Quantum approximate optimization of the long-range Ising model with a trapped-ion quantum simulator

Quantum computers and simulators may offer significant advantages over their classical counterparts, providing insights into quantum many-body systems and possibly improving performance for solving exponentially hard problems, such as optimization and satisfiability. Here, we report the implementation of a low-depth Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (QAOA) using an analog quantum simulator. We estimate the ground-state energy of the Transverse Field Ising Model with long-range interactions with tunable range, and we optimize the corresponding combinatorial classical problem by sampling the QAOA output with high-fidelity, single-shot, individual qubit measurements. We execute the algorithm with both an exhaustive search and closed-loop optimization of the variational parameters, approximating the ground-state energy with up to 40 trapped-ion qubits. We benchmark the experiment with bootstrapping heuristic methods scaling polynomially with the system size. We observe, in agreement with numerics, that the QAOA performance does not degrade significantly as we scale up the system size and that the runtime is approximately independent from the number of qubits. We finally give a comprehensive analysis of the errors occurring in our system, a crucial step in the path forward toward the application of the QAOA to more general problem instances.

Exponential acceleration of macroscopic quantum tunneling in a Floquet Ising model

The exponential suppression of macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) in the number of elements to be reconfigured is an essential element of broken symmetry phases. This suppression is also a core bottleneck in quantum algorithms, such as traversing an energy landscape in optimization, and adiabatic state preparation more generally. In this work, we demonstrate exponential acceleration of MQT through Floquet engineering with the application of a uniform, high frequency transverse drive field. Using the ferromagnetic phase of the transverse field Ising model in one and two dimensions as a prototypical example, we identify three phenomenological regimes as a function of drive strength. For weak drives, the system exhibits exponentially decaying tunneling rates but robust magnetic order; in the crossover regime at intermediate drive strength, we find polynomial decay of tunnelling alongside vanishing magnetic order; and at very strong drive strengths both the Rabi frequency and time-averaged magnetic order are approximately constant with increasing system size. We support these claims with extensive full wavefunction and tensor network numerical simulations, and theoretical analysis. An experimental test of these results presents a technologically important and novel scientific question accessible on NISQ-era quantum computers.

Quantum phase transition dynamics in the two-dimensional transverse-field Ising model

The quantum Kibble-Zurek mechanism (QKZM) predicts universal dynamical behavior near the quantum phase transitions (QPTs). It is now well understood for the one-dimensional quantum matter. Higher-dimensional systems, however, remain a challenge, complicated by the fundamentally different character of the associated QPTs and their underlying conformal field theories. In this work, we take the first steps toward theoretical exploration of the QKZM in two dimensions for interacting quantum matter. We study the dynamical crossing of the QPT in the paradigmatic Ising model by a joint effort of modern state-of-the-art numerical methods, including artificial neural networks and tensor networks. As a central result, we quantify universal QKZM behavior close to the QPT. We also note that, upon traversing further into the ferromagnetic regime, deviations from the QKZM prediction appear. We explain the observed behavior by proposing an extended QKZM taking into account spectral information as well as phase ordering. Our work provides a testing platform for higher-dimensional quantum simulators.

Hysteresis Cycle and Magnetization Behaviors of a Mixed-Spin (7/2, 3/2) Ferrimagnetic Ising Model: Monte Carlo Investigation

The effects of single-ion anisotropies and an external magnetic field on the magnetization of the mixed-spin (7/2, 3/2) ferrimagnetic Ising system are investigated within Monte Carlo simulation. Under certain values of the physical parameters, multiple hysteresis loop behaviors such as double, triple, and quintuple hysteresis cycles have been observed. Particularly, the superparamagnetic phase has been shown. The ground-state phase diagrams are presented.

Origin of mean-field behavior in an elastic Ising model

Simple elastic models of spin-crossover compounds are known empirically to exhibit classical critical behavior. Here, we demonstrate how the long-range interactions responsible for this behavior arise naturally upon integrating out mechanical fluctuations of such a model. A mean-field theory applied to the resulting effective Hamiltonian quantitatively accounts for both thermodynamics and kinetics observed in computer simulations, including a barrier to magnetization reversal that grows extensively with system size. For nanocrystals, which break translational symmetry, a straightforward extension of mean-field theory yields similarly accurate results.

Phase Diagrams of a 2D Dilute Antiferromagnetic Ising Model with Charged Impurities

In this work, we address a topical problem of a competition of charge and spin ordering for high-T cuprates. We have studied a simplified static 2D spin-pseudospin model on a square lattice, which takes into account both conventional antiferromagnetic spin exchange coupling and the on-site and intersite charge correlations in the CuO{sub 2} planes with the on-site Hilbert space reduced to only three effective valent states. We compared an analytical results for the ground state and for the temperature phase diagrams obtained in a mean field approximation and a large amount of the classical Monte Carlo calculations. Numerical results show that homogeneous ground state antiferromagnetic solutions found in a mean field approximation are unstable for the “strong” exchange limit with respect to phase separation with the charge and spin subsystems behaving like immiscible quantum liquids. We found an analytical expression for critical temperature of phase separation and performed the comparison with the Monte Carlo results.

Biased degenerate ground-state sampling of small Ising models with converged quantum approximate optimization algorithm

The quantum alternating operator ansatz, a generalization of the quantum approximate optimization algorithm (QAOA), is a quantum algorithm used for approximately solving combinatorial optimization problems. QAOA typically uses the transverse field mixer as the driving Hamiltonian. One of the interesting properties of the transverse field driving Hamiltonian is that it results in nonuniform sampling of degenerate ground states of optimization problems. In this study, we numerically examine the fair sampling properties of the transverse field mixer QAOA, and Grover mixer QAOA (GM-QAOA), which provides theoretical guarantees of fair sampling of degenerate optimal solutions, up to a large enough p such that the mean expectation value converges to an optimal approximation ratio of 1. This comparison is performed with high-quality heuristically computed, but not necessarily optimal, QAOA angles, which give strictly monotonically improving solution quality as p increases. These angles are computed using the Julia based numerical simulation software JuliQAOA. Fair sampling of degenerate ground states is quantified using the Shannon entropy of the ground-state amplitudes distribution. The fair sampling properties are reported on several quantum signature Hamiltonians from previous quantum annealing fair sampling studies. Small random fully connected spin glasses are shown, which exhibit exponential suppression of some degenerate ground states with transverse field mixer QAOA. The transverse field mixer QAOA simulations show that some problem instances clearly saturate the Shannon entropy of 0 with a maximally biased distribution that occurs when the learning converges to an approximation ratio of 1 while other problem instances never deviate from a maximum Shannon entropy (uniform distribution) at any p step. Bootstrapping the 3d Ising model at finite temperature

We estimate thermal one-point functions in the 3d Ising CFT using the operator product expansion (OPE) and the Kubo-Martin-Schwinger (KMS) condition. Several operator dimensions and OPE coefficients of the theory are known from the numerical bootstrap for flat-space four-point functions. Taking this data as input, we use a thermal Lorentzian inversion formula to compute thermal one-point coefficients of the first few Regge trajectories in terms of a small number of unknown parameters. We approximately determine the unknown parameters by imposing the KMS condition on the two-point functions (σσ) and (ϵϵ). As a result, we estimate the one-point functions of the lowest-dimension $\mathbb{Z}_2$-even scalar ϵ and the stress energy tensor T μν . Our result for (σσ) at finite-temperature agrees with Monte-Carlo simulations within a few percent, inside the radius of convergence of the OPE.

Topological order in matrix Ising models

We study a family of models for an N_1 \times N_2 N 1 × N 2 matrix worth of Ising spins S_{aB} S a B . In the large N_i N i limit we show that the spins soften, so that the partition function is described by a bosonic matrix integral with a single ‘spherical’ constraint. In this way we generalize the results of to a wide class of Ising Hamiltonians with O(N_1,\mathbb{Z})\times O(N_2,\mathbb{Z}) O ( N 1 , ℤ ) × O ( N 2 , ℤ ) symmetry. The models can undergo topological large N N phase transitions in which the thermal expectation value of the distribution of singular values of the matrix S_{aB} S a B becomes disconnected. This topological transition competes with low temperature glassy and magnetically ordered phases.

Local entanglement and confinement transitions in the random transverse-field Ising model on the pyrochlore lattice

We use numerical linked cluster expansions (NLC) and exact diagonalization to study confinement transitions out of the quantum spin liquid phase in the pyrochlore-lattice Ising antiferromagnet with random transverse fields. We calculate entanglement entropies associated with local regions defined by single tetrahedron to observe these transitions. The randomness-induced confinement transition is marked by a sharp reduction in the local entanglement and a concomitant increase in Ising correlations. In NLC, it is studied through the destruction of loop resonances due to random transverse-fields. As a result, the confining phase is characterized by a distribution of local entanglement entropies, which persists to large random fields.
