Twilight and nighttime ionospheric temperatures from oxygen wavelengths 6300 and 5577 spectral line profiles

Fabry-Perot interferometer measurements of atomic oxygen 6300 A and 5577 A line profiles from twilight and nightglow are used to determine the neutral temperatures in F2 and E regions of the earth's ionosphere. The exospheric temperatures T sub n (infinity) determined from the 6300 A profiles are usually somewhat higher than those calculated from Jacchia's model, with differences as large as approximately 300 K noted when T sub n (infinity) = 1500 to 1600 K. The post-sunset and pre-dawn rate of change of T sub n (infinity) is often substantially larger than the Jacchia prediction. The 5577 A (E-region) measured temperatures range from 200 to 220 K on quiet nights to 500 to 600 K during geomagnetic storms.

Exhaust plume structure in a quasi-steady MPD arc.

Results of spectroscopic and photographic investigations revealing a complex azimuthal species structure in the exhaust plume of a quasi-steady argon MPD arc. The features of the plume structure are found to be dependent on the arc current and mass flow rate. Time-resolved spectroscopic velocity measurements, obtained by a scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer, indicate argon ion jet velocities of 16,500 m/sec at a current of 16 kA and a matched mass flow of 6 g/sec. It is found that nearly half this velocity is attained in an acceleration region well downstream of the region of significant electromagnetic interaction. Temperature measurements suggest that simple expansion processes in the argon jets cannot fully explain the observed acceleration. It is possible that a transfer of momentum from the ablated core flow to the argon jets may contribute to the high argon velocities.

Twilight and nighttime ionospheric temperatures from oxygen 6300- and 5577-A spectral-line profiles.

Use of Fabry-Perot interferometer measurements of atomic-oxygen 6300- and 5577-A line profiles from twilight and nightglow to determine the neutral temperatures in the F2 and E regions of the earth's ionosphere. The exospheric temperatures determined from the 6300-A profiles are usually somewhat higher than the temperatures calculated from Jacchia's model, and differences as large as about 300 K are noted when the exospheric temperature equals 1500 to 1600 K. The postsunset and predawn rate of change of the exospheric temperature is often substantially larger than the Jacchia prediction. The 5577-A (E region) measured temperatures range from 200 to 220 K on quiet nights to 500 to 600 K during geomagnetic storms.

A cavity type absorption cell for double resonance microwave spectroscopy.

Description of an experimental dual resonant cavity absorption cell for observing microwave spectroscopic double-resonance effects. The device is composed of two Fabry-Perot interferometers excited by independent microwave sources and mounted at right angles in a suitable vacuum enclosure. The pumping transition is modulated by one source and the modulation induced on the rf absorption in the orthogonal cavity is detected.

Doppler shift system

A system is described for measuring velocities of radiating particles based on Doppler shift. Light from the particles is directed through a narrow band optical filter to a Fabry-Perot interferometer initially tuned to a selected center line corresponding to zero particle Doppler shift. The movable mirror of the interferometer is made to sweep about the center line by the output of a modulation oscillator. The fringe pattern output is imaged onto a pin hole through which light is directed to a photomultiplier. The output of the photomultiplier is supplied to a phase sensitive detector with the oscillator output as a reference signal and which operates in the quadrature mode. The detector's output is gain controlled and is combined with the oscillator's output to adjust the interferometer's movable mirror to acquire the line center.

Brillouin-scattering measurements of the acoustic absorption coefficient in liquid CS2

High-resolution Brillouin spectra were recorded for light scattered at small angles from liquid CS2. The use of a single-mode He-Ne laser, locked in frequency to a Fabry-Perot interferometer, permitted measurements of line widths of the order of 10 MHz for frequencies in the range 300-1000 MHz. These measurements extend previous Brillouin line-width measurements at higher frequencies into the region where relaxation effects are dominant and connect the optical measurements with lower-frequency acoustical data.
