Flat Bands in Magic-Angle Bilayer Photonic Crystals at Small Twists

The new physics of magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) motivated extensive studies of flat bands hosted by moiré superlattices in van der Waals structures, inspiring the investigations into their photonic counterparts with potential applications including Bose-Einstein condensation. However, correlation between photonic flat bands and bilayer photonic moiré systems remains unexplored, impeding further development of moiré photonics. In this work, we formulate a coupled-mode theory for low-angle twisted bilayer honeycomb photonic crystals as a close analogy of TBG, discovering magic-angle photonic flat bands with a non-Anderson-type localization. Moreover, the interlayer separation constitutes a convenient degree of freedom in tuning photonic moiré bands without high pressure. Furthermore, a phase diagram is constructed to correlate the twist angle and separation dependencies to the photonic magic angles. Our findings reveal a salient correspondence between fermionic and bosonic moiré systems and pave the avenue toward novel applications through advanced photonic band or state engineering.

Dirac Fermions and Flat Bands in Phosphorus Carbide Nanotubes: Structural and Quantum Phase Transitions in a Quasi-One-Dimensional Material

Chemically realistic quasi-one-dimensional (1D) materials in which Dirac Fermions and highly degenerate flat bands coexist intrinsically at the Fermi level are exceedingly rare, while representing a highly desirable platform for correlated and topological quantum phenomena. Here, in this work, using specialized symmetry-adapted first-principles calculations we predict a new class of nanomaterials─phosphorus carbide nanotubes (P 2 C 3 NTs)─obtained by rolling monolayer P 2 C 3 , a two-dimensional material shown in a previous letter to host “double Kagome bands”. Both armchair and zigzag P 2 C 3 NTs are stable at room temperature and feature the rare coexistence of Dirac crossings and multiple flat bands at the Fermi level inherited from the underlying honeycomb–Kagome lattice, with the flat bands resilient to elastic deformations. Under large strain, the structure transforms from honeycomb–Kagome to “brick-wall”, accompanied by multiple coupled structural and quantum phase transitions. We also uncover localized edge states, spin splitting from vacancies and dopants, and strain-tunable magnetism. Together, these results establish P 2 C 3 NTs as a chemically specific and mechanically tunable 1D material platform with potential applications in quantum hardware and spintronics.

Electron correlation and incipient flat bands in the Kagome superconductor CsCr 3 Sb 5

Correlated kagome materials exhibit a compelling interplay between lattice geometry, electron correlation, and topology. In particular, the flat bands near the Fermi level provide a fertile playground for novel many-body states. Here we investigate the electronic structure of CsCr 3 Sb 5 using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and ab-initio calculations. Our results suggest that Cr 3d electrons are intrinsically incoherent, showing strong electron correlation amplified by Hund’s coupling. Notably, we identify incipient flat bands close to the Fermi level, which are expected to significantly influence the electronic properties of the system. Across the density-wave-like transition at 55 K, we observe a drastic enhancement of the electron scattering rate, which aligns with the semiconducting-like property at high temperatures. These findings establish CsCr 3 Sb 5 as a strongly correlated Hund’s metal with incipient flat bands near the Fermi level, which provides an electronic basis for understanding its novel properties compared to the weakly correlated AV 3 Sb 5 .

Dirac Fermion Cloning, Moiré Flat Bands, and Magic Lattice Constants in Epitaxial Monolayer Graphene

Tuning interactions between Dirac states in graphene has attracted enormous interest because it can modify the electronic spectrum of the 2D material, enhance electron correlations, and give rise to novel condensed-matter phases such as superconductors, Mott insulators, Wigner crystals, and quantum anomalous Hall insulators. Previous works predominantly focus on the flat band dispersion of coupled Dirac states from different twisted graphene layers. Here in this work, a new route to realizing flat band physics in monolayer graphene under a periodic modulation from substrates is proposed. Graphene/SiC heterostructure is taken as a prototypical example and it is demonstrated experimentally that the substrate modulation leads to Dirac fermion cloning and, consequently, the proximity of the two Dirac cones of monolayer graphene in momentum space. Theoretical modeling captures the cloning mechanism of the Dirac states and indicates that moiré flat bands can emerge at certain magic lattice constants of the substrate, specifically when the period of modulation becomes nearly commensurate with the ($\sqrt{3}$ x $\sqrt{3}$) R30° supercell of graphene. Our results show that epitaxial single monolayer graphene on suitable substrates is a promising platform for exploring exotic many-body quantum phases arising from interactions between Dirac electrons.

Topological protection in a Landau flat band at v = 7/11, a candidate filling factor for unconventional correlations

Strong interactions in Landau flat bands are known to stabilize correlated states that do not form in other types of flat bands. We report hallmarks of topological protection at the Landau level filling factor v = 7/11 in a 2D electron system. The v = 7/11 filling factor is the particle-hole conjugate of v = 4/11, a filling factor intensely studied for the possibility of realizing unconventional electronic correlations. Our data establish a new instance for an unusual fractional quantum Hall state and opens up possibilities for the study of unconventional correlations in an enlarged parameter space. We report and discuss transport signatures developing at other filling factors of interest v = 7/11, 5/8, and 8/13, which however in our sample do not exhibit topological protection.

Floquet topological systems with flat bands: Edge modes, Berry curvature, and orbital magnetization

Results are presented for Floquet systems in two spatial dimensions where the Floquet driving breaks an effective time reversal symmetry. The driving protocol also induces flat bands that correspond to anomalous Floquet phases where the Chern number is zero and yet chiral edge modes exist. Analytic expressions for the edge modes, Berry curvature, and the orbital magnetization are derived for the flat bands. Results are also presented for the static Haldane model for parameters when the bands are flat. Floquet driving of the same model is shown to give rise to Chern insulators as well as anomalous Floquet phases. As a result, the orbital magnetization for these different topological phases are presented and are found to be enhanced at half filling by the broken particle-hole symmetry of the Haldane model.

Accurate tight-binding model for twisted bilayer graphene describes topological flat bands without geometric relaxation

A major hurdle in understanding the phase diagram of twisted bilayer graphene is the roles of lattice relaxation and electronic structure on isolated band flattening near magic twist angles. Here in this work, the authors develop an accurate local environment tight-binding model fit to tight-binding parameters computed from ab initio density-functional theory calculations across many atomic configurations. With the accurate parametrization, it is found that the magic angle shifts to slightly lower angles than often quoted, from around 1.05° to around 0.99°, and that isolated flat bands appear for rigidly rotated graphene layers, with enhancement of the flat bands when the layers are allowed to distort. Study of the orbital localization supports the emergence of fragile topology in the isolated flat bands without the need for lattice relaxation.

Electron doping of a double-perovskite flat-band system

Electronic structure calculations indicate that the Sr 2 FeSbO 6 double perovskite has a flat-band set just above the Fermi level that includes contributions from ordinary subbands with weak kinetic electron hopping plus a flat subband that can be attributed to the lattice geometry and orbital interference. To place the Fermi energy in that flat band, electron-doped samples with formulas Sr 2- x La x FeSbO 6 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.3) were synthesized, and their magnetism and ambient temperature crystal structures were determined by high-resolution synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction. All materials appear to display an antiferromagnetic-like maximum in the magnetic susceptibility, but the dominant spin coupling evolves from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic on electron doping. Which of the three subbands or combinations is responsible for the behavior has not been determined.

Emergent flat band and topological Kondo semimetal driven by orbital-selective correlations

Flat electronic bands are expected to show proportionally enhanced electron correlations, which may generate a plethora of novel quantum phases and unusual low-energy excitations. They are increasingly being pursued in d-electron-based systems with crystalline lattices that feature destructive electronic interference, where they are often topological. Such flat bands, though, are generically located far away from the Fermi energy, which limits their capacity to partake in the low-energy physics. Here we show that electron correlations produce emergent flat bands that are pinned to the Fermi energy. We demonstrate this effect within a Hubbard model, in the regime described by Wannier orbitals where an effective Kondo description arises through orbital-selective Mott correlations. Moreover, the correlation effect cooperates with symmetry constraints to produce a topological Kondo semimetal. Our results motivate a novel design principle for Weyl Kondo semimetals in a new setting, viz.d-electron-based materials on suitable crystal lattices, and uncover interconnections among seemingly disparate systems that may inspire fresh understandings and realizations of correlated topological effects in quantum materials and beyond.

Flat band driven itinerant magnetism in the Co-pnictides CaCo 2⁢ As 2 and LaCo 2 ⁢P 2

Flat bands can induce strong electron correlation effects that help stabilize both magnetic and superconducting states. Here, in this study, we carry out angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations to study the electronic structure of the Co-pnictides CaCo 2 ⁢As 2 and LaCo 2 ⁢P 2 . We find that the 𝑘 𝑧 Fermi topology of ferromagnetic LaCo 2 ⁢P 2 is markedly two-dimensional, while the antiferromagnetic CaCo 2 ⁢As 2 develops a 3D Fermi surface described by a zigzaglike band dispersion perpendicular to the Co-As plane. Furthermore, the magnetism is driven by the electronic correlations of the flat bands with 𝑑 𝑥⁢𝑦 and 𝑑 𝑧 2 orbital character at the Fermi level. Our results link the electronic dimensionality and the magnetic order and emphasize the critical role of the As-As and P-P bond strength along the 𝑐 direction to understand the electronic band structure and the rich phase diagram of transition metal pnictides.

Tunable angle-dependent electrochemistry at twisted bilayer graphene with moiré flat bands

Tailoring electron transfer dynamics across solid–liquid interfaces is fundamental to the interconversion of electrical and chemical energy. Stacking atomically thin layers with a small azimuthal misorientation to produce moiré superlattices enables the controlled engineering of electronic band structures and the formation of extremely flat electronic bands. Here, we report a strong twist-angle dependence of heterogeneous charge transfer kinetics at twisted bilayer graphene electrodes with the greatest enhancement observed near the ‘magic angle’ (~1.1°). Furthermore, this effect is driven by the angle-dependent tuning of moiré-derived flat bands that modulate electron transfer processes with the solution-phase redox couple. Combined experimental and computational analysis reveals that the variation in electrochemical activity with moiré angle is controlled by a structural relaxation of the moiré superlattice at twist angles of <2°, and ‘topological defect’ AA stacking regions, where flat bands are localized, produce a large anomalous local electrochemical enhancement that cannot be accounted for by the elevated local density of states alone.

Optical imaging of flavor order in flat band graphene

Abstract Spin- and valley flavor polarization plays a central role in the many-body physics of flat band graphene, with Fermi surface reconstruction — often accompanied by quantized anomalous Hall and superconducting state — observed in a variety of experimental systems. Here we describe an optical technique that sensitively and selectively detects flavor textures via the exciton response of a proximal transition metal dichalcogenide layer. Through a systematic study of rhombohedral and rotationally faulted graphene bilayers and trilayers, we show that when the semiconducting dichalcogenide is in direct contact with the graphene, the exciton response is most sensitive to the large momentum rearrangement of the Fermi surface, providing information that is distinct from and complementary to electrical compressibility measurements. The wide-field imaging capability of optical probes allows us to obtain spatial maps of flavor order with high throughput, and with broad temperature and device compatibility. Our work helps pave the way for optical probing and imaging of flavor orders in flat band graphene systems.

Flat-band topology of magic angle graphene on a transition metal dichalcogenide

In this work, we consider twisted bilayer graphene on a transition metal dichalcogenide substrate, where proximity-induced spin-orbit coupling significantly alters the eight flat bands which occur near the magic angle. The resulting band structure features a pair of extremely flat bands across most of the mini-Brillouin zone. Further details depend sensitively on the symmetries of the heterostructure; we find semiconducting band structures when all twofold rotations around the in-plane axis are broken, and semimetallic band structures otherwise. We calculate the Chern numbers of the different isolated bands, and identify the parameter regimes and filling factors where valley Chern insulators and topological insulators are realized. Interestingly, we find that for realistic values of the proximity-induced terms, it is possible to realize a topological insulator protected by time-reversal symmetry by doping two holes or two electrons per superlattice unit cell into the system.

Chiral limit and origin of topological flat bands in twisted transition metal dichalcogenide homobilayers

Abstract The observation of zero field fractional quantum Hall analogs in twisted transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) asks for a deeper understanding of what mechanisms lead to topological flat bands in two-dimensional heterostructures, and what makes TMDs an excellent platform for topologically ordered phases, surpassing twisted bilayer graphene. To this aim, we explore the chiral limits of massive Dirac theories applicable toC 3 -symmetric moiré materials, and show their relevance for both bilayer graphene and TMD homobilayers. In the latter, the Berry curvature of valence bands leads to relativistic corrections of the moiré potential that promote band flattening, and permit a limit with exactly flat bands with nonzero Chern number. The relativistic corrections enter as alayer-orbit coupling, analogous to spin-orbit coupling for relativistic Dirac fermions, which we show is non-negligible on the moiré scale. The Berry curvature of the TMD monolayers therefore plays an essential role in the flattening of moiré Chern bands in these heterostructures.

Orbital Chern Insulator and Quantum Phase Diagram of a Kagome Electron System with Half-Filled Flat Bands

In this work, we study the quantum phase diagram of electrons on kagome lattice with half-filled lowest flat bands by considering the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg interaction J, and short-range Coulomb interaction V. In the weak J regime, we identify a fully spin-polarized phase. The presence of finite V drives a spontaneous chiral current, which makes the system an orbital Chern insulator by contributing an orbital magnetization. Such an out-of-plane orbital magnetization allows the presence of a Chern insulating phase independent of the spin orientation in contrast to the spin-orbit coupling induced Chern insulator that disappears with inplane ferromagnetism constrained by symmetry. Such a symmetry difference provides a criterion to distinguish the physical origin of topological responses in kagome systems. The orbital Chern insulator is robust against small coupling J. By further increasing J, we find that the ferromagnetic topological phase is suppressed, which first becomes partially polarized and then enters a nonmagnetic phase with spin and charge nematicity. The frustrated flat band allows the spin and Coulomb interaction to play an essential role in determining the quantum phases.

Tuning the flat bands of the kagome metal CoSn with Fe, In, or Ni doping

We report CoSn is a Pauli paramagnet with relatively flat d bands centered about 100 meV below the Fermi energy, E F . Single crystals of CoSn lightly doped with Fe, In, or Ni are investigated using x-ray and neutron scattering, magnetic susceptibility and magnetization, AC susceptibility, specific heat, and resistivity measurements. Within the rigid-band approximation, hole doping with a few percent of Fe or In should move the flat bands closer to E F , whereas electron doping with Ni should move the flat bands further away from E F . We provide evidence that this indeed occurs. Fe and In doping drive CoSn toward magnetism, while Ni doping suppresses CoSn's already weak magnetic response. The resulting ground state is different for Fe versus In doping. For Fe-doped crystals, Co 1-x Fe x Sn, with 0.02< x <0.27, the magnetic and specific-heat data are consistent with the formation of a spin glass, with a glass temperature, T g , ranging from 1 K for x = 0.02 to 10 K for x = 0.27. Powder and single-crystal neutron diffraction found no evidence of long-range magnetic order below T g for samples with x ≈ 0.17. For In-doped crystals, CoSn 1-y In y , both the magnetic susceptibility and the Sommerfeld coefficient, γ, increase substantially relative to pure CoSn, but with no clear indication of a magnetic transition for 0.05< y <0.2. CoSn crystals doped with Ni (Co 0.93 Ni 0.07 Sn) have a significantly smaller magnetic susceptibility and γ than pure CoSn, consistent with flat bands further from E F .

Multiple flat bands and topological Hofstadter butterfly in twisted bilayer graphene close to the second magic angle

Significance Multiple flat bands in high-quality twisted bilayer graphene close to the theoretically predicted second magic angle are observed. These well-isolated flat moiré bands host a nontrivial topology which is evidenced by a connecting multiband Hofstadter butterfly spectrum. This work provides a perspective for understanding the emergent quantum phases (i.e., strong correlation and band topology) in twisted bilayer graphene and the fractal Hofstadter spectra of multiple topological bands.

Time-reversal invariant topological moiré flat band: A platform for the fractional quantum spin Hall effect

Motivated by recent observation of the quantum spin Hall effect in monolayer germanene and twisted bilayer transition-metal-dichalcogenides (TMDs), we study the topological phases of moir twisted bilayers with time-reversal symmetry and spin sz conservation. By using a continuum model description which can be applied to both germanene and TMD bilayers, we show that at small twist angles the emergent moir flat bands can be topologically nontrivial due to inversion symmetry breaking. Each of these flat bands admits a lowest-Landau-level description for each spin projection in the chiral limit and at magic twist angle. Furthermore, this allows for the construction of a many-body Laughlin state with time-reversal symmetry which can be stabilized by a short-range pseudopotential, and therefore serves as an ideal platform for realizing the so-far elusive fractional quantum spin Hall effect with emergent spin-1/2 U(1) symmetry.
