Heterodyne Interferometer with a Phase Modulated Source

The present invention relates to a heterodyne interferometer system with a pre-processing of the target signal to isolate and remove self-interference signals using a known phase modulation of the carrier signal's frequency. Where self- interference signals do not include a time delay inherent in the target signal that travels to the target reflector, by selecting a modulation frequency tuned to the time delay and then filtering the resultant signal the target beam can be isolated and the self-interference signal can be effectively removed The system includes a modulation unit to apply a phase modulation to the carrier signal, and a mixing unit that demodulates the target signal at the modulation frequency to isolate the target beam.

Multilayer Dielectric Transmissive Optical Phase Modulator

A multilayer dielectric device has been fabricated as a prototype of a low-loss, low-distortion, transmissive optical phase modulator that would provide as much as a full cycle of phase change for all frequency components of a transmitted optical pulse over a frequency band as wide as 6.3 THz. Arrays of devices like this one could be an alternative to the arrays of mechanically actuated phase-control optics (adaptive optics) that have heretofore been used to correct for wave-front distortions in highly precise optical systems. Potential applications for these high-speed wave-front-control arrays of devices include agile beam steering, optical communications, optical metrology, optical tracking and targeting, directional optical ranging, and interferometric astronomy. The device concept is based on the same principle as that of band-pass interference filters made of multiple dielectric layers with fractional-wavelength thicknesses, except that here there is an additional focus on obtaining the desired spectral phase profile in addition to the device s spectral transmission profile. The device includes a GaAs substrate, on which there is deposited a stack of GaAs layers alternating with AlAs layers, amounting to a total of 91 layers. The design thicknesses of the layers range from 10 nm to greater than 1 micrometer. The number of layers and the thickness of each layer were chosen in a computational optimization process in which the wavelength dependences of the indices of refraction of GaAs and AlAs were taken into account as the design was iterated to maximize the transmission and minimize the group-velocity dispersion for a wavelength band wide enough to include all significant spectral components of the pulsed optical signal to be phase modulated.

A New OEO Design Using Optical Phase Modulation and Modulation Suppression

We present the design for a phase-modulated Opto-Electronic Oscillator (OEO) that incorporates asymmetric Mach- Zehnder (AMZ) interferometers as phase demodulators together with PM modulation suppression. The new design promises to obtain in the electro-optical domain the low-noise advantages previously achieved in RF and microwave oscillators by the use of carrier suppression but which have been achieved only to a limited extent in OEO's.

Considerations of digital phase modulation for narrowband satellite mobile communication

The Inmarsat-M system for mobile satellite communication is specified as a frequency division multiple access (FDMA) system, applying Offset Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (QPSK) for transmitting 8 kbit/sec in 10 kHz user channel bandwidth. We consider Digital Phase Modulation (DPM) as an alternative modulation format for INMARSAT-M. DPM is similar to Continuous Phase Modulation (CPM) except that DPM has a finite memory in the premodular filter with a continuous varying modulation index. It is shown that DPM with 64 states in the VA obtains a lower bit error rate (BER). Results for a 5 kHz system, with the same 8 kbit/sec transmitted bitstream, is also presented.

A low-loss linear analog phase modulator for 8415 MHz transponder application

A breadboard single-section low-loss analog phase modulator with good thermal stability for a spacecraft transponder application has been analyzed, fabricated, and evaluated. A linear phase shift of 70 degrees with a linearity tolerance of plus or minus 7 percent was measured for this modulator from 8257 to 8634 MHz over the temperature range -20 C to 75 C. The measured insertion loss and the static delay variation with temperature were within 2 plus or minus 0.3 dB and 0.16 ps/C, respectively. Four sections will be cascaded to provide the X-band (8415 MHz) phase modulator. The generic modulator design can also be utilized at 7950 to 8075 MHz followed by X4 multiplication to provide modulation of a Ka-band downlink signal.

Compensating For Unbalance In Pulse-Code Phase Modulation

Algorithm proposed for use in pulse-code phase-modulation transmitter in which non-return-to-zero (NRZ) or biphase data modulated directly onto radio-frequency residual carrier signal. Devised to compensate somewhat for effect, upon distant receiver, of unbalance in stream of transmitted data. Formulated to compute combinations of modulation index, data rate, and transmitter power compensating for measured unbalance in transmitted data stream.

Spectral characteristics of digital phase-modulated signals

The power spectral density of two-level digital phase modulated signals is determined using various polar pulse shaping functions, the only restriction being that the pulses are independent and do not overlap. Rectangular pulses and pulses having finite rise and decay times are considered. It is shown that a substantial improvement in terms of minimizing spectral occupancy on a power basis over a given frequency band can be achieved by using linear and raised cosine pulse shaping functions. Further, the rate of decrease of the power spectral density is given for the asymptotic limit as f goes to infinity. The use of these and possibly other well chosen pulse shaping functions can then provide an additional aid to overall efficient spectrum utilization and management.

Waveguide PIN junction electrooptic phase modulators Theoretical analysis and design criteria

Basic design equations for waveguide PIN heterojunction electrooptic phase modulators utilizing the linear electrooptic effect are derived, and criteria for optimum operation (in terms of obtainable phase shifts) are discussed. Although the numerical examples pertain to devices fabricated of the AlGaAs system on (100) substrates, the same method can be directly applied to modulators fabricated of other materials.

An experimental investigation of the power spectrum of phase modulation induced on a satellite radio signal by the ionosphere

The power spectrum of phase modulation imposed upon satellite radio signals by the inhomogeneous F-region of the ionosphere (100 - 500 km) was studied. Tapes of the S-66 Beacon B Satellite recorded during the period 1964 - 1966 were processed to yield or record the frequency of modulation induced on the signals by ionospheric dispersion. This modulation is produced from the sweeping across the receiving station as the satellite transits of the two dimensional spatial phase pattern are produced on the ground. From this a power spectrum of structure sizes comprising the diffracting mechanism was determined using digital techniques. Fresnel oscillations were observed and analyzed along with some comments on the statistical stationarity of the shape of the power spectrum observed.
