Evaluation of an LED Simulator for Single- and Multi-Junction PV Cell Performance Testing

We present the evaluation of a solar simulator comprising a Light Emitting Diode (LED) array as its light source. While multiple applications can be envisioned for such a light source, here we focus on its use for performance testing of solar cells at Standard Test Conditions. With this in mind, we present characterization of the spatial uniformity of the irradiance and its temporal stability as well as the spectral range and spectral class. For a multisource simulator, the spectral uniformity across the test plane should also be evaluated and we discuss a method for performing this evaluation that is well suited to a solar cell performance testing application. One major advantage of this simulator is the ability to easily adjust the spectral output as needed in multijunction PV cell measurements and we also discuss this application here.

Deep Multitask Learning Models for Radiation Estimation at High Energy Accelerator Facility

Controlling the dose of radiation exposure in potential radioactive facilities is critical for ensuring the safety of staff and the public. Here, in this paper, we developed machine learning models to estimate radiation exposure efficiently at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab), aiming to enhance safety in both accelerator facilities and public areas. Multiple sensors were deployed around the three experimental halls at JLab. Data on single-beam currents, energy levels, and radiation values at the sensor locations were collected during accelerator operation. We proposed a multi-task learning model for radiation estimation, utilizing either one-dimensional convolutional neural networks (1-D CNNs) or long short-term memory networks (LSTMs) as the backbone. The proposed model was trained to simultaneously estimate radiation levels at the sensor locations. Experimental results demonstrated that the proposed model with LSTM backbone achieved the best estimation performance, with an average R 2 score of 0.7557 for estimation within the same year and 0.7157 for estimation across different years. These results significantly surpassed those of competing models.

Extending C++ for Heterogeneous Quantum-Classical Computing

In this report we present qcor - a language extension to C++ and compiler implementation that enables heterogeneous quantum-classical programming, compilation, and execution in a single-source context. Our work provides a first-of-its-kind C++ compiler enabling high-level quantum kernel (function) expression in a quantum-language agnostic manner, as well as a hardware-agnostic, retargetable compiler workflow targeting a number of physical and virtual quantum computing backends. qcor leverages novel Clang plugin interfaces and builds upon the XACC system-level quantum programming framework to provide a state-of-the-art integration mechanism for quantum-classical compilation that leverages the best from the community at-large. qcor translates quantum kernels ultimately to the XACC intermediate representation, and provides user-extensible hooks for quantum compilation routines like circuit optimization, analysis, and placement. This work details the overall architecture and compiler workflow for qcor, and provides a number of illuminating programming examples demonstrating its utility for near-term variational tasks, quantum algorithm expression, and feed-forward error correction schemes.

SRF Cavity Instability Detection with Machine Learning at CEBAF

During the operation of the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF), one or more unstable superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavities often cause beam loss trips while the unstable cavities themselves do not necessarily trip off. The present RF controls for the legacy cavities report at only 1 Hz, which is too slow to detect fast transient instabilities during these trip events. These challenges make the identification of an unstable cavity out of the hundreds installed at CEBAF a difficult and time-consuming task. To tackle these issues, a fast data acquisition system (DAQ) for the legacy SRF cavities has been developed, which records the sample at 5 kHz. A Principal Component Analysis (PCA) approach is being developed to identify anomalous SRF cavity behavior. We will discuss the present status of the DAQ system and PCA model, along with initial performance metrics. Overall, our method offers a practical solution for identifying unstable SRF cavities, contributing to increased beam availability and machine reliability.

Proxy App Suite Release (FY2020)

Version 4.0 of the ECP Proxy App Suite is practically unchanged from the previous release. The current set of proxies has proven useful for many aspects of benchmarking and co-design and we see little reason to alter the suite. Although there have been few changes to the ECP suite, the team has been hard at work in other areas. In the area of Machine Learning (ML) we have now created a separate proxy suite dedicated to this scientific applications of ML.

FY20 Proxy App Suite Release: Report for ECP Proxy App Project Milestone ADCD-504-10

The suite includes: miniGAN (Generative Adversarial Networks), miniRL (Reinforcement Learning), CRADL (inline inference), Cosmoflow-Benchmark (Convolutional Neural Network), and MLPerf-DeepCam (Climate Segmentation Benchmark). Section 3 contains more information about these proxies as well as the principles that are guiding the development of the suite. We have surveyed available proxies for several application domains including Computational Fluid Dynamics, Quantum Chemistry, Quantum Computing Simulation, Molecular Dynamics, Monte Carlo Transport, and Density Functional Theory to identify gaps in proxy coverage. Several new proxy apps are either already available or will be released soon to fill these gaps. Section 4 provides full details. Finally, section 5 reports on our continued collaboration with the ECP Continuous Integration (CI) effort to use proxy apps to help identify problems and roadblocks to cross-lab CI. We have also assisted the El Capitan Center of Excellence (COE) to stand up a CI system that will be used to test releases of HPE and AMD software stacks. We hope that the COE effort can serve as a model for ECP by showing how the Proxy App Team can work with AD and ST teams identify critical features, kernels, patterns, etc. and incorporate them into a CI system that will help ensure that Frontier and Aurora will provide those needed capabilities.

Technical Feasibility of Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES) Utilizing a Porous Rock Reservoir

Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E) conducted a project to explore the viability of underground compressed air energy storage (CAES) technology. CAES uses low-cost, off-peak electricity to compress air into a storage system in an underground space such as a rock formation or salt cavern. When electricity is needed, the air is withdrawn and used to drive a generator for electricity production.

An LSTM Deep Learning Network for ¿Background Radiation Prediction

Determination of appropriate background radiation is important in any measurement application. Environmental radiation monitors and monitors used to assess dose to individuals outside of controlled areas are particularly susceptible to changes in readings due to fluctuations in the environmental conditions. These fluctuations (e.g. radon progeny concentrations) lead to changes in the detector response in the actual radiation environment, and they need to be taken into account when extracting the net operational doses. Work has been ongoing to apply advances in Deep Learning and Artificial Intelligence to account for changes in detector responses based on environmental parameters; in particular, a Long-Short Term Memory (LSTM) Deep Learning architecture has been utilized to incorporate time-series data into a prediction model. In this work, we present the current status of the project to predict radiation measurements based on meteorological conditions and air packet trajectories extracted using the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT4) model.

ETOP 503689: Pre-optimized cell free lysates for rapid prototyping of genes and pathways

This ETOP project aimed to re-conceive how we engineer complex biological systems by linking pathway design, prospecting, and validation into an integrated framework. Specifically, our vision seeks to advance and interweave high-throughput cell-based systems and rapid cell-free technologies in a way suitable for automation and microdroplet manipulation in a DOE JGI user facility setting. The key technology to be investigated toward this vision is a cell-free platform for combinatorial assembly of pathways by mixing-and-matching crude cell lysates derived from a suite of flux-enhanced background strains, each enriched with pathway enzymes. Through this work, we have established rewired E. coli and S. cerevisiae cells suitable to generated rewired lysates. We have demonstrated that lysates derived from rewired cells can generate higher fluxes of products and can enable a more robust discovery method going from gene to function annotations. Finally, we demonstrate that these rewired lysates can be stored for up to a year and still retain function. Collectively, these technologies enable a more rapid screening approach for enzyme and pathway variants.

Machine Learning Solutions for a Stable Grid Recovery

Grid operating security studies are typically employed to establish operating boundaries, ensuring secure and stable operation for a range of operation under NERC guidelines. However, if these boundaries are severely violated, existing system security margins will be largely unknown, as would be a secure incremental dispatch path to higher security margins while continuing to serve load. As an alternative to the use of complex optimizations over dynamic conditions, this work employs the use of machine learning to identify a sequence of secure state transitions which place the grid in a higher degree of operating security with greater static and dynamic stability margins. Several reinforcement learning solution methods were developed using deep learning neural networks, including Deep Q-learning, Mu-Zero, and the continuous algorithms Proximal Reinforcement Learning, and Advantage Actor Critic Learning. The work is demonstrated on a power grid with three control dimensions but can be scaled in size and dimensionality, which is the subject of ongoing research.

An Action Plan for Rail Energy and Emissions Innovation

The Action Plan for Rail Energy and Emissions Innovation proposes actions to reduce and nearly eliminate emissions in the U.S. rail sector, in line with the U.S. economy-wide goal of net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050. It also proposes actions to leverage the rail system to reduce emissions from other modes. The national goal of achieving a zero-emission freight system by 2050 draws our attention to the fact that freight transport cannot be addressed simply mode by mode, but it should instead be treated as an interdependent system. This is especially true when pursuing decarbonization. This action plan presents how both rail transport and decarbonization intersect with our national transportation decarbonization blueprint, the decarbonization of the freight system, and national transmission goals. The intended audience of this report is the stakeholders who will advance rail decarbonization in a just and economical way by propelling the suite of actions listed here. This includes government at all levels, rail companies, locomotive manufacturers, labor unions, Amtrak, and more.
