Verification study of xRAGE’s multi-ion viscosity model

This report on the adequacy of the plasma viscosity model implemented in LANL’s ASC program code, xRAGE is organized as follows. Section I provides a brief introduction on the kinetic theory which underpins plasma viscosity, and Section II describes how plasma kinetic theory can be used to calculate plasma viscosity coefficients accurate within the hydrodynamic limit. Section III describes the existing model for calculating the plasma viscosity coefficient in xRAGE. Next, Section IV shows tests of the xRAGE viscosity model against established hydrodynamic theory in the case of binary and trinary plasma mixtures.

A kinetic model of friction in strongly coupled strongly magnetized plasmas

Plasmas that are strongly magnetized in the sense that the gyrofrequency exceeds the plasma frequency exhibit novel transport properties that are not well understood. As a representative example, we compute the friction force acting on a massive test charge moving through a strongly coupled and strongly magnetized one-component plasma using a generalized Boltzmann kinetic theory. Recent works studying the weakly coupled regime have shown that strong magnetization leads to a transverse component of the friction force that is perpendicular to both the Lorentz force and velocity of the test charge, in addition to the stopping power component aligned antiparallel to the velocity. Recent molecular dynamics simulations have also shown that strong Coulomb coupling in addition to strong magnetization gives rise to a third component of the friction force in the direction of the Lorentz force. Here, we show that the generalized Boltzmann kinetic theory captures these effects and generally agrees well with the molecular dynamics simulations over a broad range of Coulomb coupling and magnetization strength regimes. The theory is also used to show that the “gyro” component of the friction in the direction of the Lorentz force arises due to asymmetries associated with gyromotion during short-range collisions. Computing the average motion of the test charge through the background plasma, the transverse force is found to strongly influence the trajectory by changing the gyroradius and the gyrofriction force is found to slightly change the gyrofrequency of the test charge resulting in a phase shift.

Improved single-particle phase-space distributions for viscous fluid dynamic models of relativistic heavy ion collisions

Comparison of hydrodynamic calculations with experimental data inevitably requires a model for converting the fluid to particles. For shear viscous fluids, several different conversion models have been proposed, such as the quadratic Grad corrections, the Strickland-Romatschke (SR) ansatz, self-consistent shear corrections from linearized kinetic theory, or corrections from the relaxation time approach. We show, via comparison to nonlinear 2 → 2 kinetic theory evolution, that even for low specific shear viscosities 0.03 ≲ $\textit{η/s}$ ≲ 0.2 , these four models have varying accuracy and still significant errors in reproducing particle phase space densities from hydrodynamic fields. Moreover, we demonstrate that the overall reconstruction error of additive shear viscous $f = f_{eq} + δf$ models dramatically reduces by up to one order of magnitude, if one ensures through exponentiation that $\textit{f}$ is always positive. Further, we also illustrate how even more accurate viscous $\textit{δf}$ models can be constructed by incorporating the first time derivatives of hydrodynamic fields to account for the past evolution of the system. Such time derivatives are readily available in hydrodynamic simulations, though usually not included in the output. Though our comparisons are limited to a one-component massless system undergoing a (0 + 1)-dimensional (0 + 1D) longitudinal boost-invariant expansion, we expect that the improved models will be useful in 2 + 1D and 3 + 1D hydrodynamic studies as well.

Expansion-driven Weibel instability in magnetohydrodynamics: Linear theory for static systems

The Weibel dispersion relation is obtained in the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) approximation by including a tensor expression for temperature. MHD gives an upper cutoff wavenumber for Weibel growth identical to kinetic theory if the electron drift velocity is included in the evolution of the electron temperature. MHD overestimates growth rates compared to kinetic theory and gives maximum growth at larger wavenumbers, but it only leads to divergent results as temperature anisotropy tends to infinity. Thermal conduction in MHD lowers the growth rates and shifts maximum growth to smaller wavenumbers, but flux-limited or nonlocal thermal conduction is found to significantly limit these effects. The results are used as a first step in evaluating the potential of MHD to simulate expansion-driven Weibel instability, which occurs due to the temperature tensor only cooling in the direction of expansion. Finally, the small temperature anisotropy found in expansion-driven Weibel instability means that MHD could be an adequate model because growth rates are much less than the electron plasma frequency, and wavelengths are much greater than the Debye length.

A geometric perspective on kinetic matter–radiation interaction and moment systems

Here, in this paper, we provide a geometric perspective on the kinetic interaction of matter and radiation, based on a pair bracket approach. We discuss the interaction of kinetic theories via dissipative brackets, with our fundamental example being the coupling of matter, described by the Boltzmann equation, and radiation, described by the radiation transport equation. We explore the transition from kinetic systems to their corresponding moment systems, provide a Hamiltonian description of such moment systems, and give a geometric interpretation of the moment closure problem for kinetic theories. As an application, we discuss in detail diffusion radiation hydrodynamics as an example of a pair bracket formulation on a space of moments corresponding to kinetic matter–radiation interaction. Additionally, using the variable moment closure framework of Burby [J. W. Burby, Variable-moment fluid closures with Hamiltonian structure, Sci. Rep. 13 (2023) 18286, doi:10.1038/s41598-023-45416-5], we show how to construct Hamiltonian moment closures for kinetic transport equations with arbitrary Hamiltonian. Using this general construction, we derive novel Hamiltonian moment closures for pure radiation transport.

MeV dark matter with MeV dark photons in Abelian kinetic mixing theories

Here we consider the cosmology and phenomenology of a dark photon portal to a simple dark sector consisting of a single, light, fermionic dark matter particle species with mass in the MeV range. We entertain three possible kinetic mixing structures of a new Abelian gauge group U(1) dark with the visible sector through U(1) e.m. , U(1) Y and T[SU(2)_L]. We assume the dark photon to be massive and around the MeV scale, thus close to the mass scale of the dark matter candidate. We compute the dark matter relic density via freeze-out and freeze-in, entertaining the additional possibility of a late inflationary period that could dilute the dark matter yield of heavy candidates, and (ii) additional production modes, for models with under-abundant thermal production. We explore the parameter space compatible with a variety of experimental and astrophysical bounds, and discuss prospects for discovery with new CMB probes and MeV gamma-ray telescopes.

Pre-equilibrium photons from the early stages of heavy-ion collisions

Abstract We use QCD kinetic theory to compute photon production in the chemically equilibrating Quark-Gluon Plasma created in the early stages of high-energy heavy-ion collisions. We do a detailed comparison of pre-equilibrium photon rates to the thermal photon production. We show that the photon spectrum radiated from a hydrodynamic attractor evolution satisfies a simple scaling form in terms of the specific shear viscosityη/sand entropy densitydS/dζ∼ (Tτ 1/3 ) 3/2 ∞ . We confirm the analytical predictions with numerical kinetic theory simulations. We use the extracted scaling function to compute the pre-equilibrium photon contribution in$$ \sqrt{s_{NN}} $$ s NN = 2.76 TeV 0–20% PbPb collisions. We demonstrate that our matching procedure allows for a smooth switching from pre-equilibrium kinetic to thermal hydrodynamic photon production. Finally, our publicly available implementation can be straightforwardly added to existing heavy ion models.

Experimental and computational study of phase space dynamics in strongly coupled plasmas with steep density gradients

Understanding how plasmas thermalize when density gradients are steep remains a fundamental challenge in plasma physics, with direct implications for fusion experiments and astrophysical phenomena. Standard hydrodynamic models break down in these regimes, and kinetic theories make predictions that have never been directly tested. Here, we present the first detailed phase-space measurements of a strongly coupled plasma as it evolves from sharp density gradients to thermal equilibrium. Using laser-induced fluorescence imaging of an ultracold calcium plasma, we track the complete ion distribution function f(x,v,t). We discover that commonly used kinetic models (Bhatnagar–Gross–Krook and Lenard–Bernstein) overpredict thermalization rates, even while correctly capturing the initial counterstreaming plasma formation. Our measurements reveal that the initial ion acceleration response scales linearly with electron temperature, and that the simulations underpredict the initial ion response. In our geometry we demonstrate the formation of well-controlled counterpropagating plasma beams. This experimental platform enables precision tests of kinetic theories and opens new possibilities for studying plasma stopping power and flow-induced instabilities in strongly coupled systems.

Scaling and adiabaticity in a rapidly expanding gluon plasma

In this work we aim to gain qualitative insight on the far-from-equilibrium behavior of the gluon plasma produced in the early stages of a heavy-ion collision. It was recently discovered [1] that the distribution functions of quarks and gluons in QCD effective kinetic theory (EKT) exhibit self-similar “scaling” evolution with time-dependent scaling exponents long before those exponents reach their pre-hydrodynamic fixed-point values. In this work we shed light on the origin of this time-dependent scaling phenomenon in the small-angle approximation to the Boltzmann equation. We first solve the Boltzmann equation numerically and find that time-dependent scaling is a feature of this kinetic theory, and that it captures key qualitative features of the scaling of hard gluons in QCD EKT. We then proceed to study scaling analytically and semi-analytically in this equation. We find that an appropriate momentum rescaling allows the scaling distribution to be identified as the instantaneous ground state of the operator describing the evolution of the distribution function, and the approach to the scaling function is described by the decay of the excited states. That is to say, there is a frame in which the system evolves adiabatically. Furthermore, from the conditions for adiabaticity we can derive evolution equations for the time-dependent scaling exponents. In addition to the known free-streaming and BMSS fixed points, we identify a new “dilute” fixed point when the number density becomes small before hydrodynamization. Corrections to the fixed point exponents in the small-angle approximation agree quantitatively with those found previously in QCD EKT and arise from the evolution of the ratio between hard and soft scales.

Computational Materials Design for Ceramic Nuclear Waste Forms Using Machine Learning, First-Principles Calculations, and Kinetics Rate Theory

Ceramic waste forms are designed to immobilize radionuclides for permanent disposal in geological repositories. One of the principal criteria for the effective incorporation of waste elements is their compatibility with the host material. In terms of performance under environmental conditions, the resistance of the waste forms to degradation over long periods of time is a critical concern when they are exposed to natural environments. Due to their unique crystallographic features and behavior in nature environment as exemplified by their natural analogues, ceramic waste forms are capable of incorporating problematic nuclear waste elements while showing promising chemical durability in aqueous environments. Recent studies of apatite- and hollandite-structured waste forms demonstrated an approach that can predict the compositions of ceramic waste forms and their long-term dissolution rate by a combination of computational techniques including machine learning, first-principles thermodynamics calculations, and modeling using kinetic rate equations based on critical laboratory experiments. By integrating the predictions of elemental incorporation and degradation kinetics in a holistic framework, the approach could be promising for the design of advanced ceramic waste forms with optimized incorporation capacity and environmental degradation performance. Such an approach could provide a path for accelerated ceramic waste form development and performance prediction for problematic nuclear waste elements.

Evolution of coupled weakly driven waves in a dissipative plasma

The nonlinear collisional dynamics of coupled driven plasma waves in the presence of background dissipation is studied analytically within kinetic theory. Sufficiently near marginal stability, phase space correlations are poorly preserved and time delays become unimportant. The system is then shown to be governed by two first-order coupled autonomous differential equations of cubic order for the wave amplitudes and two complementary first-order equations for the evolution of their phases. That system of equations can be decoupled and further simplified to a single second-order differential equation of Liénard's type for each amplitude. Numerical solutions for this equation are obtained in the general case, while analytic solutions are obtained for special cases in terms of parameters related to the spacing of the resonances of the two waves in frequency space, e.g., wave lengths and oscillation frequencies. These parameters are further analyzed to find classes of quasi-steady saturation and pulsating scenarios. To classify equilibrium points, local stability analysis is applied, and bifurcation conditions are determined. When the two waves saturate at similar amplitude levels, their combined signal is shown to invariably exhibit amplitude beating and phase jumps of nearly π. In conclusion, the obtained analytical results can be used to benchmark simulations and to interpret eigenmode amplitude measurements in fusion experiments.

Wave-kinetic approach to zonal-flow dynamics: Recent advances

The basic physics of drift-wave turbulence and zonal flows has long been studied within the framework of the wave-kinetic theory. Recently, this framework has been reexamined from first principles, which has led to more accurate yet still tractable “improved” wave-kinetic equations. In particular, these equations reveal an important effect of the zonal-flow “curvature” (the second radial derivative of the flow velocity) on the dynamics and stability of drift waves and zonal flows. Here, we overview these recent findings and present a consolidated high-level picture of (mostly quasilinear) zonal-flow physics within reduced models of drift-wave turbulence.

Spin alignment of vector mesons by glasma fields

We explain how spin alignment of vector mesons can be induced by background fields, such as electromagnetic fields or soft gluon fields. Our study is based on the quantum kinetic theory of spinning quarks and antiquarks and incorporates the relaxation of the dynamically generated spin polarization. The spin density matrix of vector mesons is obtained by quark coalescence via the Wigner function and kinetic equation. Our approach predicts a local spin correlation that is distinct from the nonlocal expressions previously obtained in phenomenological derivations. We estimate the magnitude of such local correlations in the glasma model of the preequilibrium phase of relativistic heavy ion collisions. It is found that the resulting spin alignment could be greatly enhanced and may be comparable to the experimental measurement in order of magnitude. We further propose new phenomenological scenarios to qualitatively explain the transverse-momentum and centrality dependence of spin alignment in a self-consistent framework.

Effects of Coulomb coupling on friction in strongly magnetized plasmas

The friction force on a test particle traveling through a plasma that is both strongly coupled and strongly magnetized is studied using molecular dynamics simulations. In addition to the usual stopping power component aligned antiparallel to the velocity, a transverse component that is perpendicular to both the velocity and Lorentz force is observed. This component, which was recently discovered in weakly coupled plasmas, is found to increase in both absolute and relative magnitude in the strongly coupled regime. Strong coupling is also observed to induce a third component of the friction force in the direction of the Lorentz force. These first-principles simulations reveal novel physics associated with collisions in strongly coupled, strongly magnetized, plasmas that are not predicted by existing kinetic theories. The effect is expected to influence macroscopic transport in a number of laboratory experiments and astrophysical plasmas.

Dynamic Structure of Magnetized High Energy Density Plasmas (Final Report)

This report summarizes results of project DE-SC0022202 ``Dynamic Structure of Magnetized High Energy Density Plasmas,'' which was originally funded for the period 08/01/2021 - 7/31/2022, but was no-cost extended to 7/31/2023. The primary objectives of the work, as stated in the original proposal, were ``develop a theory to describe a novel state of magnetized high energy density plasmas, benchmark the theory using first-principles molecular dynamics simulations, and apply the results to develop a means to interpret x-ray scattering measurements in future experiments.'' These were the goals of the original project proposal, which was for a 3 year project. The project was ultimately funded for 1 year, and so the work completed focused on the goals described for only the first year of the proposed work. This included further developing a kinetic theory for strongly magnetized plasmas, applying it to compute fluid-scale (MHD) transport coefficients, and to test the predictions using molecular dynamics simulations.

Cross-field electron diffusion due to the coupling of drift-driven microinstabilities

In this paper, the nonlinear interaction between kinetic instabilities driven by multiple ion beams and magnetized electrons is investigated. Electron diffusion across magnetic field lines is enhanced by the coupling of plasma instabilities. Here, a two-dimensional collisionless particle-in-cell simulation is performed accounting for singly and doubly charged ions in a cross-field configuration. Consistent with prior linear kinetic theory analysis and observations from coherent Thomson scattering experiments, the present simulations identify an ion-ion two-stream instability due to multiply charged ions (flowing in the direction parallel to the applied electric field) which coexists with the electron cyclotron drift instability (propagating perpendicular to the applied electric field and parallel to the ExB drift). Small-scale fluctuations due to the coupling of these naturally driven kinetic modes are found to be a mechanism that can enhance cross-field electron transport and contribute to the broadening of the ion velocity distribution functions.

A conservative discontinuous Galerkin algorithm for particle kinetics on smooth manifolds

A novel, conservative discontinuous Galerkin algorithm is presented for particle kinetics on manifolds. The motion of particles on the manifold is represented using both canonical and non-canonical Hamiltonian formulations. Our schemes apply to both formulations, but the canonical formulation results in a particularly efficient scheme that also conserves particle density and energy exactly. The collisionless update is coupled to a Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook (BGK) collision operator that provides a simplified model for relaxation to local thermodynamic equilibrium. An iterative scheme is constructed to ensure collisional invariants (density, momentum and energy) are preserved numerically. Rotation of the manifold is incorporated by modifying the Hamiltonian while ensuring a canonical formulation. Several test problems, including a kinetic version of the classical Sod shock problem, Kelvin-Helmholtz instability on the surfaces of a sphere and a hyperboloid, with and without rotations, are presented. A prospectus for further development of this approach to simulation of kinetic theory in general relativity is presented.
