Thermal conductance of pressed contacts at liquid helium temperatures

It is pointed out that the optimum design of cryogenic instruments requires accurate thermal models. The present models are limited by a lack of knowledge of the low temperature thermal conductance of the bolted joints which are typically used in the instrument-to-system interface. In connection with studies of pressed contacts, it has been found that the thermal conductance does not obey the Wiedemann-Franz law. The present investigation is concerned with the characterization of the thermal conductance of pressed contacts at liquid helium-4 temperatures, taking into account the dependence of thermal contact conductance on applied force and temperature. It is shown that for the 0.4 micron OFHC copper pressed contact pair, the thermal conductance varies roughly as the second power of the temperature, and increases with increasing applied force.

Vapor-liquid phase separator studies

Porous plugs serve as both entropy rejection devices and phase separation components separating the vapor phase on the downstream side from liquid Helium 2 upstream. The liquid upstream is the cryo-reservoir fluid needed for equipment cooling by means of Helium 2, i.e Helium-4 below its lambda temperature in near-saturated states. The topics outlined are characteristic lengths, transport equations and plug results.

Measurement of the Heat Capacity of He-II Under a Heat Current Near the Lambda Transition

We present preliminary measurements of the heat capacity of superfluid helium-4 under an applied heat current near the lambda transition. The calorimeter is a standard cylindrical thermal conductivity cell with a 0.6 mm gap between two copper endplates. The sidewall is made of stainless steel. A heat current density in the range of 1 to 4 microW/sq cm is applied through the helium sample while a pulse method is used to measure the heat capacity. Temperature changes are recorded with high-resolution thermometers (HRTs) located on the top and bottom endplates. Corrections are made to the readings of the HRTs to account for the Kapitza boundary resistance and the anomalous Kapitza boundary resistance. After the corrections, both the top and the bottom HRTs. give the same heat capacity values. The heat capacity is found to be much larger than the prediction of recent theories. We also plotted our data on a scaled plot to test the prediction of scaling by the theories. The result and its interpretation will be presented. The cell height was deliberately made to be thin to reduce the effects of gravity. Nonetheless, gravity is expected to have significant effects on the heat capacity data in the temperature range of our measurement. A space experiment would remove this unwanted gravity effect and allow the true physics to be examined. Moreover, in the absence of gravity, a deeper cell can be used allowing HRTs to be mounted on to the sidewall providing direct measurements of the helium temperature, unaffected by the anomalous Kapitza boundary resistance.

Simulation of Helium-3 Extraction from Lunar Ilmenite

Knowledge of the trapping mechanisms and diffusion characteristics of solar-wind implanted isotopes in the minerals of the lunar regolith will enable the optimization of the processes to extract solar wind gases from regolith particles. Extraction parameters include the temperature and duration of extraction, particle size, and gas yield. Diffusion data will increase the efficiency and profitability of future mining ventures. This data will also assist in optimizing the evaluations of various potential mining sites based on remote sensing data. For instance, if magnesian ilmenite (Mg,Fel.,Ti03) is found to retain He better than stoichiometric ilmenite (FeTi03), remote sensing data for Mg could be considered in addition to Ti and maturity data. The context of the currently discussed work is the mining of helium-3 for potential use as a fuel for fusion energy generation. However, the potential resources deposited by the solar wind include hydrogen (and derived water), helium-4, nitrogen and carbon. Implantation experiments such as those performed for helium isotopes in ilmenite are important for the optimized extraction of these additional resources. These experiments can easily be reproduced for most elements or isotopes of interest.

Characterizing Al quasiparticle diffusion using a positionable laser (Final Technical Report)

This Career Award accomplished most of its goals, in demonstrating for the first time a low- threshold nuclear recoil detector based on the quantum evaporation of helium-4. Through this work, we trained several PhD students and evolved this niche R&D topic into a central pillar of the DOE-funded TESSERACT project, which now plans to take underground helium data in 2028.
