An Overview of Argonne’s Advanced Mobility Technology Laboratory Vehicle Systems Instrumentation and Evaluation Methodology

This report will provide a general overview of the testing facilities, research equipment, and general testing methodologies Argonne utilizes to conduct vehicle technology evaluations of advanced technology research vehicles. Data is captured from vehicle evaluations that provide powertrain operation and corresponding energy consumption based on a combination of in-depth instrumentation and focused testing. This resulting dataset of hundreds of time-resolved vehicle signals provide a basis for direct analysis and model validation of vehicle specific technologies. Argonne has attempted to standardize the approach to vehicle instrumentation and testing at Argonne, but it should be noted that each vehicle, and the corresponding assessment, remains unique. It is suggested that the reader reference vehicle specific testing reports for an overview of the unique aspects for each test vehicle. Additionally, the datasets for research vehicles are made publicly available through the Advanced Mobility Technology Laboratory’s Downloadable Driving Database (D3) at www.anl.gov/d3.

Overview of Shielding Analyses at Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Spallation Neutron Source Second Target Station

The Neutronics Group of the Second Target Station project at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is responsible for all neutronics analyses related to design and construction. This paper provides an overview of four neutronics analyses performed for the Second Target Station project, which is representative of all the ongoing work but especially tasks related to shielding. These analyses extend from the proton accelerator through the target monolith and bunker to the end of a neutron beamline. Each example highlights the tools and methods the Neutronics Group uses for analysis. The primary tool is the Monte Carlo radiation transport code MCNP 6.2, but this is augmented by other codes that supplement the input of MCNP. The other codes specifically highlighted in this paper include Attila4MC, ADVANTG, and AARE.

Proton imaging of high-energy-density laboratory plasmas

Proton imaging has become a key diagnostic for measuring electromagnetic fields in high-energy-density (HED) laboratory plasmas. Compared to other techniques for diagnosing fields, proton imaging is a measurement that can simultaneously offer high spatial and temporal resolution and the ability to distinguish between electric and magnetic fields without the protons perturbing the plasma of interest. Consequently, proton imaging has been used in a wide range of HED experiments, from inertial-confinement fusion to laboratory astrophysics. An overview is provided on the state of the art of proton imaging, including a discussion of experimental considerations like proton sources and detectors, the theory of proton-imaging analysis, and a survey of experimental results demonstrating the breadth of applications. As a result, topics at the frontiers of proton-imaging development are also described, along with an outlook on the future of the field.

Review of Feasibility and Cost Drivers for Floating Offshore Wind Energy in Washington State

The state of Washington must double its clean electricity supply by 2050 to meet its clean energy goals and comply with the Clean Energy Transformation Act. With more than 6.6 GW of technical resource potential in federal waters where Bureau of Ocean Energy Management has leasing authority, offshore wind energy could play an important role in diversifying Washington State's clean energy mix, reducing dependence on out-of-state energy sources, and helping meet state decarbonization goals. Decision makers need technology-specific information to assist with long-term energy system planning, so the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management requested that the National Renewable Energy Laboratory provide an overview of several drivers of offshore wind energy feasibility and cost in Washington. This study summarizes some of the existing engagement efforts and perspectives on offshore wind energy in the region and quantifies the offshore wind resources in Washington as well as technology costs and performance of potential projects. Furthermore, this report reviews existing grid and port infrastructure and discusses infrastructure needs along with information gaps. This study also explores opportunities and barriers to Washington entities supporting the broader floating offshore wind energy supply chain along the U.S. West Coast. Note that this study is not part of a formal project planning process or official engagement effort, nor does it assess environmental or economic impacts from potential offshore wind energy development.
