New Horizons: Long-Range Kuiper Belt Targets Observed by the Hubble Space Telescope

We report on Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations of three Kuiper Belt Objects (KBOs), discovered in our dedicated ground-based search campaign, that are candidates for long-range observations from the New Horizons spacecraft: 2011 epochY31, 2011 HZ102, and 2013 LU35. Astrometry with HST enables both current and future critical accuracy improvements for orbit precision, required for possible New Horizons observations, beyond what can be obtained from the ground. Photometric colors of all three objects are red, typical of the Cold Classical dynamical population within which they reside; they are also the faintest KBOs to have had their colors measured. None are observed to be binary with HST above separations of approx. 0.02 arcsec (approx. 700 km at 44 AU) and delta m less than or equal to 0.5.

Dynamical evolution of dust particles in the Kuiper disk

A Kuiper belt dust disk will have a resonant structure, arising because the Plutinos are in the 3:2 mean motion resonance with Neptune. We run numerical integrations of particles originating from Plutinos to determine what percentage of particles remain in the resonance for a variety of particle and source body sizes. The dynamical evolution of the particles is followed from source to sink with Poynting-Robertson light drag, solar wind drag, radiation pressure, the Lorentz force, neutral interstellar gas drag, and the effects of planetary gravitational perturbations included. The number of particles in the 3:2 resonance increases with decreasing p for the cases where the initial source bodies are small and the percentage of particles in resonance is not significantly changed by either the addition of the Lorentz force, as long as the potential of the particles is small (U = 5 V), or the effect of neutral interstellar gas drag.

Dynamics of the Trans-Neptune Region: Apsidal Waves in the Kuiper Belt

The role of apsidal density waves propagating in a primordial trans-Neptune disk (i.e., Kuiper belt) is investigated. It is shown that Neptune launches apsidal waves at its secular resonance near 40 AU wich propagate radially outwards, deeper into the particle disk.

Determination of the Telluric Water Vapor Absorption Correction for Astronomical Data Obtained from the Kuiper Airborne Observatory

The amount of telluric water vapor along the line of sight of the Kuiper Airborne Observatory telescope as obtained concommitantly on 23 flights is compared with the NASA-Ames Michelson interferometer and with the NOAA-Boulder radiometer. A strong correlation between the two determinations exists, and a method for computing the atmospheric transmission for a given radiometer reading is established.

A far-infrared photometer for the Kuiper Airborne Observatory

A high-angular-resolution multiaperture far-IR photometric instrument for multicolor observations of a variety of objects at effective wavelengths of 40 to 160 microns is described which is ideal for use on NASA's Kuiper Airborne Observatory. The operational principles of the instrument are discussed, along with the far-IR radiometer and the offset guiding module. System performance is evaluated on the basis of the noise-equivalent flux of the radiometer, guiding accuracy capability, the suitability to the scientific objectives of the filter bandpasses and focal-plane aperture sizes, the ease of operation, and operating efficiency. Some examples of recent observations with this instrument are provided.

Kuiper Airborne Observatory /Space Science Platform 1/

It is pointed out that jet transport aircraft operating in the stratosphere (often at 45,000 ft) have proved highly cost-effective and convenient as telescope platforms. The Kuiper Airborne Observatory (KAO) 91-cm telescope is described, with attention given to specifications, pointing and tracking, data handling, instrument development, and costs. It is noted that the observatory makes possible important astronomical research, graduate-level instruction, and the development and testing of rugged, remotely controlled instruments. Contributions made by the KAO to planetary astronomy, extragalactic astronomy, the interstellar medium, and to the study of star formation and evolution are enumerated.

Testing of the Kuiper Airborne Observatory 91-CM telescope

The 91 cm telescope of the Kuiper Airborne Observatory was tested for optical figure errors in the surface of the mirrors and misalignment of the optical components. When the present set of optical components are installed in the telescope in proper alignment, the telescope produces an image with 80% of the energy in a circle of 1.50 arc seconds in diameter; that is, a 0.11 mm spot diameter in the focal plane. The primary mirror, an f/2 parabola, was tested against a flat and has a quality that puts 80% of the energy in a 0.51 arc second diameter spot. Two principal sources account for the residual error: the tertiary folding flat and the chopping secondary. It appears that the method of mounting the folding flat causes some distortion and that the secondary mirror has some residual spherical aberration in its figure.

Optical photometry with the Kuiper Airborne Observatory

The properties of optical photometric data obtainable with the 0.9-meter telescope of the Kuiper Airborne Observatory are described. The major differences between airborne and ground-based data are the absence of scintillation and the increased cosmic-ray background in the airborne data and the large size and vibration of the airborne images. The underlying cause of the large airborne images in not known although refraction in the turbulent boundary layer of the aircraft is suspected to be the major factor.

A hardware/software simulation for the video tracking system of the Kuiper Airborne Observatory telescope

This simulator was created so that C-141 Kuiper Airborne Observatory investigators could test their Airborne Data Acquisition and Management System software on a system which is generally more accessible than the ADAMS on the plane. An investigator can currently test most of his data acquisition program using the data computer simulator in the Cave. (The Cave refers to the ground-based computer facilities for the KAO and the associated support personnel.) The main Cave computer is interfaced to the data computer simulator in order to simulate the data-Exec computer communications. However until now, there has been no way to test the data computer interface to the tracker. The simulator described here simulates both the KAO Exec and tracker computers with software which runs on the same Hewlett-Packard (HP) computer as the investigator's data acquisition program. A simulator control box is hardwired to the computer to provide monitoring of tracker functions, to provide an operator panel similar to the real tracker, and to simulate the 180 deg phase shifting of the chopper squre-wave reference with beam switching. If run in the Cave, one can use their Exec simulator and this tracker simulator.

A Far Infrared Echelle Spectrometer for the Kuiper Airborne Observatory

A liquid-helium-cooled grating spectrometer (CGS) is being developed as a facility instrument for the Kuiper Airborne Observatory (KAO), primarily to study for infrared lines originating in the interstellar medium. A maximum resolving power of approximately 6000 is achieved by means of a 45 cm long Echelle grating and is optically capable of operating in the spectral range from 25 to 300 microns. An array of detectors is used to simultaneously measure a line and the adjacent continuum from astronomical sources. Currently six detectors allow measurements in the 30 to 120 micron spectral band. The instrument, its operation, and its performance are described.

Molecular spectroscopy from the Kuiper Airborne Observatory

Interstellar and circumstellar molecules are investigated through medium-resolution infrared spectrosocpy of the vibration-rotation and pure rotational transitions. A primary goal was the construction and improvement of instrumentation for the near and middle infrared regions, wavelengths between 2 and 10 microns. The main instrument was a cooled grating spectrometer with an interchangeable detector focal plane which could be used on the Kuiper Airborne Observatory (KAO) for airborne observations, and also at ground-based facilities. Interstellar shock waves were investigated by H2 emission from the Orion Nebula, W51, and the proto-planetary nebulae CRL 2688 and CRL 618. The observations determined the physical conditions in shocked molecular gas near these objects. From these it was possible to characterize the energetic history of mass loss from both pre- and post-main sequence stars in the regions.

An FIR cooled grating spectrometer for the Kuiper Airborne Observatory

The design and performance of a liquid-He-cooled spectrometer being developed for the Kuiper Airborne Observatory (KAO) to study FIR lines originating in the interstellar medium are discussed. Currently, the spectrometer contains six Ge:Ga photoconductor detectors mounted in integrating cavities and cooled to about 3 K; the collimator focal plane has space for 39 such detectors. The instrument achieves a maximum resolving power of 6000 by means of a 45-cm long echelle grating and is optically capable of operating in the spectral range 25-300 microns. A laboratory spectrum of water vapor, an atmospheric water absorption feature measured from the KAO with Mars as a source, and the forbidden O(2+) emission from W51-IRS1 are shown.

Far-infrared spectral studies from the G. P. Kuiper Airborne Observatory

The grant to carry out far-infrared spectral studies of astronomical sources from the G. P. Kuiper Airborne Observatory was first funded in October 1978 and officially ended on October 31, 1986. During these eight years, A variety of previously undetected spectral lines was discovered, and these were used to determine the physical and chemical conditions prevailing in regions of active star formation. They served to clarify the nature of the ionized hydrogen regions often adjacent to star-forming clouds, the characteristics of shocks which may signify the onset of star formation, and the nature of coolants that channel away energy thus enabling a cloud to collapse to form new stars.

Near infrared spectroscopy of SN 1987A using the Kuiper Airborne Observatory

An IR spectrum (1.5-3.0 microns) of SN 1987A was obtained on UT April 16.3, 1987 with the University of Arizona Fourier-transform spectrometer on the NASA Kuiper Airborne Observatory. The dominant spectral features were a double-peaked P-alpha emission line and a sharp absorption edge in the continuum at 2.7 microns, both of which would have been obscured by strong telluric H2O absorptions at ground-based observatories. These IR features relate to models of the SN shell and to the role of dust in SN.

Digital control of the Kuiper Airborne Observatory telescope

The feasibility of using a digital controller to stabilize a telescope mounted in an airplane is investigated. The telescope is a 30 in. infrared telescope mounted aboard a NASA C-141 aircraft known as the Kuiper Airborne Observatory. Current efforts to refurbish the 14-year-old compensation system have led to considering a digital controller. A typical digital controller is modeled and added into the telescope system model. This model is simulated on a computer to generate the Bode plots and time responses which determine system stability and performance parameters. Important aspects of digital control system hardware are discussed. A summary of the findings shows that a digital control system would result in satisfactory telescope performance.

Infrared spectroscopy of SN 1987A from the NASA Kuiper Airborne Observatory

The near-infrared (1.5-3.0 microns) spectrum of SN 1987A was recorded on UT 16.3 April 1987 from the NASA Kuiper Airborne Observatory. The dominant spectral features included multicomponent P-alpha emission at 1.9 micron and a sharp edge in the continuum at 2.7 microns. The interpretation of these features relates to physical conditions in the supernova atmosphere and to the role of dust around supernovae.

A 100-micron polarimeter for the Kuiper Airborne Observatory

Consideration is given to the design and performance of the 100-micron polarimeter proposed for use on the NASA Kuiper Airborne Observatory. The polarimeter specifications are listed. The polarimeter design and data reduction techniques are based on the work of Hildebrand et al. (1984) and Dragovan (1986). The polarimeter has an improved signal-to-noise ratio and systematic measurement errors below 0.2 percent.
