Lowering and Runtime Support for Fortran’s Multi-Image Parallel Features using LLVM Flang, PRIF, and Caffeine

This paper provides an overview of the multi-image parallel features in Fortran 2023 and their implementation in the LLVM flang compiler and the Caffeine parallel runtime library. The features of interest support a Single-Program, Multiple-Data (SPMD) programming model based on executing multiple “images”, each of which is a program instance. The features also support a Partitioned Global Address Space (PGAS) in the form of “coarray” distributed data structures. The paper discusses the lowering of multi-image features to the Parallel Runtime Interface for Fortran (PRIF) and the implementation of PRIF in the Caffeine parallel runtime library. This paper also provides an early view into the design of a new multi-image dialect of the LLVM Multi-Level Intermediate Representation (MLIR). We describe validation and testing of the resulting software stack, and demonstrate that performance compares favorably to another open-source compiler and runtime library: GNU Compiler Collection (GCC) gfortran and OpenCoarrays, respectively.

ALARA Review for Venting of Flanged Tritium Waste Containers (FTWCs) at TA-54

This project will vent headspace hydrogen and oxygen from specialized high-pressure storage vessels called flanged tritium waste containers (FTWCs). There are four of these containers located in Los Alamos National Laboratory’s (LANL’s) Technical Area 54 (TA-54), Building 1028. This building is in the southwest corner of LANL’s Material Disposal Area G. The vented headspace gas is expected to contain tritium in the form of water vapor, elemental hydrogen or a combination of both. The venting operation is expected to take place in 2025. There will be a series of operational readiness reviews prior to venting activities commencing. The FTWCs at TA-54 contain tritium-contaminated metal parts and molecular sieve media, which is a pebble-like material used to absorb water vapor from the air. This molecular sieve media inside the FTWCs is contained in metal canisters, along with some loose media material in bags. Over time, tritiated water vapor that had been adsorbed onto the media can become liberated into the FTWC headspace gas. Radiolysis can cause separation of the water vapor into its hydrogen and oxygen components, resulting in the potentially hazardous gas mixture within the FTWC. LANL has determined that continued tritium storage in these containers can pose an unsafe condition due to possible hydrogen and oxygen gas buildup within the FTWCs with a potential for explosion if sparks are generated within the FTWCs. To mitigate this hazard, the FTWCs will be stabilized by venting them in-place to remove hazardous gases.

TA-54 Flanged Tritium Waste Container Operations, Radioactive Air Emissions Summary Volume 1: Stack Emissions & Off-Site Dose Consequence

In September 2025, pressure mitigation operations began on the four Flanged Tritium Waste Containers (FTWCs) that had been in storage at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), Technical Area (TA-) 54, Area G, Building 1028. Each FTWC was opened at TA-54 and put into a stable configuration, then containers were moved to LANL’s Weapons Engineering Tritium Facility (WETF) for further processing in preparation for shipment off-site. Over the course of 13 operational days, the project had air emissions of 123 curies of tritium (hydrogen-3). The radiological dose to the hypothetical maximally exposed individual (MEI) member of the public from these emissions was 0.012 millirem. This is well within the limits established by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which allows 10 millirem per year to any member of the public. Naturally occurring background radiation in Northern New Mexico averages about 300-400 millirem per year to residents. This report is intended to briefly summarize operations that took place in September and October 2025, provide documentation of the radionuclide air emissions from these operations, and summarize the off-site dose consequence to the public that resulted from these air emissions. Informal notifications addressing these areas were made via email to the EPA and NMED throughout the project, and summaries of these data were also posted on the LANL external web site 1 for FTWC operations.

Parallel Runtime Interface for Fortran (PRIF): A Multi-Image Solution for LLVM Flang

Fortran compilers that provide support for Fortran’s native parallel features often do so with a runtime library that depends on details of both the compiler implementation and the communication library, while others provide limited or no support at all. This paper introduces a new generalized interface that is both compiler- and runtime-library-agnostic, providing flexibility while fully supporting all of Fortran’s parallel features. The Parallel Runtime Interface for Fortran (PRIF) was developed to be portable across shared- and distributed-memory systems, with varying operating systems, toolchains and architectures. It achieves this by defining a set of Fortran procedures corresponding to each of the parallel features defined in the Fortran standard that may be invoked by a Fortran compiler and implemented by a runtime library. PRIF aims to be used as the solution for LLVM Flang to provide parallel Fortran support. This paper also briefly describes our PRIF prototype implementation: Caffeine.

Theoretical study of corrugated plates: Shear stiffness of a trapezoidally corrugated plate with discrete attachments to a rigid flange at the ends of the corrugations

Analysis and numerical results are presented for the elastic shear stiffness of a corrugated shear web with a certain type of discrete attachments at the ends of the trough lines of the corrugations, namely point attachments to a rigid flange which interferes with the deformations of the end cross sections by preventing downward movement but permitting upward (lifting off) movement. The analysis is based on certain assumed modes of deformation of the cross sections in conjunction with the method of minimum total potential energy and the calculus of variations in order to obtain equations for the manner in which the assumed modes of deformation vary along the length of the corrugation. The numerical results are restricted to the case of equal-width crests and troughs but otherwise apply to a wide variety of geometries. They are in the form of graphs which give the overall shear stiffness as a fraction of the overall shear stiffness that could be obtained by having continuous attachment at the ends of the corrugations.

Structural evaluation of Marman V-band coupling and flange with conoseal gasket

Results are described of a development test program directed at evaluating the structural capabilities of the Marman V-band coupling and flange with conoseal gasket. The intended end use was for the 75K NERVA flight engine propellant lines. Of major importance in the structural evaluation was the ability to predict stresses throughout the assembly for a variety of loading conditions. Computer finite element analysis was used to predict these stresses but, for the subject configuration, large uncertainties were introduced in modeling the complex geometry and boundary conditions. The purpose of the structural tests was to obtain actual stresses and deflections for correlation with, and updating of the finite element model. Results of the incomplete test program are inconclusive with respect to determining suitability for use on the NERVA engine.

The shear-stress intensity factor for a centrally cracked stiff-flanged shear web

By use of the principle of superposition the stiff-flanged shear web is modeled mathematically by an infinite elastic strip with fixed longitudinal edges. The shear-stress intensity factor for a central longitudinal crack is calculated for various values of the ratio of strip width to crack length, h/a, in the range 0.1-10. The interaction of the crack with the boundaries is illustrated by boundary shear-stress distributions for three values of h/a. Some implications of the results for the design of damage-tolerant shear webs are discussed briefly.

Compact positioning flange

Flange adjusts center of rotation of gimble-mounted objects such as telescopes. Three aluminum plates are machined to have interlocking orthogonal keys and ways. Outer plate is mounted to shaft. Inner plate is attached to object. Middle and inner plate slide along on axis. Screws slide in slots parallel to ways for adjustment, then tighten to lock position along each axis. Device is similar to crossed ways found on industrial machine tools, but simpler, lighter, and much smaller.
