Photochemically Triggered Para-Hydrogen-Induced Polarization in a Diplatinum Trihydride Complex

Transition metal complexes containing platinum(II) are of substantial interest for their rich photophysics, biomedical applications, and catalytic function. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra of the spin-1/2 isotope, 195Pt, offer detailed insights into the molecular structures of closed-shell Pt(II) complexes, including solvent effects. However, the sensitivity of 195Pt NMR is mediocre, and its NMR spectra are typically complex. As a result, 1H NMR spectra are used as the primary characterization tool for Pt(II)-based molecules, relying on J-coupling to the 195Pt nucleus to provide structural information from the resulting satellite peaks. In efforts to significantly improve the information content from 1H NMR spectroscopy in a Pt(II)-containing molecule, we utilize [Pt2H2(μ-H)(μ-dppm)2]PF6, where dppm is bis(diphenylphosphino)methane, and leverage its established photoactivity with UV light and H2 for para-hydrogen-induced polarization (PHIP) to enhance the resultant NMR signals, revealing numerous 195Pt J-couplings. Moreover, we investigate direct solvent hyperpolarization effects, as well as the indirect effects of solvent on the various observed J-coupling constants in the Pt species, demonstrating correlations with both Lewis basicity and dielectric constant.

Impacts of vacancy-induced polarization and distortion on diffusion in Solid Electrolyte Li 3 OCl

We report that Lithium-rich oxychloride antiperovskites are promising solid electrolytes for enabling next-generation batteries. Here, we report a comprehensive study varying Li + concentrations in Li 3 OCl using ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. The simulations accurately capture the complex interactions between Li + vacancies (V$^'_{Li}$), the dominant mobile species in Li 3 OCl. The V$^'_{Li}$ polarize and distort the host lattice, inducing additional non-vacancy-mediated diffusion mechanisms and correlated diffusion events that reduce the activation energy barrier at concentrations as low as 1.5% V$^'_{Li}$. Our analyses of discretized diffusion events in both space and time illustrate the critical interplay between correlated dynamics, polarization and local distortion in promoting ionic conductivity in Li 3 OCl.

Regularized Monte-Carlo calculations of the optical polarization induced by scattering in X-ray binaries

The results of regularized Monte Carlo calculations of the optical polarization Stokes parameters expected as a result of scattering from gas streams or accretion wakes in close binary systems whose properties resemble those of X-ray binaries are presented. The physical processes occurring in the system are represented by a model which follows a selected sample of individual photon paths from each emitting element on the surface of the primary to the photon's detection at earth. The result represents the variations in the intensity from each individual emitting element caused by the effects of limb darkening, gravity darkening, and variation in the projected area of the emitting element as seen from the scattering element.

ANGPTL4 regulates CD163 expression and Kuppfer cell polarization induced cirrhosis via TLR4/NF-κB pathway

Angiopoietin like 4 (ANGPTL4) has been proved to play an important role in lipid and glucose metabolism disorders and related cardiovascular diseases, but its role in the formation of cirrhosis still needs to be further explored. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the role of ANGPTL4 in the development of liver cirrhosis and its mechanism, as well as its effect on Kupffer cell polarization and hepatic stellate cell activation. The ELISA and RT-qPCR assay were used to detect the content of ANGPTL4 in serum and mRNA expression in cells and tissues respectively. The expression of ANGPTL4, Arg1 and Mrc2 in Kupffer cells was measured by Western blot. The percentage of CD163{sup +} and CD206{sup +} cells was measured by flow cytometry. Mice cirrhosis model was established, and the expression of ANGPTL4 was interfered by injecting sh-ANGPTL4 lentiviral vector into caudal vein. The results revealed that ANGPTL4 was significantly up-regulated in liver cirrhosis patients and HBV induced liver injury cell models. Further studies found that interference with ANGPTL4 regulated CD163 and inhibited the polarization and proinflammatory effects of KCsas well as inhibited the activation of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) and fibrosis. More importantly, Interference with ANGPTL4 inhibits the progression of liver cirrhosis in mice. What's more, TLR4/NF-κB pathway was involved in the molecular mechanism of ANGPTL4 on Kupffer cells and hepatic stellate cells. It is suggested that the mechanism of sh-ANGPTL4 suppressing the polarization of KCs and the activation of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) is to regulate the TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathways.

Direct observation of polarization-induced two-dimensional electron/hole gases at ferroelectric-insulator interface

Abstract Two-dimensional electron gas or hole gas (2DEG or 2DHG) and their functionalities at artificial heterostructure interfaces have attracted extensive attention in recent years. Many theoretical calculations and recent experimental studies have shown the formation of alternating 2DEG and 2DHG at ferroelectric/insulator interfaces, such as BiFeO 3 /TbScO 3 , depending on the different polarization states. However, a direct observation based on the local charge distribution at the BiFeO 3 /TbScO 3 interface has yet to be explored. Herein we demonstrate the direct observation of 2DHG and 2DEG at BiFeO 3 /TbScO 3 interface using four-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy and Bader charge analysis. The results show that the measured charge state of each Fe/O columns at the interface undergoes a significant increase/reduction for the polarization state pointing away/toward the interface, indicating the existence of 2DHG/2DEG. This method opens up a path of directly observing charge at atomic scale and provides new insights into the design of future electronic nanodevices.

Time-lapse electrical resistivity and induced polarization monitoring of a simulated ecosystem-scale coastal flooding experiment

Accurate estimation of the spatio-temporal variation in soil saturation and salt concentration is valuable for calibrating and evaluating Earth system models as well as detecting important eco-hydrological interactions. Such representative models play a vital role in investigating the stability of ecosystems facing changing hydrologic disturbance regimes. Ecosystem-scale field experiments are a useful way to capture hydrological disturbance and gain a deeper understanding of the complex mechanisms driving environmental changes. However, previous studies have not explored the use of quantitative imaging at a large spatial scale to reproduce breakthrough curves and inform system response and recovery following hydrologic disturbance events. Therefore, in this study, non-invasive geophysical methods were used to capture the spatio-temporal variation in subsurface saturation and salt concentrations during an ecosystem-scale coastal forest flooding experiment.

Polarization near dislocation cores in SrTiO 3 single crystals: The role of flexoelectricity

Spontaneous polarization as large as ~28 μC/cm 2 was recently observed around the dislocation cores in non-polar SrTiO 3 bulk crystals, and its origin was attributed to the flexoelectric effect, i.e., polarization induced by strain gradients. However, the roles of flexoelectricity, relative to other electromechanical contributions, and the nature of dislocations, i.e., edge vs screw dislocations in the induced polarization, are not well understood. In this work, we study the role of flexoelectricity in inducing polarization around three types of dislocation cores in SrTiO 3 : b= a(100) edge dislocation, b= a(110) edge dislocation, and b= a(010) screw dislocation, where b is the Burgers vector. For the edge dislocations, polarization can be induced by electrostriction alone, while flexoelectricity is essential for stabilizing the symmetric polarization pattern. The shear component of the flexoelectric tensor has a dominant effect on the magnitude and spatial distribution of the flexoelectric polarization. In contrast, no polarization is induced around the b= a(010) screw dislocation through either electrostriction or flexoelectricity. Finally, our findings provide an in-depth understanding of the role of flexoelectricity in inducing polarization around dislocation cores and offer insights into the defect engineering of dielectric/ferroelectric materials.
