First simultaneous global QCD analysis of kaon and pion parton distributions with lattice QCD constraints

We perform the first simultaneous global QCD analysis of pion and kaon parton distribution functions (PDFs) constrained by pion- and kaon-induced Drell-Yan (DY) and leading neutron electroproduction data together with lattice QCD data on pion and kaon PDF moments. The analysis indicates a softer valence u ¯ distribution in the K − than in the π − and a significantly more peaked valence s -quark density in K − compared with the u ¯ . The effective exponent governing the high- x behavior of the PDF is found to be larger for u ¯ in the kaon, β u ¯ K − = 1.6 ( 2 ) , than in the pion, β u ¯ π − = 1.16 ( 4 ) , in the range 0.7 ≤ x ≤ 0.95 . From the gluon momentum fractions, we find the pion’s gluon content accounts for ≈ 1 / 3 of the mass budget of the pion at μ = 2 GeV , but only ≈ 1 / 4 for the kaon.

Moments of parton distribution functions of the pion from lattice QCD using gradient flow

We present a nonperturbative determination of the pion valence parton distribution function (PDF) moment ratios ⟨𝑥 𝑛−1 ⟩/⟨𝑥⟩ up to 𝑛 = 6, using the gradient flow in lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD). As a testing ground, we employ SU(3) isosymmetric gauge configurations generated by the OpenLat initiative with a pseudoscalar mass of 𝑚 𝜋 ≃ 411 MeV. Our analysis uses four lattice spacings and a nonperturbatively improved action, enabling full control over the continuum extrapolation, and the limit of vanishing flow time, 𝑡 →0. The flowed ratios exhibit O(𝑎 2 ) scaling across the ensembles, and the continuum-extrapolated results, matched to the $\overline{MS}$ scheme at 𝜇 = 2 GeV using next-to-next-to-leading order matching coefficients, show only mild residual flow-time dependence. The resulting ratios, computed with a relatively small number of configurations, are consistent with phenomenological expectations for the pion’s valence distribution, with statistical uncertainties that are competitive with modern global fits. These findings demonstrate that the gradient flow provides an efficient and systematically improvable method to access partonic quantities from first principles. Future extensions of this work will target lighter pion masses toward the physical point, and applications to nucleon structure such as the proton PDFs and the gluon and sea-quark distributions.

Global QCD analysis of spin PDFs in the proton with high-𝑥 and lattice constraints

We perform a comprehensive global QCD analysis of spin-dependent parton distribution functions (PDFs), combining all available data on inclusive and semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (DIS), as well as inclusive weak boson and jet production in polarized 𝑝⁢𝑝 collisions, simultaneously extracting spin-averaged PDFs and fragmentation functions. Including recent Jefferson Lab DIS data at high 𝑥, together with subleading power corrections to the leading-twist framework, allows us to verify the stability of the PDFs for 𝑊 2 ≥ 4 GeV 2 and quantify the uncertainties on the spin structure functions more reliably. We explore the use of new lattice QCD data on gluonic pseudo-Ioffe time distributions, which, together with jet production and high-𝑥 DIS data, improve the constraints on the polarized gluon PDF. The expanded kinematic reach afforded by the data into the high-𝑥 region allows us to refine the bounds on higher-twist contributions to the spin structure functions, and test the validity of the Bjorken sum rule.

Leading order track functions in a hot and dense QGP

We study the modifications to the fragmentation pattern of partons into charged particles in the presence of a hot and dense quark gluon plasma. To this end, we analyze the perturbative renormalization group equations of the track functions, which describe the energy fraction carried by charged hadrons. Focusing on pure Yang-Mills theory, we compute the lowest-order moments of the medium-modified track functions, which are found to be sensitive to the reduced phase space for emissions in the medium and to energy loss. We use the extracted moments to calculate the energy energy correlator (EEC) on tracks in the collinear limit. The EEC on medium-evolved tracks does not differ qualitatively from the EEC on vacuum tracks despite being sensitive to the color decoherence transition and suppressing the distribution due to quenching, as seen in other jet observables. Charm quark evolution in the early stages of heavy-ion collisions

Heavy quarks are predominantly generated at the initial stage of relativistic heavy-ion collisions such that heavy flavor observables have the potential to provide information on the pre-equilibrium medium dynamics. In this study, we investigate the sensitivity of D-meson $R_{AA}$ and $v_2$ to early-time charm quark dynamics in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=5.02 TeV. We employ the IP-Glasma+MUSIC+UrQMD framework to model the evolution of the bulk medium. Charm quarks are generated using PYTHIA with nuclear parton distribution functions and evolved using Langevin dynamics within MARTINI. We observe that even though there is significant momentum broadening in the earliest stage, D-meson $R_{AA}$ and $v_2$ are only weakly sensitive to pre-equilibrium interactions.

Parametrization of Generalized Parton Distributions from 𝑡-Channel String Exchange in AdS Spaces

We introduce a string-based parametrization for nucleon quark and gluon generalized parton distributions (GPDs) that is valid for all skewness. Our approach leverages conformal moments, representing them as the sum of spin-𝑗 nucleon 𝐴-form factor and skewness-dependent spin-𝑗 nucleon 𝐷-form factor, derived from 𝑡-channel string exchange in AdS spaces consistent with Lorentz invariance and unitarity. This model-independent framework, satisfying the polynomiality condition due to Lorentz invariance, uses Mellin moments from empirical data to estimate these form factors. With just five Regge slope parameters, our method accurately produces various nucleon quark GPD types and symmetric nucleon gluon GPDs through pertinent Mellin-Barnes integrals. Our isovector nucleon quark GPD is in agreement with existing lattice data, promising to improve the empirical extraction and global analysis of nucleon GPDs in exclusive processes, by avoiding the deconvolution problem at any skewness, for the first time.

QCD phenomenology

First study of polarized proton-proton scattering with small-𝑥 helicity evolution

We perform a phenomenological study of helicity-dependent parton distribution functions (PDFs) using small-𝑥 helicity evolution equations, incorporating for the first time single-inclusive jet production data in polarized proton-proton (𝑝⁢𝑝) scattering at parton momentum fractions 𝑥 <0.1. We also simultaneously include double-longitudinal spin asymmetries in inclusive and semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering probing 𝑥 <0.1. Employing the polarized small-𝑥 pure-glue calculation of 𝑝⁢𝑝 → 𝑔⁡𝑋 for the jet production cross section, we modify the large-𝑁 𝑐 &𝑁 𝑓 KPS-CTT evolution equations by setting 𝑁 𝑓 = 0 to replicate the large-𝑁𝑐 (pure-glue) limit, while retaining external quark flavors for the spinor field operators. We find that the 𝑝⁢𝑝 data have a considerable impact on the helicity PDFs at small 𝑥, reducing their uncertainties and leading to a total quark and gluon helicity in the proton for 𝑥 < 0.1 of −0.04 ±0.23. Combining our analysis with a recent JAM helicity PDF analysis of the world polarized data, which includes 𝑥 > 0.1, we find a total quark and gluon helicity contribution for 𝑥 >10 −7 of between 0.02 and 0.51.

Determination of nuclear PDFs using Markov chain Monte Carlo methods

Global QCD analyses of nuclear parton distribution functions (nPDFs) have traditionally relied on the Hessian method for uncertainty estimation. However, the inherent Gaussian approximation and reliance on local curvature often prove insufficient for nPDF fits, which are frequently characterized by limited data constraints and non-Gaussian likelihoods. In this paper, we present the first nPDF determination based on Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) techniques, implemented within the nCTEQ framework using an adaptive Metropolis-Hastings algorithm. The MCMC approach enables a direct mapping of the posterior distribution and reveals a highly nontrivial parameter-space structure, including multiple modes and pronounced non-Gaussian behavior, particularly for the valence PDFs. We perform the first single-nucleus global analysis of lead PDFs using exclusively lead data and compare it to a multi-nuclei fit employing a standard analytic A dependence. The inclusion of lighter nuclei reduces quark uncertainties and modifies the shape of the lead PDFs, while leaving the gluon distribution largely unaffected. A complementary Hessian analysis exposes systematic limitations of the Gaussian approximation. Our results demonstrate that MCMC methods provide a more reliable framework for uncertainty quantification in nPDF determinations.

Anisotropic jet broadening and jet shape

In this paper, we explore the use of jet substructure as a way of probing phenomena which break the isotropic behavior of jets, such as jet propagation through an anisotropically flowing quark-gluon plasma or spin correlations. We introduce two novel observables for this purpose: the azimuthal-dependent jet broadening and the azimuthal-dependent jet shape, which generalize the traditional isotropic substructure studies. Using Soft-Collinear Effective Theory, we explicitly calculate the jet functions associated with these observables with a standard jet axis and with a Winner-Take-All jet axis in both the resummed and fixed order limits. While our analysis first and foremost establishes the formalism for the azimuthal-dependent jet substructure, it also brings to light new results for jet substructure in the azimuthally integrated case, such as the semi-inclusive jet function and the exclusive jet shape for the Winner-Take-All axis, and the jet broadening in the fixed order region. As an illustrative example for the new formalism we demonstrate that the azimuthal-dependent jet broadening can be used as a direct probe of the transversity parton distribution function in deep inelastic scattering.

New Data-Driven Constraints on the Sign of Gluon Polarization in the Proton

Recently, the possible existence of negative gluon helicity Δ g has been observed to be compatible with existing empirical constraints, including from jet production in polarized proton-proton collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, and lattice QCD data on polarized gluon Ioffe time distributions. We perform a new global analysis of polarized parton distributions in the proton with new constraints from the high- x region of deep-inelastic scattering (DIS). A dramatic reduction in the quality of the fit for the negative Δ g replicas compared to those with positive Δ g suggests that the negative Δ g solution cannot simultaneously account for high- x polarized DIS data along with lattice and polarized jet data. Modification of Quark-Gluon Distributions in Nuclei by Correlated Nucleon Pairs

We extend the QCD Parton Model analysis using a factorized nuclear structure model incorporating individual nucleons and pairs of correlated nucleons. Our analysis of high-energy data from lepton deep-inelastic scattering, Drell-Yan, and W and Z boson production simultaneously extracts the universal effective distribution of quarks and gluons inside correlated nucleon pairs, and their nucleus-specific fractions. Such successful extraction of these universal distributions marks a significant advance in our understanding of nuclear structure properties connecting nucleon- and parton-level quantities. Quantum entanglement correlations in double quark PDFs

Methods from Quantum Information Theory are used to scrutinize quantum correlations encoded in the two-quark density matrix over light-cone momentum fractions x 1 and x 2 . A nonperturbative three quark model light-cone wavefunction predicts significant nonclassical correlations associated with the “entanglement negativity” measure for asymmetric and small quark momentum fractions. We perform one step of QCD scale evolution of the entire density matrix, not just its diagonal (dPDF), by computing collinearly divergent corrections due to the emission of a gluon. Finally, we present first qualitative numerical results for single-step scale evolution of quantum entanglement correlations in double quark PDFs. At a higher Q 2 scale, the nonclassical correlations manifest in the dPDF for nearly symmetric momentum fractions.

Nuclear suppression of coherent J / ψ photoproduction in heavy-ion ultraperipheral collisions and leading twist nuclear shadowing

We determine the nuclear suppression factor S Pb ( x ) , where x = M J / ψ 2 / W γ p 2 with M J / ψ the J / ψ mass and W γ p the photon-nucleon energy, for the cross section of coherent J / ψ photoproduction in heavy-ion ultraperipheral collisions at the Large Hadron Collider and Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider by performing the χ 2 fit to all available data on the cross section d σ A A → J / ψ A A / d y as a function of the J / ψ rapidity y and the photoproduction cross section σ γ A → J / ψ A ( W γ p ) as a function of W γ p . We find that while the d σ A A → J / ψ A A / d y data alone constrain S Pb ( x ) for x ≥ 10 − 3 , the combined d σ A A → J / ψ A A / d y and σ γ A → J / ψ A ( W γ p ) data allow us to determine S Pb ( x ) in the wide interval 10 − 5 < x < 0.05 . In particular, the data favor S Pb ( x ) , which decreases with a decrease of x in the 10 − 4 < x < 0.01 interval and can be both decreasing or constant for x < 10 − 4 . Identifying S Pb ( x ) with the ratio of the gluon distributions in Pb and the proton R g ( x , Q 0 2 ) = g A ( x , Q 0 2 ) / [ A g p ( x , Q 0 2 ) ] , we demonstrate that the leading twist approximation for nuclear shadowing provides a good description of all the data on d σ A A → J / ψ A A / d y and σ γ A → J / ψ A ( W γ p ) as well as on the experimental values for S Pb ( x ) derived from σ γ A → J / ψ A ( W γ p ) . We also show that modern nuclear parton distributions reasonably reproduce S Pb ( x ) as well. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Regularization prescription for the mixing between nonlocal gluon and quark operators

It is well known that in the study of mixing between nonlocal gluon and quark bilinear operators there exists an ambiguity when relating coordinate space and momentum space results. In this work, we show that this ambiguity is due to the lack of a proper regularization prescription of the singularity that arises when the separation between the gluon/quark fields approaches zero. We then demonstrate that dimensional regularization resolves this issue and yields consistent results in both coordinate and momentum space. This prescription is also compatible with lattice extractions of parton distributions from nonlocal operators.

Transverse Momentum Distributions from Lattice QCD without Wilson Lines

The transverse-momentum-dependent distributions (TMDs), which are defined by gauge-invariant 3D parton correlators with staple-shaped lightlike Wilson lines, can be calculated from quark and gluon correlators fixed in the Coulomb gauge on a Euclidean lattice. These quantities can be expressed gauge invariantly as the correlators of Coulomb-gauge-dressed fields, which reduce to the standard TMD correlators under principal-value prescription in the infinite boost limit. In the framework of large-momentum effective theory, a quasi-TMD defined from such correlators in a large-momentum hadron state can be matched to the TMD via a factorization formula, whose exact form is derived using soft collinear effective theory and verified at one-loop order. Compared to the currently used gauge-invariant correlators, this new method can substantially improve statistical precision and simplify renormalization for the time-reversal-even TMDs, which will greatly enhance the predicative power of lattice QCD in the nonperturbative region.

Lattice QCD calculation of 𝑥-dependent meson distribution amplitudes at physical pion mass with threshold logarithm resummation

We present a lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) calculation of the 𝑥-dependent pion and kaon distribution amplitudes (DA) in the framework of large momentum effective theory. This calculation is performed on a fine lattice of 𝑎 = 0.076 fm at physical pion mass, with the pion boosted to 1.8 GeV and kaon boosted to 2.3 GeV. We renormalize the matrix elements in the hybrid scheme and match to Math output error with a subtraction of the leading renormalon in the Wilson-line mass. The perturbative matching is improved by resumming the large logarithms related to the small quark and gluon momenta in the soft-gluon limit. After resummation, we demonstrate that we are able to calculate a range of 𝑥 ∈[𝑥 0 ,1 − 𝑥 0 ] with 𝑥 0 = 0.25 for pion and 𝑥 0 = 0.2 for kaon with theoretical systematic errors under control. The kaon DA is shown to be slighted skewed, and narrower than pion DA. Although the 𝑥-dependence cannot be direct calculated beyond these ranges, we estimate higher moments of the pion and kaon DAs by complementing our calculation with short-distance factorization.

Hard jet substructure in a multistage approach

We present predictions and postdictions for a wide variety of hard jet-substructure observables using a multistage model within the framework. The details of the multistage model and the various parameter choices are described in []. A novel feature of this model is the presence of two stages of jet modification: a high-virtuality phase [modeled using the modular all twist transverse-scattering elastic-drag and radiation model ()], where modified coherence effects diminish medium-induced radiation, and a lower virtuality phase [modeled using the linear Boltzmann transport model ()], where parton splits are fully resolved by the medium as they endure multiple scattering induced energy loss. Energy-loss calculations are carried out on event-by-event viscous fluid dynamic backgrounds constrained by experimental data. The uniform and consistent descriptions of multiple experimental observables demonstrate the essential role of modified coherence effects and the multistage modeling of jet evolution. Using the best choice of parameters from [], and with no further tuning, we present calculations for the medium modified jet fragmentation function, the groomed jet momentum fraction z g and angular separation r g distributions, as well as the nuclear modification factor of groomed jets. These calculations provide accurate descriptions of published data from experiments at the Large Hadron Collider. Furthermore, we provide predictions from the multistage model for future measurements at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Published by the American Physical Society 2024
