Development and application of linear and nonlinear methods for interpretation of lightning strikes to in-flight aircraft

Since 1980, NASA has been collecting direct strike lightning data by flying an instrumented F-106B aircraft into thunderstorms. The continuing effort to interpret the measured data is reported here. Both linear and nonlinear finite difference modeling techniques are applied to the problem of lightning triggered by an aircraft in a thunderstorm. Five different aircraft are analyzed to determine the effect of aircraft size and shape on lightning triggering. The effect of lightning channel impedance on aircraft response is investigated. The particle environment in thunderstorms and electric field enhancements by typical ice particles is also investigated.

[STS-48 Post Flight Press Conference]

The flight crew of the STS-48 Space Shuttle Discovery's 13th Flight (Cmdr. J. O. Creighton, Pilot Ken Reightler, MS Charles Gemar, MS James Buchli, and MS Mark Brown) review their mission and discuss their in-flight activities and experiments in this video. The primary goal of this mission was the deployment of the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS). Secondary payloads included: the Mid-Deck Zero Gravity Experiment (MODE) that showed how fluids in microgravity and in in-orbit conditions respond to different influences (dynamics and harmonic analysis) and the Extended Duration Orbiter physiological tests of astronaut heat and lung functions. Through these experiments, information useful in the construction and design of the proposed Space Station is hoped to be gained. Earth views included: the Aurora Borealis (B/W); polar region ice packs and caps; the Nile River (at night); the Galapagos Islands, and Earth lightning shots. A night landing is shown.

MIZEX-WEST NASA CV-990 flight report

As part of the Bering Sea marginal ice zone winter experiment (MIZEX-WEST), the CV-990 airborne laboratory was flown to assess the potential of using an extended range of wavelengths for improving passive microwave sea ice observations from spacecraft and second to provide an overview of the MIZ for large-scale processes studies. The aircraft was equipped with both imaging and fixed-beam, dual-polarized passive microwave radiometers ranging from 1.5 millimeter to 3 centimeter wavelengths. Visual, photographic, and thermal (10.7 micron) infrared surface observations were also made from the aircraft to complement the microwave measurements. The flight operations and in-flight observations are discussed and each flight is summarized including flight objective and instrument status. Preliminary mosaic images obtained with the ESMR imager, Nimbus-7 orbits over the Bering Sea, ice observations obtained by an ice observer on board, and composite maps of the general ice conditions for the month of February are also presented.
