Pressure transducer

Pressure-sensitive transducer, consisting of a series of spindle-supported electrically conductive metal washers connected to electrical sensing circuitry, determines the force exerted between a mounting bolt and nut on relatively fragile components.

Straight-line IC removal tool

Tool operates by applying force perpendicularly to socket plane. Tool can be operated in cramped or confined quarters and can effect integrated circuit removal without damage. It may also be useful to hold nut or bolt in confined space while tightening, when it is not possible to use conventional tool.

Trends in mechanical fasteners

Some of the specialty fasteners which are enjoying increasing usage are: thread rolling screws, self drilling and tapping screws, locking screws, tamperproof fasteners, and flanged bolts and nuts. The development of an optimum metric fastener system is recommended for future fastener manufacturing.

Versatile modular scaffolds

Movable and fixed modular scaffolds can be tailored to most scaffolding needs by interconnecting only 4 basic structural elements: platforms, rails, vertical-support angles, and stiffener. Standard nuts and bolts are used to join elements, simplifying construction, and reducing costs. Scaffolds are rigid and can be made any length. They are stable on unlevel ground and can extend to well over 50 feet in height. Scaffolds allow for internal elevators and for wheels and air mounts so that same elements can be used for standing or movable scaffold.

Fastening Parts Having Mismatched Thermal Coefficients

Fastener eliminates thermal stresses and maintains snug fit. Conicalhead bolt and metal washer main components of fastener that keeps constant tension on carbon/carbon parts regardless of thermal stress. Fastener used in cases where fastened parts have unmatched thermalexpansion coefficients. Does not become looser or tighter as conventional bolts and nuts or rivets do at elevated temperatures.

High-Precision Coupling Mechanism Operable By Robots

Coupling mechanism has features making it easily operable by hand and suitable for operation by robots: tolerates some initial misalignment, imposes precise final alignment, and protects itself against overtightening. Typically used to mount equipment module on structure. Mechanism includes kinematic mounts, which tolerate small initial misalignment and enforce precise final alignment as two assemblies brought together. Clamping force applied to kinematic mounts via two flexible plates. Bolt and nut tightened on flexible plates to impose spring clamping load. Repeatability of interface tested and found to be better than forty-millionths of inch.

Pivoting-Head Wrench

Wrench ends pivot so it can be used to loosen or tighten nuts or bolts in confined spaces. One end equipped with open-end socket; other end, with double-hexagon socket. Heads pivot on pins. Pins fit tightly so heads do not flop; friction on pins sufficient to hold heads in positions until rotated intentionally.

Spring-Tab Lock Washer

Improved spring-tab lock washer offers alternative to such positive-locking devices as cotter pins and lock wires and to conventional split-ring lock washers. Does not dig into fastened parts with sharp edges; less likely to inflict scratches causing cracks. Contains three winglike spring tabs and three alignment pips, pressed into mating dimples in surface of part to be fastened. Spring tabs on lock washer allow only clockwise rotation (tightening) of bolt or nut.

Investigation of the effects of extravehicular activity (EVA) gloves on performance

The objective was to assess the effects of extravehicular activity (EVA) gloves at different pressures on human hand capabilities. A factorial experiment was performed in which three types of EVA gloves were tested at five pressure differentials. The independent variables tested in this experiment were gender, glove type, pressure differential, and glove make. Six subjects participated in an experiment where a number of dexterity measures, namely time to tie a rope, and the time to assemble a nut and bolt were recorded. Tactility was measured through a two point discrimination test. The results indicate that with EVA gloves strength is reduced by nearly 50 percent, there is a considerable reduction in dexterity, performance decrements increase with increasing pressure differential, and some interesting gender glove interactions were observed, some of which may have been due to the extent (or lack of) fit of the glove to the hand. The implications for the designer are discussed.

Tool For Driving Many Fasteners Simultaneously

Proposed tool tightens or loosens several bolts, screws, nuts, or other threaded fasteners arranged in circle on compressor head, automotive wheel, pipe-end flange, or similar object. Enables assembly or disassembly in fraction of time needed to tighten fasteners one at a time. Simultaneously applies same torque to all fasteners, preventing distortion and enhancing reliability. Concept not limited to circular fastener patterns. Adapted to rectangular configurations like on engine intake manifolds, by adding gears to drive train to provide proper spacing. Designed to deliver fixed or adjustable maximum torque. To ensure even seal loading, piston pressure simultaneously ramped from initial to final values to maintain relatively constant torque loading on all fasteners until final specifications limit achieved.

High-Torque, Lightweight, Pneumatically Driven Wrench For Small Spaces

Pneumatically driven wrench provides torque up to 3,000 lb. per ft. in small space. Designed to reach into 2.6 x 2.75 x 6 in. pocket. Weighs approximately 25 lbs. Includes reversible pneumatic motor (electric motor could be used instead) and slip clutch. Also includes device indicating total angle through which wrench turned bolt or nut. This feature used for turn-of-the-nut tightening method.

NASA Task Load Index (TLX): Computerized Version - Volume 1.0

This booklet and the accompanying diskette contain the materials necessary to collect subjective workload assessments with the NASA Task Load Index on IBM PC compatible microcomputers. This procedure for collecting workload ratings was developed by the Human Performance Group at NASA Ames Research Center during a three year research effort that involved more than 40 laboratory, simulation, and inflight experiments Although the technique is still undergoing evaluation, this package is being distributed to allow other researchers to use it in their own experiments Comments or suggestions about the procedure would be greatly appreciated This package is intended to fill a "nuts and bolts" function of describing the procedure. A bibliography provides background information about previous empirical findings and the logic that supports the procedure.

Self Locking Fasteners

Detroit Tool Industries' Spiralock threading tool solves a major industrial problem, fasteners coming loose under vibration. Loosening is caused between the flanks of the bolt and nut threads. This lateral movement releases the locking friction that holds the joint together. Spiralock is a uniquely designed female thread form which used with male fasteners of standard thread form provides a self locking action that prevents the lateral movement, and thus makes the threaded joint highly resistant to the effects of vibration. Additionally, a thread contract runs the entire length of the nut, offering greater stress resistance than earlier fasteners.
