Abstract for CRADA among NETL, Ohio University, and MetalKraft Technologies, LLC

The electrical grid faces challenges for meeting accelerated electricity demand arising from the electrification of building and transportation sectors. According to the DOE Grid Development Office, 70% of transmission lines are approaching the end of their lifecycle. The aging grid and insufficient transmission capacity necessitate the development of new technologies to improve overall grid performance. The conventional conductors used for electrical transmission lines suffer from substantial energy losses, high costs and low durability. These inefficiencies result in higher operational costs, increased energy waste, and difficulties in managing power flow. Improving the grid will require metals and composites with higher electrical conductivity and strength than the materials currently used. This CRADA will develop technologies to improve the grid by fabricating carbon metal composites with improved electrical, structural, and mechanical properties in comparison to metals that do not contain carbon additives. The composites will be made by incorporating carbon materials (graphite, graphene) into aluminum, copper, and other metals. The work will focus primarily on improving material properties that enhance the performance of these materials in electrical conductor applications.

Quality Guidelines for Energy System Studies: Carbon Dioxide Transport and Storage Costs in NETL Studies

Transport, storage, and combined T&S costs are reported in this guideline as first-year break even (FYBE) costs in real 2023 dollars per metric ton (tonne) (2023$/tonne). These FYBE costs are from the perspective of a CO 2 pipeline project owner and/or a CO 2 saline storage project owner, and represent a minimum price the owner(s) can charge a CO 2 capture project owner over 30 operating years to transport and/or store a tonne of CO 2 and remain economically viable.

Utilizing Ontology Structures To Curate the DOE-NETL Carbon Storage Open Database

The specialized ontology for the Carbon Storage Open Database will enable more rapid assignment of appropriate symbology standards for visualization improvements, optimize topical and spatial tagging within keywords, and improve flexibility for utilization in existing data repositories such as EDX. This effort also aims to establish a foundation for utilization of ontologies for organization of other data related to geologic carbon storage in the future.

Abstract for Modification 55 between NETL and ExxonMobil Technology and Engineering Company to Multi-Project CRADA AGMT-0922

This joint initiative aims to understand changes to reservoir material properties upon exposure to CO 2 at reservoir conditions, including pressure, temperature, and subsurface brines. The main goal is to understand geochemical changes following exposure as may be relevant for Enhanced Oil Recovery. The proposed tasks will measure selected properties of unconventional reservoir materials prior to and after exposure under aforementioned conditions.

Quality Guidelines for Energy System Studies: Capital Cost Scaling Methodology: Revision 4b Report

The National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) regularly updates legacy analysis with new studies and cases as the Department of Energy objectives change, technology performance improves, costs are reduced, regulations change, market drivers are established, fuel prices fluctuate, and any number of other relevant factors vary in the market. As legacy studies are updated by NETL, the underlying performance and cost of the cases presented changes, and as such, the methods for interpreting and scaling the cost estimates change. Therefore, it is important that NETL maintain public guidance documents associated with different sets of cost estimates that delineate how a specific set, based on report vintage and/or year published, should be scaled. This Quality Guidelines for Energy System Studies report, providing guidance on capital cost scaling, should generally be applied to NETL case costs included in the report “Cost and Performance Baseline for Fossil Energy Plants Volume 1: Bituminous Coal and Natural Gas to Electricity Revision 4b,” (NETL, 2025) or any cases derived from the cases presented in the referenced report.
