Integrating Experiments and Well Logs to Predict Caney Shale Static Mechanical Properties During Production with Supervised Machine Learning

Caney shale is one of the emerging oil reservoirs in Oklahoma. Understanding the impact of effective stress on its mechanical properties is critical for predicting hydraulic fracture geometry and overall hydrocarbon production. The objective of our study is to evaluate the impact of effective stress on the dynamic Young’s modulus using ultrasonic velocity measurements for Caney shale samples. A triaxial cell was utilized to measure ultrasonic (P-wave and S-wave) velocities for ten downhole Caney shale samples under various effective stresses to indirectly assess the impact of pore pressure change. The dynamic Young’s moduli estimated from these measurements were integrated with available conventional well logs (excluding sonic logs) and triaxial test results from Benge et al. (2021) to predict the static Young’s modulus using Random Forest (RF) and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) models. The results showed that the estimated dynamic Young’s moduli from ultrasonic measurements were higher than the corresponding static Young’s modulus of cores from the same vertical well at similar depths. With increasing effective stress, the dynamic Young’s modulus increased for all samples. The estimated dynamic-to-static correction factor tended to be higher in zones of high neutron porosity (PHIN) and low density compared to other zones. Finally, SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) for RF and XGBoost models identified depth, gamma ray (GR), and PHIN as key features for predicting the static Young’s modulus. This study enhances our understanding of the dynamic and static Young’s moduli for the Caney shale interval, as a function of effective stress and conventional well logs. The findings from this study can improve predictions of production throughout the well's lifespan by offering insights into the mechanical property degradation resulting from pore pressure depletion.

Hyper Parameter Tuning in Neural Optical Image Categorizer for the E-log (NOICE

The Fermilab Accelerator Division Electronic logbook (E-log) is a record of all the activities and events in the Division for the past 10 years and more. The Elog search function is a valuable resource and the institutional memory of the accelerator complex. About 300,000 files are stored in the E-log, of which the vast majority are images attached to entries and comments. The visual information contained in the images is not presently searchable. The goal of team NOICE (Neural Optical Image Categorizer for the E-log) was to design a neural network able to produce label categories for these images for use by searches. The group developed a dataset and trained a convolutional neural network (CNN) with optimized hyperparameter. Final performance metrics are presented.

Log-N/Period Sensitivity Analysis

The Log-N/Period system utilizes a compensated ion chamber to measure neutron radiation in the reactor core. This analysis focuses on determining a more accurate value for the sensitivity of the installed compensated ion chambers for the Log-N/Period system at the ATR. Using calibration procedures a formula for indirectly calculating the sensitivity of the chambers was derived. Using historical data from approximately ten reactor cycles a new average sensitivity for both channels of the Log-N/Period system was determined.

Log-N/Period Power Offset Sensitivity Calculation

This study focused on the calculation of sensitivity values for Channels 4 and 5 in the Log-N/Period system at the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR). The Log-N/Period system provides an indication of reactor power generation between criticality and full power. This indication is determined by the power offset and the current produced by the detector. Sensitivity values for Channels 4 and 5 were calculated using existing equations, documents, reactor startup data.

LYNM-PE1 Seismic Parameters from Borehole Log, Laboratory, and Tabletop Measurements

The goal of this work is to provide a database of quality-checked seismic parameters that can be integrated with the Geologic Framework Model (GFM) for the LYNM-PE1 (Low Yield Nuclear Monitoring – Physical Experiment 1) testbed. We integrated data from geophysical borehole logs, tabletop measurements on collected core, and laboratory measurements. We reviewed for internal consistency among each measurement type, documented the caveats of measurement conditions, and integrated lithologic logs to check the validity of outlier values. The resulting consolidated parameter tables can be used as inputs for modeling and analysis codes and are designed to interface with the GFM, which is being actively developed.

CCUS Plume Monitoring: Verifying Surface CSEM Measurements to Log Scale Available

Conference presentation at Society of Petrophysicists and Well Log Analysts (SPWLA) 64th Annual Symposium, Lake Conroe, Texas, June 10–14, 2023. In carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) monitoring, dynamic plume monitoring and reservoir seal are key issues. Plume monitoring is best addressed with electromagnetics (sensitive to the resistivity contrast) and reservoir leakage with microseismics. A case history from North Dakota illustrates how we can tie surface-controlled source electromagnetic (CSEM) measurements to the three-dimensional (3D) anisotropic models derived from the available logs. This allows us to certify baseline measurements within the context of the borehole information.
