Nonlinear Quantum Electrodynamics in Dirac Materials

Classical electromagnetism is linear. However, fields can polarize the vacuum Dirac sea, causing quantum nonlinear electromagnetic phenomena, e.g., scattering and splitting of photons, that occur only in very strong fields found in neutron stars or heavy ion colliders. We show that strong nonlinearity arises in Dirac materials at much lower fields ~1 T, allowing us to explore the nonperturbative, extremely high field limit of quantum electrodynamics in solids. We explain recent experiments in a unified framework and predict a new class of nonlinear magnetoelectric effects, including a magnetic enhancement of dielectric constant of insulators and a strong electric modulation of magnetization. We propose experiments and discuss the applications in novel materials.

Epitaxial Stabilization of Single-Crystal Multiferroic YCrO 3 Thin Films

We report on the growth of stoichiometric, single-crystal YCrO 3 epitaxial thin films on (001) SrTiO 3 substrates using pulsed laser deposition. X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy reveal that the films grew in a layer-by-layer fashion with excellent crystallinity and atomically smooth surfaces. Magnetization measurements demonstrate that the material is ferromagnetic below 144 K. The temperature dependence of dielectric permittivity shows a characteristic relaxor-ferroelectric behavior at T C = 375–408 K. A dielectric anomaly at the magnetic transition temperature indicates a close correlation between magnetic and electric order parameters in these multiferroic YCrO 3 films. These findings provide guidance to synthesize rare-earth, chromite-based multifunctional heterostructures and build a foundation for future studies on the understanding of magnetoelectric effects in similar material systems.

Magnetic structure and magnetoelectric properties of the spin-flop phase in LiFePO 4

We investigate the magnetic structure and magnetoelectric(ME) effect in the high-field phase of the antiferromagnet LiFePO 4 above the critical field of 31 T. A neutron diffraction study in pulsed magnetic fields reveals the propagation vector to be q = 0 for the high-field magnetic structure. Pulsed-field electric polarization measurements show that, at the critical field, the low-field off-diagonal ME coupling α ab is partially suppressed, and the diagonal element α bb emerges. These results are consistent with a spin-flop transition where the spin direction changes from primarily being along the easy b axis below the transition to being along a above. The persistence of off-diagonal ME tensor elements above the critical field suggests a lowering of the magnetic point-group symmetry and hence a more complex magnetic structure in the high-field phase. In addition, neutron diffraction measurements in low magnetic fields show no observable field-induced spin canting, which indicates a negligible Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. The observed spin-flop field supports the Hamiltonian recently deduced from inelastic neutron studies and indicates that the system is less frustrated and with a larger single-ion anisotropy than originally thought. Our results demonstrate the effectiveness of combining pulsed-field neutron diffraction and electric polarization measurements to elucidate the magnetic structures and symmetries at the highest attainable field strengths.

Coexistence of Magnetoelectric and Antiferroelectric-like Orders in Mn 3 Ta 2 O 8

We report in materials showing a linear magnetoelectric (ME) effect, unconventional functionalities can be anticipated such as electric control of magnetism and nonreciprocal optical responses. Thus, the search for new linear ME materials is of interest in materials science. In this study, using a recently proposed design principle of linear ME materials, which is based on the combination of local structural asymmetry and collinear antiferromagnetism, we demonstrate that an anion-deficient fluorite derivative, Mn 3 Ta 2 O 8 , is a new linear ME material. This is evidenced by the onset of magnetic-field-induced electric polarization in its collinear antiferromagnetic phase below T N = 24 K. Furthermore, we also find an antiferroelectric-like phase transition at T S = 55 K, which is attributable to an off-center displacement of magnetic Mn 2+ ions. The present study shows that Mn 3 Ta 2 O 8 is a rare material that exhibits both ME and antiferroelectric-like transitions. Thus, Mn 3 Ta 2 O 8 may provide an opportunity to investigate the physics associated with complicated interactions between magnetic (spin) and electric dipole degrees of freedom.

Magnetoelectric Coupling in a Mn 4 Na–Organic Complex under Pulsed Magnetic Fields up to 73 T

Research on the magnetoelectric (ME) effect (or spin-electric coupling) in molecule-based magnetic materials is a relatively nascent but promising topic. Molecule-based magnetic materials have diverse magnetic functionalities that can be coupled to electrical properties. Here, in this study, we investigate a realization of ME coupling that is fundamental but not heavily studied─the coupling of magnetic spin level crossings to changes in electric polarization. A mixed-valence Mn 4 Na complex with a total ground-state spin S = 5/2 under zero magnetic field and S = 17/2 under high magnetic field undergoes a cascade of ground-state level crossings of the S z states with increasing magnetic field. Magnetization and electrical polarization measurements under pulsed magnetic fields up to 73 T show that each spin level crossing is accompanied by a significant change in electric polarization that is an even function of the applied magnetic field. A molecular Hamiltonian describing antiferromagnetic exchange in a distorted tetrahedron of three Mn III and one Mn II ions matches the data well. We conclude that the ME coupling is caused by magnetostriction within the polar molecule as it distorts to lower its magnetic exchange energy.

Spin dynamics in linear magnetoelectric material Mn 3 Ta 2 O 8

We performed inelastic neutron scattering experiments on single crystal samples of a linear magnetoelectric material Mn 3 Ta 2 O 8 , which exhibits a collinear antiferromagnetic order, to reveal the spin dynamics. Numerous modes observed in the neutron spectra were reasonably reproduced by linear spin-wave theory on the basis of the spin Hamiltonian including eight Heisenberg interactions and an easy-plane type single-ion anisotropy. In conclusion, the presence of strong frustration was found in the identified spin Hamiltonian.

Ferromagnetic moment in the magnetoelectric antiferromagnet Co 4 ⁢Ta 2 ⁢O 9 : Evidence of the 𝑃⁢1 magnetic space group

Exploring ferromagnetic moments in magnetoelectric materials is of both fundamental and technological importance. It enables the control of the correlated state using an uncompensated moment. However, its material realization is challenging owing to its exclusive microscopic mechanisms. Here, we report a nearly isotropic ferromagnetic moment in the magnetoelectric antiferromagnet Co 4 ⁢Ta 2 ⁢O 9 , by performing dc and ac magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, and neutron diffraction measurements on identical single crystals. Combined with the group theory analysis, we demonstrate a 𝑃⁢1 magnetic space group. This implies that physical activities can occur along any crystallographic direction, which explains the unusual magnetoelectric property of Co 4⁢ Ta 2⁢ O 9 . The ground state is classified as the M-type altermagnet based on the magnetic point group. Our study provides essential information to resolve the debate on the magnetic ground state and understand the magnetoelectric properties of the related compound with the prospect of observing and examining the 𝑃⁢1 magnetic space group or ferromagnet in ferroelectrics.

Noncollinear magnetic structure and magnetoelectric coupling in buckled honeycomb Co 4 Nb 2 O 9 : A single-crystal neutron diffraction study

Through an analysis of single-crystal neutron diffraction data, we present the magnetic structure and magnetoelectric properties of Co 4 Nb 2 O 9 under various magnetic fields. In zero field, neutron diffraction experiments below T N =27K reveal that the Co 2+ moments order in the (ab) plane without any spin canting along the c axis, manifested by the magnetic symmetry C2/c'. Along each Co chain parallel to the c axis, the moments of nearest-neighbor Co atoms order ferromagnetically with a small cant away from the next-nearest-neighbor Co moments. Under the applied magnetic field H ∥ a, three magnetic domains were aligned with their major magnetic moments perpendicular to the magnetic field with no other observable magnetic transitions. The influences of magnetic fields on the magnetic structures associated with the observed magnetoelectric coupling are discussed.

Theory and phase-field simulations of electrical control of spin cycloids in a multiferroic

Cycloidal spin orders are common in multiferroics. One of the prototypical examples is BiFeO 3 (BFO) which shows a large polarization and a cycloidal antiferromagnetic (AFM) order at room temperature. Here, we employ Landau theory and phase-field simulations to analyze the coupled switching dynamics of polarization and cycloidal AFM orders in BFO. We identify 14 types of transitional spin structures between two cycloids and nine electric-field-induced spin switching paths. We demonstrate the electric-field-induced rotation of wave vectors of the cycloidal spins and discover two types of cycloidal spin switching dynamics: fast local spin flips and slow rotation of wave vectors. Also, we construct roadmaps to achieve the switching between any two spin cycloids through multistep applications of electric fields. Furthermore, this paper provides a theoretical framework for the phenomenological description of spin cycloids and a fundamental understanding of the switching mechanisms to achieve electrical control of magnetic orders.

Magnetic structure and multiferroicity of Sc-substituted hexagonal YbFeO 3

The hexagonal rare-earth ferrite RFeO 3 family represents a unique class of multiferroics exhibiting weak ferromagnetism, and a strong coupling between magnetism and structural trimerization is predicted. However, the hexagonal structure for RFeO 3 remains metastable in conventional conditions. We have succeeded in stabilizing the hexagonal structure of polycrystalline YbFeO 3 by partial Sc substitution of Yb. Using bulk magnetometry and neutron diffraction, we find that Yb 0.42 Sc 0.58 FeO 3 orders into a canted antiferromagnetic state with the Néel temperature T N ~ 165K, below which the Fe 3+ moments form the triangular configuration in the ab plane and their in-plane projections are parallel to the [100] axis, consistent with magnetic space group P6 3 c'm'. It is determined that the spin canting is aligned along the c axis, giving rise to the weak ferromagnetism. Furthermore, the Fe 3+ moments reorient toward a new direction below reorientation temperature T R ~ 40K, satisfying magnetic subgroup P6 3 , while the Yb 3+ moments order independently and ferrimagnetically along the c axis at the characteristic temperature T Yb ~ 15K. Interestingly, reproducible modulation of electric polarization induced by magnetic field at low temperature is achieved, suggesting that the delicate structural distortion associated with two-up/one-down buckling of the Yb/Sc planes and tilting of the FeO 5 bipyramids may mediate the coupling between ferroelectric and magnetic orders under magnetic field. Furthermore, the present work represents substantial progress to search for high-temperature multiferroics in hexagonal ferrites and related materials.

Built-in electric field control of magnetic coupling in van der Waals semiconductors

Electrical control of magnetism in a two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor is of great interest for emerging nanoscale low-dissipation spintronic devices. Here, we propose a general approach of tuning magnetic coupling and anisotropy of a van der Waals (vdW) 2D magnetic semiconductor via a built-in electric field generated by the adsorption of superatomic ions. Using first-principles calculations, we predict a significant enhancement of ferromagnetic coupling and a great change of magnetic anisotropy in 2D semiconductors when they are sandwiched between superatomic cations and anions. The magnetic coupling is directly affected by the built-in electric field, which lifts the energy levels of mediated ligands' orbitals and enhances the superexchange interactions. Finally, these findings will be of interest for ionic gating controlled ferromagnets and magnetoelectronics based on vdW 2D semiconductors.

Manipulation of spin orientation via ferroelectric switching in Fe-doped Bi 2 WO 6 from first principles

Atomic-scale control of spins by electric fields is highly desirable for future technological applications. Magnetically doped Aurivillius-phase oxides present one route to achieve this, with magnetic ions substituted into the ferroelectric structure at dilute concentrations, resulting in spin-charge coupling. However, there has been minimal exploration of the ferroelectric switching pathways in this materials class, limiting predictions of the influence of an electric field on magnetic spins in the structure. Here, we determine the ferroelectric switching pathways of the end member of the Aurivillius phase family, Bi 2 WO 6 , using a combination of group theoretic analysis and density functional theory calculations. We find that in the ground state P2 1 ab phase, a two-step switching pathway via C2 and Cm intermediate phases provides the lowest energy barrier. Considering iron substitutions on the W site in Bi 2 WO 6 , we determine the spin easy axis. Finally, by tracking the change in spin directionality during ferroelectric switching, we find that a 90° switch in the polarization direction leads to a 112° reorientation of the spin easy axis. The low-symmetry crystal-field environment of Bi 2 WO 6 and magnetoelastic coupling on the magnetic dopant provide a route to spin control via an applied electric field.

Anisotropic spin-wave excitations in multiferroic BiFeO 3

Polarized inelastic neutron-scattering experiments have been performed to elucidate the anisotropic behavior of the low-energy spin-wave excitations in a multiferroic BiFeO 3 , which shows a cycloidal spin structure below 640 K. Using neutron polarization analysis for single magnetic domain crystals, magnetic excitation modes in and out of the cycloidal plane below 6 meV were separated successfully. The magnetic excitation spectra were analyzed using linear spin-wave theory. The low-energy magnon density of states consist of several magnon modes, including the two anisotropic modes, Φ and Ψ modes, distributed in and out of the cycloidal plane, respectively, which were previously observed using optical spectroscopies. Furthermore, there are other magnon modes that are not active in optical measurements. Additionally, a model spin Hamiltonian, which reproduces the spin-wave frequencies observed using optical spectroscopies, explains the overall spectra reasonably well.

Multiple ferroic orders and toroidal magnetoelectricity in the chiral magnet BaCoSiO 4

Discovering ferroic phase transitions and their consequential physical properties is at the core of condensed matter science due to rich physics and tremendous technological promises. BaCoSiO 4 , a chiral antiferromagnet, belongs to the tetrahedron-based chiral system, and exhibits diverse ferroic orders with coexisting chirality, polarity, trimerization, ferrorotational distortions, and magnetism. However, their mutual couplings remain to be explored. Here in this work, we used a comprehensive combination of several experimental tools—in situ x-ray, transmission electron microscopy, magnetization, and magnetoelectric measurements of single-crystalline BaCoSiO 4 —to investigate hierarchical phase transitions, their microscopic domain structures, and the resulting magnetoelectricity. We found that two different structural chiralities develop through distinct processes: global homochirality and local heterochirality induced by the ferrorotational distortions on top of existing polarization. In addition, magnetic chirality, with the simultaneous presence of net magnetic moment and magnetic toroidal moment, develops below 3.2 K due to the global chirality, which leads to magnetic field tunable toroidal magnetoelectricity. Thus, BaCoSiO 4 exhibits uniquely all four types of ferroic orders and provides an avenue to explore, for example, tunable or dynamic coupling of multiple ferroic degrees of freedom.

Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction induced magnetoelectric coupling in a tetrahedral molecular spin-frustrated system

We have investigated magnetoelectric (ME) coupling in the single-molecule magnet Mn 4 Te 4 (PEt 3 ) 4 with tetrahedral spin frustration. Our density functional studies found that an electric dipole moment can emerge with various noncollinear spin orderings. The forms of spin-dependent dipole are determined and consistent with that in noncentrosymmetric magnets driven by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Writing a parameterized spin Hamiltonian, after solving for eigenvalues and eigenstates, we quantified the ME coupling by calculating the thermal average of the electric and magnetic susceptibilities, which can be influenced by external magnetic and electric fields, respectively. The quadratic relations are expected to be observable in experiments.

Magnetoresistance anomaly during the electrical triggering of a metal-insulator transition

Phase separation naturally occurs in a variety of magnetic materials and it often has a major impact on both electric and magnetotransport properties. In resistive switching systems, phase separation can be created on demand by inducing local switching, which provides an opportunity to tune the electronic and magnetic state of the device by applying voltage. Here we explore the magnetotransport properties in the ferromagnetic oxide La 0.7 ⁢Sr 0.3 ⁢MnO 3 (LSMO) during the electrical triggering of an intrinsic metal-insulator transition (MIT), which produces volatile resistive switching. This switching occurs in a characteristic spatial pattern, i.e., the formation of a high-resistance barrier perpendicular to the current flow, enabling an electrically actuated ferromagnetic-paramagnetic-ferromagnetic phase separation. At the threshold voltage of the MIT triggering, both anisotropic and colossal magnetoresistances exhibit anomalies including a large increase in magnitude and a sign flip. Computational analysis revealed that these anomalies originate from the coupling between the switching-induced phase separation state and the intrinsic magnetoresistance of LSMO. Furthermore, this work demonstrates that driving the MIT material into an out-of-equilibrium resistive switching state provides the means for electrical control of the magnetotransport phenomena.

Local atomic and magnetic structure of multiferroic (Sr,Ba)⁢(Mn,Ti)⁢O 3

Here, we present a detailed study of the local atomic and magnetic structure of the type-I multiferroic perovskite system (Sr,Ba)(Mn,Ti)O 3 using x-ray and neutron pair distribution function (PDF) analysis, polarized neutron scattering, and muon spin relaxation (μSR) techniques. The atomic PDF analysis reveals widespread nanoscale tetragonal distortions of the crystal structure even in the paraelectric phase with average cubic symmetry, corresponding to incipient ferroelectricity in the local structure. Magnetic PDF analysis, polarized neutron scattering, and μSR likewise confirm the presence of short-range antiferromagnetic correlations in the paramagnetic state, which grow in magnitude as the temperature approaches the magnetic transition. We show that these short-range magnetic correlations coincide with a reduction of the tetragonal (i.e., ferroelectric) distortion in the average structure, suggesting that short-range magnetism can play an important role in magnetoelectric and/or magnetostructural phenomena even without genuine long-range magnetic order. The reduction of the tetragonal distortion scales linearly with the local magnetic order parameter, pointing to spontaneous linear magnetoelectric coupling in this system. These findings provide greater insight into the multiferroic properties of (Sr,Ba)(Mn,Ti)O 3 and demonstrate the importance of investigating the local atomic and magnetic structure to gain a deeper understanding of the intertwined degrees of freedom in multiferroics.

Magnetic structure and magnetoelectric coupling in the antiferromagnet Co 5⁢ (Te⁢O 3 ) 4 ⁢Cl 2

The van der Waals (vdW) layered multiferroics, which host simultaneous ferroelectric and magnetic orders, have attracted attention not only for their potentials to be utilized in nanoelectric devices and spintronics, but also offer alternative opportunities for emergent physical phenomena. To date, the vdW layered multiferroic materials are still very rare. In this work, we have investigated the magnetic structure and magnetoelectric (ME) effects in Co 5 ⁢(Te⁢O 3 ) 4 ⁢Cl 2 , a promising multiferroic compound with antiferromagnetic (AFM) Néel point T N ~18 K. The neutron-powder diffraction reveals the noncoplanar AFM state with preferred Néel vector along the c axis, while a spin reorientation occurring between 8 and 15 K is identified, which results from the distinct temperature dependence of the nonequivalent Co site's moment in Co 5 ⁢(Te⁢O 3 ) 4 ⁢Cl 2 . Moreover, it is found that Co 5 ⁢(Te⁢O 3 ) 4 ⁢Cl 2 is one of the best vdW multiferroics studied so far in terms of the multiferroic performance. The measured linear ME coefficient exhibits the emergent oscillation dependence of the angle between magnetic field and electric field, and the maximal value is as big as 45 ps/m. Finally, it is suggested that Co 5 ⁢(Te⁢O 3 ) 4 ⁢Cl 2 is an appreciated platform for exploring the emergent multiferroicity in vdW layered compounds.
