Design and Testing of a Variable Pressure Regulator for the Constellation Space Suit

The next generation space suit requires additional capabilities for controlling and adjusting internal pressure than previous design suits. Next generation suit pressures will range from slight pressure, for astronaut prebreath comfort, to hyperbaric pressure levels for emergency medical treatment. Carleton was awarded a contract in 2008 to design and build a proof of concept bench top demonstrator regulator having five setpoints which are selectable using input electronic signaling. Although the basic regulator architecture is very similar to the existing SOP regulator used in the current EMU, the major difference is the electrical selectivity of multiple setpoints rather than the mechanical On/Off feature found on the SOP regulator. The concept regulator employs a linear actuator stepper motor combination to provide variable compression to a custom design main regulator spring. This concept allows for a continuously adjustable outlet pressures from 8.2 psid (maximum) down to "firm" zero thus effectively allowing it to serve as a shutoff valve. This paper details the regulator design and presents test results on regulation band width, command set point accuracy; slue rate and regulation stability, particularly when the set point is being slued. Projections for a flight configuration version are also offered for performance, architectural layout and weight.

Importance of the splanchnic vascular bed in human blood pressure regulation.

Three-part experiment in which five subjects were exposed to lower body negative pressure (LBNP) at -50 mm Hg below the iliac crests. Duration of LBNP to earliest vagal symptoms was 7 to 21 min; all data are expressed as changes from control period to the last measurements before these symptoms. In part I, forearm blood flow (by Whitney gauge) fell 45% during LBNP. In part II, splanchnic blood flow (from arterial clearance hepatic extraction of indocyanine green) fell 32% and splanchnic vascular resistance rose 30%. In part III, cardiac output fell 28%, stroke volume 51%, and central blood volume 21%. Total peripheral resistance and heart rate rose 19% and 52%. Of the reduction in total vascular conductance, decreased splanchnic conductance accounted for approximately 33%; skin plus muscle conductance decreased similarly.

Methods used to investigate and resolve the Space Shuttle helium pressure regulator instability

The Space Shuttle main propulsion system (MPS) has seven 750-psia regulators used to purge the Space Shuttle main engines to prevent mixture between oxygen and hydrogen and to pneumatically actuate the propellant valves. Methods used to investigate the instability of the MPS regulators which caused a failure of the 750-psia regulator during a test in 1986 are discussed, with special attention given to the analytical tools and the facilities. As a result of this investigation, a well-understood regulator was designed, with excellent stability over a wide range of inlet pressures from 900 to 4500 psia, flow rates from 1 to 2000 scfm, very fast response, minimal overshoot and undershoot, and durable cycle life. Diagrams of the MPS helium system and of a new -0006 fail-safe improved-stability regulator are presented.

Back-Pressure Regulator for Large Gas Flows

Cost reduced, and safety enhanced. Pipe exit partially obstructed by conical throat plug. When pressure in pipe falls below (or rises above) desired back pressure, plug automatically moved in (or out). Applications of system lie in environmental testing or production facilities requiring large gas flows at low pressures.

Regulating Oxygen Pressure Safely

Pressure regulator for oxygen allows gas flow shut off on low-pressure (outlet) side rather than high-pressure (inlet) side. In modified pressure regulator initial rush of oxygen occurs in second stage rather than first stage of pressure reduction. Large volume of second stage prevents excessive heating of gas. High-pressure source remains on, and first stage reamins pressurized at all times. New regulator reduces danger of fire in aircraft and in medical oxygen supplies.

Flow and pressure regulation in the cardiovascular system

Principles and descriptive fragments which may contribute to a model of the regulating chains in the cardiovascular system are presented. Attention is given to the strain sensitivity of blood vessels, the law of the autonomy of the heart beat oscillator, the law of the encapsulation of body fluids, the law of the conservation of protein, the law of minimum 'arterial' pressure, the design of the 'mammalian' kidney, questions of homeokinetic organization, and the development of self-regulatory chains. Details concerning the development program for the heart muscle are considered along with the speed of response of the breathing rate and the significance of the pulmonary vascular pressure-flow characteristics.

Sensor Analysis, Modeling, and Test for Robust Propulsion System Autonomy

An approach is presented supporting analysis, modeling, and test validation of operational flight instrumentation (OFI) that facilitates critical functions for the Space Launch System (SLS) main propulsion system (MPS). Certain types of OFI sensors were shown to exhibit highly nonlinear and non-gaussian noise characteristics during acceptance testing, motivating the development of advanced modeling and simulation (M&S) capability to support algorithm verification and flight certification. Hardware model and algorithm simulation fidelity was informed by a risk scoring metric; redesign of high-risk algorithms using test-validated sensor models significantly improved their expected performance as evaluated using Monte Carlo acceptance sampling methods. Autonomous functions include closed-loop ullage pressure regulation, pressurant leak detection, and fault isolation for automated safing and crew caution and warning (C&W).

Manipulation of norepinephrine metabolism with yohimbine in the treatment of autonomic failure

It has been postulated that alpha 2-adrenergic receptors play a modulatory role in the regulation of blood pressure. Activation of alpha 2-receptors located in the central nervous system results in inhibition of sympathetic tone and decrease of blood pressure. This indeed may be the mechanism of action of central sympatholytic antihypertensives such as alpha-methyldopa. Presynaptic alpha 2-receptors also are found in adrenergic nerve terminals. These receptors act as a negative feedback mechanism by inhibiting the release of norepinephrine. The relevance of alpha 2-adrenergic receptors for blood pressure regulation can be explored with yohimbine, a selective antagonist of these receptors. Yohimbine increases blood pressure in resting normal volunteers. This effect is associated with an increase in both sympathetic nerve activity, reflecting an increase in central sympathetic outflow, and in norepinephrine spillover, reflecting potentiation of the release of norepinephrine from adrenergic nerve terminals. These actions, therefore, underscore the importance of alpha 2-adrenergic receptors for blood pressure regulation even under resting conditions. Patients with autonomic failure, even those with severe sympathetic deprivation, are hypersensitive to the pressor effects of yohimbine. This increased responsiveness can be explained by sensitization of adrenergic receptors, analogous to denervation supersensitivity, and by the lack of autonomic reflexes that would normally buffer any increase in blood pressure. Preliminary studies suggest that the effectiveness of yohimbine in autonomic failure can be enhanced with monoamine oxidase inhibitors. Used in combination, yohimbine increases norepinephrine release, whereas monoamine oxidase inhibitors inhibit its degradation. Therefore, yohimbine is not only a useful tool in the study of blood pressure regulation, but may offer a therapeutic option in autonomic dysfunction.

Underwater space suit pressure control regulator

A device is reported for regulating the pneumatic pressure in a ventilated space suit relative to the pressure imposed on the suit when being worn by a person underwater to simulate space environment for testing and experimentation. A box unit located on the chest area of the suit comprises connections for suit air supply and return lines and carries a regulator valve that stabilizes the air pressure differential between the inside and outside of the suit. The valve and suit pressure is controlled by the suit occupant and the valve includes a mechanism for quickly dumping the suit pressure in case of emergency. Pressure monitoring and relief devices are also included in the box unit.

Spool-Valve Pressure-Difference Regulator

Valves maintain preset pressure difference between gas flows. Two spool valves connected by shaft move back and forth in response to changes in pressure in oxygen and hydrogen chambers. Spool-valve assembly acts to restore pressures to preset difference. By eliminating diaphragms, pressure exerted directly on external end of spool valve; however, forces and therefore sensitivity of assembly are reduced.
