Development of a 120-mm Aperture Nb 3 Sn Dipole Coil With Stress Management

This paper describes a 120-mm aperture 2-layer dipole coil with stress management (SM) developed at Fermilab based on cos-theta coil geometry. A model of the coil support structure made of plastic was printed using additive manufacturing technology and used for practice coil winding. The real coil support structure was printed using the 316 stainless steel. The results of the SM structure size control and the key coil fabrication steps are reported in the paper. Finally, the design of coil SM structure and the coil FEA in the dipole mirror test configurations are presented and discussed.

Design, Fabrication, and Testing of a 1.9 m Long, 16.5 mm Period NbTi Superconducting Undulator for the Advanced Photon Source Upgrade

Superconducting undulator (SCU) technology has been in use at the Advanced Photon Source since 2013. Due to the successful and reliable operation of the existing SCUs, the Advanced Photon Source upgrade project has decided to expand the use of NbTi-based SCUs. The first new magnets to be designed and fabricated are 1.9 m long with a period length of 16.5 mm. NbTi superconductor is used for coil winding and there are four separate coils wound on the mandrel to produce the main undulator field along with end compensation and distributed dipole compensation. The magnetic design, fabrication details, assembly, and testing are described in detail.

An Initial Look at the Magnetic Design of a 150 mm Aperture High-Temperature Superconducting Magnet With a Dipole Field of 8 to 10 T

High-temperature superconducting REBa 2 Cu 3 O 7-$x$ (rebco) conductors have the potential to generate a high magnetic field over a broad temperature range. The corresponding accelerator magnet technology, still in its infancy, can be attractive for future energy-frontier particle colliders such as a multi-TeV muon collider. To help develop the technology, we explore the requirements and potential characteristics of a rebco magnet, operating at 4.2 or 20 K, with a dipole field of 8-10 T in a clear aperture of 150 mm. We use the canted cos $\theta$ magnet configuration to reduce the electromagnetic stresses on the conductors. We present the resulting dipole fields, field gradients for combined-function cases, conductor stresses, magnet dimensions and conductor lengths. We also discuss the conductor performance that is required to achieve the target dipole field at 4.2 and 20 K. In conclusion, the information can provide useful input to the development of rebco magnet and conductor technology for collider-ring magnets in a muon collider.

Suppressing Screening-Current-Induced Strain in a 72-mm-Bore REBCO Insert for a 20-T Magnet: A Numerical Study

Rare-earth barium copper oxide (REBCO) high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnets are considered a game changer for the capability of generating magnetic fields exceeding 20 T at or above liquid helium temperature, combined with the potential for substantially reduced manufacturing and operational costs. Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory is dedicated to developing large-bore high-field superconducting magnet systems to support forefront physics research. Here, our current project focuses on a φ72-mm cold-bore REBCO insert comprising 21 dry-wound double-pancake coils, designed to generate at least 8 T when nested within a 12-T outsert magnet. A significant challenge for high-field REBCO magnets is the time-varying-magnetic-field-induced screening currents (SC) in the REBCO conductors, which can cause localized strain and stress concentrations. This paper presents a numerical study of the SC-induced strain in the REBCO insert magnet, confirming that the SC-induced strain can be substantially suppressed by energizing the REBCO insert before the outsert magnets. We discuss and reveal the mechanism behind this reduction. By applying this strategy, we expect to unleash the potential of the REBCO insert magnet to generate up to 12 T in a 12-T background field.

Survival, growth and tag retention of juvenile European eel ( Anguilla anguilla L.) with implanted 12 mm passive integrated transponder tags and acoustic tags

To evaluate the efficiency of tagging juvenile European eels with implanted 12 mm passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags or Eel/Lamprey acoustic transmitters (ELATs), the authors studied tag retention, survival and growth of eels (7–25 g). Experimental eels were obtained from an eel farm, tagged and then released in a series of shallow dug-out ponds with a surface area of c. 200 m 2 . Tagged and control eels were distributed evenly, with 50 tagged and 50 control eels in each of four ponds, giving a total of 200 tagged and 200 control eels mixed. After 76 days, the ponds were drained, and eels were sampled and measured. A total of 344 eels (86%) were recaptured, indicating high survival. Tag retention was 99% as only one of the recaptured PIT-tagged eels had lost the tag and none of the ELAT tagged. The results demonstrated that tagging juvenile eels >16 cm with these small tags is indeed feasible. The growth of tagged and control fish was differentiated but generally low in length and negative in mass but did not differ between the three groups.

Reactor scale simulations of ALD and ALE: Ideal and non-ideal self-limited processes in a cylindrical and a 300 mm wafer cross-flow reactor

Here, we have developed a simulation tool to model self-limited processes such as atomic layer deposition (ALD) and atomic layer etching inside reactors of arbitrary geometry as well the output of in situ quartz crystal microbalance and mass spectrometry. We have applied this model to two standard types of cross-flow reactors: a cylindrical tube reactor and a model 300 mm wafer reactor, and explored both ideal and nonideal self-limited kinetics. The model results are in agreement with experimental results and analytic expressions obtained using a simple plug-flow model for the cylindrical tube reactor. We also extended the simulations to consider two nonideal self-limited processes: soft-saturating processes characterized by a slow reaction pathway and processes where surface by-products can compete with the precursor for the same pool of adsorption sites. Our results show that it is possible to have a self-limited process with saturated yet inhomogeneous growth profiles due to the competition of reactor by-products. This is in agreement with experimental observations for titanium dioxide ALD from titanium tetraisopropoxide and titanium tetrachloride precursors.

Mapping ammonia-diesel combustion on a single-cylinder 107 mm bore diesel engine retrofitted for ammonia port-fuel injection

Ammonia is garnering significant interest from the international maritime sector as an alternative fuel. It is attractive as a hydrogen carrier and as a fuel because it has a higher volumetric energy density compared with gaseous or liquid hydrogen, making it easier to store and transport without requiring high pressures or cryogenic storage. Ammonia has significant toxicity concerns, but safe handling procedures have already been established because it is one of the most widely produced chemicals worldwide for use as a fertilizer. Barriers to consuming NH 3 as a fuel in engines include (1) less favorable ignition energy and flame speed compared with conventional fuels; (2) emissions challenges, including potentially high NH 3 , NO X , and N 2 O emissions; and (3) fuel delivery and handling challenges. Although NH 3 has been used to fuel compression-ignition marine engines in limited demonstration projects, technical barriers still exist. The use of NH 3 as a fuel in smaller-bore, high-speed auxiliary engines for large vessels and for smaller inland and coastal marine applications remains unaddressed. This work investigates a late-injection diesel pilot ignition dual-fuel NH 3 strategy using a single-cylinder, high-speed Cummins four-stroke diesel engine platform with a 107 mm bore and 1.1 L displacement per cylinder. The engine was modified for port fuel injection of heated gaseous anhydrous NH 3 . The diesel fuel injection system and the combustion geometry were unmodified to represent a retrofit application, which would minimize additional hardware to maximize diesel fuel displacement with NH 3 . Furthermore, the results show the applicability of a late injection diesel pilot strategy to overcome the challenging fuel properties of NH 3 over the engine operating envelope. Mapping results focusing on emissions are presented, and comparisons are made to a conventional diesel combustion baseline.

Optimization of a 123 mm Aperture Nb3Sn Dipole Coil with Stress Management

A 123 mm aperture Nb3Sn cos-theta (CT) dipole coil with stress management (SM) was developed at Fermilab to demonstrate and test the SM concept. Additive Manufacturing technology was used to produce the coil mandrel. Several changes were made to the SMCT coil design and technology based on the analysis of post-production and two cold tests of the first SMCT coil. This article describes the differences in coil design, fabrication steps, and final parameters of the second SMCT coil and its components.

Observations of the Hydrogen Cyanide in Comet 46P/Wirtanen at a 3.4 mm Wavelength

We searched for rotational lines of H{sup 12}C{sup 14}N in comet 46P/Wirtanen, using the Purple Mountain Observatory 13.7 m radio telescope. The J = 1–0 lines of HCN (3.4 mm wavelength) were unambiguously detected in 46P during the 2018 December 14–15 period, with a beam resolution of 62.″2 and a velocity resolution of ∼0.21 km s{sup −1} per channel. The molecular production rates were computed. The mean HCN(1–0) production rate of 46P was (6.45 ± 1.31) × 10{sup 24} molec s{sup −1} in the above two days. We found possible indications of time variation in the outgassing activity. The average HCN abundance relative to water Q {sub [HCN]}/Q{sub [H{sub 2O]}} of 46P was (0.09 ± 0.01)%. The HCN line shapes gave primary information on the kinematics of the cometary atmosphere. The HCN linewidths provided a direct determination of the coma expansion velocity, which was about 0.5 ± 0.05 km s{sup −1} at post-perihelion (1.056 au).

Polarimetric Geometric Modeling for mm-VLBI Observations of Black Holes

The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) is a millimeter very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) array that has imaged the apparent shadows of the supermassive black holes M87* and Sagittarius A*. Polarimetric data from these observations contain a wealth of information on the black hole and accretion flow properties. In this work, we develop polarimetric geometric modeling methods for mm-VLBI data, focusing on approaches that fit data products with differing degrees of invariance to broad classes of calibration errors. We establish a fitting procedure using a polarimetric “m-ring” model to approximate the image structure near a black hole. By fitting this model to synthetic EHT data from general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic models, we show that the linear and circular polarization structure can be successfully approximated with relatively few model parameters. We then fit this model to EHT observations of M87* taken in 2017. In total intensity and linear polarization, the m-ring fits are consistent with previous results from imaging methods. In circular polarization, the m-ring fits indicate the presence of event-horizon-scale circular polarization structure, with a persistent dipolar asymmetry and orientation across several days. The same structure was recovered independently of observing band, used data products, and model assumptions. Despite this broad agreement, imaging methods do not produce similarly consistent results. Our circular polarization results, which imposed additional assumptions on the source structure, should thus be interpreted with some caution. Polarimetric geometric modeling provides a useful and powerful method to constrain the properties of horizon-scale polarized emission, particularly for sparse arrays like the EHT.

Impact of electrode porosity architecture on electrochemical performances of 1 mm-thick LiFePO4 binder-free Li-ion electrodes fabricated by Spark Plasma Sintering

Thick electrodes with high active material loadings have been intensively studied over the last couple of decades in pursuit of achieving high energy density systems. To optimize and enhance the electrochemical performance of such electrodes, one has to control the pore morphology by, for example, varying the pore size and shape, and the level of porosity. In the present work, the fabrication of thick binder-free LiFePO4 (LFP) electrodes with two different pore sizes (12 and 20 mu m) and porosities (21 vol% and 44 vol%) using Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) and templating approach is reported. The well-controlled porous architecture inside the thick electrodes is realized by fine-tuning experimental parameters. The impact of porosity architecture on electrochemical performance is quantified and correlated with the 3D tortuosity values determined from both micro-computed tomography and electrochemical impedance-based experimental methods. Based on the micro-computed tomography data analysis, estimated tortuosity values along X, Y, and Z axes reveal an anisotropic effect perpendicularly to the SPS compression axis (Z-direction). This is particularly profoundly observed in the samples with larger pores (20 mu m). The correlation between morphological properties and the rate capability performance is established indicating that the capacity loss happens mainly due to the Li-ion diffusion limitations.
