Lithium and boron isotopic compositions of olivine in chondrules from carbonaceous and ordinary chondrite meteorites: Implications for the origin of solar 11 B/ 10 B ratio

We report the origin of solar 11 B/ 10 B ratio ~4 remains an open question. It has been thought that a significant portion of boron in the Solar System was derived from continuous spallation nucleosynthesis during interactions between Galactic Cosmic Rays and C—N—O nuclei in the interstellar medium. However, because GCR-produced boron is characterized by 11 B/ 10 B ~2.5, an endmember with 11 B/ 10 B > 4 is required to account for the solar 11 B/ 10 B ratio. Two leading hypotheses for the sources of 11 B-rich components include low energy spallation in the Sun’s parental molecular cloud and the neutrino process during the supernova explosions. In this study, lithium and boron elemental and isotopic compositions of seven porphyritic olivine chondrules and one isolated olivine crystal from four meteorites (Allende, Yamato 81020, Asuka 12236, and QUE 97008) were determined in-situ to help constrain which of the two nucleosynthetic mechanisms has most likely supplied the forming Solar System with extra 11 B. Apparent isotopic variations in Li/Si, B/Si, δ 7 Li and δ 11 B were found in chondrule olivine crystals, but only three chondrules exhibit statistically resolved δ 11 B heterogeneities. Using these three chondrules as a basis for discussion, we evaluated the processes that could potentially cause elemental and isotopic variations of Li and B. We argue that the data can be best understood in the context of condensation of lithium-boron-rich material onto chondrule precursors in (an) initially heterogeneous gaseous reservoir(s), which could be realized if the Solar System derived 11 B-rich components from a supernova or supernovae.

Water Vapor Isotopic Composition from the ARM ENA Site, March 2018-March 2019

Humidity and water vapor δD and δ18O measurements were collected for a period of one year (March 1, 2018 to February 28, 2019) at the Department of Energy Atmospheric Radiation Measurement facility on Graciosa Island, Azores. Continuous in-situ measurements were collected in the boundary layer using a Los Gatos Research Triple Water Vapor Isotope Analyzer. Stable Isotope measurements were corrected for humidity-induced bias, calibrated to international standards, accounted for time-drift, and are presented as 3-hour averages.

Characterization of actinide abundances and isotopic compositions by HR-ICP-MS

In this report, we present actinide isotopic and elemental data from fallout melt glass using high resolution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (HR-ICP-MS). This is an analytical technique that requires minimal sample preparation. These data are directly compared to the results of high precision isotopic analyses and elemental assay by multi-collector (MC-) ICP-MS, which requires lengthy sample processing involving spiking and purifying aliquots of individual elements. The comparison shows broad overlap between the results of the two techniques. Thus, although the data obtained by HR-ICP-MS is of significantly lower precision, it is a viable method to obtain actinide elemental and isotopic data on a more rapid timeframe than traditional high-precision techniques.

Developing Methodology to Determine Pu Isotopic Composition by Laser Ablation MC-ICP-MS

This project will develop methodology to analyze the Pu isotope ratio in mixed U-Pu particles by laser ablation MC-ICP-MS. This will involve: 1) testing and validation of the Pu analytical method using mixed U-Pu solutions and Pu doped glasses, 2) isotopic analysis of mixed U-Pu particles by laser ablation MC-ICP-MS, and 3) continued development of the R-based data reduction program. Details regarding the analytical method development and results of QC testing will be output as a deliverable to the IAEA, along with an updated version of the LARA data reduction software.

Lead isotopic compositions of airborne particulates collected from snow and from dry deposition in the East River Watershed, Colorado and at the Southern Sierra Critical Zone Observatory, California

The data set consists of lead (Pb) isotopic ratios (206Pb/207Pb and 208Pb/207Pb, as well as 206Pb/204Pb, 207Pb/204Pb, 208Pb/204Pb) for particulate samples collected from snow and dry deposition. This was part of a study (O’Day et al. 2020) that was looking at the speciation of phosphorous in splits of these samples to evaluate the flux and bio-availability of phosphorous to the mountain sites in the study. The Pb isotopic data allow sourcing of long-range transported Pb, specifically the fraction of Pb sourced in Asia, and so a comparison of the relative distances of PM sources between the high and low elevation sites. Samples were collected at the East River Watershed, CO (dry deposition collected over Sept.-Oct. 2016, show sampling winter 2017) and at the Southern Sierra Critical Zone Observatory (dry deposition collected over Sept-Nov 2016, July-Sept 2017, June-July 2017). The data includes Pb concentration data, as well as calculated fraction of the Pb sourced in Asia. This data set was published in part in O’Day et al. (2020) Phosphorus Speciation in Atmospherically Deposited Particulate Matter and Implications for Terrestrial Ecosystem Productivity. ES&T, https://dx.doi.org/10.1021/acs.est.9b06150

The Solar System calcium isotopic composition inferred from Ryugu samples

The Hayabusa2 spacecraft has returned samples from the Cb-type asteroid (162173) Ryugu to Earth. Previous petrological and chemical analyses support a close link between Ryugu and CI chondrites that are presumed to be chemically the most primitive meteorites with a solar-like composition. However, Ryugu samples are highly enriched in Ca compared to typical CI chondrites. To identify the cause of this discrepancy, here we report stable Ca isotopic data (expressed as δ 44/40 Ca SRM915a ) for returned Ryugu samples collected from two sites. We found that samples from both sites have similar δ 44/40 Ca SRM915a (0.58 ± 0.03 ‰ and 0.55 ± 0.08 ‰, 2 s.d.) that fall within the range defined by CIs. This isotopic similarity suggests that the Ca budget of CIs and Ryugu samples is dominated by carbonates, and the variably higher Ca contents in Ryugu samples are due to the abundant carbonates. Precipitation of carbonates on Ryugu likely coincided with a major episode of aqueous activity dated to have occurred ~5 Myr after Solar System formation. Based on the pristine Ryugu samples, the average δ 44/40 Ca SRM915a of the Solar System is defined to be 0.57 ± 0.04 ‰ (2 s.d.).

Triple oxygen and hydrogen stable isotope composition of water in Murchison carbonaceous chondrite accessed by thermogravimetry-enabled laser spectroscopy

For this work, we have developed the capability to measure 17 O/ 16 O in H 2 O and OH - of hydrous minerals by a technique using thermogravimetric analysis coupled with isotope ratio infrared spectroscopy (TGA-IRIS) on a suite of liquid water standards, terrestrial mineral standards, multi-mineral synthetic mixtures of terrestrial samples, and Murchison carbonaceous chondrite. This 17 O/ 16 O analytical capability is combined with the previously developed TGA-IRIS capability of 18 O/ 16 O, which enables us to calculate Δ `17 O values. Additionally, we have made 2 H/ 1 H measurements by TGA-IRIS on the suite of materials. Analyses of 328 standard water samples sealed into silver tubes (0.25 μL, 174 VSMOW and 154 GISP) analyzed over the course of three years yielded δ 18 O values by TGA-IRIS with precision of ±0.30 ‰, δ 17 O of ±0.24 ‰, Δ `17 O of ±0.126 ‰, and δ 2 H ± 7.5 ‰ (± 1 Std. Dev.). TGA-IRIS analyses of a suite of hydrous minerals (oxy-hydroxide, mica, serpentines, sulfide, phyllosillicates) yields similar precision. TGA-IRIS analyses of the CM2 carbonaceous chondrite Murchison resulted in δ 18 O, δ 17 O, Δ `17 O, and δ 2 H values of the H 2 O and/or OH - from its hydrous minerals. Δ `17 O values of Murchison H 2 O range from 1.034 ‰ at 350 °C, to -0.368 ‰ at 650 °C, to -1.75 ‰ at 850 °C. TGA-IRIS can generate Δ `17 O values of H 2 O and/or OH - in hydrous materials that are well within the precision needed for the analysis of meteoritic samples, as well as samples returned from asteroids, such as Ryugu and Bennu.
