Surface Meteorological Station - North Bend, OR (OTH) - Raw Data

A variety of instruments are used to measure various quantities related to meteorology, precipitation, and radiation near the Earth’s surface. Typically, a standard suite of instruments is deployed to monitor meteorological state variables.

Post-processed surface meteorological, air-sea flux, SST, wave, and ship navigation/position merged data from NOAA Ship Pisces

These are post-processed surface data from the NOAA Ship Pisces, merged from several instruments. They consist of meteorological, ocean, ship navigation/position, and surface air-sea flux quantities calculated at three different time frequencies. Because the averaging of directions can be complex, they are provided as a courtesy. R1 in the filename indicates "revision 1" or version 1. R2 will include surface waves (TBD).

CROCUS Air Quality Data at Northeastern Illinois University Rooftop

This dataset is from the Department of Energy Office of Science funded project, Community Research on Urban and Climate Science (CROCUS) (https://crocus-urban.org/). The AQT (Vaisala AQT530) instrument provides observations on meteorological conditions, including particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10), gas species concentrations (NO, NO2, O3, CO), and environment temperature and moisture. These measurements are critical for understanding air quality. These measurements are useful for understanding changes in aerosol properties, air quality research, and comparing to model experiments especially in urban environments.Datasets are stored in the netCDF data format, and we we encourage users to make use the associated toolkits available from Unidata (https://www.unidata.ucar.edu/software/netcdf/), Project Pythia (https://foundations.projectpythia.org/core/data-formats/netcdf-cf.html), and our “Instrument Cookbooks” (https://crocus-urban.github.io/instrument-cookbooks) for more information on how to process the metadata-rich datasets.

Utah FORGE Project 3-2417: Meteorological Data During 2023 Completion/Circulation

This preliminary data archive includes meteorological data recorded at the Utah FORGE facility over the period of time including the completion/cementing of well 78-16B and the initial 2023 circulation test, largely occurring in June/July/August of 2023. This information may prove useful for understanding seismic and other instrumentation responses during these activities. The meteorological station was installed June 23rd, 2023 during drilling; the circulation test occurred in mid July of 2023 (July 4-19). The included files span this period. All sensors were installed at the 16 pad and hence reflect weather state at the site. This dataset was acquired by the FOGMORE R&D project (Fiber Optic MOnitoring for Reservoir Evolution), Utah FORGE R&D Project 3-2417.

Linking Small-Scale Flight Manoeuvers and Density Profiles to the Vertical Movement of Insects in the Nocturnal Stable Boundary Layer

Huge numbers of insects migrate over considerable distances in the stably-stratified night-time atmosphere with great consequences for ecological processes, biodiversity, ecosystem services and pest management. We used a combination of meteorological radar and lidar instrumentation at a site in Oklahoma, USA, to take a new look at the general assistance migrants receive from both vertical and horizontal airstreams during their long-distance flights. Movement in the nocturnal boundary layer (NBL) presents very different challenges for migrants compared to those prevailing in the daytime convective boundary layer, but we found that Lagrangian stochastic modelling is effective at predicting flight manoeuvers in both cases. A key feature for insect transport in the NBL is the frequent formation of a thin layer of fast-moving air – the low-level jet. Modelling suggests that insects can react rapidly to counteract vertical air movements and this mechanism explains how migrants are retained in the jet for long periods (e.g. overnight, and perhaps for several hours early in the morning). This results in movements over much longer distances than are likely in convective conditions, and is particularly significant for the reintroduction of pests to northern regions where they are seasonally absent due to low winter temperatures.

CROCUS Air Quality Data at Argonne National Laboratory Prairie Site

The AQT (Vaisala AQT530) instrument provides observations on meteorological conditions, including particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10), gas species concentrations (NO, NO2, O3, CO), and environment temperature and moisture. These measurements are critical for understanding air quality. These measurements are useful for understanding changes in aerosol properties, air quality research, and comparing to model experiments especially in urban environments. These measurements are collected at the Argonne Testbed for Multiscale Observational Science (ATMOS), a prairie field site at Argonne National Laboratory in Lemont, Illinois. Data is available in the netCDF data format, we encourage data users review documentation through Project Pythia to understand how to work with netCDF data https://foundations.projectpythia.org/core/data-formats/netcdf-cf.html. Each file contains one day's worth of data (24 hours, starting at 0000 UTC). The data is aggregated into daily frequency to make it easier to process multiple days, and compress the higher-resolution fields. File naming convention includes the project (CROCUS), location (atmos), data level (raw, a1), date (year, month, day), and hour (0000).

New Particle Formation Event Dataset at the Southern Great Plains (SGP) Observatory from 2018 to 2023

This data set contains observations of new particle formation (NPF) events collected at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Southern Great Plains (SGP) observatory from 2018 to 2023. Measurements include particle number size distributions, radiance measurements, and associated meteorological variables from onsite instrumentation relevant for identifying and characterizing NPF events. Events were identified using standardized criteria and documented to support investigations of aerosol nucleation, growth dynamics, and their interactions with local atmospheric conditions. The data set provides a multi-year record that enables evaluation of seasonal and interannual variability in NPF occurrence and intensity at a mid-continental site. These data are intended to support studies of aerosol-cloud-climate interactions and model evaluation within both ARM and the broader atmospheric science community. More information can be found within the README_NPF_SGP_2018_2023.docx file.
