Elliptic surface grid generation on minimal and parametrized surfaces

An elliptic grid generation method, which generates boundary conforming grids in a two dimensional physical space, is presented. The method is based on the composition of an algebraic and elliptic transformation. The composite mapping obeys the Poisson grid generation system with control functions specified by the algebraic transformation. It is shown that the grid generation on a minimal surface in a three dimensional space is equivalent to the grid generation in a two dimensional domain in physical space. A second elliptic grid generation method, which generates boundary conforming grids on smooth surfaces, is presented. Concerning surface modeling, it is shown that bicubic Hermit interpolation is an excellent method to generate a smooth surface crossing a discrete set of control points.

Enhanced Elliptic Grid Generation

Method and system for generating an elliptic grid in generalized coordinates in two or three dimensions, where one or more decay parameters near a boundary segment of a grid are determined as part of the grid solution, rather than being prescribed initially by a user. The decay parameters may vary with one or more generalized coordinates and determine the rate(s) at which separation distances between adjacent grid lines change as one moves toward or away from a grid boundary segment.

Hyperbolic Prismatic Grid Generation and Solution of Euler Equations on Prismatic Grids

A hyperbolic grid generation method is used to generate prismatic grids and an approach using prismatic grids to solve the Euler equations is presented. The theory of the stability and feasibility of the hyperbolic grid generation method is presented. The hyperbolic grid generation method of Steger et al for structured grids is applied to a three dimensional triangularized surface definition to generate a grid that is unstructured on each successive layer. The grid, however, retains structure in the body-normal direction and has a computational cell shaped like a triangular prism. In order to take advantage of the structure in the normal direction, a finite-volume scheme that treats the unknowns along the normal direction implicitly is introduced and the flow over a sphere is simulated.

Methods and systems for syngas production and for efficient, flexible energy generation

Methods for producing syngas (e.g., H2 and CO) include introducing a stream comprising H2O and CO2 to a high-temperature co-electrolysis (HTCE) unit. A CO2 sweep gas is also introduced to the HTCE unit. Both H2O and CO2 are reduced in the HTCE unit to form the syngas and to form O2 that is swept away from the HTCE unit by the CO2 sweep gas, and the O2 and CO2 are then introduced to a combustion device (e.g., a gasifier), which may be configured to generate electrical power, as a result of combusting a carbonaceous fuel in the presence of the O2 and CO2. The HTCE unit is powered at least in part by power from an electricity-generating sub-system (e.g., at least one nuclear power plant). Related systems are also disclosed.

Application of a variational method for generating adaptive grids

The application of variational methods for generating adaptive grids is not as straightforward as one is led to believe. Proper scaling, suitable weight functions and appropriate clustering on boundaries must be employed to obtain a satisfactory grid. This work, which is based on the framework developed by Brackbill and Saltzman, provides simple methods for determining scaling and investigates possible options for selecting the weight function and clustering points on the boundaries. The concepts developed here are applied to two two-dimensional problems: a model problem based on Burger's equation which contains two length scales and, transonic flow past airfoils using the Euler equations.

A new method for generating and maintaining rigid formats in NASTRAN

A new method for generating and updating Rigid Formats in NASTRAN is discussed. The heart of this method is a Rigid Format data base that is in card-image format and that can therefore be easily maintained by the use of standard text editors. Each Rigid Format entry in this data base will contain the Direct Matrix Abstraction Program (DMAP) for that Rigid Format along with the related restart, subset and substructure control tables. NASTRAN will read this data base directly in every NASTRAN run and perform the necessary transformations to allow the DMAP to be processed and compiled by the NASTRAN executive. This approach will permit Rigid Formats to be changed without unnecessary compilations and relinking of NASTRAN. Furthermore, this approach will also make it very easy for users to make permanent changes to existing Rigid Formats as well as to generate their own Rigid Formats. This new method will be incorporated in a future release of the public version of NASTRAN.

Method for generating and dispensing a powdered release agent

A method for generating and dispensing a powdered release agent during an additive manufacturing build is disclosed. A solid body of release agent material is ground insitu by a grinder and dispensed on a surface of the part to prevent adhesion of an adjacent layer of a base material. With the addition of the powdered release agent, a support structure is easily separated from the base material when the part is complete, saving time and preventing the part from sustaining unintentional damage. Since no powdered release agent is actually loaded or stored in the apparatus, the potential for spillage, waste, inconsistent dispensing, inadvertent dispensing, and clumping due to humidity is eliminated.

A method for generating moving, orthogonal, area preserving polygonal meshes

A new method for generating locally orthogonal polygonal meshes from a set of generator points is presented in which polygon areas are a constraint. The area constraint property is particularly useful for particle methods where moving polygons track a discrete portion of material. Because Voronoi polygon meshes have some very attractive mathematical and numerical properties for numerical computation, a generalization of Voronoi polygon meshes was formulated that enforces a polygon area constraint. Area constrained moving polygonal meshes allow one to develop hybrid particle-mesh numerical methods that display some of the most attractive features of each approach. It is shown that this mesh construction method can continuously reconnect a moving, unstructured polygonal mesh in a pseudo-Lagrangian fashion without change in cell area/volume, and the method's ability to simulate various physical scenarios is shown. Overall, the advantages are identified for incompressible fluid flow calculations, with demonstration cases that include material discontinuities of all three phases of matter and large density jumps.

A method for generating numerical pilot opinion ratings using the optimal pilot model

A method for generating numerical pilot opinion ratings using the optimal pilot model is introduced. The method is contained in a rating hypothesis which states that the numerical rating which a human pilot assigns to a specific vehicle and task can be directly related to the numerical value of the index of performance resulting from the optimal pilot modeling procedure as applied to that vehicle and task. The hypothesis is tested using the data from four piloted simulations. The results indicate that the hypothesis is reasonable, but that the predictive capability of the method is a strong function of the accuracy of the pilot model itself. This accuracy is, in turn, dependent upon the parameters which define the optimal modeling problem. A procedure for specifying the parameters for the optimal pilot model in the absence of experimental data is suggested.

Method for generation of spiral bevel gears with conjugate gear tooth surfaces

A method for generation of spiral bevel gears is proposed that provides conjugate gear tooth surfaces. This method is based on a new principle for the performance of parallel motion of a straight line that slides along two mating ellipses with related dimensions and parameters of orientation. The parallel motion of the straight line, that is, the contact normal, is performed parallel to the line which passes through the foci of symmetry of the related ellipses. The manufacturing of gears can be performed with the existing Gleason's equipment.

Generation of Tin-Vacancy Centers in Diamond via Shallow Ion Implantation and Subsequent Diamond Overgrowth

Group IV color centers in diamond have garnered great interest for their potential as optically active solid-state spin qubits. The future utilization of such emitters requires the development of precise site-controlled emitter generation techniques that are compatible with high-quality nanophotonic devices. This task is more challenging for color centers with large group IV impurity atoms, which are otherwise promising because of their predicted long spin coherence times without a dilution refrigerator. For example, when applied to the negatively charged tin-vacancy (SnV – ) center, conventional site-controlled color center generation methods either damage the diamond surface or yield bulk spectra with unexplained features. Here we demonstrate a novel method to generate site-controlled SnV – centers with clean bulk spectra. We shallowly implant Sn ions through a thin implantation mask and subsequently grow a layer of diamond via chemical vapor deposition. This method can be extended to other color centers and integrated with quantum nanophotonic device fabrication.

Optical Device, System, and Method of Generating High Angular Momentum Beams

An optical device, optical system, and method of generating optical beams having high angular momenta are provided. The optical device includes a whispering gallery mode resonator defining a resonator radius and an elongated wavegWde having a length defined between a first end and a second end of the waveguide. The waveguide defines a waveguide radius which increases at least along a portion of the length of the waveguide in a direction from the first end to the second end. The waveguide radius at the first end of the waveguide is smaller than the resonator radius and the resonator is integrally formed with the first end of the waveguide.
