Fermiology of a topological line-nodal compound CaSb 2 and its implication to superconductivity: Angle-resolved photoemission study

Here, we performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with microfocused beam on a topological line-nodal compound CaSb 2 which undergoes a superconducting transition at the onset T c ~ 1.8 K, to clarify the Fermi-surface topology relevant to the occurrence of superconductivity. We found that a three-dimensional hole pocket at the Γ point is commonly seen for two types of single-crystalline samples fabricated by different growth conditions. On the other hand, the carrier-doping level estimated from the position of the chemical potential was found to be sensitive to the sample fabrication condition. The cylindrical electron pocket at the Y(C) point predicted by the calculations is absent in one of the two samples, despite the fact that both samples commonly show superconductivity with similar T c 's. This suggests a key role of the three-dimensional hole pocket to the occurrence of superconductivity, and further points to an intriguing possibility to control the topological nature of superconductivity by carrier tuning in CaSb 2 .

Topological features in the ferromagnetic Weyl semimetal CeAlSi: Role of domain walls

In the ferromagnetic (FM) Weyl semimetal CeAlSi both space-inversion and time-reversal symmetries are broken. Our quantum oscillation (QO) data indicate that the FM ordering modifies the Fermi-surface topology and also leads to an unusual drop in the QO amplitude. In the FM phase, we find a pressure-induced suppression of the anomalous and the loop Hall effects. This cannot be explained based on the electronic band structure or magnetic structure, both of which are nearly pressure independent. Instead, we show that a simplified model describing the scattering of Weyl fermions off FM domain walls can potentially explain the observed topological features. Our study highlights the importance of domain walls for understanding transport in FM Weyl semimetals.

Quantum oscillations and transport properties of layered single-crystal SrCu 4 ⁢As 2

Here, we report a systematic investigation of the physical properties and Fermi-surface topology of layered single-crystal SrCu 4⁢ As 2 using electrical transport, magnetotransport, and quantum-oscillation experiments plus band-structure calculations. The temperature-dependent electrical resistivity reveals a hysteretic phase transition at 𝑇 𝑃 =59 K, most likely associated with a structural change. Hall resistivity data suggest a marked change in the average hole density resulting from the latter phase transition near 𝑇 𝑃 . A large, linear, and nonsaturating magnetoresistance is observed at low temperatures in SrCu 4 ⁢As 2 , likely attributable to the multipocket Fermi surface. Quantum-oscillation data measured in magnetic fields of up to 60 T show several oscillation frequencies exhibiting low effective masses, indicating the presence of Dirac-like band dispersion in SrCu 4 ⁢As 2 , as suggested by the band structure calculations.

Anomalous Hall effects in chiral superconductors

We report theoretical results for the electronic contribution to thermal and electrical transport for chiral superconductors belonging to even or odd-parity E 1 and E 2 representations of the tetragonal and hexagonal point groups. Chiral superconductors exhibit novel properties that depend on the topology of the order parameter and Fermi surface, and—as we highlight—the structure of the impurity potential. An anomalous thermal Hall effect is predicted and shown to be sensitive to the winding number, ν, of the chiral order parameter via Andreev scattering that transfers angular momentum from the chiral condensate to excitations that scatter off the random potential. For heat transport in a chiral superconductor with isotropic impurity scattering, i.e., point-like impurities, a transverse heat current is obtained for ν = ± 1, but vanishes for | ν | > 1. This is not a universal result. For finite-size impurities with radii of order or greater than the Fermi wavelength, R ≥ ℏ / p f, the thermal Hall conductivity is finite for chiral order with | ν | ≥ 2, and determined by a specific Fermi-surface average of the differential cross-section for electron-impurity scattering. Our results also provide quantitative formulae for analyzing and interpreting thermal transport measurements for superconductors predicted to exhibit broken time-reversal and mirror symmetries.

Ground-state energies of simple metals

A structural expansion for the static ground-state energy of a simple metal is derived. Two methods are presented, one an approach based on single-particle band structure which treats the electron gas as a nonlinear dielectric, the other a more general many-particle analysis using finite-temperature perturbation theory. The two methods are compared, and it is shown in detail how band-structure effects, Fermi-surface distortions, and chemical-potential shifts affect the total energy. These are of special interest in corrections to the total energy beyond third order in the electron-ion interaction and hence to systems where differences in energies for various crystal structures are exceptionally small. Preliminary calculations using these methods for the zero-temperature thermodynamic functions of atomic hydrogen are reported.

Aluminum under high pressure. I - Equation of state

A curve of applied pressure versus lattice constant is calculated for single-crystal aluminum. It results from an application of the method of structural expansions for deriving the energies of simple metals, a method known to give reasonable results for the elastic constants even at second order in the effective electron-ion interaction. The latter is taken from Fermi-surface analysis, and it is verified that the extant face-centered cubic structure remains the preferred crystalline phase up to the highest pressures considered. Arguments are given to suggest that the curve should have reasonable a priori accuracy and can admit possible improvement if experimental data in the intermediate-pressure region can be provided to refine the (in principle) energy-dependent pseudopotential. At three megabars, the lattice constant is reduced by only 22 per cent; the ion cores at this pressure are still very well separated.

Electronic properties of PbMo6S8 and CuxMo6S8

Normal-state properties of sputtered, evaporated, and sintered PbMo6S8 and CuxMo6S8 (where x is between 1.6 and 2.5) samples are reported. These include the temperature dependence of resistivity, magnetoresistance, and Hall effect. When combined with superconducting properties (measured on the same samples) and theory, a number of Fermi-surface and superconducting parameters are derived. Fits to the temperature dependence of the resistivity are compared with similar fits for A-15 structure superconductors.

Thermoelectric properties of strongly correlated compounds AnPd3 (An = Pu, Np)

We present, for the first time, the thermoelectric properties of NpPd3 and PuPd3 compounds. We show that the Seebeck coefficient of these materials is enhanced and its magnitude and temperature dependence are characteristic of dense Kondo systems in which 5f -states are present in the vicinity of the Fermi level. The electrical resistivity also shows characteristic behavior of Kondo lattices in these materials. For cubic NpPd3 a sharp transition in electrical resistivity and thermopower together with a change of sign of S (T) at the Néel temperature, indicate a first order nature of the magnetic transition. This transition is probably accompanied by a large Fermi-surface reconstruction. Further studies, however, are required to better understand the electronic structure of cubic NpPd3 and other AnPd3 phases. We have also estimated power factor (S^2/rho) of the samples studied. We find out that it is relatively high although much smaller than observed in rare-earth-based REPd3 phases, especially CePd3.

PyProcar: A Python library for electronic structure pre/post-processing

The PyProcar Python package plots the band structure and the Fermi surface as a function of site and/or s,p,d,f - projected wavefunctions obtained for each k-point in the Brillouin zone and band in an electronic structure calculation. This can be performed on top of any electronic structure code, as long as the band and projection information is written in the PROCAR format, as done by the VASP and ABINIT codes. PyProcar can be easily modified to read other formats as well. This package is particularly suitable for understanding atomic effects into the band structure, Fermi surface, spin texture, etc. PyProcar can be conveniently used in a command line mode, where each one of the parameters define a plot property. In the case of Fermi surfaces, the package is able to plot the surface with colors depending on other properties such as the electron velocity or spin projection. Furthermore, the mesh used to calculate the property does not need to be the same as the one used to obtain the Fermi surface. A file with a specific property evaluated for each k-point in a k-mesh and for each band can be used to project other properties such as electron–phonon mean path, Fermi velocity, electron effective mass, etc. Another existing feature refers to the band unfolding of supercell calculations into predefined unit cells.
