The spectrum of random magnetic fields in the mean field dynamo theory of the Galactic magnetic field

The fluctuation spectrum that must arise in a mean field dynamo generation of galactic fields if the initial field is weak is considered. A kinetic equation for its evolution is derived and solved. The spectrum evolves by transfer of energy from one magnetic mode to another by interaction with turbulent velocity modes. This kinetic equation is valid in the limit that the rate of evolution of the magnetic modes is slower than the reciprocal decorrelation time of the turbulent modes. This turns out to be the case by a factor greater than 3. Most of the fluctuation energy concentrates on small scales, shorter than the hydrodynamic turbulent scales. The fluctuation energy builds up to equipartition with the turbulent energy in times that are short compared to the e-folding time of the mean field. The turbulence becomes strongly modified before the dynamo amplification starts. Thus, the kinematic assumption of the mean dynamo theory is invalid. Thus, the galactic field must have a primordial origin, although it may subsequently be modified by dynamo action.

Aerodynamic Mixing Downstream from Line Source of Heat in High-intensity Sound Field

Theory and measurement showed that the heat wake downstream from a line source is displaced by a transverse standing sound wave in a manner similar to a flag waving in a harmonic mode. With a 147 db, 104 cps standing wave, time-mean temperatures were reduced by an order of magnitude except near the displacement-pattern nodal points. The theory showed that a 161 db, 520 cps standing wave considerably increased the mixing in both the time-mean and instantaneous senses.

Coupled mixed-field laminate theory and finite element for smart piezoelectric composite shell structures

Mechanics for the analysis of laminated composite shells with piezoelectric actuators and sensors are presented. A new mixed-field laminate theory for piezoelectric shells is formulated in curvilinear coordinates which combines single-layer assumptions for the displacements and a layerwise representation for the electric potential. The resultant coupled governing equations for curvilinear piezoelectric laminates are described. Structural mechanics are subsequently developed and an 8-node finite-element is formulated for the static and dynamic analysis of adaptive composite structures of general laminations containing piezoelectric layers. Evaluations of the method and comparisons with reported results are presented for laminated piezoelectric-composite plates, a closed cylindrical shell with a continuous piezoceramic layer and a laminated composite semi-circular cantilever shell with discrete cylindrical piezoelectric actuators and/or sensors.

Implications of the Pioneer 10 measurements of the Jovian magnetic field for theories of Io-modulated decametric radiation

The configuration of the magnetic field of Jupiter imposes constraints upon theoretical models of decametric emission triggered by Io, with respect to such features as the frequency of the emission, the density of the inner plasmasphere, and the beaming pattern. Owing to the northern offset of the field model reported by Smith et al. (1974), the upper ranges of observed decametric frequencies can be equated to the electron gyrofrequency only in the northern hemisphere, in regions outside the trapping volume of radiation-belt particles. Emission mechanisms in which the frequency is at or very near the electron gyrofrequency must be stimulated by Io either through acceleration and precipitation of particles or through generation of MHD waves. Mechanisms invoking trapped particles are consistent with wave amplification in the southern hemisphere at the upper hybrid frequency, imposing a lower bound on the density of thermal plasma near the planet.

Large numbers hypothesis. IV - The cosmological constant and quantum physics

In standard physics quantum field theory is based on a flat vacuum space-time. This quantum field theory predicts a nonzero cosmological constant. Hence the gravitational field equations do not admit a flat vacuum space-time. This dilemma is resolved using the units covariant gravitational field equations. This paper shows that the field equations admit a flat vacuum space-time with nonzero cosmological constant if and only if the canonical LNH is valid. This allows an interpretation of the LNH phenomena in terms of a time-dependent vacuum state. If this is correct then the cosmological constant must be positive.

Chaotic structures of nonlinear magnetic fields. I - Theory. II - Numerical results

A study of the evolutionary properties of nonlinear magnetic fields in flowing MHD plasmas is presented to illustrate that nonlinear magnetic fields may involve chaotic dynamics. It is shown how a suitable transformation of the coupled equations leads to Duffing's form, suggesting that the behavior of the general solution can also be chaotic. Numerical solutions of the nonlinear magnetic field equations that have been cast in the form of Duffing's equation are presented.

Workshop on Squeezed States and Uncertainty Relations

The proceedings from the workshop are presented, and the focus was on the application of squeezed states. There are many who say that the potential for industrial applications is enormous, as the history of the conventional laser suggests. All those who worked so hard to produce squeezed states of light are continuing their efforts to construct more efficient squeezed-state lasers. Quite naturally, they are looking for new experiments using these lasers. The physical basis of squeezed states is the uncertainty relation in Fock space, which is also the basis for the creation and annihilation of particles in quantum field theory. Indeed, squeezed states provide a unique opportunity for field theoreticians to develop a measurement theory for quantum field theory.

Four-dimensional symmetry from a broad viewpoint. II Invariant distribution of quantized field oscillators and questions on infinities

The foundation of the quantum field theory is changed by introducing a new universal probability principle into field operators: one single inherent and invariant probability distribution P(/k/) is postulated for boson and fermion field oscillators. This can be accomplished only when one treats the four-dimensional symmetry from a broad viewpoint. Special relativity is too restrictive to allow such a universal probability principle. A radical length, R, appears in physics through the probability distribution P(/k/). The force between two point particles vanishes when their relative distance tends to zero. This appears to be a general property for all forces and resembles the property of asymptotic freedom. The usual infinities in vacuum fluctuations and in local interactions, however complicated they may be, are all removed from quantum field theories. In appendix A a simple finite and unitary theory of unified electroweak interactions is discussed without assuming Higgs scalar bosons.

General design method for three-dimensional potential flow fields. 1: Theory

A general design method was developed for steady, three dimensional, potential, incompressible or subsonic-compressible flow. In this design method, the flow field, including the shape of its boundary, was determined for arbitrarily specified, continuous distributions of velocity as a function of arc length along the boundary streamlines. The method applied to the design of both internal and external flow fields, including, in both cases, fields with planar symmetry. The analytic problems associated with stagnation points, closure of bodies in external flow fields, and prediction of turning angles in three dimensional ducts were reviewed.

Aircraft aerodynamic design and evaluation methods

This paper presents some practical methods for the aerodynamic design and evaluation of conventional aircraft. High-lift methodology which provides improved takeoff and landing and transonic maneuvering performance is discussed. Also, new techniques for estimating and minimizing cruise pressure drag are presented. These include a far-field theory to minimize trimmed induced drag, theories to estimate the spanwise variation of drag due to thickness and lift, and a far-field theory to estimate total pressure drag. In addition to the description of methods, aerodynamic design procedures are outlined and results from both the design and evaluation methods are presented.

Thermal relaxation of a two-dimensional plasma in a d.c. magnetic field. I - Theory. II - Numerical simulation

Theoretical considerations relevant to the rate of thermal relaxation of a two-dimensional plasma in a strong uniform dc magnetic field are developed. The Vahala-Montgomery (1971) kinetic description is completed by providing a cut-off time for the time of interaction of two particles contributing to the collision term. The kinetic equation is shown to predict that thermal relaxation varies as a function of defined dimensionless time.

The effect of fluctuations on the electrical transport behavior in YBa2Cu3O(7-x)

The excess conductivity behavior of highly oriented YBa2Cu3O(7-x) thin films prepared by both coevaporation and laser ablation was studied in detail in the reduced-temperature range 9 x 10(exp -4) is less than t is less than 1. The excess conductivity in all the films studied was found to diverge sharply near T(sub c), in agreement with the conventional mean-field theory. However, the detailed temperature dependence could not be fitted to either the power-law or the logarithmic functional forms as predicted by the theory. The excess conductivity of all the films was found to be exponentially dependent on the temperature over nearly three decades for 9 x 10(exp -4) is less than t is less than 10(exp -1), in contradiction to the mean-field theory.
