Evaluation of cosmogenic production of 39 Ar and 42 Ar for rare-event physics using underground argon

Underground argon (UAr) with lower cosmogenic activities of 39 Ar and 42 Ar has been planned as a detector in detecting scintillation light and charge collection using time projection chambers for dark matter searches and as a veto detector in suppressing backgrounds for neutrinoless double beta decay (0$vββ$ ) experiments. Long-lived radioactive isotopes, 39 Ar and 42 Ar, can also be produced on the surface when UAr is pumped out from a deep well. Understanding the production of long-lived isotopes in Ar is important for utilizing UAr for dark matter and 0$vββ$ experiments in terms of its production, transportation, and storage. Ar exposure to cosmic rays at sea-level is simulated using Geant4 for a given cosmic ray muon, neutron, and proton energy spectrum. Here we report the simulated cosmogenic production rates of 39 Ar, 42 Ar, and other long-lived isotopes at sea-level from fast neutrons, high energy muons, and high energy protons. Total production rates of 938.53/kg Ar day and 5.81 × 10 -3 /kg Ar day for 39 Ar and 42 Ar are found from our simulation. Utilizing these production rates, we set a time limit of 954 days constrained by the production of 39 Ar for UAr to be on the surface before it compromises the sensitivity for a dark matter experiment. Similarly, a time limit of 1702 days constrained by the production of 42 Ar is found for a 0$vββ$ experiment.

Fast & accurate emulation of two-body scattering observables without wave functions

We combine Newton's variational method with ideas from eigenvector continuation to construct a fast & accurate emulator for two-body scattering observables. The emulator will facilitate the application of rigorous statistical methods for interactions that depend smoothly on a set of free parameters. Our approach begins with a trial K or T matrix constructed from a small number of exact solutions to the Lippmann–Schwinger equation. Subsequent emulation only requires operations on small matrices. We provide several applications to short-range potentials with and without the Coulomb interaction and partial-wave coupling. It is shown that the emulator can accurately extrapolate far from the support of the training data. When used to emulate the neutron-proton cross section with a modern chiral interaction as a function of 26 free parameters, it reproduces the exact calculation with negligible error and provides an over 300x improvement in CPU time.

Non-conformal attractor in boost-invariant plasmas

We study the dissipative evolution of (0+1)-dimensionally expanding media with Bjorken symmetry using the Boltzmann equation for massive particles in relaxation-time approximation. Breaking conformal symmetry by a mass induces a non-zero bulk viscous pressure in the medium. It is shown that even a small mass (in units of the local temperature) drastically modifies the well-known attractor for the shear Reynolds number previously observed in massless systems. For generic nonzero particle mass, neither the shear nor the bulk viscous pressure relax quickly to a non-equilibrium attractor; they approach the hydrodynamic limit only late, at small values of the inverse Reynolds numbers. Only the longitudinal pressure, which is a combination of thermal, shear and bulk viscous pressures, continues to show early approach to a far-off-equilibrium attractor, driven by the rapid longitudinal expansion at early times. Second-order dissipative hydrodynamics based on a gradient expansion around locally isotropic thermal equilibrium fails to reproduce this attractor.

Directly probing the Higgs-top coupling at high scales

We explore the sensitivity to new physics for the coupling of the Higgs boson (h) and top quark (t) at high energy scales with the process ${pp}$→ $t\bar{t}h$ at the high-luminosity LHC. This process probes the coupling in both the space-like and time-like domains at a high scale, complementary to the off-shell Higgs processes in the time-like domain. The effects from physics beyond the Standard Model are parametrized in terms of the effective field theory framework and a non-local Higgs-top form factor. Focusing on the boosted Higgs regime in association with jet substructure techniques, we show that the present search can directly probe the Higgs-top coupling to good precision, providing a strong sensitivity to the new physics scale

Light mesons with one dynamical gluon on the light front

We obtain the light meson mass spectroscopy from the light-front quantum chromodynamics (QCD) Hamiltonian, determined for their constituent quark-antiquark and quark-antiquark-gluon Fock components, together with a three-dimensional confinement. The eigenvectors of the light-front effective Hamiltonian provide a good quality description of the pion electromagnetic form factor, decay constant, and the valence quark distribution functions following QCD scale evolution. We also show that the pion's gluon densities can be probed through the pion-nucleus induced $J/ψ$ production data. Our pion parton distribution functions provide excellent agreement with $J/ψ$ production data from widely different experimental conditions.

Double Inozemtsev limits of the quantum DELL system

In this letter we study various Inozemtsev-type limits of the quantum double elliptic (DELL) system when both elliptic parameters are sent to zero at different rates, while the coupling constant is sent to infinity, such that a certain combination of the three parameters is kept fixed. We find a regime in which such double Inozemtsev limit of DELL produces the elliptic Ruijsenaars-Schneider (eRS) Hamiltonians albeit in an unconventional normalization. We discuss other double scaling limits and anisotropic scaling of coordinates and momenta. In addition we provide a formal expression for the eigenvalues of the eRS Hamiltonians solely in terms of their eigenfunctions.

Unveiling the two-proton halo character of 17 Ne: Exclusive measurement of quasi-free proton-knockout reactions

The proton drip-line nucleus 17 Ne is investigated experimentally in order to determine its two-proton halo character. A fully exclusive measurement of the 17 Ne (p, 2p) 16 F* 15 O+p quasi-free one-proton knockout reaction has been performed at GSI at around 500 MeV/nucleon beam energy. All particles resulting from the scattering process have been detected. The relevant reconstructed quantities are the angles of the two protons scattered in quasi-elastic kinematics, the decay of 16 F into 15 O (including γ decays from excited states) and a proton, as well as the 15 O+p relative-energy spectrum and the 16 F momentum distributions. The latter two quantities allow an independent and consistent determination of the fractions of l = 0 and l = 2 motion of the valence protons in 17 Ne. With a resulting relatively small l = 0 component of only around 35(3)%, it is concluded that 17 Ne exhibits a rather modest halo character only. The quantitative agreement of the two values deduced from the energy spectrum and the momentum distributions supports the theoretical treatment of the calculation of momentum distributions after quasi-free knockout reactions at high energies by taking into account distortions based on the Glauber theory. Moreover, the experimental data allow the separation of valence-proton knockout and knockout from the 15O core. The latter process contributes with 11.8(3.1) mb around 40% to the total proton-knockout cross section of 30.3(2.3) mb, which explains previously reported contradicting conclusions derived from inclusive cross sections.

The roles of three-nucleon force and continuum coupling in mirror symmetry breaking of oxygen mass region

With both three-nucleon force and continuum coupling included, we have developed a self-consistent ab initio Gamow shell model within the Gamow Hartree-Fock (GHF) basis obtained by the realistic interaction itself. With the chiral two-nucleon N 3 LO and three-nucleon N 2 LO interactions, the Gamow shell model has been applied to the mirror systems of Z = 8 neutron-rich isotopes and N = 8 proton-rich isotones, giving good agreements with data in binding energies, dripline positions and excitation spectra. The GHF calculated that the 0 ds/2 , 1 S1/2 and 1 p3/2 orbitals are resonances. The resonance states and their interplay with nonresonant continua play a crucial role in the descriptions of nuclei around driplines. Excitation spectra and Thomas-Ehrman shifts observed can be better described when both three-nucleon force and continuum coupling are considered in calculations. The three-nucleon force and continuum coupling produce a combined effect on the Thomas-Ehrman shift, e.g., for the 1/2 + resonance level of 19Na. The calculations help the understandings of related nuclear astrophysical processes.

Spectral function of fermions in a highly occupied non-Abelian plasma

We develop a method to obtain fermion spectral functions non-perturbatively in a non-Abelian gauge theory with high occupation numbers of gauge fields. After recovering the free field case, we extract the spectral function of fermions in a highly occupied non-Abelian plasma close to its non-thermal fixed point, i.e., in a self-similar regime of the non-equilibrium dynamics. We find good agreement with hard loop perturbation theory for medium-induced masses, dispersion relations and quasiparticle residues. We also extract the full momentum dependence of the damping rate of the collective excitations.

Basis light-front quantization approach to photon

We solve for the light-front wave functions (LFWFs) of the physical photon from the eigenvectors of the light-front quantum electrodynamics (QED) Hamiltonian with the aim to determine its bare photon and electron-positron Fock components. We then employ the resulting LFWFs to compute the transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs) and the generalized parton distributions (GPDs) at zero skewness of the photon. The TMDs are found to be in excellent agreement with the lowest-order perturbative results calculated using the electron-positron quantum fluctuation of the photon. The GPDs are also consistent with the perturbative calculations.

Novel Rosenbluth extraction framework for Compton form factors from deeply virtual exclusive experiments

We use a generalization of the Rosenbluth separation method for a model independent simultaneous extraction of the Compton Form Factors $\mathscr{H}$ and $\mathscr{E}$ from virtual Compton scattering data on an unpolarized target. A precise evaluation of $\mathscr{H}$ and $\mathscr{E}$ enabled by the proposed method, is the first step towards pinning down the distribution of angular momentum inside the proton.
