical mechanism responsible for these currents which flow from the tail toward the ionosphere on the dawnside of the reconnection region and from the ionosphere toward the tail on the duskside is identified. The field-aligned currents form as the neutral sheet current is diverted through the slow shocks which form on the outer edge of the reconnected field lines (outer edge of the plasma sheet).

Magnetic Energy Conversion in Magnetohydrodynamics: Curvature Relaxation and Perpendicular Expansion of Magnetic Fields

Abstract The mechanisms and pathways of magnetic energy conversion are an important subject for many laboratory, space, and astrophysical systems. Here, we present a perspective on magnetic energy conversion in magnetohydrodynamics through magnetic field curvature relaxation (CR) and perpendicular expansion (PE) due to magnetic pressure gradients, and quantify their relative importance in two representative cases, namely 3D magnetic reconnection and 3D kink-driven instability in an astrophysical jet. We find that the CR and PE processes have different temporal and spatial evolutions in these systems. The relative importance of the two processes tends to reverse as the system enters the nonlinear stage from the instability growth stage. Overall, the two processes make comparable contributions to magnetic energy conversion, with the PE process somewhat stronger than the CR process. We further explore how these energy conversion terms can be related to particle energization in these systems.

Frontiers in Thermal Transport and Energy Conversion: Proceedings of a Workshop

Thermal transport and energy conversion has remained an active field for at least 200 years, with numerous opportunities for discoveries and new applications. Recently, experiments have advanced researchers’ understanding of basic physics, and how new discoveries might translate into applications in energy, materials, quantum technologies, and other areas. The National Academies convened a workshop on April 11, 2019 to identify and assess the frontier of current research in the field of thermal transport and energy conversion. Discussions involved topics related to thermal transport and quasi-particle hydrodynamics, thermal transport beyond the quasiparticle paradigm, the thermal hall effect from neutral spin excitations in frustrated quantum magnets, quantization of the thermal hall conductivity at small hall angles, and thermal spin transport, including spin-Seebeck and magnon drag effects. These topics were strategically selected with the goal of uncovering key challenges, opportunities, and issues in order to guide future efforts and investments to advance the field. This publication offers a condensed summary of the discussions and presentations from the workshop, which was unclassified and open to the public.

Controlling Interfacial Energetics and Charge Transfer Rates in 2D Semiconductors: Fundamental Studies en Route to Photoelectrochemical Energy Conversion Beyond the Shockley-Queisser Limit (Final Scientific/Technical Report)

Current photovoltaic and solar-to-fuel technologies do not fully utilize the energy of sunlight because excess photon energy above the semiconductor band gap is rapidly lost as heat through hot-carrier thermalization. Overcoming this loss mechanism is critical, as hot-carrier-based energy conversion systems are predicted to exceed the conventional efficiency limit of ~33%. This project advanced fundamental understanding of hot-carrier energy conversion in two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors, with a focus on monolayer MoS 2 . Using a combination of electrochemical microscopy and in situ ultrafast spectroscopic measurements, this research directly demonstrated hot-carrier extraction from monolayer MoS 2 photoelectrodes in proof-of-concept liquid junction solar cells. These measurements established that hot-carrier transfer can compete with ultrafast carrier cooling at solid–liquid interfaces, providing unambiguous experimental evidence that hot-carrier extraction is feasible in atomically thin semiconductors under operating photoelectrochemical conditions. Beyond demonstration, the project identified design rules for tuning hot-carrier extraction rates relative to cooling rates in 2D semiconductor photoelectrodes. The outcomes of this research provide foundational thermodynamic and kinetic insights for the rational design of next-generation hot-carrier-enabled solar energy conversion systems. These findings have broad implications for photoelectrochemical solar fuels production, electrocatalysis, and emerging energy conversion architectures that seek to harness nonequilibrium charge carriers for enhanced efficiency.

Quantifying Energy Conversion in Higher-Order Phase Space Density Moments in Plasmas

Weakly collisional and collisionless plasmas are typically far from local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE), and understanding energy conversion in such systems is a forefront research problem. The standard approach is to investigate changes in internal (thermal) energy and density, but this omits energy conversion that changes any higher-order moments of the phase space density. In this Letter, we calculate from first principles the energy conversion associated with all higher moments of the phase space density for systems not in LTE. Particle-in-cell simulations of collisionless magnetic reconnection reveal that energy conversion associated with higher-order moments can be locally significant. Furthermore, the results may be useful in numerous plasma settings, such as reconnection, turbulence, shocks, and wave-particle interactions in heliospheric, planetary, and astrophysical plasmas.
