WHAMII - An enumeration and insertion procedure with binomial bounds for the stochastic time-constrained traveling salesman problem

This paper presents an algorithm (WHAMII) designed to solve the Artificial Intelligence Design Challenge at the 1987 AIAA Guidance, Navigation and Control Conference. The problem under consideration is a stochastic generalization of the traveling salesman problem in which travel costs can incur a penalty with a given probability. The variability in travel costs leads to a probability constraint with respect to violating the budget allocation. Given the small size of the problem (eleven cities), an approach is considered that combines partial tour enumeration with a heuristic city insertion procedure. For computational efficiency during both the enumeration and insertion procedures, precalculated binomial probabilities are used to determine an upper bound on the actual probability of violating the budget constraint for each tour. The actual probability is calculated for the final best tour, and additional insertions are attempted until the actual probability exceeds the bound.

Design and implementation of a multi-sensor robot system for printed circuit board insertion

The design and implementation of a robot system equipped with multiple sensors are described. The robotic assembly system couples the task sequence of the robot with information from different sensors, enabling the system to handle uncertainties encountered during task execution. The target task involves the insertion of a printed circuit board into a card cage. The sensors used are an overhead three-dimensional vision system, a fingertip cross-fire sensor, and a 6-DOF force/torque sensor. The vision system is used to locate the printed circuit boards and the insertion slots. Information provided by the cross-fire sensor is used to complement the information from the vision system in order to obtain a proper grasping location on the printed circuit board. A fuzzy-logic-based system is used to interpret the forces and torques generated by the force/torque sensor during the insertion process. The repeated success of this assembly task over many experimental trials verifies the modeling and controller assumptions.

Improved Insert For Variable Mach Number

Nozzle insert lowers wind-tunnel mach number while maintaining excellent flow quality. Essential components of improved design include sonic first throat, expansion surface, variable boundary-layer bleed, insert itself, and existing, unchanged, contour of nozzle. Modification involves creation of secondary throat and critical addition of boundary-layer bleed path between insert and original tunnel wall. Enables quick change of mach number in existing facility at relatively low cost and requires no special contouring of existing nozzle. Represents simple and cost-effective method of altering mach number in any supersonic wind tunnel.

Rack Insertion End Effector (RIEE) automation

NASA is developing a mechanism to manipulate and insert Racks into the Space Station Logistic modules. The mechanism consists of the following: a base with three motorized degrees of freedom, a 3 section motorized boom that goes from 15 to 44 feet in length, and a Rack Insertion End Effector (RIEE) with 5 hand wheels for precise alignment. The robotics section was tasked with the automation of the RIEE unit. In this report, for the automation of the RIEE unit, application of the Perceptics Vision System was conceptually developed to determine the position and orientation of the RIEE relative to the logistic module, and a MathCad program is written to display the needed displacements for precise alignment and final insertion of the Rack. The uniqueness of this report is that the whole report is in fact a MathCad program including text, derivations, and executable equations with example inputs and outputs.

Rack Insertion End Effector (RIEE) guidance

NASA-KSC has developed a mechanism to handle and insert Racks into the Space Station Logistic Modules. This mechanism consists of a Base with 3 motorized degrees of freedom, a 3 section motorized Boom that goes from 15 to 44 feet in length, and a Rack Insertion End Effector (RIEE) with 5 hand wheels for precise alignment. During the 1993 NASA-ASEE Summer Faculty Fellowship Program at KSC, I designed an Active Vision (Camera) Arrangement and developed an algorithm to determine (1) the displacements required by the Room for its initial positioning and (2) the rotations required at the five hand-wheels of the RIEE, for the insertion of the Rack, using the centroids fo the Camera Images of the Location Targets in the Logistic Module. Presently, during the summer of '94, I completed the preliminary design of an easily portable measuring instrument using encoders to obtain the 3-Dimensional Coordinates of Location Targets in the Logistics Module relative to the RIEE mechanism frame. The algorithm developed in '93 can use the output of this instrument also. Simplification of the '93 work and suggestions for the future work are discussed.

Efficient Merge and Insert Operations for Binary Heaps and Trees

Binary heaps and binary search trees merge efficiently. We introduce a new amortized analysis that allows us to prove the cost of merging either binary heaps or balanced binary trees is O(l), in the amortized sense. The standard set of other operations (create, insert, delete, extract minimum, in the case of binary heaps, and balanced binary trees, as well as a search operation for balanced binary trees) remain with a cost of O(log n). For binary heaps implemented as arrays, we show a new merge algorithm that has a single operation cost for merging two heaps, a and b, of O(absolute value of a + min(log absolute value of b log log absolute value of b. log absolute value of a log absolute value of b). This is an improvement over O(absolute value of a + log absolute value of a log absolute value of b). The cost of the new merge is so low that it can be used in a new structure which we call shadow heaps. to implement the insert operation to a tunable efficiency. Shadow heaps support the insert operation for simple priority queues in an amortized time of O(f(n)) and other operations in time O((log n log log n)/f (n)), where 1 less than or equal to f (n) less than or equal to log log n. More generally, the results here show that any data structure with operations that change its size by at most one, with the exception of a merge (aka meld) operation, can efficiently amortize the cost of the merge under conditions that are true for most implementations of binary heaps and search trees.

Critical monitoring of the Cassini Saturn Orbit Insertion maneuver

The Cassini-Huygens spacecraft will have spent seven years since launch by the time it reaches Saturn and its satellites. The primary mission will begin after the Saturn Orbit Insertion (SOI) scheduled for early July 2004. the insertion will require a critical navigational maneuver that involves firing the orbiter's thrusters leading to the capture in the gravity well of the planet. This paper will describe the challenges and plans by the Cassini Program to monitor the Saturn Orbit Insertion Maneuver.

Experimental and Numerical Characterization of Transient Insertion of Heat Flux Gages in a Cylindrical Black Body Cavity at 1100 C

Initial transient thermal models have been developed to simulate a heat flux gage calibration process capable of generating high heat flux levels of interest to reciprocating and gas turbine engine industries as well as the aerospace industry. These transient models are based on existing, experimentally validated, steady state models of the cylindrical blackbody calibration system. The steady state models were modified to include insertion of a heat flux gage into the hot zone of the calibration system and time varying electrical current passing through the resistance heated blackbody. Heat fluxes computed using the initial transient models were compared to experimental measurements. The calculated and measured transient heat fluxes were within 5% indicating that the major physical phenomena in the transient calibration had been captured by the models. The predicted and measured transient heat fluxes were also compared at two different gage insertion depths. These results indicated that there is an optimum insertion position which maximizes heat flux and minimizes cavity disturbance.

Verification of Triple Modular Redundancy Insertion for Reliable and Trusted Systems

If a system is required to be protected using triple modular redundancy (TMR), improper insertion can jeopardize the reliability and security of the system. Due to the complexity of the verification process and the complexity of digital designs, there are currently no available techniques that can provide complete and reliable confirmation of TMR insertion. We propose a method for TMR insertion verification that satisfies the process for reliable and trusted systems.

A Study of Large Scale Power Extraction and Insertion on Turbofan Performance and Stability

This paper describes the effects of turbofan power extraction and insertion (augmentation) on engine performance and stability. The purpose of this paper is to present how power augmentation affects a dual spool gas turbine engine cycle where the engine will also be required to provide thrust. The goals for the paper are to describe effective limits of power augmentation and offer strategies, utilizing spool choice and variable geometries, to maximize augmentation effect. While Analysis is general two potential uses are explored: Power extraction for electrified aircraft propulsion purposes. And, Power insertion for thrust assist. Results of the paper show it is possible to extract over 20% (at 85% max thrust) and gain roughly 12% of maximum thrust through power insertion.

Recovery from Missed Thrust During Low Thrust Insertion of NASA's Gateway into a Near Rectilinear Halo Orbit

Various strategies are assessed by which the first two elements of Gateway could recover from missed thrust events during insertion into a Near Rectilinear Halo Orbit (NRHO). Recovery strategies are assessed in terms of their ability to maintain the desired NRHO insertion epoch ad well as their cost in terms of additional time and ∆v required to reach the NRHO. Strategies utilize a 50 kW Solar Electric Propulsion (SEP) system onboard the Power and Propulsion Element (PPE). Recovery solutions are found that, in the event of a missed thrust arc during the Insertion Phase of the Gateway Lunar Transit, deliver the space-craft into the NRHO within three additional revolutions (roughly 21 days) and 80 m/s ∆v.
