Stress concentration measurement in a rectangular plate using an array of embedded optical fibers

Embedded single mode optical fiber waveguide has been used to determine the two-dimensional stress distribution produced by point loading on a simply supported rectangular plate. Each of the fifty individual fibers in the rectangular grid array attached to the plate yields a measurement of the stress integrated along the length of that fiber on the specimen. By using information from all the fibers, both the functional form and the amplitude of the distribution may be determined. Limits on the dynamic range and spatial resolution are indicated. Applications in the measurement of internal stress and the monitoring of physically small critical structural components are suggested.

Nonlinear dynamics and control of a vibrating rectangular plate

The von Karman equations of nonlinear elasticity are solved for the case of a vibrating rectangular plate by meams of a Fourier spectral transform method. The amplification of a particular Fourier mode by nonlinear transfer of energy is demonstrated for this conservative system. The multi-mode system is reduced to a minimal (two mode) system, retaining the qualitative features of the multi-mode system. The effect of a modal control law on the dynamics of this minimal nonlinear elastic system is examined.

Crack problems for a rectangular plate and an infinite strip

The general plane problem for an infinite strip containing multiple cracks perpendicular to its boundaries is considered. The problem is reduced to a system of singular integral equations. Two specific problems of practical interest are then studied in detail. The first problem explores the interaction effect of multiple edge cracks in a plate or beam under tension or bending. The second problem is that of a rectangular plate containing an arbitrarily oriented crack in the plane of symmetry. Particular emphasis is placed on the problem of a plate containing an edge crack and subjected to concentrated forces.

Noise Transmission Loss of a Rectangular Plate in an Infinite Baffle

An improved analytical procedure was developed that allows for the efficient calculation of the noise transmission characteristics of a finite rectangular plate. Both isotropic and symmetrically laminated composite plates are considered. The plate is modeled with classic thin-plate theory and is assumed to be simply supported on all four sides. The incident acoustic pressure is assumed to be a plane wave impinging on the plate at an arbitrary angle. The reradiated pressure is assumed to be negligible compared with the blocked pressure, and the plate vibrations are calculated by a normal-mode approach. A Green's function integral equation is used to link the plate vibrations to be transmitted far-field sound waves, and transmission loss is calculated from the ratio of incident to transmitted acoustic powers. The result is a versatile research and engineering analysis tool that predicts noise transmission loss and enables the determination of the modal behavior of the plate.

Vibrations of rectangular plates with moderately large initial deflections at elevated temperatures using finite element method

A finite-element formulation is developed for the free vibration of rectangular plates which are under the influence of moderately large stress-free initial deflections and large thermal deflections. The von Karman nonlinear strain-displacement relations are used to account for the thermal deflections. The plates are thin, isotropic, and Hookean in nature. The temperature imposed on the plate is assumed to be constant through the thickness of the plate. Uniform and sinusoidal temperature distributions are studied. The material properties of the plates are temperature-dependent due to the relatively high temperatures imposed on the plates.

Large deflection, large amplitude vibrations and random response of symmetrically laminated rectangular plates

An analytical method is presented for determining large-deflection static bending, large-amplitude free and forced vibrations, and large-amplitude random response of a clamped, symmetrically laminated, rectangular, thin plate subjected to a uniformly distributed transverse loading. Both movable and immovable inplane boundary conditions are considered. Numerical results for bending deflections and strains, frequency ratios, mean-square center deflections and mean-square maximum strains are presented showing the parametric effects of plate length-to-width ratio, orientation of layers, and intensities of applied force for both the linear and nonlinear cases. The analytical results for large-deflection random response are verified through comparison with experimental data.

View factors for perpendicular and parallel rectangular plates

Simplified expressions (in comparison to currently used expressions, such as one developed by Howell, 1982) are developed for computing the view factors for rectangular perpendicular and parallel plates in the analysis of radiant exchanges between surfaces separated by a radiatively transparent medium. It is shown that the reported expressions for rectangular perpendicular and parallel plates with varying position and size having parallel boundaries satisfy the properties of the view factors.

A finite element method for nonlinear forced vibrations of rectangular plates

The finite element method has been extended to determine the response of large amplitude forced vibrations of thin plates. A harmonic force matrix of a rectangular element under uniform harmonic excitation is developed for nonlinear forced vibration analysis. Inplane deformation and inertia are both considered in the formulation. Results obtained are compared with simple elliptic response, perturbation and other approximation solutions.

Initial postbuckling response of anisotropic laminated rectangular plates

It has been shown that anisotropic plates can have unstable postbuckling behavior resulting in potential imperfection sensitivity. The present paper quantifies the degree of instability for rectangular, simply supported asymmetrically laminated plates. The analysis is based on asymptotic Koiter-type expansion of postbuckling response. The degree of postbuckling instability is quantified in terms of the reduction in load carrying capacity in the immediate postbuckling range. For graphite-epoxy plates it is found that this measure of instability is very small unless the lamination asymmetry is very pronounced.

Nonlinear vibrations of rectangular plates.

A finite-difference method is developed to determine the large amplitude dynamic responses of thin elastic plates subjected to uniform pressure pulse-type loads. Four different sets of boundary conditions are considered. Some specific problems are solved. The results are compared with approximate solutions obtained by Yamaki (1961). The numerical method presented provides an accurate and efficient approximate solution to the problem, and should be useful as a check on other approximate methods. The grid-size and the time-step necessary for obtaining numerical stability depend on the particular problem. For many cases the method converges rapidly and a rather large grid-size and time-step is adequate.
