Cook Inlet Tidal Energy Resource Characterization Effort

Located in the southcentral region of Alaska, Cook Inlet contains one of the greatest tidal resources in the world. A pinch point in the channel increases the water velocity and provides an excellent site for a potential tidal farm. Access to affordable, clean power would provide a cascade of economic benefits to Alaskans, who face some of the highest energy costs and most extreme climates in the U.S. NREL researchers are collaborating with universities and private partners to gain a better understanding of the underwater environment to pave the way for development of an efficient, durable tidal farm. This summer, they will deploy a buoy in Cook Inlet to characterize the site.

The Regional Energy Deployment System (ReEDS): An Open-Access Model for the North American Electricity System

The Regional Energy Deployment System (ReEDS) model is NREL’s flagship capacity expansion planning tool for the electric power sector in North America. Originally developed in 2001, ReEDS has been used primarily by NREL researchers to conduct high-profile analysis of the potential evolution of the electricity system. In September 2019, the core model is being released for public use. In this presentation, we provide an overview of the model architecture, key model features, data sources, lessons learned, and sample model results for the North American electric power system.

Wave Energy Power Take-Off Validation with a Hydraulicly Actuated Rotary Dynamometer and a Bidirectional High-Power DC Supply: Preprint

There are many organizations working towards the commercialization of wave energy converter technologies and are advancing their designs through the technology readiness levels (TRLs). A critical step before the field deployment of prototype wave energy converters is the validation of the subsystems and components that are contained in the wave energy converter through laboratory testing and performance characterization. In 2021, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) developed and demonstrated a system for testing power takeoffs (PTO) with a low-speed, high-torque dynamometer and a grid-tied high-power DC power source and sink before field deployment. The hydraulic dynamometer allows for the simulation of PTO actuation from wave motion and is capable of a wide range of wave periods and heights which are represented as various speeds and torques from the dynamometer. The high-power bidirectional power supply allows for hardware in the loop and controller in the loop testing to be conducted on WEC power electronics. This presentation was made to describe the methods used by NREL research staff to test all components and sub-systems in the PTO of a novel wave energy converter before field deployment.

Growing Insulation in Alaska

Buildings produce 40% of all carbon emissions in the U.S. This includes the energy needed to heat, cool, and power the nation's buildings and the energy used to manufacture, ship, and assemble the construction materials. In extreme climates and remote regions, buildings use even more energy, as building materials must be produced and shipped farther to the site, increasing the greenhouse gas emissions embodied in the buildings. The U.S. National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is developing technologies that reduce how much energy our buildings use and how much carbon goes into them in the first place. NREL researchers teamed up with the Biomaterials Laboratory at the University of Alaska, U.S. Forest Service Forest Products Lab, and the VTT Centre of Finland on a three-year project to "grow" insulation using trees in Alaska - improving the efficiency of buildings by providing envelope retrofit options using local resources.

A Case Study in NREL DERMS Asset Management Implementation

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and Smarter Grid Solutions (SGS) plan to present a case study on their implementation of SGS' Strata Grid Distributed Energy Resource Management System at NREL's Energy Systems Integration Facility (ESIF). The ESIF is one of the nation's premier energy systems integration laboratory facilities focused on development and deployment of clean energy technologies and resilient delivery systems. NREL looked for a DERMS to install at the ESIF that is capable of replicating real world scenarios to control and monitor distributed devices from small residential scale to the grid substation level. The DERMS system demonstrates the use cases of beneficial operation and coordination of modern grid devices, leverage DERs for improved grid planning and operation, demand-side management and customer engagement through bidirectional communication with utilities and energy market operations. The presentation will cover the delivery strategy of NREL and SGS, how the use cases help NREL's research, and NREL and SGS plan to expand the system and use cases.

Los Angeles 100% Clean Energy Equity Strategies

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory and Los Angeles Department of Water and Power set out to identify strategies to improve equity in LA's transition to 100% clean energy. Through social science research, NREL summarized underserved community member challenges and solutions from listening sessions and community-based organizations. NREL modeled future scenarios for solar, transportation electrification, rates, building technologies, and the distribution grid to identify strategies that improved community-prioritized equity metrics. Findings provide specific strategies relevant for LA and elsewhere to improve equity and affordability in achieving 100% clean energy.

Sustainable Port Operations: Powered by NREL

Seaports are vital economic hubs that allow the United States to compete on a global scale. But the heavy vehicles and cargo equipment that enable their operations also emit harmful air pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions. For nearly two decades, National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) researchers have worked toward comprehensive seaport decarbonization. They fuse world-class analysis with deep vehicle and transportation systems knowledge to guide strategic deployment of low- and zero-emissions vehicles, charging and refueling infrastructure, and grid improvements. Together, these capabilities can enable sustainable port operations. This fact sheet outlines major seaport and airport decarbonization capabilities across the laboratory, including: fleet research, energy data, and insights for decarbonization; comprehensive hydrogen infrastructure deployment; optimized charging through grid integration; strategic blueprinting for clean, optimized technology deployment; and integrating diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility considerations into decarbonization efforts.

NREL Marine Energy Desalination Research and Development Portfolio: Preprint

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) Water Power Technologies Office (WPTO), has developed a unique R&D approach to advance marine energy desalination. Desalination is a foundational investment within WPTO's Powering the Blue Economy portfolio, and was the first investment within this portfolio. NREL's marine energy desalination spans techno-economic feasibility studies, numerical modeling, and laboratory testing at the component and subsystem level, as well as development of the Hydraulic and Electric Reverse Osmosis Wave Energy Converter (HERO WEC). This multilayered approach enables an innovative feedback loop where the data and lessons learned from laboratory and field experiments are used to refine modeling tools and analysis techniques, prioritize out-year activities, and refine strategic directions within NREL and across the WPTO portfolio. The primary objective of the NREL-led research is to identify key barriers associated with the commercialization of wave-powered desalination and develop solutions that can be adopted by the marine energy industry. In parallel, these R&D activities can help inform technical assistance and support of industry and academic technologies. These two tracks help build a common solver community approach, while also identifying key stakeholders, government agencies, and other organizations outside of the marine sector that will be necessary for developing a robust industry.
