Electronic and magnetic phase diagrams of the Kitaev quantum spin liquid candidate Na 2 Co 2 TeO 6

The 3⁢d 7 Co 2+ -based insulating magnet Na 2 ⁢Co 2 ⁢TeO 6 has recently been reported to have strong Kitaev interactions on a honeycomb lattice and is thus being considered as a Kitaev quandum spin liquid candidate. However, due to the existence of other types of interactions, a spontaneous long-range magnetic order occurs. This order is suppressed by applied magnetic fields leading to a succession of phases and ultimately saturation of the magnetic moments. The precise phase diagram, the nature of the phases, and the possibility that one of the field-induced phases is a Kitaev quantum spin liquid phase are still a matter of debate. Here, in this study, we measured an extensive set of physical properties to build the complete temperature-field phase diagrams to magnetic saturation at 10 T for magnetic fields along the a and a* axes, and a partial phase diagram up to 60 T along c. We probe the phases using magnetization, specific heat, magnetocaloric effect, magnetostriction, dielectric constant, and electric polarization, which is a symmetry-sensitive probe. With these measurements, we identify all the previously incomplete phase boundaries and find additional high-field phase boundaries. We find strong magnetoelectric coupling in the dielectric constant and moderate magnetostrictive coupling at several phase boundaries. Furthermore, we detect the symmetry of the magnetic order using electrical polarization measurements under magnetic fields. Based on our analysis, the absence of electric polarization under zero or finite magnetic field in any of the phases or after any combination of magnetic/electric field cooling suggests that a zigzag spin structure is more likely than a triple-Q spin structure at zero field. Finally, we investigate the hysteresis and first- or second-order nature of each phase transition and its entropy changes. With this information, we establish a map of the magnetic phases of this compound and its magnetic, thermodynamic, and magnetoelectric properties, and discuss where spin liquid or other phases may be sought in future studies.

Disorder-Enriched Magnetic Excitations in a Heisenberg-Kitaev Quantum Magnet Na 2 ⁢Co 2 ⁢TeO 6

Using optical magnetospectroscopy, we investigate the magnetic excitations of Na 2 ⁢Co 2 ⁢TeO 6 in a broad magnetic field range (0 T ≤ B ≤ 17.5 T) at low temperature. Our measurements reveal rich spectra of in-plane magnetic excitations with a surprisingly large number of modes, even in the high-field spin-polarized state. Theoretical calculations find that the Na-occupation disorder in Na 2 ⁢Co 2 ⁢TeO 6 plays a crucial role in generating these modes. Our Letter demonstrates the necessity to consider disorder in the spin environment in the search for Kitaev quantum spin liquid states in practicable materials.

Current understanding of Oxidative Coupling of Methane (OCM) reaction over supported Mn-Na 2 WO 4 catalysts

This perspective reviews the current understanding of the Oxidative Coupling of Methane (OCM) reaction over the supported Mn-Na 2 WO 4 /SiO 2 catalyst, with a focus on recent insights gained from state-of-the-art in-situ and operando spectroscopic characterization and chemical probe experiments under controlled environments. The supported Mn-Na 2 WO 4 /SiO 2 catalyst exhibits dynamic structural changes during the OCM reaction, involving multiple reactive lattice and adsorbed oxygen species, each associated with different oxide phases. These oxygen species play distinct roles in various steps of the OCM mechanism. The catalytic active sites for activation of CH 4 are associated with isolated surface Na-WO x sites on the SiO 2 support and the role of surface MnO x sites on SiO 2 is to oxidatively dehydrogenate C 2 H 6 to C 2 H 4 . Furthermore, this paper provides a detailed discussion of these roles and also introduces new experimental data from Temporal Analysis of Products (TAP) studies to clarify the ongoing debate in the literature regarding the contributions of lattice versus adsorbed oxygen species in OCM reaction product formation. Additionally, recommendations are offered for optimizing the performance of supported Mn-Na 2 WO 4 /SiO 2 catalysts to enhance CH 4 activation and C 2 product selectivity.

Introducing the monoclinic polymorph of the honeycomb magnet Na 2 Co 2 TeO 6

Recent theoretical studies have suggested that the low-energy Hamiltonian of honeycomb cobaltate systems could be dominated by anisotropic Kitaev interactions. Motivated by the theory, a honeycomb layered material Na 2 Co 2 TeO 6 with a hexagonal unit cell has been studied and found to exhibit antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering at 27 K with two spin reorientation transitions at 15 and 5 K. Here we report a monoclinic polymorph of Na 2 Co 2 TeO 6 , also with honeycomb layered structure but with a single AFM transition at 9.6 K and without spin reorientation transitions at lower temperatures. Here, using neutron diffraction, we identify an in-plane zigzag AFM order in the ground state with the spins canted out of the honeycomb planes and ferromagnetically coupled between them. The zigzag order is suppressed by a magnetic field of 6T. The lower critical temperature and field, positive Curie-Weiss temperature, and out-of-plane canting of spins in the monoclinic Na 2 Co 2 TeO 6 suggest enhanced frustration in this polymorph compared to the hexagonal one.

Aqueous spray-drying synthesis of alluaudite Na 2+2x Fe 2–x (SO 4 ) 3 sodium insertion material: studies of electrochemical activity, thermodynamic stability, and humidity-induced phase transition

In pursuit of high-energy density sodium insertion materials, polyanionic frameworks can be designed with tuneable high-voltage operation stemming from inductive effect. Alluaudite Na 2 Fe 2 (SO 4 ) 3 polysulfate forms one such earth-abundant compound registering the highest Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ redox potential (ca. 3.8 V vs. Na/Na + ). While this SO 4 -based system exhibits high voltage operation, it is prone to thermal decomposition and moisture attack leading to hydrated derivatives, making its synthesis cumbersome. Also, the Na–Fe–S–O quaternary system is rich with (anhydrous to hydrated) phase transitions. Herein, we demonstrate scalable aqueous-based spray drying synthesis of alluaudite Na 2+2x Fe 2–x (SO 4 ) 3 sodium insertion material involving the formation of bloedite Na 2 Fe(SO 4 ) 2 ·4H 2 O as an intermediate phase. Moreover, a reversible phase transition from alluaudite to bloedite under controlled conditions of temperature and relative humidity is reported for the first time. Thermochemistry measurements revealed the enthalpies of formation (ΔH° f ) of alluaudite and bloedite are exothermic. Hydrated bloedite (ΔH° f = –117.16 ± 1.10 kJ/mol) was found to be significantly more energetically stable than anhydrous alluaudite (ΔH° f = –11.76 ± 1.25 kJ/mol). The calorimetric data support the observed synthesis and transformation (hydration-dehydration) pathways. Spray drying route led to spherical morphology delivering capacity ~80 mAh/g. Spray drying can be extended for rapid economic synthesis of sulfate class of battery materials.

A Low-Voltage Layered Na 2 TiGeO 5 Anode for Lithium-Ion Battery

Titanium-based anode materials have achieved much progress with the wide studies in lithium-ion batteries. However, these known materials usually possess high discharge voltage platforms and limited energy densities. In this work, a titanium-based oxide of Na 2 TiGeO 5 with layered structure, two-dimensional lamellar frame and exposed highly active (001) facet, exhibiting good electrochemical performance in terms of high capacity (410 mAh g –1 with a current density of 50 mA g –1 ), excellent rate capability and cycling stability with no obvious capacity attenuation after 4000 cycles, is reported. The appropriate discharge voltage plateau at around 0.2 V endows the Na 2 TiGeO 5 anode material high security compared with graphite and high energy density compared with spinel Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 . Combining the electrochemical tests and the density functional theory calculations, the Li + storage mechanism of Na 2 TiGeO 5 is elucidated and the conversion reaction process is revealed. More importantly, this study provides a way to develop low-voltage and high-capacity titanium-based anode materials for efficient energy storage.

Facile synthesis and phase stability of Cu-based Na 2 Cu(SO 4 ) 2 · x H 2 O ( x = 0–2) sulfate minerals as conversion type battery electrodes

Mineral exploration forms a key approach for unveiling functional battery electrode materials. The synthetic preparation of naturally found minerals and their derivatives can aid in designing of new electrodes. Herein, saranchinaite Na 2 Cu(SO 4 ) 2 and its hydrated derivative kröhnkite Na 2 Cu(SO 4 ) 2 ·2H 2 O bisulfate minerals have been prepared using a facile spray drying route for the first time. The phase stability relation during the (de)hydration process was examined synergising in situ X-ray diffraction and thermochemical studies. Kröhnkite forms the thermodynamically stable phase as the hydration of saranchinaite to kröhnkite is highly exothermic (-51.51 ± 0.63 kJ mol -1 ). Structurally, kröhnkite offers a facile 2D pathway for Na+ ion migration resulting in 20 times higher total conductivity than saranchinaite at 60 °C. Both compounds exhibited a conversion redox mechanism for Li-ion storage with the first discharge capacity exceeding 650 mA h g -1 (at 2 mA g -1 vs. Li + /Li) upon discharge up to 0.05 V. Post-mortem analysis revealed that the presence of metallic Cu in the discharged state is responsible for high irreversibility during galvanostatic cycling. This study reaffirms the exploration of Cu-based polyanionic sulfates, which while having limited (de)insertion properties, can be harnessed for conversion-based electrode materials for batteries.

Prediction of exotic magnetic states in the alkali-metal quasi-one-dimensional iron selenide compound Na 2 FeSe 2

The magnetic and electronic phase diagram of a model for the quasi-one-dimensional alkali-metal iron selenide compound Na 2 FeSe 2 is presented. The novelty of this material is that the valence of iron is Fe 2+ , contrary to most other iron-chain compounds with valence Fe 3+ . Using first-principles techniques, we developed a three-orbital tight-binding model that reproduces the ab initio band structure near the Fermi level. Including Hubbard and Hund couplings and studying the model via the density-matrix renormalization group and Lanczos methods, we constructed the ground-state phase diagram. A robust region where the block state ↑↑↓↓↑↑↓↓ is stabilized was unveiled. The analog state in iron ladders, employing 2×2 ferromagnetic blocks, is by now well established, but in chains a block magnetic order has not been observed yet in real materials. The phase diagram also contains a large region of canonical staggered spin order ↑↓↑↓↑↓↑ at very large Hubbard repulsion. At the block-to-staggered transition region, an exotic phase is stabilized with a mixture of both states: an inhomogeneous orbital-selective charge density wave with the exotic spin configuration ↑↑↓↑↓↓↑↓. Our predictions for Na 2 FeSe 2 may guide crystal growers and neutron-scattering experimentalists towards the realization of block states in one-dimensional iron selenide chain materials.

Metal Sulfide Ion Exchangers: High Acid Stability of Na 2 x Mg 2 y – x Sn 4– y S 8 (NMS) and Topotactic Conversion to 2D Solid Acids with Semiconducting Character

Metal sulfide ion exchange materials (MSIEs) are of interest for nuclear waste remediation applications. Here, we report the high stability of two structurally related metal sulfide ion exchange materials, Na 2x Mg 2y–x Sn 4–y S 8 (Mg-NMS) and Na 2 SnS 3 (Na-NMS), in strongly acid media, in addition to the preparation of Na 2x Ni 2y–x Sn 4–y S 8 (Ni-NMS). Their formation progress during synthesis is studied with in-situ methods, with the target phases appearing in <15 min, reaction completion in <12 h, and high yields (75–80%). Upon contact with nitric or hydrochloric acid, these materials topotactically exchange Na + for H + , proceeding in a stepwise protonation pathway for Na 5.33 Sn 2.67 S 8 . Na-NMS is stable in 2 M HNO 3 and Mg-NMS is stable in 4 M HNO 3 for up to 4 h, while both NMS materials are stable in 6 M HCl for up to 4 days. However, the treatment of Mg-NMS and Na-NMS with 2–6 M H 2 SO 4 reveals a much slower protonation process since after 4 h of contact both NMS and HMS are present in the solution. The resultant protonated materials, H 2x Mg 2y–x Sn 4–y S 8 and H 4x [(H y Na y–1 ) 1.33x Sn 4––1.33x ]S 8 , are themselves solid acids and readily react with and intercalate a variety of organic amines, where the band gap of the resultant adduct is influenced by amine choice and can be tuned within the range of 1.88(5)–2.27(5) eV. The work function energy values for all materials were extracted from photoemission yield spectroscopy in air (PYSA) measurements and range from 5.47 (2) to 5.76 (2) eV, and the relative band alignments of the materials are discussed. DFT calculations suggest that the electronic structure of Na 2 MgSn 3 S 8 and H 2 MgSn 3 S 8 makes them indirect gap semiconductors with multi-valley band edges, with carriers confined to the [MgSn 3 S 8 ] 2– layers. Light electron effective masses indicate high electron mobilities.

Multiple incommensurate magnetic states in the kagome antiferromagnet Na 2 Mn 3 Cl 8

The kagome lattice can host exotic magnetic phases arising from frustrated and competing magnetic interactions. However, relatively few insulating kagome materials exhibit incommensurate magnetic ordering. Here, we present a study of the magnetic structures and interactions of antiferromagnetic Na 2 Mn 3 Cl 8 with an undistorted Mn 2+ kagome network. Using neutron-diffraction and bulk magnetic measurements, we show that Na 2 Mn 3 Cl 8 hosts two different incommensurate magnetic states, which develop at T N1 = 1.6 K and T N2 = 0.6 K. Magnetic Rietveld refinements indicate magnetic propagation vectors of the form q=(q x , q y , $\frac{3}{2}$), and our neutron-diffraction data can be well described by cycloidal magnetic structures. By optimizing exchange parameters against magnetic diffuse-scattering data, we show that the spin Hamiltonian contains ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor and antiferromagnetic third-neighbor Heisenberg interactions, with a significant contribution from long-ranged dipolar coupling. This experimentally determined interaction model is compared with density-functional-theory simulations. Using classical Monte Carlo simulations, we show that these competing interactions explain the experimental observation of multiple incommensurate magnetic phases and may stabilize multi-q states. Here, our results expand the known range of magnetic behavior on the kagome lattice.

Unraveling the magnetic ground state in the alkali-metal lanthanide oxide Na 2 ⁢Pr⁡O 3

Here, a comprehensive set of muon spin spectroscopy and neutron scattering measurements supported by ab initio and model Hamiltonian simulations have been used to investigate the magnetic ground state of Na 2 ⁢PrO 3 . μSR reveals a Néel antiferromagnetic order below T N ~ 4.9K, with a small static magnetic moment m static ≤ 0.22 μ B /Pr collinearly aligned along the c axis. Inelastic neutron measurements reveal the full spectrum of crystal field excitations and confirm that the Pr 4+ ground-state wave function deviates significantly from the Γ 7 limit that is relevant to the Kitaev model. Single- and two-magnon excitations are observed in the ordered state below T N =4.6K and are well described by nonlinear spin wave theory from the Néel state using a magnetic Hamiltonian with Heisenberg exchange J=1 meV and symmetric anisotropic exchange Γ/J=0.1, corresponding to an XY model. Intense two magnon excitations are accounted for by g-factor anisotropy g z /g ± = 1.29. A fluctuating moment δm 2 = 0.57 ⁢(22) ⁢μ$^2_B$/Pr extracted from the energy and momentum integrated inelastic neutron signal is reduced from expectations for a local J = 1/2 moment with average g factor g avg ≈ 1.1. Together, the results demonstrate that the small moment in Na 2 ⁢PrO 3 arises from crystal field and covalency effects and the material does not exhibit significant quantum fluctuations.

Electronic structure, magnetic properties, and pairing tendencies of the copper-based honeycomb lattice Na 2 Cu 2 TeO 6

Spin-1/2 chains with alternating antiferromagnetic (AFM) and ferromagnetic (FM) couplings have attracted considerable interest due to the topological character of their spin excitations. Here, using density functional theory and density-matrix renormalization-group (DMRG) methods, we have systematically studied the dimerized chain system Na 2 Cu 2 TeO 6 with a d 9 electronic configuration. Near the Fermi level, in the nonmagnetic phase the dominant states are mainly contributed by the Cu 3d x 2 -y 2 orbitals highly hybridized with the O 2p orbitals, leading to an “effective” single-orbital low-energy model. By calculating the relevant hoping amplitudes, we explain the size and sign of the exchange interactions in Na 2 Cu 2 TeO 6 . In addition, a single-orbital Hubbard model is constructed for this dimerized chain system where the quantum fluctuations are taken into account. Both AFM and FM couplings (leading to an ↑|-|↓-|↓-↑| state) along the chain were found in our DMRG and Lanczos calculations, in agreement with density functional theory and neutron-scattering results. The hole pairing binding energy ΔE is predicted to be negative at Hubbard U~ 11eV, suggesting incipient pairing tendencies.

Dual function materials (Ru+Na 2 O/Al 2 O 3 ) for direct air capture of CO 2 and in situ catalytic methanation: The impact of realistic ambient conditions

Here a dual function material (DFM) comprised of 1% Ru, 10% Na 2 O/γ–Al 2 O 3 was studied for combined direct air capture (DAC) of CO 2 and catalytic methanation in a temperature swing operation. In the newly proposed operation, the DFM captures CO 2 (400 ppm) from air at ambient conditions. The material is then heated in H 2 to a temperature sufficient for catalytic conversion of the captured CO 2 to renewable natural gas. In this study, we demonstrate high CO 2 adsorption capacity and rates at ambient conditions (25 °C); the adsorbed CO 2 is then successfully catalytically methanated upon heating in H 2 . Adsorption was also carried out in humid conditions, more closely simulating ambient air. Adsorption and methane production were greatly improved with stable initial performance. The rate of adsorption is shown to be flowrate-dependent, which is critical for future reactor design.

Two-dimensional quantum universality in the spin-1/2 triangular-lattice quantum antiferromagnet Na 2 BaCo(PO 4 ) 2

An interplay of geometrical frustration and strong quantum fluctuations in a spin-1/2 triangular-lattice antiferromagnet (TAF) can lead to exotic quantum states. Here, we report the neutron-scattering, magnetization, specific heat, and magnetocaloric studies of the recently discovered spin-1/2 TAF Na 2 BaCo(PO 4 ) 2 , which can be described by a spin-1/2 easy axis XXZ model. The zero-field neutron diffraction experiment reveals an incommensurate antiferromagnetic ground state with a significantly reduced ordered moment of about 0.54(2) μ B /Co. Different magnetic phase diagrams with magnetic fields in the a b plane and along the easy c -axis were extracted based on the magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and elastic neutron-scattering results. In addition, two-dimensional (2D) spin dispersion in the triangular plane was observed in the high-field polarized state, and microscopic exchange parameters of the spin Hamiltonian have been determined through the linear spin wave theory. Consistently, quantum critical behaviors with the universality class of d = 2 and ν z = 1 were established in the vicinity of the saturation field, where a Bose–Einstein condensation (BEC) of diluted magnons occurs. The newly discovered quantum criticality and fractional magnetization phase in this ideal spin-1/2 TAF present exciting opportunities for exploring exotic quantum phenomena.

Quantum reactive scattering calculations for the cold and ultracold Li + LiNa → Li 2 + Na reaction

A first-principles based quantum dynamics study of the Li + LiNa(ν = 0, j = 0) → Li 2 (ν', j') + Na reaction is reported for collision energies spanning the ultracold (1 nK) to cold (1 K) regimes. A full-dimensional ab initio potential energy surface for the ground electronic state of Li 2 Na is utilized that includes an accurate treatment of the long-range interactions. The Li + LiNa reaction is barrierless and exoergic and exhibits a deep attractive potential well that supports complex formation. Thus, significant reactivity occurs even for collision temperatures approaching absolute zero. The reactive scattering calculations are based on a numerically exact time-independent quantum dynamics methodology in hyperspherical coordinates. Total and rotationally resolved rate coefficients are reported at 56 collision energies and include all contributing partial waves. Several shape resonances are observed in many of the rotationally resolved rate coefficients and a small resonance feature is also reported in the total rate coefficient near 50 mK. Furthermore, of particular interest, the angular distributions or differential cross sections are reported as a function of both the collision energy and scattering angle. Unique quantum fingerprints (bumps, channels, and ripples) are observed in the angular distributions for each product rotational state due to quantum interference and shape resonance contributions. The Li + LiNa reaction is under active experimental investigation so that these intriguing features could be verified experimentally when sufficient product state resolution becomes feasible for collision energies below 1 K.
