Lattice physics calculations using the embedded self-shielding method in polaris, Part II: Benchmark assessment

Polaris is a 2D multigroup lattice physics capability in the SCALE code system used for the analysis of light water reactor fuel designs. In this work, verification and validation results of Polaris in SCALE 6.2 are presented. The SCALE/KENO continuous-energy Monte Carlo code is used as a reference to compare the results of more than 2,000 combinations of pressurized water reactor and boiling water reactor lattice designs and state points. Radiochemical assay measurements were also used to assess the accuracy of depletion calculations. Results show that Polaris, with ENDF/B-VII.1 cross section library, produces accurate lattice physics data for core simulators.

Lattice QCD calculation of the pion generalized parton distribution

We present the results of a Lattice QCD computation of pion generalized parton distribution (GPD), employing perturbative matching up to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO). The computations are based on an ensemble of Nf=2+1 highly improved staggered quarks (HISQ) with a pion mass of 300 MeV and a lattice spacing of 0.04 fm. Centered on the zero-skewness limit, we utilize a recently proposed Lorentz-invariant definition of GPD, which is derived from Lorentz-invariant amplitudes. We analyze and compare these amplitudes in both Breit and non-Breit kinematic frames at comparable momentum transfers, validating their frame-independent nature. To obtain light-cone GPD, we integrate hybrid scheme renormalization with the large momentum effective theory (LaMET). Moreover, we determine the first three iso-vector generalized form factors (GFFs) of the pion using the ratio scheme renormalization and leading-twist factorization, achieving NNLO accuracy.

Lattice model calculation of elastic and thermodynamic properties at high pressure and temperature

The elastic constants and the entire frequency spectrum were calculated up to high pressure for the alkali halides in the NaCl lattice, based on an assumed functional form of the inter-atomic potential. The quasiharmonic approximation is used to calculate the vibrational contribution to the pressure and the elastic constants at arbitrary temperature. By explicitly accounting for the effect of thermal and zero point motion, the adjustable parameters in the potential are determined to a high degree of accuracy from the elastic constants and their pressure derivatives measured at zero pressure. The calculated Gruneisen parameter, the elastic constants and their pressure derivatives are in good agreement with experimental results up to about 600 K. The model predicts that for some alkali halides the Grunesen parameter may decrease monotonically with pressure, while for others it may increase with pressure, after an initial decrease.

Resummation for lattice QCD calculation of generalized parton distributions at nonzero skewness

Large-momentum effective theory (LaMET) provides an approach to directly calculate the x-dependence of generalized parton distributions (GPDs) on a Euclidean lattice through power expansion and a perturbative matching. When a parton’s momentum becomes soft, the corresponding logarithms in the matching kernel become non-negligible at higher orders of perturbation theory, which requires a resummation. But the resummation for the off-forward matrix elements at nonzero skewness ξ is difficult due to their multi-scale nature. In this work, we demonstrate that these logarithms are important only in the threshold limit, and derive the threshold factorization formula for the quasi-GPDs in LaMET. We then propose an approach to resum all the large logarithms based on the threshold factorization, which is implemented on a GPD model. We demonstrate that the LaMET prediction is reliable for [−1 + x 0 , −ξ − x 0 ] ∪ [−ξ + x 0 , ξ − x 0 ] ∪ [ξ + x 0 , 1 − x 0 ], where x 0 is a cutoff depending on hard parton momenta. Through our numerical tests with the GPD model, we demonstrate that our method is self-consistent and that the inverse matching does not spread the nonperturbative effects or power corrections to the perturbatively calculable regions.

Two-nucleon 𝑆-wave interactions at the SU(3) flavor-symmetric point with 𝑚 𝑢⁢𝑑 ≈ 𝑚$^{phys}_𝑠$: A first lattice QCD calculation with the stochastic Laplacian Heaviside method

We report on the first application of the stochastic Laplacian Heaviside method for computing multiparticle interactions with lattice QCD to the two-nucleon system. Like the Laplacian Heaviside method, this method allows for the construction of interpolating operators which can be used to construct a set of positive-definite two-nucleon correlation functions, unlike nearly all other applications of lattice QCD to two nucleons in the literature. It also allows for a variational analysis in which optimal linear combinations of the interpolating operators are formed that couple predominantly to the eigenstates of the system. Utilizing such methods has become of paramount importance to help resolve the discrepancy in the literature on whether two nucleons in either isospin channel form a bound state at pion masses heavier than physical, with the discrepancy persisting even in the SU(3)-flavor-symmetric point with all quark masses near the physical strange quark mass. This is the first in a series of papers aimed at resolving this discrepancy. In the present work, we employ the stochastic Laplacian Heaviside method without a hexaquark operator in the basis at a lattice spacing of 𝑎 ≈0.086 fm, lattice volume of 𝐿 = 48⁢𝑎 ≈ 4.1 fm and pion mass 𝑚 𝜋 ≈ 714 MeV. With this setup, the observed spectrum of two-nucleon energy levels strongly disfavors the presence of a bound state in either the deuteron or dineutron channel.

First-principles calculation of lattice distortions in four single phase high entropy alloys with experimental validation

Exceptional properties of high entropy alloys (HEAs) are attributed to the disordered random solid solution of multiple alloying elements. Despite numerous studies, the fundamental understanding at the electronic and atomic levels is still missing. We report a comparative study of four fcc HEAs of NiFeCoCr and NiFeCoCrX (X = Mn, Cu, or Pd) based on ab initio calculations using large supercells with 500 atoms in equal composition. After fully optimizing their structures using the VASP package, their electronic structure, interatomic bonding, partial charge distribution, and mechanical properties are calculated and compared, revealing the intricate interdependence among them. A novel parameter based on the quantum mechanical metric for internal cohesion, the total bond order density (TBOD), is used to interpret the calculated properties. The highest TBOD is found in Cantor alloy NiFeCoCrMn but lower in NiFeCoCrPd. The atomic radii vary depending on their local chemical environment. The resulting lattice distortions is validated experimentally in NiFeCoCrMn and NiFeCoCrPd. Moreover, modeling of Cu and Pd clustering in the supercell shows they have lower total energy in agreement with the observation of Cu-enhanced nano-participates in NiFeCoCrCu and Pd-induced concentration wave in NiFeCoCrPd HEAs.

Gluon transverse-momentum-dependent distributions from large-momentum effective theory

We demonstrate that gluon transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution functions (TMDPDFs) can be extracted from lattice calculations of appropriate Euclidean correlations in large-momentum effective theory (LaMET). Based on perturbative calculations of gluon unpolarized and helicity TMDPDFs, we present a matching formula connecting them and their LaMET counterparts, where the latter are renormalized in a scheme facilitating lattice calculations and converted to the $\overline{MS}$ scheme. The hard matching kernel is given up to one-loop level. We also show that the perturbative result is independent of the prescription used for the pinch-pole singularity in the relevant correlations. Our results offer a guidance for the extraction of gluon TMDPDFs from lattice simulations, and have the potential to greatly facilitate perturbative calculations of the hard matching kernel.

Towards Lattice QCD Calculations of Pion Production

Neutrino oscillation experiments require accurate reconstructions of neutrino energies, which depend in part on a theoretical understanding of the axial N→Δ transition form factors. A lattice QCD study of this transition will require construction of all hadronic states with energies up to mΔ, which at the physical point includes Nπ and Nππ. Building interpolating operators from sparse grids at the source and sink is a versatile method that allows construction of a wide range of diagram topologies and has successfully been used in other multi-hadron calculations. We will discuss application of this method to nucleon-pion systems and present preliminary results.

Generalized parton distributions through universal moment parameterization: zero skewness case

We present a global analysis program for the generalized parton distributions (GPDs) based on conformal moment expansion. We apply the strategy of universal moment parameterization to fit both the collinear parton distribution functions (PDFs) from phenomenology and generalized form factors from lattice calculations, and show that the parameterization is flexible enough to accommodate these constraints. In addition, we can also fit direct lattice calculations of GPDs from large-momentum effective theory. In this work we focus on the analysis of t-dependent PDFs which correspond to GPDs in the ξ → 0 limit. The strategy also applies to the ξ ≠ 0 region with extra parameters, and therefore can be fitted to experimental observables in the future. With a demonstrative example of fitted GPDs, we exhibit the quark transverse angular momentum densities of the proton as well as the impact parameter space distributions of quarks in both unpolarized and transversely polarized protons.

Three-dimensional imaging of pion using lattice QCD: generalized parton distributions

In this work, we report a lattice calculation of x-dependent valence pion generalized parton distributions (GPDs) at zero skewness with multiple values of the momentum transfer −t. The calculations are based on an N f = 2 + 1 gauge ensemble of highly improved staggered quarks with Wilson-Clover valence fermion. The lattice spacing is 0.04 fm, and the pion valence mass is tuned to be 300 MeV. We determine the Lorentz-invariant amplitudes of the quasi-GPD matrix elements for both symmetric and asymmetric momenta transfers with similar values and show the equivalence of both frames. Then, focusing on the asymmetric frame, we utilize a hybrid scheme to renormalize the quasi-GPD matrix elements obtained from the lattice calculations. After the Fourier transforms, the quasi-GPDs are then matched to the light-cone GPDs within the framework of large momentum effective theory with improved matching, including the next-to-next-to-leading order perturbative corrections, and leading renormalon and renormalization group resummations. We also present the 3-dimensional image of the pion in impact-parameter space through the Fourier transform of the momentum transfer −t.

Phonons in Copper Diphosphide (CuP 2 ): Raman Spectroscopy and Lattice Dynamics Calculations

Copper diphosphide (CuP 2 ) is an emerging binary semiconductor with promising properties for energy conversion and storage applications. While functionality and possible applications of CuP 2 have been studied, there is a curious gap in the investigation of its vibrational properties. In this work, we provide a reference Raman spectrum of CuP 2 , with a complete analysis of all Raman active modes from both experimental and theoretical perspectives. Raman measurements have been performed on polycrystalline CuP 2 thin films with close to stoichiometric composition. Detailed deconvolution of the Raman spectrum with Lorentzian curves has allowed identification of all theoretically predicted Raman active modes (9A g and 9B g ), including their positions and symmetry assignment. Furthermore, calculations of the phonon density of states (PDOS), as well as the phonon dispersions, provide a microscopic understanding of the experimentally observed phonon lines, in addition to the assignment to the specific lattice eigenmodes. We further provide the theoretically predicted positions of the infrared (IR) active modes, along with the simulated IR spectrum from density functional theory (DFT). Overall good agreement is found between the experimental and DFT-calculated Raman spectra of CuP 2 , providing a reference platform for future investigations on this material.

Connected and Disconnected Sea Partons from CT18 Parametrization of PDFs

The separation of the connected and disconnected sea partons, which were uncovered in the Euclidean path-integral formulation of the hadronic tensor, is accommodated with the CT18 parametrization of the global analysis of the parton distribution functions (PDFs). This is achieved with the help of the distinct small x x behaviors of these two sea parton components and the constraint from the lattice calculation of the ratio of the strange momentum fraction to that of the {\bar u} u ‾ or {\bar d} d ‾ in the disconnected insertion. This allows lattice calculations of separate flavors in both the connected and disconnected insertions to be directly compared with the global analysis results term by term.

Rosenbluth-like separation of the $J/ψ$ near-threshold photoproduction: An access to the gluon gravitational form factors at high t

Here, we perform analysis of the near-threshold $J/\psi $ photoproduction data off the proton based on two theoretical approaches, GPD \cite{Guo3} and holographic \cite{Zahed2}, that represent the differential cross sections as powers of the skewness parameter with coefficients that depend only on the momentum transfer $t$. This allows to separate kinematically the corresponding coefficient functions, in much the same way as this is done for the electric and magnetic form factors using the Rosenbluth separation. We examine the independence of the extracted functions with the photon beam energy. These functions, under additional assumptions, are related to the proton's gluon Gravitational Form Factors (gGFFs). We compare the extracted functions with lattice calculations of the gGFFs in the region of $0.5<|t|<2$~GeV$^{2}$, where they overlap. Such analysis demonstrates the possibility of extracting some combinations of the gGFFs from the data at high $t$, complementary to the lattice calculations available in the low $t$ region. However, higher statistics are needed to more accurately check the predicted scaling behavior of the data and compare with the lattice results, thus testing and comparing the theoretical assumptions used in the GPD and holographic models.

Lattice QCD Calculations of Transverse-Momentum-Dependent Soft Function through Large-Momentum Effective Theory

The transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) soft function is a key ingredient in QCD factorization of Drell-Yan and other processes with relatively small transverse momentum. We present a lattice QCD study of this function at moderately large rapidity on a 2 + 1 flavor CLS dynamic ensemble with a = 0.098 fm. We extract the rapidity-independent (or intrinsic) part of the soft function through a large-momentumtransfer pseudoscalar meson form factor and its quasi-TMD wave function using leading-order factorization in large-momentum effective theory. We also investigate the rapidity-dependent part of the soft function—the Collins-Soper evolution kernel—based on the large-momentum evolution of the quasi-TMD wave function.

Systematic improvement of x -dependent unpolarized nucleon generalized parton distributions in lattice-QCD calculation

We present a first study of the effects of renormalization-group resummation (RGR) and leading-renormalon resummation (LRR) on the systematic errors of the unpolarized isovector nucleon generalized parton distribution in the framework of large-momentum effective theory. This work is done using lattice gauge ensembles generated by the MILC Collaboration, consisting of 2 + 1 + 1 flavors of highly improved staggered quarks with a physical pion mass at lattice spacing a ≈ 0.09 fm and a box width L ≈ 5.76 fm . We present results for the nucleon H and E generalized parton distributions (GPDs) with average boost momentum P z ≈ 2 GeV at momentum transfers Q 2 = [ 0 , 0.97 ] GeV 2 at skewness ξ = 0 as well as Q 2 ∈ 0.23 GeV 2 at ξ = 0.1 , renormalized in the modified minimal subtraction ( MS ¯ ) scheme at scale μ = 2.0 GeV , with two- and one-loop matching, respectively. We demonstrate that the simultaneous application of RGR and LRR significantly reduces the systematic errors in renormalized matrix elements and distributions for both the zero and nonzero skewness GPDs, and that it is necessary to include both RGR and LRR at higher orders in the matching and renormalization processes.
