Construction and commissioning of CMS CE prototype silicon modules

As part of its HL-LHC upgrade program, the CMS collaboration is developing a High Granularity Calorimeter (CE) to replace the existing endcap calorimeters. The CE is a sampling calorimeter with unprecedented transverse and longitudinal readout for both electromagnetic (CEE) and hadronic (CE-H) compartments. The calorimeter will be built with ~30,000 hexagonal silicon modules. Prototype modules have been constructed with 6-inch hexagonal silicon sensors with cell areas of 1.1 cm 2 , and the SKIROC2-CMS readout ASIC. Beam tests of different sampling configurations were conducted with the prototype modules at DESY and CERN in 2017 and 2018. This paper describes the construction and commissioning of the CE calorimeter prototype, the silicon modules used in the construction, their basic performance, and the methods used for their calibration.

Viral Load Kinetics of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 in Hospitalized Individuals With Coronavirus Disease 2019

Abstract Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) kinetics remain understudied, including the impact of remdesivir. In hospitalized individuals, peak sputum viral load occurred in week 2 of symptoms, whereas viremia peaked within 1 week of symptom-onset, suggesting early systemic seeding of SARS-CoV-2. Remdesivir treatment was associated with faster viral decay.

Multiple valence-space and core-excited band terminations in Ho and Er isotopes

High-spin structures of holmium (𝑍 = 67) and erbium (𝑍 = 68) isotopes are presented near mass 160, a region where collective and single-particle modes of excitation compete in the generation of angular momentum at the highest experimentally attainable spins in atomic nuclei. The level schemes of the 156,157,158 Ho isotopes have been significantly extended, reaching spins in the 40⁢ℏ to 55⁢ℏ range, through multiple experiments utilizing the Gammasphere spectrometer. In particular, several new noncollective band-terminating states are reported for these nuclei. The nature of these states, including both valence-space terminations and core-excited oblateconfigurations, is discussed in terms of proton particle-hole (p-h) excitations across the semimagic 𝑍 = 64 shell closure. Cranked-Nilsson–Strutinsky (CNS) calculations have been used to interpret the nature of these noncollective states. The corresponding terminating states in 154–159 Er are also included, providing a systematic description of band termination in this mass region. In addition, three weak rotational structures have been assigned to 157 Ho at the highest spins. These collective bands are proposed to be based on a triaxial strongly deformed nuclear shape, involving neutron p-h excitations across the 𝑁 = 82 shell gap.

Level structure of light neutron-rich La isotopes beyond the 𝑁 = 82 shell closure

Here, the high spin excited states of Lanthanum isotopes 140–143 La, above the 𝑁 = 82 closed shell, were populated in fission reactions. The prompt 𝛾-ray transitions were measured using two complementary methods: (a) in coincidence with the isotopically identified fragments produced in the fission of the 238 U + 9 Be system using the Variable Mode Spectrometer (VAMOS++) and the Advanced Gamma Tracking Array (AGATA) spectrometer, and (b) high statistics threefold 𝛾−𝛾−𝛾 and fourfold 𝛾−𝛾−𝛾−𝛾 coincidence data from the spontaneous fission of 252 Cf using the Gammasphere. This work reports the first identification of a pair of parity doublet structures in 143 La and the new high spin level structure in 140–142 La from prompt 𝛾-ray spectroscopy. The level structures are interpreted in terms of the systematics of neighboring odd-𝑍 nuclei above the 𝑍 = 50 shell closure and large-scale shell model calculations. The present results indicate the presence of stable octupole deformation in 143 La. The excitation energy pattern and their comparison with neighboring isotones, moving away from the 𝑁 = 82 closed shell, point towards a transition from single-particle structures to an alternating parity rotational band structure in the La isotopic chain.

Rotational bands in 249 Md

Rotational structures in 249 Md have been observed for the first time. One set of states forms a pair of strongly coupled bands with relatively strong E2 transitions and no identifiable M1 transitions between the two signature partners. Another set of states suggests a decoupled sequence of E2 transitions. Furthermore, these bands are assigned as based on the 7/2 − [514] and on the favored signature of the 1/2 - [521] Nilsson level, respectively. Based on previous decay studies, these levels are thought to be the ground state and first excited state of 249 Md, which also agrees with theoretical predictions.

Investigation of the 244 Pu ⁢( 48 Ca,𝑥⁢𝑛) 292−𝑥 Fl reaction with the LBNL SHREC detector: Investigation of decay chains of isotopes of flerovium (𝑍=114)

The 244 Pu ⁢( 48 Ca,𝑥⁢𝑛)⁢ 292−𝑥 Fl reaction was investigated at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s 88 Inch Cyclotron using the Berkeley Gas-filled Separator (BGS), the newly installed Superheavy Recoil detector, along with an upgraded digital electronics and data acquisition system. Seven decay chains were observed starting with an evaporation residue, followed by a single 𝛼 decay and a spontaneous fission. The decay characteristics of these seven decay chains led to an assignment to 288 Fl , the product of the 4⁢𝑛 reaction channel. Two additional chains were (tentatively) assigned to the decay of the 3⁢𝑛 exit channel, 289 Fl . Cross sections for the 4⁢𝑛 and 3⁢𝑛 exit channels were 𝜎 prod =6.7⁢($^{36}_{25}$) pb and 𝜎 prod =1.6⁢($^{22}_{11}$) pb, respectively. Another decay chain, tentatively assigned to the 5⁢𝑛 exit channel through the 48 Ca + 244 Pu reaction or the 3⁢𝑛 exit channel of the 48 Ca + 242 Pu reaction, was also detected. Detailed information regarding the observed decay chains and their nuclear structure aspects is discussed, along with the performance of the BGS and the new detection system.

$β^-$ decay of $T_z$ = +$\frac{11}{2}$ isotopes $\mathrm{^{37}Al}$ and $\mathrm{^{39}Si}$: Understanding Gamow-Teller strength distribution in neutron-rich nuclei

$β^-$ decay of $T_z$ = +$\frac{11}{2}$ nuclei $\mathrm{^{37}Al}$ and $\mathrm{^{39}Si}$ was studied to obtain information about excited states in the daughter and granddaughter nuclei. New information on excited states has been obtained for $\mathrm{^{37,39}P}$ whereas level schemes for $\mathrm{^{37}Si}$ and $\mathrm{^{37,39}S}$ were confirmed and expanded on as compared to the most recent investigations. For the nuclei studied, the valence proton and neutron occupy different major shells with opposite parities, hence, the $β^-$ decay preferentially and primarily populates core-excited $1p1h$ intruder states with a parity opposite to the ground state of the daughter nucleus. These low-lying intruder states shed light on the $N = 20$ shell gap and its evolution with neutron number. The $β^-$ decay of very neutron-rich nuclei also illustrates how the Gamow-Teller (GT) strength distribution changes with neutron excess. Comparing $β^-$ decay of $\mathrm{^{37,39}Si}$ presented here with $\mathrm{^{38,40}Si}$ from a previous study, we clearly see an even-odd effect in the GT strength distribution with the decay from even-even nuclei showing strong low-lying strength whereas for the odd $A$ being very fragmented. Finally, configuration interaction shell-model calculations with the state-of-art SDPFSDG-MU effective interaction were performed to understand the structure of the $1p1h$ states and explore the GT strength distribution.

Probing the role of proton cross-shell excitations in Ni 70 using nucleon knockout reactions

The neutron-rich Ni isotopes have attracted attention in recent years because of the occurrence of shape or configuration coexistence. In this work, we discuss the difference in population of excited final states in 70 Ni following γ-ray tagged one-proton, one-neutron, and two-proton knockout from 71 Cu, 71 Ni, and 72 Zn rare-isotope beams, respectively. Using variations observed in the relative transition intensities, signaling the changed population of specific final states in the different reactions, the role of neutron and proton configurations in excited states of 70 Ni is probed schematically, with the goal of identifying those that carry, as leading configuration, proton excitations across the Z = 28 shell closure. Such states are implied in the literature to form a collective structure associated with prolate deformation. Adding to the body of knowledge for 70 Ni, 29 new transitions are reported, of which 15 are placed in its level scheme.

Evolution of collective and noncollective structures in 123 Xe

An experiment involving a heavy-ion-induced fusion-evaporation reaction was carried out where high-spin states of 123 Xe were populated in the 80 Se( 48 Ca,5n) 123 Xe reaction at 207 MeV beam energy. Gamma-ray coincidence events were recorded with the Gammasphere Ge detector array. The previously known level scheme was confirmed and enhanced with the addition of five new band structures and several interband transitions. Furthermore, cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky (CNS) calculations were performed and compared with the experimental results in order to assign configurations to the bands.

Enhancement of α -particle formation near Sn 100

The superfluid tunneling model is applied to the calculation of ground-state-to-ground-state α decay in the even-even neutron-deficient Te-Ba nuclei. Here, we show that there is a larger α-particle formation probability in nuclei of this region above 100 Sn when compared to analogous nuclei above 208 Pb. This is consistent with the expected systematic variation of the pair gap Δ as a function of mass number. Finally, the recent experimental data on the α decay of the N=Z nuclei 104 Te and 108 Xe are shown to leave open the possibility of enhanced α-particle formation involving nucleon correlations beyond the standard treatment of like-nucleon pairing, which is the mechanism suggested as underlying "superallowed" α decay.

Analysis of the 18 F g,m (d,p) 19 F reactions in the rotational model

Spectroscopic strengths for the 18 F g , m ( d , p ) F 19 reactions to members of the ground-state band in F 19 are interpreted in the rotational model. The analysis considers two different coupling schemes, namely, the strong and decoupled limits of the particle rotor model to describe the ground and isomeric states of F 18 , as well as the transitions to the ground-state band in F 19 . Our results, obtained using Nilsson amplitudes for the neutron levels 1 2 [ 220 ] , 3 2 [ 211 ] , and 5 2 [ 202 ] calculated at a deformation ε 2 = 0.32 are in agreement with the measurements and USDB shell-model calculations.

Prompt-delayed γ-ray spectroscopy of neutron-rich 119.121 In isotopes

The Z = 50 shell closure, near N = 82, is unique in the sense that it is the only shell closure with the spin-orbit partner orbitals, π g 9 / 2 and π g 7 / 2 , enclosing the magic gap. The interaction of the proton hole/particle in the above-mentioned orbitals with neutrons in the νh 11/2 orbital is an important prerequisite to the understanding of the nuclear structure near N = 82 and the νπ interaction. To explore the structural similarity between the high-spin isomeric states in In ( Z = 49), Sn ( Z = 50), and Sb ( Z = 51) isotopes from a microscopic point of view. In addition, to understand the role of a proton hole or particle in the spin-orbit partner orbitals, π g 9 / 2 and π g 7 / 2 , respectively, with neutron holes in the ν h 11 / 2 orbital on these aforementioned isomers. The fusion and transfer induced fission reaction Be 9 ( U 238 , f ) with 6.2 MeV/u beam energy, using a unique setup consisting of AGATA, VAMOS++, and EXOGAM detectors, was used to populate through the fission process and study the neutron-rich In 119 , 121 isotopes. This setup enabled the prompt-delayed γ -ray spectroscopy of isotopes in the time range of 100 ns – 200 μ s . In the odd- A In 119 , 121 isotopes, indications of a short half-life 19/2 - isomeric state, in addition to the previously known 25/2 + isomeric state, were observed from the present data. Further, new prompt transitions above the 25/2 + isomer in In 121 were identified along with reevaluation of its half-life. The experimental data were compared with the theoretical results obtained in the framework of large-scale shell-model calculations in a restricted model space. Furthermore, the ( π g 9 / 2 ν h 11 / 2 ; I | H ^ | π g 9 / 2 ν h 11 / 2 ; I ) two-body matrix elements of residual interaction were modified to explain the excitation energies and the B ( E 2) transition probabilities in the neutron-rich In isotopes. The (i) decreasing trend of E (29/2 + ) - E (25/2 + ) in odd-In (with dominant configuration π g 9 / 2 - 1 ν h 11 / 2 - 2 and maximum aligned spin of 29/2 + ) and (ii) increasing trend of E (27/2 + ) - E (23/2 + ) in odd-Sb (with dominant configuration π g 7 / 2 + 1 ν h 11 / 2 - 2 and maximum aligned spin of 27/2 + ) with increasing neutron number could be understood as a consequence of hole-hole and particle-hole interactions, respectively.

Core of 25 F in the rotational model

In a recent experiment, carried out at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory/RIKEN, the 25 F(p,2p) 24 O reaction was studied at 270 MeV/A in inverse kinematics. Derived spectroscopic factors suggest that the effective core of 25 F significantly differs from a free 24 O nucleus. We interpret these results within the particle-rotor model and show that the experimental level scheme of 25 F can be understood in the rotation-aligned coupling scheme with its 5/2$^{+}_{1}$ ground state as the bandhead of a decoupled band. Here, the excitation energies of the observed 1/2$^{+}_{1}$ and 9/2$^{+}_{1}$ states correlate strongly with the rotational energy of the effective core, seen by the odd proton, and allow us to estimate its 2 + energy at ≈3.2MeV and a moderate quadrupole deformation ϵ 2 ≈0.15. The measured fragmentation of the πd 5/2 single-particle strength is discussed, and some further experiments suggested.

Quadrupole and octupole collectivity in 143 Ba

The neutron-rich barium nuclei have been the subject of intense interest due to the enhanced octupole correlations they are predicted to exhibit. The observation of enhanced octupole collectivity in 144,146 Ba as measured in sub-barrier Coulomb excitation, consistent with static octupole deformation, has further heightened this interest. In the present work, these studies are extended to the neighboring odd-mass 143 Ba to investigate the interplay between single-particle and collective octupole degrees of freedom. A new measurement of the first 9/2 – -state lifetime is also presented. Reflection-Asymmetric Triaxial Particle Rotor Model calculations indicate that the negative-parity bands in 143 Ba can be understood as a decoupled structure of νh 9/2 parentage, while the positiveparity bands are built on a decoupled octupole phonon. Here, no evidence for E3 excitation is observed in this work, but an upper limit is placed on the E3 matrix element to the lowest octupole band.

Search for the 1/2 + intruder state in 35 P

The excitation energy of deformed intruder states (specifically the 2p2h bandhead) as a function of proton number Z along N = 20 is of interest both in terms of better understanding the evolution of nuclear structure between spherical Ca 40 and the Island of Inversion nuclei, and for benchmarking theoretical descriptions in this region. At the center of the N = 20 Island of Inversion, the n p n h (where n = 2 , 4 , 6 ) neutron excitations across a diminished N = 20 gap result in deformed and collective ground states, as observed in Mg 32 . In heavier isotones, n p n h excitations do not dominate in the ground states but are present in the relatively low-lying level schemes. With the aim of identifying the expected 2 p 2 h x s 1 / 2 + state in P 35 , the only N = 20 isotone for which the neutron 2p2h excitation bandhead has not yet been identified, the S 36 ( d , He 3 ) P 35 reaction has been revisited in inverse kinematics with the HELical Orbit Spectrometer (HELIOS) at the Argonne Tandem Linac Accelerator System (ATLAS). While a candidate state has not been located, an upper limit for the transfer reaction cross section to populate such a configuration within a 2.5 to 3.6 MeV energy range provides a stringent constraint on the wave function compositions in both S 36 and P 35 .

Highly deformed band structures due to core excitations in 123 Xe

High-spin states in 123 Xe were populated in the 80 Se( 48 Ca, 5n) 123 Xe reaction at a beam energy of 207 MeV. γ-ray coincidence events were recorded with the Gammasphere spectrometer. Four new high-spin bands have been discovered in this nucleus. The bands are compared with those calculated within the framework of cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky and cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky-Bogoliubov models. Furthermore, it is concluded that the configurations of the bands involve two-proton excitations across the Z = 50 as well as excitation of neutrons across the N = 82 shell gaps resulting in a large deformation, ε 2 ≈ 0.30 and γ ≈ 5°.

Coriolis coupling effects in proton-pickup spectroscopic factors from 12 B

Spectroscopic factors to low-lying negative-parity states in Be 11 extracted from the B 12 ( d , He 3 ) Be 11 proton-removal reaction are interpreted within the rotational model. Earlier predictions of the p -wave proton-removal strengths in the strong-coupling limit of the Nilsson model underestimated the spectroscopic factors to the 3 / 2 1 - and 5 / 2 1 - states and suggested that deviations in the 1 + ground state of the odd-odd B 12 due to Coriolis coupling should be further explored. Furthermore, in this work we use the particle rotor model to take into account these effects and obtain a good description of the level scheme in B 11 , with a moderate K mixing of the proton Nilsson levels [110]1/2 and [101]3/2. This mixing, present in the 1 + bandhead of B 12 , is key to explaining the proton-pickup data.
