Hydrocarboxylation of C=C Bonds in Polycyclooctene: Progress Toward Valorization of Waste Polyolefins

Upcycling of waste polyolefins into higher-value functional polymers through chemical functionalization is a promising strategy to recover value and minimize their environmental impact. We report the hydrocarboxylation of polycyclooctene as a model for accessing ethylene acrylic acid copolymers (EAA) from waste polyethylene. The effects of various process parameters on the hydrocarboxylation were investigated. The relationship between carboxylic acid concentration and material properties, including crystallinity, melting temperature, glass transition temperature, adhesive properties, and wettability, was studied in comparison to an unfunctionalized polyethylene. Among the catalysts evaluated, Co 2 (CO) 8 exhibited relatively slow kinetics toward the hydrocarboxylation and was not compatible with 2,6-di-tert-butyl hydroxytoluene, a common additive present in commercial polyolefins. PdCl 2 (PPh 3 ) 2 exhibited a higher reactivity toward the hydrocarboxylation, though polymer gelation was observed with extended reaction times or high catalyst loadings. Carboxylic acid incorporation into the polymer was readily controlled by varying the reaction time. Altogether, the resultant COOH-functionalized polyolefins possessed properties analogous to commercial EAA.

Liquid bicontinuous stabilized assemblies by interfacial jamming of nanoparticles

A method for preparing a stabilized assembly includes combining a first liquid phase including nanoparticles and a second, immiscible liquid phase, dissolving in the second phase a first end-functionalized polymer having a first molecular weight, and a second end-functionalized polymer having a second molecular weight, wherein the second molecular weight is greater than the first molecular weight, applying a shearing external deformation field to increase the surface area of the first phase to create a new interface, wherein the nanoparticle surfactants form a disordered, jammed assembly at the new interface, and releasing the shearing external deformation field. The polymer and the nanoparticles can interact at an interface through ligand interactions to form nanoparticle surfactants and upon releasing the external deformation field the jammed assembly at the new interface traps the first phase in a deformed state having the first liquid phase and the second liquid phase as interpenetrating domains.

Controlling Ion Uptake in Carboxylated Mixed Conductors

Organic mixed ionic‐electronic conductors (OMIECs) have garnered significant attention due to their capacity to transport both ions and electrons, making them ideal for applications in energy storage, neuromorphics, and bioelectronics. However, charge compensation mechanisms during the polymer redox process remain poorly understood, and are often oversimplified as single‐ion injection with little attention to counterion effects. To advance understanding and design strategies toward next‐generation OMIEC systems, a series of p‐channel carboxylated mixed conductors is investigated. Varying side‐chain functionality, distinctive swelling character is uncovered during electrochemical doping/dedoping with model chao‐/kosmotropic electrolytes. Carboxylic acid functionalized polymers demonstrate strong deswelling and mass reduction during doping, indicating cation expulsion, while ethoxycarbonyl counterparts exhibit prominent mass increase, pointing to an anion‐driven doping mechanism. By employing operando grazing incidence X‐ray fluorescence (GIXRF), it is revealed that the carboxyl functionalized polymer engages in robust cation interaction, whereas ester functionalization shifts the mechanism towards no cation involvement. It is demonstrated that cations are pivotal in mitigating swelling by counterbalancing anions, enabling efficient anion uptake without compromising performance. These findings underscore the transformative influence of functionality‐driven factors and side‐chain chemistry in governing ion dynamics and conduction, providing new frameworks for designing OMIECs with enhanced performance and reduced swelling.

Oligoether-Functionalized PEDOT: Combining an EDOT Backbone with Polar Side Chains for Solution Processability and High Electrical Conductivity

Conjugated polymers functionalized with oligoether (OE)-based side chains are a key class of materials for various organic electronic applications, including transparent electrodes, thermoelectrics, electrochromic displays, and electrochemical transistors. Herein, we report a highly soluble OE-functionalized poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) homopolymer, prepared by direct (hetero)arylation polymerization, which allows solution processing to yield films with comparable redox properties to oxidatively polymerized PEDOT. This polymer, PEDOT(OE3), when optimally oxidatively doped, reaches among the highest electrical conductivities of any OE-functionalized polymer and is comparable to more synthetically complex OE-functionalized polymers. X-ray scattering and spectroscopy were utilized to rationalize the transport properties resulting from varying the doping level. Comparison of PEDOT(OE3) to a series of OE-functionalized dioxythiophenes with varying amounts of 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene units allows for a deeper understanding of structure–property relationships through charge-transport models. Ultimately, PEDOT(OE3) is shown to be a material with exceptional charge-transport properties and is promising for various applications.

Polymer Zwitterions for Stabilization of CsPbBr 3 Perovskite Nanoparticles and Nanocomposite Films

Functional polymers with sulfobetaine or phosphorylcholine zwitterions as pendent groups are demonstrated as both ligands and host matrices for CsPbBr 3 perovskite nanoparticles (PNPs). These polymers produce nanocomposite films with excellent NP dispersion, optical transparency, and impressive resistance to NP degradation upon exposure to water. Multidentate interactions of the zwitterion-containing copolymers with the PNPs induce dispersed or weakly aggregated nanocomposite morphologies, depending on the extent of zwitterionic functionality in the polymer. Incorporating additional functionality into the polymers, such as benzophenone pendent groups, yields lithographically patternable films, while time-resolved photoluminescence measurements provide insight into the electronic impact of PNPs in zwitterionic polymer matrices.

Grafting-To and From for Multiplexed Chemical-Warfare-Agent Responsive Polymer Brushes

Surface-tethered polymers have important applications in functional polymer coatings, particularly for the development of chemically responsive surfaces. Here, we combined the traditional grafting-to and grafting-from methods to create a new surface grafting strategy, termed grafting-to and from, using surface-initiated ring-opening metathesis polymerization (SI-ROMP). In this method, poly(pentafluorophenyl methacrylate) is grafted to an amine terminated surface. Surplus reactive esters after reaction with surface amines render this polymer a connecting or tie layer that can be further reacted to provide dense ROMP initiation sites. This amplification of grafting sites results in thick and environmentally stable polymer brushes upon SI-ROMP. With the goal of developing polymer-grafted breathable membranes that autonomously react to multiple chemical warfare agents (CWAs), we demonstrate the benefit of this method by employing amine reactive monomers in the grafting-from step. This enables diverse postsynthetic functionalization for the facile screening of chemical motifs to enhance response capabilities to mustard blister agents. Surface-tethered triarylmethanol-containing polymers with four distinct functional groups are prepared and challenged with the vapor of 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (CEES), a simulant of mustard agent, in humid air. Importantly, hydroxyl groups effectively improve CWA response and the resulting polymer brushes show chain collapse after both CEES and diethylchlorophosphate (DCP) treatment. Our results illustrate that the grafting-to and from method can be used to grow functional and robust polymer coatings for various applications.

Functionalized Porous Polymer Networks as High-Performance PFAS Adsorbents

Toxic per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are now found in nearly every water source on the planet. Exposure to these molecules can have negative health consequences, but the low concentration of PFAS relative to other solutes in water makes their removal challenging. Adsorbents offer a promising treatment route, but often exhibit low selectivities and removal capacities, as well as slow kinetics. The performance in these metrics can be improved by chemically optimizing PFAS binding sites and maximizing PFAS-adsorbent interactions. To explore how to achieve this, a porous polymer network solid (PPN-6, also known as PAF-1) was postsynthetically modified with various chemical moieties capable of leveraging unique combinations of electrostatic, hydrogen-bonding, hydrophobic, and fluorophilic interactions with PFAS molecules. Batch adsorption experiments and computational studies revealed that electrostatic and hydrogen-bonding interactions drive short-chain PFAS adsorption, while hydrophobic and fluorophilic interactions improve long-chain PFAS adsorption. In complex water matrices, a combination of electrostatic and fluorophilic interactions led to the greatest total PFAS removal. The best-performing material, functionalized with a fluorinated alkylammonium (PPN-6-FNDMB), selectively adsorbs PFAS with high capacity (up to 4.0 mmol/g) and rapid kinetics (equilibrium reached in <30 s). Furthermore, PPN-6-FNDMB outperforms several commercial adsorbents, achieving near-complete removal of 21 different PFAS from a groundwater sample collected at a US Air Force base. The PFAS could subsequently be desorbed from PPN-6-FNDMB, concentrating them by a factor of over 50 times. The recycled PPN-6-FNDMB could then be reused with minimal losses in long-chain PFAS adsorption capacity over four cycles.

Design of a multi-functional gel polymer electrolyte with a 3D compact stacked polymer micro-sphere matrix for high-performance lithium metal batteries

We report lithium metal batteries (LMBs) are considered as promising high energy density batteries. However, they still suffer from poor cyclability due to the instability of solid electrolyte interphases (SEIs) and Li dendrite issues. Herein, a novel 3D densely packed multifunctional crosslinked gel polymer electrolyte (PHGPE) has been synthesized by in situ copolymerization of pentaerythritol tetraacrylate and 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate in a liquid electrolyte via a thermal initiation method. Due to intermolecular hydrogen bonding in the frameworks, the PHGPE exhibits a 3D compact-stacked and crosslinked micro-sphere structure, which benefits the construction of homogeneous Li + flux, enabling uniform Li plating/stripping and formation of robust SEIs onto the lithium electrode. Benefiting from the above advantages, symmetric Li cells in the PHGPE deliver excellent cyclabilities of 6000 h at a current density of 1 mA cm -2 (1 mA h cm -2 ) and 7700 h at 0.5 mA cm -2 (2 mA h cm -2 ). Moreover, the PHGPE has such a wide electrochemical window that it is compatible with both high-voltage LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 and sulfur cathodes to realize long cycle life. Additionally, a LiFePO 4 based pouch size LMB also presents promising performance. Therefore, this study of the PHGPE has opened a new avenue for high-performance LMBs with excellent versatility and practicality.

Functional enzyme–polymer complexes

Significance The use of biological enzyme catalysts could have huge ramifications for chemical industries. However, these enzymes are often inactive in nonbiological conditions, such as high temperatures, present in industrial settings. Here, we show that the enzyme PETase (polyethylene terephthalate [PET]), with potential application in plastic recycling, is stabilized at elevated temperature through complexation with random copolymers. We demonstrate this through simulations and experiments on different types of substrates. Our simulations also provide strategies for designing more enzymatically active complexes by altering polymer composition and enzyme charge distribution.

The Role of Functionalized Conducting Polymer Binders in Improving Power Density and Cycle Life of Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Lithium-Sulfur batteries are promising as the next-generation of low-cost, high-energy rechargeable batteries. However, the commercialization of this battery has been limited by poor rate capability and cycle life. To improve the performance of Li-S cells, we have investigated the role of two n-dopable conducting polymers, N2200 and N2200-OE, as binders for the sulfur cathode. The electron and ion transport properties of these polymer binders, along with their strong affinity for polysulfides, results in significantly enhanced performance compared to cells with the traditional insulating PVDF binder. The role of these conducting polymer binders in enhancing the performance of the cells is analyzed using impedance spectroscopy, shuttle current measurements, conductivity measurements, UV–vis spectroscopy, GIWAXS studies and post-cycling analysis of the anodes. The conducting polymer binders reduce the cell impedance by a factor of four leading to a marked improvement in rate capability. The shuttling of the polysulfides and the formation of insoluble sulfides at the anode is curtailed by the interaction of the polysulfides with the backbone of the polymer binders, leading to an impressive capacity retention of 82% after 500 cycles. These studies demonstrate the benefit of tailored polymer binders at the sulfur electrode in addressing the limitations of lithium-sulfur batteries.

Coupling and Decoupling between Stickers and Backbones in Associating Polymers with Terminally Functionalized Side Chains

Associating polymers have recently attracted tremendous attention as self-healing polymers due to the dynamic reversibility of sticker association–dissociation processes. These sticker dynamics inevitably slow significantly as segmental dynamics decelerate below the glass transition temperature that limits the operational temperatures of associating polymers. Using broadband dielectric spectroscopy on a new set of associating polymers composed side chains of various lengths and terminal carboxylic-acid sticker functionality, we discovered an unexpected decoupling near the glass transition (T g ) between the slower backbone and fast sticker motions. These two motions have distinct activation energies for the motion of the sulfur linkage adjacent to the backbone (~22 to 26 kJ/mol) and the carboxylic acid groups (~5 to 8 kJ/mol). A second decoupling appears in the polymer with the longest side chain length at T g – 20 K, reflecting the dynamics of various carboxylic acid binding configurations. Furthermore, our findings open the door to design associating polymers with the capability of sticker association/dissociation at low temperatures.
