One-loop structure of parton distribution for the gluon condensate and “zero modes”

We present results for one-loop corrections to the recently introduced “gluon condensate” PDF F(x). In particular, we give expression for the gg-part of its evolution kernel. To enforce strict compliance with the gauge invariance requirements, we have used on-shell states for external gluons, and have obtained identical results both in Feynman and light-cone gauges. No “zero mode” δ(x) terms were found for the twist-4 gluon PDF F(x). However a q 2 δ(x) term was found for the ξ = 0 GPD F(x, q 2 ) at nonzero momentum transfer q. Overall, our results do not agree with the original attempt of one-loop calculations of F(x) for gluon states, which sets alarm warning for calculations that use matrix elements with virtual external gluons and for lattice renormalization procedures based on their results.

Higher-order kinematical effects in deeply virtual Compton scattering

We study the deeply virtual Compton scattering cross-section in twist-two generalized parton distribution (GPD) approximation, and show that different choices of light-cone vectors and gauges for the final photon polarization will lead to different higher-order kinematical corrections to the cross-section formula. The choice of light-cone vectors affects kinematic corrections at the twist-three level, accounting for the differences between the cross-section formulas in the literature. On the other hand, kinematical corrections from higher-twist GPDs should eliminate the light-cone dependence at twist three. Those light-cone dependencies are studied systematically at JLab 12 GeV and future EIC kinematics. They serve as the intrinsic systematic uncertainties in extracting the Compton form factors through the cross-section formula. More importantly, they are also necessary for understanding cross-section measurements with higher-twist precision and to reconstruct higher-order Compton form factors.

Design, construction, and test of the Gas Pixel Detectors for the IXPE mission

Due to be launched in late 2021, the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) is a NASA Small Explorer mission designed to perform polarization measurements in the 2–8 keV band, complemented with imaging, spectroscopy and timing capabilities. At the heart of the focal plane is a set of three polarization-sensitive Gas Pixel Detectors (GPD), each based on a custom ASIC acting as a charge-collecting anode. In this paper we shall review the design, manufacturing, and test of the IXPE focal-plane detectors, with particular emphasis on the connection between the science drivers, the performance metrics and the operational aspects. We shall present a thorough characterization of the GPDs in terms of effective noise, trigger efficiency, dead time, uniformity of response, and spectral and polarimetric performance. In addition, we shall discuss in detail a number of instrumental effects that are relevant for high-level science analysis—particularly as far as the response to unpolarized radiation and the stability in time are concerned.

Beam Spin Asymmetry Measurements of Deeply Virtual $π$ 0 Production with CLAS12

The new experimental measurements of beam spin asymmetry were performed for the deeply virtual exclusive $π$ 0 production in a wide kinematic region with the photon virtualities $Q$ 2 up to 8 GeV 2 and the Bjorken scaling variable $x$ $B$ in the valence regime. The data were collected by the CE BAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS12) at Jefferson Lab with longitudinally polarized 10.6 GeV electrons scattered on an unpolarized liquid-hydrogen target. Sizable asymmetry values indicate a substantial contribution from transverse virtual photon amplitudes to the polarized structure functions. The interpretation of these measurements in terms of the Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) demonstrates their sensitivity to the chiral-odd GPD $\overline{E}$ $T$ , which contains information on quark transverse spin densities in unpolarized and polarized nucleons and provides access to the proton’s transverse anomalous magnetic moment. Additionally, the data were compared to a theoretical model based on a Regge formalism that was extended to the high photon virtualities.

Probing hard/soft factorization via beam-spin asymmetry in exclusive pion electroproduction from the proton

Deep exclusive meson production (DEMP) reactions, such as $p(\vec{e}, e' π^+)n$, provide opportunities to study the three-dimensional structure of the nucleon through differential cross section and beam- and target-spin asymmetry measurements. This work aims to probe the onset of the hard/soft factorization regime through the exclusive $p(\vec{e}, e' π^+)n$ reaction, as measured in the KaonLT experiment at Jefferson Lab Hall C. A 10.6 GeV longitudinally polarized electron beam was incident on an unpolarized liquid hydrogen target, and the scattered electron and produced meson were detected in two magnetic focusing spectrometers, enabling precision cross section measurements. The cross section ratio $σ_{LT'}/σ_0$ was extracted from the beam-spin asymmetry $A_{LU}$. The t -dependence of $σ_{LT'}/σ_0$ was determined at fixed $Q^2$ and $x_B$ over a range of kinematics from 2 < $Q^2$ < 6 GeV$^2$ above the resonance region ($W$ > 2 GeV). Furthermore, these data are combined with recent results from CLAS/CLAS12 to determine the $Q^2$-dependence of at two $(x_B, t)$ settings. This was fairly flat, with $Q^2$ not having a measurable effect on the value of in the range explored. Results are compared to predictions from the generalized parton distribution (GPD) formalism, which relies explicitly on hard/soft factorization, and Regge formalism. The Regge models better predict $σ_{LT'}/σ_0$, which suggests that the factorization regime is not yet reached.

A highly efficient atomically thin curved PdIr bimetallene electrocatalyst

Abstract The multi-metallene with an ultrahigh surface area has great potential in precise tuning of surface heterogeneous d-electronic correlation by surface strain effect for the distinctive surface electronic structure, which is a brand new class of promising 2D electrocatalyst for sustainable energy device application. However, achieving such an atomically thin multi-metallene still presents a great challenge. Herein, we present a new synthetic method for an atomic-level palladium-iridium (PdIr) bimetallene with an average thickness of only ∼1.0 nm for achieving superior catalysis in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the formic acid oxidation reaction (FAOR). The curved PdIr bimetallene presents a top-ranked high electrochemical active area of 127.5 ± 10.8 m2 gPd+Ir−1 in the reported noble alloy materials, and exhibits a very low overpotential, ultrahigh activity and improved stability for HER and FAOR. DFT calculation reveals that the PdIr bimetallene herein has a unique lattice tangential strain, which can induce surface distortion while concurrently creating a variety of concave-convex featured micro-active regions formed by variously coordinated Pd sites agglomeration. Such a strong strain effect correlates the abnormal on-site active 4d10-t2g-orbital Coulomb correlation potential and directly elevates orbital-electronegativity exposure within these active regions, resulting in a preeminent barrier-free energetic path for significant enhancement of FAOR and HER catalytic performance.

Rapidity-dependent spin decomposition of the nucleon

We revisit the two-dimensional Fourier transform of generalized parton distributions (GPDs) at nonzero skewness. At 𝜂 = 0 it reduces to the standard impact-parameter density, while at 𝜂 ≠ 0 it is an off-forward amplitude that we interpret as a genuine parton–nucleon correlation. Its overall strength (the transverse-plane integral of the density) is fixed by the GPD at the kinematic point 𝑡 =−𝑐 𝜂 =−4⁢𝜂 2 ⁢𝑚$^{2}_{𝑁}$/(1 − 𝜂 2 ) and decreases monotonically with the rapidity gap Δ⁢𝑦 = ln⁡[(1+𝜂)/(1−𝜂)] = 2 artanh⁡(𝜂). This rapidity dependence implies rapidity-modified Ji identities that connect helicity, orbital, and total angular momenta of the correlation in closed form. To quantify these effects, we construct leading-twist quark and gluon GPDs in a string-based conformal framework: conformal moments are parametrized by linear open- and closed-string Regge trajectories with slopes constrained by parton distribution functions (PDFs), hadron/glueball spectroscopy, and form-factor data, and GPDs are reconstructed over the full (𝑥,𝜂,𝑡) domain by Mellin-Barnes inversion with next-to-leading order evolution. We find qualitative agreement (and fair quantitative agreement within quoted uncertainties) for several moments and selected nonsinglet 𝑥-space channels at 𝜇 = 2 GeV when compared with lattice QCD, while we also identify channels with visible tension and discuss likely sources (PDF priors and 𝑡-slope systematics).

Measurement of the J/ψ photoproduction cross section over the full near-threshold kinematic region

Here, we report the total and differential cross sections for $J/\psi$ photoproduction with the large acceptance GlueX spectrometer for photon beam energies from the threshold at 8.2 GeV up to 11.44 GeV and over the full kinematic range of momentum transfer squared, $t$. Such coverage facilitates the extrapolation of the differential cross sections to the forward ($t = 0$) point beyond the physical region. The forward cross section is used by many theoretical models and plays an important role in understanding $J/\psi$ photoproduction and its relation to the $J/\psi$-proton interaction. These measurements of $J/\psi$ photoproduction near threshold are also crucial inputs to theoretical models that are used to study important aspects of the gluon structure of the proton, such as the gluon Generalized Parton Distribution (GPD) of the proton, the mass radius of the proton, and the trace anomaly contribution to the proton mass. We observe possible structures in the total cross section energy dependence and find evidence for contributions beyond gluon exchange in the differential cross section close to threshold, both of which are consistent with contributions from open-charm intermediate states.

Massless and massive photons within basis light-front quantization

We compute the structure function, transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs), and generalized parton distributions (GPDs) for the photon from the light-front quantum electrodynamics (QED) Hamiltonian, determined for its constituent bare photon and electron-positron Fock components within the basis light-front quantization framework. While the structure function and GPDs align well with expectations, some oscillatory behavior in the TMDs emerges as a finite-basis artifact. We also compute the GPD and the corresponding structure function for the longitudinal polarization mode of the massive photon. We further study the photon mass dependence of the calculated observables. After performing nonperturbative renormalization, we obtain a good quality description of the perturbative QED properties of the photon, as well as good agreement with the experimental data for the massless photon’s structure function.

Proton’s gluon GPDs at large skewness and gravitational form factors from near threshold heavy quarkonium photoproduction

We study the exclusive near threshold photoproduction of heavy quarkonium in the framework of the generalized parton distribution (GPD) factorization, taking the 𝐽/𝜓 production as an example. Because of the threshold kinematics, the Compton-like amplitudes are related to gluon GPDs at large skewness 𝜉, distinct from the common kinematics in asymptotic high energy where the skewness is typically small. We discuss the nature of large-𝜉 expansion of these amplitudes in terms of the moments of gluon GPDs in the large-𝜉 limit. Based on that, we propose several ways to extract the first few moments of the gluon GPDs from these amplitudes, with the leading ones corresponding to the gluonic gravitational or energy-momentum tensor form factors (GFFs). We apply these methods to analyze the recent near threshold 𝐽/𝜓 production measurements by the 𝐽/𝜓 007 experiment and GlueX Collaboration and find that the 𝜉 scaling of the measured differential cross sections is consistent with the asymptotic behavior. However, the current data are not accurate enough yet for a complete determination of the gluonic GFFs, and therefore we consider some prospects for better extractions in the future.

Generalized parton distributions from lattice QCD with asymmetric momentum transfer: Axial-vector case

Recently, we made significant advancements in improving the computational efficiency of lattice QCD calculations for generalized parton distributions (GPDs). This progress was achieved by adopting calculations of matrix elements in asymmetric frames, deviating from the computationally-expensive symmetric frame typically used, and allowing freedom in the choice for the distribution of the momentum transfer between the initial and final states. A crucial aspect of this approach involves the adoption of a Lorentz covariant parametrization for the matrix elements, introducing Lorentz-invariant amplitudes. This approach also allows us to propose an alternative definition of quasi-GPDs, ensuring frame independence and potentially reduce power corrections in matching to light cone GPDs. In our previous work, we presented lattice QCD results for twist-2 unpolarized GPDs ( H and E ) of quarks obtained from calculations performed in asymmetric frames at zero skewness. Building upon this work, we now introduce a novel Lorentz covariant parametrization for the axial-vector matrix elements. We employ this parametrization to compute the axial-vector GPD H ˜ at zero skewness, using an N f = 2 + 1 + 1 ensemble of twisted mass fermions with clover improvement. The light-quark masses employed in our calculations correspond to a pion mass of approximately 260 MeV. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Nonlocal chiral contributions to generalized parton distributions of the proton at nonzero skewness

We compute the one-loop contributions to spin-averaged generalized parton distributions (GPDs) in the proton from pseudoscalar mesons with intermediate octet and decuplet baryon states at nonzero skewness. Our framework is based on nonlocal covariant chiral effective theory, with ultraviolet divergences regularized by introducing a relativistic regulator derived consistently from the nonlocal Lagrangian. Using the splitting functions calculated from the nonlocal Lagrangian, we find the nonzero skewness GPDs from meson loops by convoluting with the phenomenological pion GPD and the generalized distribution amplitude, and verify that these satisfy the correct polynomiality properties. We also compute the lowest two moments of GPDs to quantify the meson loop effects on the Dirac, Pauli, and gravitational form factors of the proton.

String-based parametrization of nucleon GPDs at any skewness: A comparison to lattice QCD

We introduce a string-based parametrization for nucleon quark and gluon generalized parton distributions (GPDs) valid at all skewness values. The conformal moments of the GPDs are expressed as sums of the spin-j nucleon A-form factor and the skewness-dependent spin-j nucleon D-form factor. This representation, which fulfills the polynomiality condition (due to Lorentz invariance) and does not rely on model-specific assumptions, is derived from t-channel string exchanges in anti-de Sitter spaces. The spin-j nucleon D-form factor is closely related to the spin-j nucleon A-form factor. We use the Mellin moments from empirical parton distributions to model the spin-j nucleon A-form factors. Using only five Regge slope parameters, fixed from the electromagnetic and gravitational form factors, our string-based parametrization generates accurate singlet, nonsinglet, isovector, and flavor-separated nucleon quark GPDs, along with symmetric nucleon gluon GPDs from their Mellin-Barnes integral representations. Our isovector nucleon quark GPD is in agreement with existing lattice data. Our string-based parametrization should facilitate the empirical extraction and global analysis of nucleon GPDs in exclusive processes, bypassing the deconvolution challenge.

Combining lattice QCD and phenomenological inputs on generalised parton distributions at moderate skewness

Abstract We present a systematic study demonstrating the impact of lattice QCD data on the extraction of generalised parton distributions (GPDs). For this purpose, we use a previously developed modelling of GPDs based on machine learning techniques fulfilling the theoretical requirements of polynomiality, a form of positivity constraint and known reduction limits. A special care is given to estimate the uncertainty stemming from the ill-posed character of the connection between GPDs and the experimental processes usually considered to constrain them, like deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS). Moke lattice QCD data inputs are included in a Bayesian framework to a prior model based on an Artificial Neural Network. This prior model is fitted to reproduce the most experimentally accessible information of a phenomenological extraction by Goloskokov and Kroll. We highlight the impact of the precision, correlation and kinematic coverage of lattice data on GPD extraction at moderate $$\xi $$ ξ which has only been brushed in the literature so far, paving the way for a joint extraction of GPDs.

Twist-3 partonic distributions from lattice QCD

Twist-3 partonic distributions contain important information that characterizes nucleon’s structure. In this work, we show our lattice exploration of the twist-3 PDFs g_T(x) g T ( x ) , and h_L(x) h L ( x ) . We also present our preliminary results on the twist-3 GPD \tilde{G}_2(x) G ̃ 2 ( x ) . We use the quasi-distribution approach to connect the lattice-extracted matrix elements, renormalized in the RI/MOM scheme, to light-cone distributions, applying the matching procedure that we developed in parallel. We also calculate the twist-2 counterparts of g_T(x) g T ( x ) and h_L(x) h L ( x ) , i.e. g_1(x) g 1 ( x ) , and h_1(x) h 1 ( x ) , and test the Wandzura-Wilczek approximation.

Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering on the Proton in Hall A at Jefferson Lab

The structure of nucleons as they are composed of quarks and gluons is not well understood. Non-perturbative methods (such as lattice-QCD) describing quark/gluon interactions are ongoing in development, but still cannot fully reproduce the structure of hadrons. Among the observables which describe longitudinal momentum and transverse position of partons, generalized parton distributions (GPDs) describe the correlations between the two, and are accessible through p(right-arrow e;e'y)p scattering experiments in the Bjorken limit when factorization holds. A complete understanding of these functions will help us to better understand the structure of nucleons. Experiment E12-06-114 was performed by JLab's DVCS Hall A Collaboration in 2014 and 2016. Using a polarized electron beam and a liquid hydrogen target, the collaboration measured cross sections for the exclusive reaction p(right-arrow e;e'y)p at xB=0.36, 0.48, and 0.60,3 .2 lte Q2 lte 9.00, and -1.28 lte t lte -0.69. This dissertation details the analysis and results of measuring the p(right-arrow e;e'y)p cross section at xB=0.48. The measured cross section results allow us to demonstrate the validity of factorization in our kinematic regime, and extract Compton Form Factor combinations important for understanding GPDs. Additionally, the cross section results are used to test existing GPD models, KM10a and KM15.

Highly Efficient Magnetocaloric Natural Gas Liquefaction (Final Report)

Over the twelve-month project the following achievements were accomplished: • Liquefication of methane as primary component of natural gas was accomplished with a magnetocaloric liquefier (MCL) prototype. This was the first time an MCL was used to liquefy methane. • Improved MCL designs were completed. • Cooling to 135 K from room temperature was achieved for the first time in a single MCL stage with dual, reciprocating four-layer regenerators. • Techno-economic analysis for a multi-stage 5 tonne/day magnetocaloric liquefier was completed. The detailed thermodynamic analysis of this MCL design showed a figure of merit (FOM) of 0.6 was achievable. This is a ~2x improvement over current state of the art. • Cost of an efficient 5 tonne/day LNG multi-stage liquefier was projected to be ~$\$$3.1 MM for the 5 tonne/day MCL with achievable design assumptions. • Market study of U.S. merchant LNG demand by energy sector was completed showing that at beginning of 2019, total use was ~2.5 million gallons/day primarily in three sectors that was filled by ~20 small companies in the merchant LNG supply business producing ~2.3 million gpd. These data exclude LNG produced at dedicated peak shaving and large export plants. • Business case for MCL technology based on LNG market study was completed showing the high FOM feature of MCL reduces cost of plant power, and lower capital cost reduces debt repayment and plant depreciation operating expenses. However, today’s demand for U.S. merchant LNG in most sectors is satisfied with conventional technology. Further, with today’s extremely low natural gas (NG) feedstock costs (e.g., ~$\$$1.8/MMBtu), the cost of fuel for NG gensets and for LNG feedstock is already very low. Therefore, possible new merchant LNG liquefier plant developers anticipating demand growth in the transportation, industrial, and electricity generation sectors do not obtain sufficient cost benefits to adopt new, commercially unproven MCL technology. • Other market factors such as remoteness from existing NG pipelines, or unfilled or unsatisfied applications such as boil-off gas re-liquefaction in LNG vessels, or policy factors such as some form of emissions-related fees may make lower capital costs and higher FOM of MCL technology attractive for new small-scale (~50 tonne/day) LNG plants. Two potentially attractive niche markets for MCL technology were identified: i) re-liquefaction of boil-off gas from large LNG transport vessels where severe transport conditions are problematic for conventional technology; and ii) providing LNG in distributed-scale plants that eliminate road transport costs to meet diverse, smaller-scale, distributed LNG bunkering fuel demands. By eliminating significant cryogenic tanker delivery costs and create an attractive cost-savings benefit with small-scale MCL plants.

An Algorithm to Calibrate and Correct the Response to Unpolarized Radiation of the X-Ray Polarimeter Onboard IXPE

The Gas Pixel Detector (GPD) is an X-ray polarimeter to fly onboard IXPE and other missions. To correctly measure the source polarization, the response of IXPE’s GPDs to unpolarized radiation has to be calibrated and corrected. In this paper, we describe the way such response is measured with laboratory sources and the algorithm to apply such correction to the observations of celestial sources. The latter allows to correct the response to polarization of single photons, therefore allowing great flexibility in all the subsequent analysis. Our correction approach is tested against both monochromatic and nonmonochromatic laboratory sources and with simulations, finding that it correctly retrieves the polarization up to the statistical limits of the planned IXPE observations.
