Interleaved bond frustration in a triangular lattice antiferromagnet

Frustration of long-range order via lattice geometry amplifies fluctuations and generates ground states that are highly sensitive to perturbations. Traditionally, geometric frustration is used to engineer unconventional magnetic states; however, the charge degree of freedom and bond order can be similarly frustrated. Finding materials that host both frustrated magnetic and bond networks holds promise for engineering structural and magnetic states with the potential of coupling to one another via either magnetic or strain fields. Here we identify an unusual instance of this coexistence in the triangular lattice antiferromagnets LnCd 3 P 3 (Ln = lanthanides). These compounds feature two-dimensional planes of unique trigonal planar CdP 3 units with an underlying bond instability that is frustrated via emergent kagome ice correlations. This bond instability is interleaved in between layers of frustrated magnetic moments. Furthermore, our results establish LnCd 3 P 3 as a rare materials class in which frustrated magnetism is embedded within a dopable semiconductor with a frustrated bond order instability.

Interleaved dual-species arrays of single atoms using a passive optical element and one trapping laser

We demonstrate trapping of individual rubidium (Rb) and cesium (Cs) atoms in an interleaved array of bright tweezers and dark bottle-beam traps, using a microfabricated optical element illuminated by a single-laser beam and a 4f system with spatial filtering. Our approach exploits the opposite-sign dynamic polarizabilities of Rb and Cs, ensuring that each species is exclusively trapped in either bright or dark sites. The passive optical mask creates optimal trap depths for both species using three transmittance levels while minimizing the optical phase difference, implemented using a variable-thickness absorbing layer of amorphous germanium. This trapping architecture achieves atom loading rates close to 50% while reducing system complexity compared to conventional methods using active optoelectronic components and/or multiple-laser wavelengths.

Capacity degradation due to interleaving and multiplexing

The capacity of an M-ary channel with N-ary coding is computed. It is found that the capacity of a very noisy channel is reduced by the factor (N-1)(log M)/(M-1)(log N). The results are applied to channels with noncoherent multifrequency shift keying and to concatenation of codes and interleaving.

Expanded interleaved solid-state memory for a wide bandwidth transient waveform recorder

An interleaved, solid state expanded memory for a 100 MHz bandwidth waveform recorder is described. The memory development resulted in a significant increase in the storage capacity of a commercially available recorder. The motivation for the memory expansion of the waveform recorder, which is used to support in-flight measurement of the electromagnetic characteristics of lightning discharges, was the need for a significantly longer data window than that provided by the commercially available unit. The expanded recorder provides a data window that is 128 times longer than the commercial unit, while maintaining the same time resolution, by increasing the storage capacity from 1024 to 131 072 data samples. The expanded unit operates at sample periods as small as 10 ns. Sampling once every 10 ns, the commercial unit records for about 10 microseconds before the memory is filled, whereas, the expanded unit records for about 1300 microseconds. A photo of the expanded waveform recorder is shown.

Interleaving device

An interleaving device for processing energy signals between various logic devices has a first number of spaced energy carrying layer mateials. Each of the first layer materials has a number of juxtaposed conduits passing energy signals through which are passed. Each of the conduits has a longitudinal axis substantially parallel to a diagonal of each of the first layers. A second group of energy carrying materials is arranged between adjacent ones of the spaced first layer materials. Each of the second layer materials has a number of juxtaposed conduits through which the energy signals are also passed. Each of the conduits in the second layer has a longitudinal axis substantially parallel to a diagonal of each of the second layer materials and substantially perpendicular to the axes of the conduits of the first layer materials.

A Simulation System for Validating the Analytical Prediction of Performance of the Convolutional Encoded and Symbol Interleaved TDRSS S-band Return Link Service in a Pulsed RFI Environment

A hardware integrated convolutional coding/symbol interleaving and integrated symbol deinterleaving/Viterbi decoding simulation system is described. Validation on the system of the performance of the TDRSS S-band return link with BPSK modulation, operating in a pulsed RFI environment is included. The system consists of three components, the Fast Linkabit Error Rate Tester (FLERT), the Transition Probability Generator (TPG), and a modified LV7017B which includes rate 1/3 capability as well as a periodic interleaver/deinterleaver. Operating and maintenance manuals for each of these units are included.

A VLSI single chip (255,223) Reed-Solomon encoder with interleaver

A single-chip implementation of a Reed-Solomon encoder with interleaving capability is described. The code used was adapted by the CCSDS (Consulative Committee on Space Data Systems). It forms the outer code of the NASA standard concatenated coding system which includes a convolutional inner code of rate 1/2 and constraint length 7. The architecture, leading to this single VLSI chip design, makes use of a bit-serial finite field multiplication algorithm due to E.R. Berlekamp.

The use of interleaving for reducing radio loss in convolutionally coded systems

The use of interleaving after convolutional coding and deinterleaving before Viterbi decoding is proposed. This effectively reduces radio loss at low-loop Signal to Noise Ratios (SNRs) by several decibels and at high-loop SNRs by a few tenths of a decibel. Performance of the coded system can further be enhanced if the modulation index is optimized for this system. This will correspond to a reduction of bit SNR at a certain bit error rate for the overall system. The introduction of interleaving/deinterleaving into communication systems designed for future deep space missions does not substantially complicate their hardware design or increase their system cost.

Interleaving Would Enhance Trellis-Coded Modulation

Interleaving of symbols transmitted via trellis-coded modulation, together with deinterleaving at receiver, reduces "radio" or "noisy-reference" loss encountered in reception. This loss increase in bit-error rate (or, equivalently, decrease in effective signal-to-noise ratio), caused by phase error between received signal and locally generated carrier reference signal used to demodulate received signal.

An interleave retrieval method for oversampled limb scans

Rodgers presents a general approach for error analysis of retrievals based on a linearization of the retrieval problem. This approach allows calculation of retrieval error from uncertainties in the input radiances and in each of the forward radiance model parameters. These terms are weighted according to the sensitivity of the retrieval to each of them. We use this framework to describe the results of an error analysis performed on HALOE data. This paper will show the effect of using over sampled profile data and an interleave retrieval technique by application of formal error analysis.

Software Modules for the Proximity-1 Space Link Interleaved Time Synchronization (PITS) Protocol

The Proximity-1 Space Link Interleaved Time Synchronization (PITS) protocol provides time distribution and synchronization services for space systems. A software prototype implementation of the PITS algorithm has been developed that also provides the test harness to evaluate the key functionalities of PITS with simulated data source and sink. PITS integrates time synchronization functionality into the link layer of the CCSDS Proximity-1 Space Link Protocol. The software prototype implements the network packet format, data structures, and transmit- and receive-timestamp function for a time server and a client. The software also simulates the transmit and receive-time stamp exchanges via UDP (User Datagram Protocol) socket between a time server and a time client, and produces relative time offsets and delay estimates.

Interleaved array antenna technology development

This is the third phase of a program to establish an antenna concept for shuttle and free flying spacecraft earth resources experiments using Synthetic Aperture Radar. The feasibility of a plated graphite epoxy waveguide for a space antenna was evaluated. A quantity of flat panels and waveguides were developed, procured, and tested for electrical and mechanical properties. In addition, processes for the assembly of a unique waveguide array were investigated. Finally, trades between various configurations that would allow elevation (range) electronic scanning and that would minimize feed complexity for various RF bandwidths were made.
