Legacy Survey of Space and Time Data Preview 2: visit_detector_table dataset type

We present Rubin Data Preview 2 (DP2), the second data preview from the NDF-DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory. Data Preview 2 (DP2) comprises coadds, detection catalogs, and ancillary data products; and when fully released will also include single-epoch images and difference images. DP2 is derived from observations acquired by the LSST Science Camera (LSSTCam) on the Simonyi Survey Telescope at the Summit Facility on Cerro Pachón, Chile, primarily during the on-sky commissioning campaign between 2025-04-16 and 2025-09-21, supplemented by observations taken between 2025-10-25 and 2026-01-06 that overlap the commissioning footprint. The DP2 footprint comprises the Science Validation wide-area survey, five Deep Drilling Fields, and a number of targeted small-field regions, including Trifid and Lagoon, Prawn, M49, and New Horizons, all observed as part of the Rubin First Look campaign. Each field was imaged in up to six broad photometric bands, ugrizy, and coadded to produce deep imaging covering an estimated 3,000 deg2. The addition of single-visit-only areas expands the total DP2 footprint to an estimated 15,000 deg2, with coverage in at least one filter. The median per-visit PSF FWHM across the wide-area survey ranges from 1.17 arcsec in the z band to 1.26 arcsec in g and r bands. The deepest field, reaches estimated coadded 5σ depths of u=26 mag, g=26.8 mag, r=26.3 mag, i=26.1 mag, z=25.3 mag, y=23.9 mag. Based on a roughly five-month primary observing baseline and covering only part of the eventual LSST footprint, DP2's area, depth, and multiband coverage nonetheless support a broad range of early science investigations ahead of LSST Data Release This dataset is a subset of the full data release consisting of the visit_detector_table dataset type. These are per-detector visit metadata. This release contains 1 dataset of this type.

These are metadata summarizing a visit. This release contains 28,698 datasets of this type.

Poisson_CCD: A dedicated simulator for modeling CCDs

A dedicated simulator, Poisson_CCD, has been constructed which models astronomical CCDs by solving Poisson’s equation numerically and simulating charge transport within the CCD. The potentials and free carrier densities within the CCD are self-consistently solved for, giving realistic results for the charge distribution within the CCD storage wells. The simulator has been used to model the CCDs that are being used to construct the LSST digital camera. The simulator output has been validated by comparing its predictions with several different types of CCD measurements, including astrometric shifts, brighter-fatter induced pixel–pixel covariances, saturation effects, and diffusion spreading. The code is open source and freely available.

SITCOMTN-149: An Interim Report on the LSSTComCam On-Sky Campaign

From 24 October to 11 December 2024, the NSF-DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory conducted an on-sky campaign using the engineering LSST Commissioning Camera (LSSTComCam) to test the end-to-end functionality of hardware and software, as well as operational procedures. This interim report provides a preliminary technical overview of our understanding of the integrated system performance based tests and analyses conducted during the LSSTComCam on-sky campaign. The objectives are to synthesize what we have learned about the system in a timely way to inform on-going commissioning efforts, and to inform the Rubin science community on the progress of the LSSTComCam on-sky campaign. The report is organized into sections to describe major activities during the campaign, as well as multiple aspects of the demonstrated system and science performance. All of the results presented here are to be understood as work in progress using engineering data and the initial versions of the data processing pipelines; the report is a living document that will be updated as analyses are refined.

Enabling Early Transient Discovery in LSST via Difference Imaging with DECam

We present SLIDE, a pipeline that enables transient discovery in data from the Vera C. Rubin Observatory’s Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST), using archival images from the Dark Energy Camera as templates for difference imaging. We apply this pipeline to the recently released Data Preview 1 (DP1; the first public release of Rubin commissioning data) and search for transients in the resulting difference images. The image subtraction, photometry extraction, and transient detection are all performed on the Rubin Science Platform. We demonstrate that SLIDE effectively extracts clean photometry by circumventing poor or missing LSST templates. We identified 29 previously unreported transients, 12 of which would not have been detected based on the DP1 DiaObject catalog. SLIDE will be especially useful for transient analysis in the early years of LSST, when template coverage will be largely incomplete or when templates may be contaminated by transients present at the time of acquisition. We present multiband light curves for a sample of known transients, along with new transient candidates identified through our search. Finally, we discuss the prospects of applying this pipeline during the main LSST survey. Our pipeline is broadly applicable and will support studies of all transients with slowly evolving phases.
