Changes of Magnetism in a Magnetic Insulator due to Proximity to a Topological Insulator

We report here the modification of magnetism in a magnetic insulator Y 3 Fe 5 O 12 thin film by topological surface states (TSS) in an adjacent topological insulator Bi 2 Se 3 thin film. Ferromagnetic resonance measurements show that the TSS in Bi2Se3 produces a perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, results in a decrease in the gyromagnetic ratio, and enhances the damping in Y 3 Fe 5 O 12 . Such TSS-induced changes become more pronounced as the temperature decreases from 300 to 50 K. These results suggest a completely new approach for control of magnetism in magnetic thin films.

Spatiotemporal characterization of the field-induced insulator-to-metal transition

Watching a metal filament grow Resistive switching is a process in which the electrical resistance of a sample changes abruptly in response to a voltage pulse, often by orders of magnitude. This process is at the heart of many neuromorphic computing approaches but visualizing it in both space and time is tricky. del Valle et al . monitored the resistive switching in three different vanadium oxide compounds by measuring time- and space-resolved optical reflectivity (see the Perspective by Hilgenkamp and Gao). A characteristic conducting filament was quickly nucleated on the inhomogeneities in the sample and then propagated due to Joule heating. —JS

Crystalline materials for quantum computing: Semiconductor heterostructures and topological insulators exemplars

Abstract High-purity crystalline solid-state materials play an essential role in various technologies for quantum information processing, from qubits based on spins to topological states. New and improved crystalline materials emerge each year and continue to drive new results in experimental quantum science. This article summarizes the opportunities for a selected class of crystalline materials for qubit technologies based on spins and topological states and the challenges associated with their fabrication. We start by describing semiconductor heterostructures for spin qubits in gate-defined quantum dots and benchmark GaAs, Si, and Ge, the three platforms that demonstrated two-qubit logic. We then examine novel topologically nontrivial materials and structures that might be incorporated into superconducting devices to create topological qubits. We review topological insulator thin films and move onto topological crystalline materials, such as PbSnTe, and its integration with Josephson junctions. We discuss advances in novel and specialized fabrication and characterization techniques to enable these. We conclude by identifying the most promising directions where advances in these material systems will enable progress in qubit technology.

Method and apparatus for an insulating glazing unit and compliant seal for an insulating glazing unit

A vacuum insulating glazing unit (VIGU) comprises two or more glass lites (panes) spaced apart from one another and hermetically bonded to an edge seal assembly therebetween. The resulting cavity between the lites is evacuated to create at least one insulating vacuum cavity within which are disposed a plurality of stand-off members to maintain separation between the lites. The edge seal assembly is preferably compliant in the longitudinal (i.e., edgewise) direction to allow longitudinal relative motion between the two lites (e.g., from thermal expansion). The longitudinal compliance may be obtained by imprinting a three-dimensional pattern into the edge seal material. The edge seal assembly is preferably bonded to the lites with a first bond portion that is hermetic and a second bond portion that is load-resistant. Methods for producing VIGUs and/or compliant edge seal assemblies and VIGU and edge seal apparatus are disclosed.

Presynthetic Redox Gated Metal-to-Insulator Transition and Photothermoelectric Properties in Nickel Tetrathiafulvalene-Tetrathiolate Coordination Polymers

Photothermoelectric (PTE) materials are promising candidates for solar energy harvesting and photodetection applications, especially for near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths. Although the processability and tunability of organic materials are highly advantageous, examples of organic PTE materials are comparatively rare and their PTE performance is typically limited by poor photothermal (PT) conversion. Here, we report the use of redox-active Sn complexes of tetrathiafulvalene-tetrathiolate (TTFtt) as transmetalating agents for the synthesis of presynthetically redox tuned NiTTFtt materials. Unlike the neutral material NiTTFtt, which exhibits n-type glassy-metallic conductivity, the reduced materials Li 1.2 Ni 0.4 [NiTTFtt] and [Li(THF) 1.5 ] 1.2 Ni 0.4 [NiTTFtt] (THF = tetrahydrofuran) display physical characteristics more consistent with p-type semiconductors. The broad spectral absorption and electrically conducting nature of these TTFtt-based materials enable highly efficient NIR-thermal conversion and good PTE performance. Furthermore, in contrast to conventional PTE composites, these NiTTFtt coordination polymers are notable as single-component PTE materials. As a result, the presynthetically tuned metal-to-insulator transition in these NiTTFtt systems directly modulates their PT and PTE properties.

Imaging orbital ferromagnetism in a moiré Chern insulator

Capturing exotic magnetism Ferromagnetism is associated with the breaking of time-reversal symmetry, most frequently by the spin degree of freedom. Although the orbital motion of electrons can also contribute to ferromagnetism, in most materials, it is small relative to the spin contribution. Tschirhart et al. showed that the reverse is true in an unusual magnetic state hosted by twisted bilayer graphene. Their scanning magnetometry measurements were consistent with ferromagnetism of predominantly orbital origin. Science , abd3190, this issue p. 1323

Pressure-Induced Insulator–Metal Transition in Two-Dimensional Mott Insulator NiPS 3

The pressure-induced insulator to metal transition (IMT) of layered magnetic nickel phosphorous tri-sulfide NiPS 3 was studied in-situ under quasi-uniaxial conditions by means of electrical resistance (R) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements. This sluggish transition is shown to occur at 35 GPa. Transport measurements show no evidence of superconductivity to the lowest measured temperature (~2 K). The structure results presented here differ from earlier in-situ work that subjected the sample to a different pressure state, suggesting that in NiPS 3 the phase stability fields are highly dependent on strain. Furthermore, it is suggested that careful control of the strain is essential when studying the electronic and magnetic properties of layered van der Waals solids.

Vacuum insulated glazing, valve, flexible seal, and method for making vacuum insulated glazing

A vacuum insulated glazing includes first and second spaced apart glass panes having perimeter portions defining a vacuum space between the glass panes. A vacuum valve is positioned at the perimeter portions of the glass panes and includes a valve body extending between the perimeter portions of the glass panes, and having first and second ends and a fluid conduit extending from the first end to the second end of the valve body and in fluid communication with the vacuum space. A one-way valve in the fluid conduit permits fluid flow from the vacuum space, and prevents fluid flow into the vacuum space. A suction fitting is provided for connecting the valve body to a suction device. An end seal between the perimeter portions of the glass panes is provided for hermetically sealing the vacuum space. A valve for a VIG and a method of making a VIG are also disclosed.
